- After two years of using the Enlightened Equipment Revelation Ultralight Backpacking Quilt I only have one complaint, questionable temperature ratings. So I decided to test it along side the Big Agnes Orno UL mummy bag. Don't get me wrong. The revelation is a fantastic piece of backpacking gear. Its well made, and very versatile. I've had many comfortable nights sleep in it. But I cant stop wandering.....Am I just a COLD sleeper or are the ratings much less conservative than other quilts? If anyone has had similar experiences with this or any other backpacking sleep system please share in the comments. Thanks
So I just finished reviewing this video and I realized that some people might think that I have not been happy with my Revelation quilt. It's actually quite the opposite. It's a great quilt, well worth the investment, and EE has fantastic customer service. I'm definitely a fan just to set the record straight. Making another video with a full review now. Thanks for watching
What temp did you test?
@@libraryfiles4470 Tested the Zero degree Revelation and the Zero degree Orno Ul. Temps got down to 22 degrees.
@@TheUltralightMindset and you were still cold in a 0 degree quilt? 🤔
Great video - thanks for making it. I've been going back and forth... quilt or mummy bag... and I think, for me, the way to go is a bag that zips all the way down so it can be opened and used like a quilt in warmer weather. I know there's a bit of a weight penalty, but I like the flexibility and knowing that I don't need to "worry" about drafts messing up my sleep if I roll on to my side, etc.
Yea...I opened up my mummy bag, flipped backside up, and use it like a quilt for years. Theres definately peace of mind that comes with a mummy bag in colder weather. I am currently using the Katabatic Alsek Quilt for three season. All the hype is spot on. Its super warm and easy to eliminate drafts. At a rating of 22 degrees, I feel confident taking it into the mid teens with my puffy, tights, and down booties. Anything lower Im reaching for the mummy bag! 🤣
Great video! I believe that the fact that the EE is a quilt it may not be able to trap the hot air as efficiently as a mummy bag. No matter how high the fill is, the air will scape. 🤗🤗
Yea that can certainty be a problem if the pad attachment straps are not used correctly or if the quilt is not properly sized. I use a long, wide revelation so that I can make sure to seal out all drafts, and have room to turn in my sleep. Enlightened Equipments pad straps are easy to use and work really well in my opinion. That being said, I agree that a mummy bag of similar materials, fill, etc is warmer in certain circumstances. Thanks for pointing that out.👍
Great comparison I have the EE Revelation 20* and love it. Lowest I have had it was last year in the Pochuck Shelter and it got down to 25* and was very comfortable my only challenge now is getting the right pillow and maybe going to a wide sleep pad. I slept in the backyard last week at 35* and was super comfortable except for my pillow. Have a great week.
Yep....there's a lot of different pillows out there. I hear a lot of talk about the Nemo Filo. I know nothing about it but I hear positive things.
Motivated By Mountains JK is Hiking just did a review on the Nemo Filo. I think it was in his 5 favorite pieces.
@@davidson_oldbull_sectionhiker Worth a shot...
I didn't catch how old the EE quilt is. Just asking because they bumped the down they put in each temp rating quilt a little awhile back, that was a complaint that they were not really true to the rating before that.
Its a few years old. Definately before they increased the fill. I dont know how much of an increase. I heard 5%???
Its a great quilt, even better with the increased fill Im sure.
I have a full review video if you want to check that out. Thanks for watching....👍
Can you try the quilt with a good snuggle? Snuggles usually keep me toasty.
Of course man.
Who doesnt love a good Snuggle. Gotta get you back out on the trail soon....🤙
I was using a thermarest inflatable sleeping pad my buddy gave me but it just recently ripped open on my 3rd time using it. I figured I’d go ahead and invest in one of my own and ordered a SeatoSummit comfort plus insulated air sleeping mat with their Aeros ultra light pillow. I can’t wait to use them with my REI trailbreak 30 - which has been a great mummy sleeping bag for me.
Sounds good. I've been using the S2S Aeros UL pillow for about 3 years. Great pillow.
Did you choose the 850 fill duck down or drop the coin on the 950 fill premium goose down one?
Oh man. That was a while back but Im pretty sure its 850. I dont think they offered 950 back then.
What’s your view on The Zpack full zip sleeping bag?
Funny that you ask, because I am planning to switch to a zip style quilt for temps between 15 and 40 degrees. I am currently using the Katabatic Alsek 22 degree quilt. Fantastic quilt and plenty comfortable at the 22 degree rating. BUT, me personally, I want the ability to zip up when it's consistently below 30 or colder. So....all that said, I have heard mixed reviews with the Zpacks bag. All good, except, the rating. Its very lightweight, but Sounds like the temp rating is more of a survival rating. You may want to check out Nunatak. I am ordering either the 15 or 25 degree 3D quilt. Full zip, temp rated for comfort, superior build quality, and so far my experience emailing back and forth with questions has been nothing short of stellar.
Hope that helps. Id love to know what you think when you get that new quilt or bag....🤙
I’ve ordered the Zpack 20F full zip sleeping bag medium length wide and around 650g. The various reviews I’ve read say that the temperature rating is accurate. So you’re view is interesting. I’m in the UK so it may take a few weeks to arrive and the first test in March (Scotland). I did look at EE quilts. However I’ve used quilts on several trails and grown tired of the setup (straps) and drafts. I’ll let you know how I get on with the Zpack bag, and I’ll shortly order a Duplex too
@@ppower08081968 Sounds good. Im excited to see how the Zpacks bag holds up to its ratings. They make fantastic gear. I love my Duplex!!!!
@@ppower08081968 Also, you may want to check out Bennys review at Plugitinhikes. Good dude. LOTS of experience, including the TGO challenge, with the Zpacks bag.
The temperature ratings on the revelation bag is awful. Read the reviews on their on website to back up. I bought the -6c. The temp dropped to around +1c and I was bloody cold. For the money I paid and to have it imported to the UK, I am seriously pissed off. Until you’ve used it on the trail you don’t know how it will hold up, which it DID NOT, and then obviously you can not return it. All the hype around these bags - what a let down!!!
I hear ya....
Man, I love mine. I’ve seen this copy paste from the same guy on almost every EE video I’ve seen. Why don’t you contact EE about it instead of trashing them everywhere you can find?
@@shaggyterrell8460 and what are they going to do, send me a new one? Yeah right 😂
