My Mom made these when she fried fish. She breaded her fish by dipping in egg and milk and then cornmeal. When she was done frying her fish she would take the leftover egg and milk and add cornmeal to it for a batter and fry the patties in the fish grease. She called them fish cakes. And we used to put butter and honey on them. I lost my Mom about a month ago. She was 94 when she passed and I miss her every day.
This was the "cornbread" my mamma made as I was growing up. She didn't use an egg or sugar and the batter was a little thinner. She made them with supper if she didn't make biscuits. Sometimes I'd get one straight from the skillet and put a slice of cheddar cheese on it. YUM! My family and I are Indigenous Americans. Thanks for sharing.
This was the first bread I learned to make. Grandma always sang church songs as she cooked and worked. I think it's great that you share the gospel with us
Please pray for me I'm recently widowed...the love of my life, dad to our twin boys and blessed to have had him as my pastor as well..Faith Baptist church....he was so young.i miss him so bad.praise God I'm saved by his Grace and I'll see him again.. ..
I grew up on the basic recipe (cornmeal, salt, and water only), except instead of individual cakes, it was one pan sized cake, 1" thick. Grandma would fry the cake in bacon grease (with a little bacon grease mixed in with the hot water) . I still make it this way today, using my great grandma's cast iron skillet, passed down from my grandma.
My mom would ask if I'd like her to make some Johnny cake. That is how she made it, too. That was also how her mom made it. It was a good 2" deep, like a cake would be. So it would be squares or rectangles that we'd cut in half and eat This, with generous amounts of butter on it, to have with our Supper instead of bread. It was a novelty and so good tasting. A real treat.
That's how I make them, too. I like the chewiness so mine aren't little cornbread pancakes. Now I'm hungry for them--hoecakes and pink-eyed purple hull peas for supper tonight!
My mother topped them with applesauce. Your kitchen ministry is as relevant and impressive as any I have heard in church. You have a gift for sincerity.
Amen.! Every time I hear her talk about it, I know I have unforgiveness toward persons that mocked and made fun of me way back in high school. It was awful, but more awful is that happened way back in the late 60's and I still avoid letting go of it and forgiving them for what they did and said. I should choose to forget about it as I'm 70 years old already.

Yes, the scriptures teach that there is power in the words that we speak. One of the practices that we were taught in the tradition in which I was raised was to "pray through" until the answer has been received. When I find lingering unforgiveness in my heart towards anyone, I actively bless them, praying in Jesus' name for their best according to the will of God the Father, speaking blessings over them, including the sending of the word in the gospel of Christ to them and that all their needs both spiritual and natural be met, doing whatever it seems good to the Holy Ghost for me to do to be that source blessing. Genuinely praying for their best and meeting their needs to the extent that we've been blessed to be able to do in spite of what they did to us is one of the means of grace through which the Spirit will uproot and remove the root of bitterness that leads to unforgiveness.
@@karensparks6659 The only problem with that expression is that so many people misunderstand it. It is a declaration of intent. It is meant to be used from the perspective of not being willing to allow negativity to adversely affect you. While you cannot choose whether a physical injury exists, you _can_ choose whether an emotional one does. You can choose _not_ to give power to the words of others. You can choose to forgive and move forward. _That_ is the essence of this time honored expression.
I've been watching your videos and just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy them. I don't skip the part where you talk about God because you don't sound like your preaching, you sound like you're chatting. What you talk about is absolutely right, world would be better place if more people listened.
My grandmother was Cherokee Indian and this recipe has been passed down for at least 6 generations. For dinner, we ate them with boiled cabbage and black eyed peas and a good sliced tomato topped with salt & pepper. I still cook this today! Thanks for reminding me that for us, forgiveness is an every day thing. Those deep hurts are rough to deal with, for sure. God Bless you and yours!
@tomrobards my maternal fathers side has Cherokee. My dad's side has Irish. What a temper we have once we get there but my daddy and I have always always been super slow to anger. We preferred to resolve than get angry. But nonetheless he always loved the hoe cakes.
I was looking for information on how to make Johnnie cakes. The most important thing I saw was a Christian witnessing for Christ. How refreshing to see someone witness for Christ on RUclips. The cooking became secondary. I know my sins have been forgiven, but I also ask forgiveness everyday of my life. Amen. Oh, the Johnnie cakes look great.
I grew up in NC and my people were from the NC foothills & Kings Mountain…your recipes and ministry reminds me of my Mom every time I watch you…I have lived in Texas for 30 years now and still miss these recipes and traditions! Don’t get me wrong we have lots of traditions here in Texas and many of these traditions parallel NC…but NOTHING compares to waking up and smelling hoe cakes cooking with eggs & bacon…i miss that!! Thanks for your beautiful ministry…God Bless
Being Jewish, I always find it a little weird when people inject their religion into everything. We don't go around yammering the way you all do about your idol (worshipping people is idolatry in case you didn't know.)
Here in NC, I call this fried corn bread. I add diced onions to mine. They go well with pintos and fried potatoes. I always love your words on our beloved Christ. Thank you.
Becky, you're right, we are to forgive daily, whether it's asked for it not. Secondly, my mom made this bread often. We had it with greens, with beans, and even as part of the "breakfast for dinner" meals. I appreciate you, your recipes(that often remind me of Mama) and you faith. Keep ministering!!! Charlee
@@TheHillbillyKitchen Forgiveness is NOT a warm fuzzy feeling. Forgiveness is a decision not to retaliate; not to return evil for the hurt or evil that we have recieved .As someone once said , l am commanded to love you but God didn't say l had to like you!
Appreciate your crediting Native Americans right off the top!🙂 My family always just called these "corn cakes", and even if we had them for dinner, we had maple syrup and bacon or sausage with them! Good memories! I can still smell the kitchen... Thank you!🙏
I love your surprised face at the idea that people were listening to you. Your absolute belief and the genuineness of your faith shines Becky, and that is something you cannot fake and is also something that is very special.
You are so sweet. I always love finding your comments. I still can't believe it. I still can't believe we hit 1,000 subscribers and we are rapidly closing in on 100,000 subscribers. This entire experience is hard to believe. You are in my prayers. I hope your health is continuing to improve.
I enjoy this video for two reasons , one because I love Johnny cake , and the other is because I really needed to hear your message about forgiveness today because someone has hurt me recently in a big way and I really need to forgive them, so thank you.
The act of forgiveness is not for the person you are forgiving, but for your own well being! If we don't forgive then it grows like a cancer, making us unhappy , sad and it may actually affect your health! It is one of the hardest thing for us to do! Pray for the strength to forgive, it will come!
Jesus say's if you fell like someone has done you wrong too for give them and let God have revenge. Vengeance is mine sayoth the lord! I know forgiveness is sometimes hard to do but in the long run it is the best thing to do.
Through Jesus Christ we are forgiven.. it is the greatest gift. We long for that so we should have forgiveness in our hearts. You are loved beyond measure. God bless
Thank you! I needed your words today! The lords been dealing with me on this! Thanks also for the recipe! Looks delicious!! Can you share how they became known as Johnny cakes? You’re a beautiful Godly woman!!!
Johnny Cakes, never heard of them. I will try them because we love corn bread. You do a great job in telling everyone about Jesus. If it wasn't for you Becky I would still be a non-believer. My life is so much better since I found Jesus and you led me that way. I thank you so much and I do put you in my daily prayers. God bless you, keep spreading the word, we hear you.
Peggy, you really are the reason I make videos. I can't wait to meet you! The joy in Heaven is going to be far beyond our imaginations. I truly appreciate your prayers and you are in mine. God Bless You!!!
I have had Jesus in my life from birth. My grandmother was a large influence and I hear the same wisdom from you. Thank you for that and the wonderful recipes! God bless you🙏
Thank you for being aware of the gluten free aspect, it is a constant challenge for those of us who have this issue. These look like something I would like to try.
I pray everyday for my family but, I don't think I've ever prayed very often for the Lord to help me forgive someone else for hurting me or my feelings. I think you so much for your words on this video, they brought tears to my eyes. I have some praying to do.
I forgave a family member for a terrible wrong even though he did not ask... I needed to do it for ME! and my anger. This was a reminder of why I did it and how I felt better myself. Message received!
God bless you and thank you for sharing this beautiful truth. Most people never advance this far in their walk with Christ but I pray this action of love and faith has set you free from your bondage and that you are a testament to your family member as well.
If you genuinely forgive, you do it because God tells us to. When you do it for YOU, it is not forgiveness, it is selfishness and will not please God. Forgive to be obedient to God, not to satisfy your own feelings.
Growing up in the south, we always had Johnnie cakes with greens, cabbage, any kind of peas or beans. God Bless You for sharing about one of the biggest struggles in a Christian's life. Thank you, I needed to hear that message.
My MoM, Barbara StuddardsTroup, was born in the South, Blytheville Arkansas, she carried a much heavier accent than you, however, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this video. I never knew I was eating johnnycakes my mama would make this for us as often as she could because it was truly one of our favorites. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I love your channel, and, I love your scriptures. Have a blessed life, I normally would say, "have a blessed day" However, for you, I have to say, "have a blessed life", because, I don't always comment on whatever, it is you were showing us to cook. I am truly a believer in the Trinity, I am a born-again Christian, baptized as Pentecostal, My Mom would always tell us that hate will eat you up, best to forgive and let it go so you can have a happier life.
My wife's grandmother in El Dorado, AR .....made hot water cornbread. Looks like the same recipe. First time I had it, thought I'd died and gone to heaven!!!! Grandmother could feed a whole lot of folks on the cheap side that way...and everybody was full and happy. Cheers from Texas! You are a blessing. Thanks!
You are a wonderful teacher! You explain things so simply and clearly that even a child can understand. Thank you for being brave enough to share the Lord with your followers.
I love these old recipes. I have just over 300 cookbooks and a 1/4 of them were printed before 1900. And thanks to Jesus I have a wonderful fiancé, and a KJ Bible printed in 1858, in surprisingly decent shape.
I pm sure no one will read this but God truly sent me this video. I was saved about a month and 1/2 ago after falling on substance abuse for the first time due to my ignorance and this pandemic. I have been doing so good and I thought that meant not to sin!!! And about a week ago I got in an argument with the wife and there goes my good streak :( I recently started almost giving up until today listening to your explanation the we sin daily! But it’s about trying the best you can and asking God to help you forgive. Thank you God for speaking to me thru this wonderful Lady. You have put me back in path. I thought I had to go to confession and I was so embarrassed and now I know it’s not about that at all. God bless you. New subscriber not as of today Thank you. I just realize it’s also a Sunday wow Full circle.
I woke up and as I was getting out of bed to make breakfast for my little one I was praying about new recipes that were gluten free and flour free. I opened you tube and this video popped up first! We tried them for breakfast and they were wonderful. Thank you so much and Praise the Lord!
Amen. I make mine same. Cos my grandma sleeper was 110 when she passed. And my Indian tribe (Comanche) made same way. Have a blessed evening or day 😀👍✌
Forgiveness was part of our Pastor’s message this morning in church! I’m so thankful for God’s daily forgiveness, mercy & grace. It’s been years since I’ve had Johnny Cakes...these look good!
I have to tell you that I really appreciate you sharing this recipe. I can't digest gluten, and I grew up in the south. I'm CONSTANTLY adapting old recipes, but it is so sweet to find someone just cooking with cornmeal and not dumping the wheat flour in. I adore your channel. It's like cooking with my cousins. Thank you!
Yum! I remember a recipe where I made these with corn. I gotta look into my recipes to see if I can find it again. I like to believe there's more Christians out there than people realize. God bless you and keep being bold with God's word.
Rhonda Flanders I really want to believe that there are more Christians out there than it feels like to me. As a Christian I pray multiple times daily but in my first prayer of the day I always as God to bless this country but at the same time I feel almost guilty for asking for that because there are so many terrible things going on in this country from Abortion to serial killers. It’s like how dare I ask for God to bless such evil. Anyway, I liked hearing you say that there are more Christians out there than we think.💖
That kind of people like you give me hope for humanity. I'm not American, I'm Polish. And during communist times and first decade after its Fall USA was for us a kind of lighthouse of freedom. But now... Mainstream that comes from USA brings wokism and degradation. This is why traditional Southern Heritage and Culture I personally love and lay my hopes for a better future. God Bless Y'all! Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱
I really needed this. I think I'm going to watch this video everyday. This has been a question on my mind for a few years now. As life has become exponentially worse for me, my anger and lack of forgiveness has really led me to some dark days and nights. Thank you for the reciepe for forgiveness. Oh, and the for the Johnny Cakes too. :0)

Bless you, life is hard and I become afraid. But God is good. Forgiveness is from the Lord and fill in love where your anger was. That’s what I try to do ❤️🇺🇸☮️✝️🙏🏼❤️
Thank you Becky, for sharing Jesus Christ, your faith in Him & the importance of forgiveness. Yes He is the most important person in our lives!! You are such a Blessing❣God Bless You & all that you do❣

When the disclaimer came up on the screen I felt so sad for those who skipped through the message you shared. Thank you, I am not new in my walk with the Lord, but I am taking it more seriously then ever before. It began 10 years ago and I can now remember all the blessings the Lord has blessed me with. Again, thank you and please continue speaking the word, love and blessings! Oh and love me some johnny cakes!!
I put the skip ahead for two reasons: ( 1 ) Matthew 7:6 - "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you." and Matthew 10:14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. ( 2 ) The "trigger warning" might keep me from being banned on RUclips God Bless You!
I love you keeping the older recipes around for the next generation. I also love that you share the word of God to those who are interested. Keep up the good work and God bless you.
The recipe was great, but your message was awesome! Thank you for a wonderful reminder that we should pray daily to forgive the others that we hold things against. You’re so right that it needs doing over and over! You are such a blessing and I thank God for you. ⚡️💖⚡️
Becky,, I watched this because I wanted to make Johnny Cakes, and I just listened to your wonderful sermon on Forgiveness. And, like the first video where you talk about Forgiveness... It was so good. Thank you for all you do, Becky. You have helped me through a incredibly hard time in my life. Hope 2021 brings you many blessings. Thank you again.
I became allergic to gluten about 5 years ago and it's been a real change of eating for me. I miss maple bars and cake, among other things, and it's hard to go to restaurants (because a lot of them don't guarantee their food may not have come in contact with gluten). It's nice to learn new recipes that are GF and johnny cakes is one that I really want to make. Nice video!
I can't believe im getting such a wonderful word from a cooking show lol Thank you this was a great reminder for me. Forgive lest you not be forgiven. Wonderful show from one hillbilly (Arkansas) to another I appreciate you
Becky you are correct, even if people don't ask for our forgiveness we must still forgive the ones that do us wrong..thank you for addressing that issue..God Bless You & your family💕
I have a gluten intolerance and three of my nephew's do as well. This is the perfect recipe for family gatherings so I can make pancakes for everyone, and Johnny Cakes for my nephew's and me. Thank you for telling me about your faith. It was unexpected, but something I really needed to hear this morning. Thank you for the wise words about forgiveness. So true. God bless you, your family and everyone here today. 🙏🙏
Thank you Becky for talking about forgiveness. I guess we all need reminding of this. And your right Jesus expects us to forgive weather they ask for forgiveness or not. You are a wonderful blessing not just as a Christian but also as a cook. What a great recipe. I am going to make this tonight. God Bless You Sweet girl💖
I struggle with forgiveness too! I always think I'm over it and then like you said, I get so mad about it all over again! Thank you so much, this really helps me!
Just found this post, I was sexually abused as a very little girl by a neighbour, who my mother left me with, as an adult God showed me I must forgive himand then needed to forgive my mother for leaving me in his care while she had things to and do and then it may sound strange but had to forgive my mature self for not protecting my littleself and it wasn't until I worked through each stage of forgiveness that I was able to say that I was truely set free from all the trauma of the abuse. God was so gentle with me. Thank you for your willingness to share the Gospel.
I know exactly what you are talking about. It started at 8 and ended when I was 16. For some transgressions forgiveness is a process. When a child suffers abuse, the adult they become must forgive what happened to the child. It is impossible to explain to someone who hasn't lived through it. Those don't learn to forgive, it destroys them. As hard as it is, forgiveness is the only way to survive and only possible with God's help. God Bless You, Sister!
@@TheHillbillyKitchen I believe that those who haven't received God's forgiveness do not understand how we who have received His forgiveness can forgive, as a councilor it is so hard to explain to people who don't believe. Thank you for feeding our bodies and souls. Blessings.💞🌻

She would call to come up to her house on the days she made these because she knew it was my favorite meal. Good old comfort food. Now I'm smiling with memories of her.

I'm adding you to my watch lists. Cooking lesson and Gospel at a base and honest level. I have been to Bible College, Preachers kid, and have studied under some of the top in the field. Quite honestly, I got more from your lesson on Forgiveness, and a johnny cake lesson than most church services. Well Done. I had to remove the corn from my recipe. I am gluten free, but also highly allergic to corn. I have found I can make a similar cake with quinoa flour, ( you can get it coarse ground like corn) mixed with brown rice flour, and potato starch. Not exact but close. I am going to try almond flour instead of potato starch this weekend I'll let you know if it works out. Blessings!
I really appreciated you delineating what it really means to forgive. So many people just say those words but never explain to someone exactly what forgiveness is. I believe that we are required to forgive was if they’re dead or not and whether they ask for it or not. I heard someone say along time ago that if you hold anger and resentment and unforgiveness in your heart, it’s like drinking poison hoping it will kill the other person. It only really hurts you and hold you back in your own life and your relationship with Christ. I love the fact that you took time in the segment to tell people about Jesus and I also really appreciate the fact that you check your facts. I’ve been taught by two men I respect very highly to even double check what they say. Never to take it for granted someone is telling the truth. I was 15 years old when the Jim Jones horrifying story came to light. The only people who lived through the whole thing where the people who knew the word of God and they were excommunicated before everybody went South of the border to their deaths from following a false prophet.

My granny was 1/2 Cherokee and we always had them for dinner. I think that breakfast thing is modern. I can't eat them with syrup on them 😋
@@TheHillbillyKitchen me either lol
@@tomrobards7753 thanks!! I've taught my kids as well & I'm teaching my grandkids as they grow too!
@tomrobards my maternal fathers side has Cherokee. My dad's side has Irish. What a temper we have once we get there but my daddy and I have always always been super slow to anger. We preferred to resolve than get angry. But nonetheless he always loved the hoe cakes.
Yum!🤗
Thank you for sharing the love of Jesus. We don’t hear enough about Jesus anymore and that’s very sad.

Being Jewish, I always find it a little weird when people inject their religion into everything. We don't go around yammering the way you all do about your idol (worshipping people is idolatry in case you didn't know.)
@Bethlehem Eisenhour Get back in your basement
Agreed!
Here in NC, I call this fried corn bread. I add diced onions to mine. They go well with pintos and fried potatoes. I always love your words on our beloved Christ. Thank you.
CONNIE SCHRIMPSHER-DAVIS I’m from Georgia and we also called this fried cornbread... We Never added sugar
I'm from Florida and we always called it fried cornbread, also. No sugar, but delicious.
Mmmmmm diced onions or snipped green onion tips in it
Now theres some GOOD eatin! With pintos and collards and ham hocks or pigs feet.
That's what I was going to say, add onions, no sugar and no syrup or honey afterwards.
Nothing but cornmeal & milk in mine,.& they’re delicious & crunchy a little crunchy,. Very Good!!! PTL!!! 🙏
Thanx to the native Americans for blessing us with their original recipe!
you probably stole it..
Very well received. Thank you
Becky, you're right, we are to forgive daily, whether it's asked for it not.
Secondly, my mom made this bread often. We had it with greens, with beans, and even as part of the "breakfast for dinner" meals. I appreciate you, your recipes(that often remind me of Mama) and you faith. Keep ministering!!! Charlee
I think that forgiving someone who wronged us is one of the hardest things we'll ever do on this earth. Thank you for watching, God bless you Charlee!
Thank you!🙏

Thank you for being aware of the gluten free aspect, it is a constant challenge for those of us who have this issue. These look like something I would like to try.
As I listen to you I can truthfully say, "You're my Kind of people,"
I pray everyday for my family but, I don't think I've ever prayed very often for the Lord to help me forgive someone else for hurting me or my feelings. I think you so much for your words on this video, they brought tears to my eyes. I have some praying to do.
I forgave a family member for a terrible wrong even though he did not ask... I needed to do it for ME! and my anger. This was a reminder of why I did it and how I felt better myself. Message received!
Thank you for sharing your faith.
God bless you and thank you for sharing this beautiful truth. Most people never advance this far in their walk with Christ but I pray this action of love and faith has set you free from your bondage and that you are a testament to your family member as well.
No you needed to it for both of you! You gave forgiveness and your words were no lost. Jesus has gave you praise and love! You made him very happy!!
If you genuinely forgive, you do it because God tells us to. When you do it for YOU, it is not forgiveness, it is selfishness and will not please God. Forgive to be obedient to God, not to satisfy your own feelings.
I'm so stinking glad that you don't beat up my great-grandma after church anymore. Thank you for ridding of your anger.
Thank you Becky, for your beautiful testimony of Jesus Christ. That and your Hill Billy recipes are rewarding to watch.
My wife's grandmother in El Dorado, AR .....made hot water cornbread. Looks like the same recipe. First time I had it, thought I'd died and gone to heaven!!!!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing with us Bill!

Hello Darling, your message oof forgiveness is spot on. Forgiveness is one of Christ's gifts. Bless your heart. Earl
I believe that too. Videos like this help people that are struggling with life and bring them back to God and Jesus. 🙏🙏

I put the skip ahead for two reasons:
( 1 ) Matthew 7:6 - "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you." and Matthew 10:14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
( 2 ) The "trigger warning" might keep me from being banned on RUclips
God Bless You!

Nice video!
It's so weird how we become allergic in the middle of our life. Im 42 on allergy shots now and year 5 and still not doing much. 😭
I can't believe im getting such a wonderful word from a cooking show lol Thank you this was a great reminder for me. Forgive lest you not be forgiven. Wonderful show from one hillbilly (Arkansas) to another I appreciate you

Just love watching you and your recipes May our Lord Jesus Christ use the word though you to touch just one person
