I own several quilts from Enlightened Equipment. I have a Zero degree Enigma and a 20,30 degree Revelation quilts. Con to the Revelation is the zipper will pinch the material and I hate the draw string in the middle of my face. Pro is you can unzip it and use it as a true quilt on warmer nights. Mostly here in Alabama I use the 30 degree and add a sleeping liner from Sea to Summit. They have different weights of liners which can add 5-15 degrees to the quilt. Cheaper option than going to a zero degree quilt. The way you add the extra blanket to your 20 degree is the ticket to keeping warm. The less clothes you sleep in will warm the air and keep you much warmer than adding layers of clothes. So less clothes, adding a liner or another blanket to your quilt equals warmer nights. Great topic to discuss! Happy Hiking!
Great points my friend! Yeah, I have layered quilt and my Get Out Gear den blanket for a while. I went to the Smokies a few weeks ago and it got down to 19 degrees…that zero was warm and toasty…I was serious about my blood thinning or whatever…I just sleep cold as years for by. I hate being cold at night…I hear ya…In Alabama…most of the time, a 30 degree bag is all you need. Appreciate your wonderful comments, as always. Crow✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING the older I get the warmer I sleep. I like my 20 degree overall for fall, winter and spring. My rule of thumb if it is 40 I sleep in a 30 degree quilt. If it is 30 I sleep in my 20 degree quilt. Hope you have a wonderful week!
My mind was blown when I learned (from you) about quilts. For years using sleeping bags camping I always thought there had to be something better! Thanks for the update! 💖
Being in the military and an avid hiker before my son was born, I never knew about lightweight sleeping bags and packs. I just recently learned about quilts too! And it's an absolute total game changer from ordinary sleeping bags or the military sleep system. Gotta be smarter as we grow older, and I agree about the length and the width. I Just need to save up, buy once, cry once. Great informative video!
Buy an enlightened Apex 50 degree synthetic to put over your 20degree and it will turn into a 0 degree. The benefit is that you would have a 20 degree quilt, 0 degree with both put together and a 50 degree for hot weather. Also, using a 50 degree synthetic over the 20 degree quilt will protect your down quilt from condensation and frost.
Just took advantage off EE's holiday sales to pick up a summer quilt to add to my collection. Recently moved to a hammock and went with the 50degree 950 fill Enigma. I love my EE quilts! I have a couple revelation quilts and found I never opened the foot box. I have found that I can get within about 5 degrees of temp rating before I start getting cold to were I need to start adding layers of clothing with my EE quilts.
Awesome comment! Yeah, I agree they are made well. I finally went with EE again because I was so pleased with the 20 degree. I am really digging the Enigma. Love that foot box. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
We too use an EE quilt. We use the 20 degree revelation - sometimes with a Sea to Summit liner if needed. The Enlightened Equipment quilts are well worth the money!
Wow you demonstrate it very well. There's button and chord so it will wrap your body warm and tight. The emerald green and gold is very nice color combination. Looks so comfortable.
Yeah, it is comfortable. I took it to the Smokies with me a few weeks ago. It got down to 19 degrees Fahrenheit…I was warm and toasty. They make great quilts. Crow✌️
I still use a sleeping bag for some of the very reasons you mentioned. I don’t zip up the bag but sleep under it like a quilt but the bag has so much extra width so I can toss and turn without as many drafts. Also, my bags have an enclosed foot box and a draft collar. I’ve considered removing the draw cord for the hood but haven’t done it. The bag is heavier than a quilt because it’s so wide without being zipped up but I worry that the quilt won’t be wide enough for all the tossing and turning I do. Having said all that, I wish I could have the courage to order a quilt but I’m afraid it would be money poorly spent (see what I did there?). 🦑
😂✌️… Yeah, good points there Squid. Great idea with the sleeping bag. I have a few bags and love them. This 0 degree is sometimes a bit much for Alabama…but, a few weeks ago in the Smokies…19 degrees…it was perfect. Thanks my friend! Great comment. Crow✌️
Hello Crow, good topic for discussion. I too “stack” my sleep gear for it gets expensive to buy for various temperatures. Thanks for sharing this with us. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors. Happy Holidays!
Great info Crow! Thats a lot of stuff to get through. We ended up going with UGQ for me and RMMommas Quilts. We went with 10 degrees. So far that has worked great for us! RMSiblings are using the Aegismax. Getting cold.... one of the wonderful things about getting older!! My feet are always cold, looking into those down booties to take care of that.
Yes…my feet are always cold too. I’m thinking about getting some of those goose down booties… I may have to get that Aegismax for the spring. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
I almost got a Hammock Gear quilt this time. They have great prices. I don’t think any of these are bad choices. I also really like the UGQ line as well. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
Nice looking quilt. That will be my next big purchase. My last was an underquilt from Hammock Gear. Currently using a sleeping bag as a quilt. That is I partially unzip it and put it over me as a quilt and I still have a footbox. The weather dictates the sleeping bag. I have several inexpensive bags depending on that the temps going to be. Would be nice to have a decent topguilt and maybe get rid of some of the extra bags.
I have heard great things about Hammock Gear. I looked at their top quilts. They have great prices. There are a lot of good options right now on the market, especially around Christmas. Lots of sales. I’m the same way when it comes to bags…just depends on the temperature. I don’t do well when I get cold…😂✌️
I went with hammock gear due to good reviews, color choice, & price (on sale & coupon). I have a 20* Outdoor vitals Aeries 5 in 1 that I used as an underquilt and pod for my hammock. With the purchase of the 10* HG underquilt, the Aeries has become my topquilt during colder weather. I'm a hot sleeper and have been comfortable in temps below the ratings for most of my quilts/bags.
Excellent video my friend. Good choice on the EE (from Winona, Minnesota). I have an EE too and it is so well made! My warmest quilt is a 15 so I've been debating a zero too.
Yeah, I love that quilt. I wouldn’t make it in that cold South Dakota weather in the winter. I saw your Coleman tent video…awesome snow fall. I would have to have that 0 degree for that…😬😂✌️
I'll be honest - I grew up in Ohio and have lived in NC 20+ years. It just does not get cold here to me.. I have a 45 degree Kammok quilt that I can use down to about freezing. I have a 20 degree bag, but like others I value movement, it's an Xtra wide bag and I end up unzipping it most of the time. I have really gotten away from it. I also have a 10 degree HG quilt that is typically one of my kids under-quilt, as they are both hammock campers. I rarely use it. So yes, there are a lot of personal preferences as well as 'where are you going to use it' questions that come into play.
So true. Yeah, it’s all about location and how you sleep. I sleep like a girl…😂…I get super cold. I was in the Smokies a few weeks ago at 19 degrees…that zero degree quilt was amazing. But, I find myself taking a down blanket more times than not. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
Nice rational! I am waiting for my EE enigma custom to arrive. I found it different to decide 10 or 20. For my Upcoming AT hike. But went with 20. I will add a liner for colder months and wear my puffy. I hope that will do it for me. Again great video and thanks for the support 👍🏻
Thanks so much! Yeah, I think a 20 degree back is something every backpacker should have. The zero degree back for me is simply when it is a trip that doesn’t fit my normal plans. I think you will be good with a liner and puffy. Best of luck on the AT. Crow✌️
Great video Brad! Glad to see you made a decision that you're comfortable with. EE has a great rep! I have my 20 deg from UGQ, amazing quilt. Kind of glad you didn't go with Zpacks. 7d materials and sky high prices. Don't think they're made to last. I just got a 30 deg from OV, which is closer to a 40 deg comfort quilt. I believe EE is also survival rated. I like UGQ's options the best, they're also very competitive on pricing.
I have heard a lot of people say they are very impressed with the UGQ. Superior quality and amazing durability. I will probably use the 20 degree bag most of the time, just needed something for the colder months…I thought about getting an OV in the 30 degree as well. Great prices on those quilts. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Yeah I'll def be doing a first look at the OV quilt in the near future. I almost got their 15 deg instead of the 20 deg UGQ but they ran out of Black Friday quilts a yr ago. This yr UGQ didn't do a Black Friday sale, I was bummed. So I went for the OV quilt b/c it was in stock. UGQ has some great rates, cheaper than EE and yes, the quality is superb. I did wait 10 wks to get it after the Black Friday sale tho, yikes! I think that's another reason why you went with EE. Take care bud!
Great info! It became apparent this fall that I too am just getting old and also crazy and I’m a cold sleeper!! I pulled the trigger on a zero degree EE Conundrum and I’m hoping to have it in time for New Year trip to do a section on the AT in North Carolina. I have the Zpacks 10 degree full zip which I LOVE, but I needed.a bit more last trip when night temp hit 25. 🥶
I basically did the same thing. There are trips that I just get cold with my 20 degree bag and wanted something a little warmer. I’m glad I got the zero degree bag. Best of luck with your trip in the AT during New Years. Sounds like a great trip. Crow✌️
Nice job on the info for a quilt. I am having the same issue right now that you have gone thorough. Built a bag, don't buy, build a bag, don't buy. LOL. I'm in the market for a new bag but I'm not sure if I should dump the money on a quilt or bag. Still deciding. Hmmm. Take care.
Ok, I found this company on Amazon called Featherstone. I had a gift card and ordered a 25 degree bag for my son. Great price and highly rated. I don’t think they have a zero though…
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING I'll check it out. Thanks for the lead. I'll send you a pic from this morning. Zero degree might be number one on the list for me. Lol you will see.
I have heard so much about quilts. I would love to get one for this year's backpacking. I sleep on the colder side. Not sure I need the 0 degrees one yet until I become more experienced but with that being said I am planning on my first snow camping trip next month.
Yeah, these quilts are awesome. I use my 20 degree quilt most of the time. This zero degree is just for the colder trips. Have fun on your first snow trip.,✌️
Backpacking quilts are almost unknown here in Norway, so really interesting to hear your talk about it. I can imagine that I would be very happy with a quilt in summer here in the north, so I will do some research in the dark of winter based on what you talked about! I am not sure if I would try it in winter before I have some experience, but I might one day. As for down; it is important to remember that if it gets wet it will not keep you warm! So it must always be packed in a watertight bag if you are out in cold rain!
Good point about the down in the wet…I should have mentioned that for people considering the difference between down and synthetic. That is crucial to know when dealing with wet weather. I would think the cold you guys get in the winter is something I haven’t even seen here in the Southeast US. I would think a bag would be more appropriate in that weather. Thanks so much for your wonderful comment. Crow✌️
Hi Crow, great video 👍 I had a similar experience with cold recently in my latest video using the Thermarest Corus 20. I had seen reviews about cold spots prior to buying but required a quilt none the less. Quilts don't appear to be in fashion too much in UK as hikers and campers still prefer the traditional sleeping bag. I plan on doing a similar video soon to share my disappointment at the Thermarest. Have a enjoyable and safe festive season 🎅atb Taff 🤠👊
Appreciate it Taff! I have noticed that most of the videos I see from the UK there are not many quilts. I guess you guys have colder temperatures that most of us here in the US. There are times I think about going back to my traditional sleeping bag in the colder weather. I have one that is wide and long. I like being able to move around in the bag. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
I went with the hammock gear burrow. The selling point was price. We will see if it was a good choice in about 2 more weeks. Great vid my friend. 👍 Backpack Burls
Thanks! Yeah, I almost bought that one as well. Ultimately, I just went with the brand that I already had. But, I like those hammock gear quilts as well. I may get one in the 30 degree later. ✌️
Yes you old. Lol. I thought I was a cold sleeper but found out it was my 3 season tent. I know your zpacks is a 3 season tent and it cold. I went to a 4 season lanshan pro and couldn't believe how much warmer it was.
Yah, EE’s time on a custom down is 8 and sometimes 10 weeks. It is my only complaint. Since I have ordered 7 quilts from them, I have wait months for delivery on everyone of them.
Yeah, I have not been impressed with their customer service. I bought their Torrid Jacket and ripped it the first trip. I’ll have a video coming out on it. But, I’m actually done with them now. I have really liked these quilts though. Crow✌️
I was torn between the EE 20° and the UGQ 20°. Ultimately, I went with the UGQ 20° Bandit 850 fill. I got the draft collar, overstuffed, dynamic tension control, drawstring foot box, and an extra pad strap. I went with the UGQ over the EE, simply because the UGQ quilts are actually comfort rated, and the EE quilts are survival rated. ~ Elise from "In Our Element" :D
That is a good decision Elise! Yeah, that is a good point with the comfort rating versus survival rating. I think the UGQ quilts are amazing. I just went with EE because it was something I already had. Plus, the wait time was really long with UGQ at the time. They may have caught up by now. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
I think people get too hung up on "comfort" or "survival" and don't ask the real questions: What is the baffle height, and percentage of overstuff? So, for your UGQ, what is the baffle height for that 20°? I know for a fact that EE's baffle height is 2.5" for a 20° quilt. EE also "overstuffs" the quilts 30%. What is UGQ's overstuff percentage? Last, what is the overall weight of the quilt?
Good question. I will have to check on the overall weight. I haven’t had a UGQ quilt. My quilts are all EE. I have the 20 degree and 0 degree. I ha he been really impressed with how they have held up over the years. Thanks for watching. Crow✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING --not that you need me to tell you this, but for the greater audience, the thing people don't realize about ratings is that a rating is determined ultimately by loft. So if UGQ has a 2.5" baffle for their 20°, and EE has the 2.5" baffle for their 20°, you know you're comparing apples to apples - provided the filler (down) has the fillpower and correct amount of material to achieve the specified loft.
My wife loves her UGQ Bandit 20-degree quilt. I'll stick with my BA Anvil Horn 15 and my new OV Summit 0 degree bag. If I catch a draft in the cold, I am TOAST 😬 Love the idea of a quilt though. Great video!
I too looked at all these cottage companies extensively and ultimately went with UGQ and never looked back. The deal breaker with Enlightened Equipment was they do not have a tension control system which prevents drafts when tossing and turning and their silly draft collar pull string is up against your neck which I found alot of negative comments. UGQ was smart to design it behind the bag. Ultimately I chose function over weight savings. My sleep is more important.
I always thought I’d hate a quilt…. Bought one anyway. Yep ….. absolutely hate it . Bought a lot of stuff along the way, stuff I don’t use anymore, but don’t regret buying any of it….. except for the quilt. Great video ! 👍👍 just happy it wasn’t you that talked me into the quilt 🤣🤣
😂😂✌️…I hear ya! Yeah, they are like hiking shoes, very personal decision. Love your comment Michael. I’m glad I wasn’t the ones who talked you into it…😂✌️
I'm looking at buying the Enlightened Equipment Enigma or Revelation. I'm concerned that the Revelation's footbox with the zipper and draw-strings might be cold but I like the versatility that it provides as opposed to the Enigma's sewn footbox. Any comments on the Revelations footbox? thanks
That is the real question. For me, I have never used the revelation’s option to unzip it. So, that is why I went with the Enigma on the second quilt I purchased from them. If you think you will use the unzip option, I would say, get the Revelation. If you want extra warmth, get the Enigma. The foot box of the Enigma is awesome for me. 😊✌️
Absolutely! They were originally designed for hammock camping. People started using them as bags, like I do, when they realized you don’t need any bulk underneath you. It gets compressed anyway. Lots of great options on the market right now. Lots of cottage venders. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
Good question. I live in the Southeast (Alabama). The temperatures get warm pretty early in the spring. It depends on how you sleep...cold/hot...I sleep very cold. I typically get cold before other people. So, for me, I usually just carry a down blanket...I did a review of the one I use, the Get Out Gear down blanket...when the temperatures get up to around 45-50 degrees at night. Below 45-50 degrees, for me, I use the 20 degree bag. If it gets down to around 25 degrees, for me (because I sleep cold), I take the zero degree bag. I hope this helps...but, It all depends on how you sleep. Crow
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING what outer fabric weight...10D or 20D...would you recommend. I thing the aging process is affecting us both the same but I’m ahead of you there😉

Nice job on the info for a quilt. I am having the same issue right now that you have gone thorough. Built a bag, don't buy, build a bag, don't buy. LOL. I'm in the market for a new bag but I'm not sure if I should dump the money on a quilt or bag. Still deciding. Hmmm. Take care.
What degrees are you looking for?
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING A zero for around here.
Awesome pictures. ✌️
Great info! Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate it! Crow✌️
Great video. Very thorough. 🏕🥾
Appreciate ya! 😊🙏
Great sharing
😊🤟🏻
Crow✌️
Fjallsport in Sweden has EE quilts!
@@logicsoundinc Thanks - I will check it out:)
Great quilt review!
Thanks so much! ✌️
Hi Crow, great video 👍
I had a similar experience with cold recently in my latest video using the Thermarest Corus 20.
Crow✌️
Great video! Very informative and detailed. Appreciate that very much!
Appreciate it! I am a gear nerd…I could talk about this stuff for days. 😂✌️
Good idea! I may purchase that inner 4 season for my Lanshan. Great comment John! ✌️
Crow✌️
Nice review, Crow.
Thanks John! I had a good time with this. I am a gear nerd at heart…😂✌️
Crow✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Sure thing! I was asking the commenter.
Appreciate it! Yeah, those Bandits from UGQ are incredible. I hear great things about those. I will check out that BA anvil as well. Crow✌️
Great video!
Thanks Jim! I love this quilt. It has been amazing for me. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
Quite an insightful video 😊 thanks for sharing the tips 🙏 love from India. Subscribed to your channel ❤️
You are so kind! Love your channel. Thanks for coming to mine. Crow✌️
Great comment. Yeah, UGQ is an amazing company and smart choice. That tension control is amazing. Good choice! Crow✌️
I wouldn't have wasted that breath amigo!
😂✌️…those sleeping pads can be a pain to blow up. 😊
Great video! Did you consider Katabatic Gear? I considered EE for my first quilt but went with KG. Just got a Flex 22.
I have been looking at the KG for years. Probably my next quilt. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
When's the last time you washed that 20.
Washing makes warmer
I haven’t washed it. I think I need to do that. I’ll try it. Crow✌️
We hammock a lot, would these quilts work as a top quilt, as well?
Absolutely! They were originally designed for hammock camping. People started using them as bags, like I do, when they realized you don’t need any bulk underneath you. It gets compressed anyway. Lots of great options on the market right now. Lots of cottage venders. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
Can you tell me up to what HIGH temperature you find your 20-Degree Revelation quilt comfortable, i.e. not too hot?
Crow
I am looking at the 30 enigma to replace my aegismax 30 quilt. Now tha tyou have had this for a while, do you like the closed footbox?
Yes! I wouldn’t go back to the Revelation. I like the closed box
Green and Gold means you're a closet Packers fan. LOL
Why not add a liner or get some long johns yo
Good idea. Yeah, I will. Crow✌️
@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING you don't grow then you buy them
Good review...but why are you trying to talk me into spending more $$$ on backpacking gear (that I've already been thinking about 😉)?
😂✌️…sorry, that is what backpacking is all about…buying gear…well…it is for me… 😬😂✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING what outer fabric weight...10D or 20D...would you recommend. I thing the aging process is affecting us both the same but I’m ahead of you there😉
I got the 10 D. I think it is durable enough for me. ✌️ I hear ya on the aging thing. It is all part of the adventure. 😂✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Thanks, I’m normally real careful with my gear. About that adventure, the returns diminish☹️
😂
Green💸 and 🪙Gold are good to have for sure. I've had same thought to prepare for winter camping. So I purchased a long and wide 0°F quilt from OV through their introductory sale during the summer. Haven't had a chance to use it yet. Still using few years old OV 20°F sleeping bag.
I like the Outdoor Vitals as well. They make some great stuff at great prices. They have an incredible marketing department. They have really got their brand out there. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
