Because of this channel, I was able to purchase much needed supplies for those in need. This is exactly what the ultralight mindset is all about. We took the new Dark Sky Daypack from Waymark Gear out for a little spin, five days in Colorado hiking, peak bagging, trail running, and cruising around Boulder Colorado on foot in the evenings. Not only did the pack perform perfectly, but it also helped us cancel out all the carbon emmisions from our trip to Colorado AND make a donation to on going relief efforts for flood victims in Pakistan....

KEEP YOUR GEAR DRY! Backpacking Tips
Просмотров 2 тыс.3 года назад
DRY GEAR is your last resort for staying warm and safe. A wet sleeping bag, quilt, or insulating layers can be uncomfortable at best and life threatening at worst. In my experience, even the most well made packs with the most water resistant materials can still allow water to get inside. What if you end up hiking in the rain for multiple days, or worse yet, what if you fall into the water durin...

The best way to deal with plastic is don't put it in the garments. Use only biodegradable yarns and thread. Instead of poly pro yarns use tensile made from renewable trees and it degrades. The traditional way used the last few thousand years is to use Linen. A wool -Lenin blend is called Lindsey-Woolsey. When you are out in the rain it is nice to know that linen is one of the few natural fibers that is stronger wet than dry.
Sorry to say App Co went under with no notice. The App Co use a different knitting technique called a weft weave. The garment moves with you and no need for stretch panels., because of the type of knit they developed. I have never had a problem with my hoodie stretching. I wear mine almost daily. The App Co. Huddie is well designed for outdoor use, not as a fashion garment. That is why it covers the butt. If your Huddie hangs out below you rain gear, then your rain gear is not long enough. Get a longer raincoat so the hoodie can work its magic of allowing the moister in the hoodie to exit out the bottom of the rain jacket. Something the peoples of the far North have understood for thousands of years. The system works best with the base layer being fishnet and Alpaca as the mid layer.
I wear leather gloves with a fabric layer inside and i put grease all over the leather to make them moist proof. Not for trekking, usual city walk. But some city are not as advanced as others, so it may be a small adventure sometimes! Once a pretty thick branch blocked my path to a nearby shop so i used my Leatherman Surge to cut it!
Helpful, very informative video! Thanks 👍👍
Thanks for sharing. Some great gems in here that I will apply to my loadout. For the PCT I will have some additional gear, so will probably require a bigger pack. Boots (only through the Sierra), crampons (Sierra), headlamp, power bank, bear spray, some big water carries, etc. I have to lighten my load and this video is a great place to start.
Is it itchy like wool?
Thanks for telling me what I should buy and why what next we need your permission I’ll buy what I want so shut up
What size Paka hoodie do you have?
What hipbag do you using?
How do I know if I need it? I don’t want to buy it unjustly
Hello Scott, is there anyway you could go more in-depth with what you did with the door and the carabiners I really like that
That open hood is good for beards
Thanks for addressing the micro plastics issue. In another note I wish one of these had a way to tighten the hood. Thats a big feature for me. Take care
Oops.... lost me at 20%... 50 or more for me
and........ baggie fit is what I want.... (too flabby)
That glove giving the finger is the most jersey thing I’ve ever seen lol
You’d love a bear can. Lol. Regulation here. Adds non-negotiable 1.5-2 lbs
only downside is that their entire inventory is sold out :(
I check their store twice a week on average and everything is always out of stock
Do they all attract dog hair like crazy?
I jumped when the pack fell
NYS DEC regs in most of the Adirondack park: Bear Can (1.85 to 4.5 lbs depending on size, without food) Southwest camping/desert camping: 1 gallon water per person per 24 hours out, 8lbs weight per gallon. Your tips are really helpful, but local needs and regulations really, really affect these ideas/weights. Honestly, I am trying to shave weight from a 10 pound pack (with water) to allow for the bear can or water and….ain’t gonna happen.
Useful and clearly presented.
How is the customer service?
What a brilliant knotist.
Watched your entire video, great tips, but the best tip was the last one. Luckily we have renowned outdoor retailer in my country which has a washing service. I brought my Zenbivy in yesterday, for about 30 bucks they professionally wash it. Thanks for showing us what a pain in the butt of doing a wash yourself is!
What size is the jacket please?
How is putting your feet into a cheap vapor barrier then putting them back into shoes you wore all day letting your feet air out?? Agreed, feet need to air out and need a break. But carry those plastic sign sandals at 1.7oz. Lol. But hey, if it works for you it works. 👍🏻
Watch the video again.
I have a Paka hoodie and love it! I can't wait to get my hands on their new Apu jacket.
Hello I love your videos i find them very useful. In this video what kind of head cover are you using?
Thanks! It's an Alpaca beanie from Appalachian Gear Company. Great hat!
These hoody’s run ridiculously baggy/large. Even this guy wears a small it seems now at 6’2. 175. Smh. I’m returning a M, not sure if I want to trust a small bc they only pay for returns once, and I assume there isn’t a qualified size specifications for these handmade products. Material is great tho. With “normal” and consistent sizing, tighten up the neck hole a little, and it’d be a 5 star.
The gloves are totally unnecessary, and they look absolutely ridiculous - just like the very silly skirt.
I’m also 6’2” 180lbs. I got the Appalachian gear hoodie only wore it one day, but it seems tight enough without being baggy. Hopefully they change their sizing because I hate loose clothes but right now it fits pretty well.
Im curious. What size did you buy?
@@TheUltralightMindset medium
@@jaredj631 Gotcha. I like to get sizing details whenever possible in case others ask for recommendations. Thanks!
What micron size our these micro plastics???
according to wiki Microplastics are fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 mm. so we need a filter that filters all the way down to this size at least. Plastic fabrics need to be banned out right. Once we have our filter filled with micro plastics now how do we dispose of them?
Im about 20 mins from Wharton State Forest and just now getting into backpacking. Started slowly ordering gear last week. Can't wait to get into it and get some miles in when I can! Goal is to do a thru hike of the NJ part of the Appalachian Trail before end of year. This will be a nice place to begin practicing.
Hell ya! Thats exciting. What out its addictive. Lol
If you have any questions hit me up ...Let me know how it goes.
@@TheUltralightMindset It seems addictive and will do!
The following comment i could make under just about any video about good hiking gear, but since this one is a lot about environmental awareness: as a guy from germany, its merely impossible to get good, ultralight gear for a reasonable price that isnt shipped all over the world. Europe really lacks good ultralight gear companies man :( i watch all these videos thinking about gear, but theres almost never a company based in germany or even europe producing products that seem to get close. All these giveaways are for US citizens only, all these prices are without the 40$ shipping and 100$ fees, i ordered an ultralight backpack and came out on over 500$...has anyone found a solition to this? Thanks for the great video!
Thats a great point. You're right, the transatlantic shipping cost is crazy expensive and also adds to the environmental impact. I wanted to get my Vivo Primus shoes resoled and they dont offer that service in the US yet. It would cost me more than the price of a new pair to ship them back and forth. Are you considering an Alpaca hoodie?
Thank you for the detailed comparisons. I used your link and discount code today to try out the Paka hoodie, and went for some socks too per your review of those.
Don’t like paying for paka and getting half nylon or poly.
I avoid anti stink technologies like the plague. A "proprietary" chemical likely means "so toxic we'd get sued immediately." We have NO idea what's in it, and there aren't exactly garage grown chemical companies, so we are getting it from chemical giants, most likely.
People talking about micro plastic just cracks me up.. All of you commenting about it were probably masked up 24/7 from 2020 to 2023, and you were all sucking in micro plastic from those things like good little alpacas. Now here you are, so proud that you're "environmentally concious". What a farce.
Washing with very cold water may shrink the alpaca fibers .
I'm allergic to down and alpaca, so have to stick to wools sprayed with a silicone spray on outlayer to keep warm and dry
Sucks to not be black sometimes. They dont have to worry about dying from the sun
Never heard of microplastics. Will an alpaca garment save your life if soaking wet in cold weather? Merino wool will save human life if wet. In the White Mountains of NH, there is a saying: "Cotton Kills in the the Whites." Does alpaca save life or take it if wet?
I just paid about $250 for one. I live in the UK, so had to pay a really expensive shipping fee and then import taxes on top. I really hope it is worth it!!! 🙏🏻
I use Lunar Solo 90% of the time I also use Vango F10 Helium UL 1 Lightweight Tent roughly same price as lunar.
