Gosh, those animations really bring a tear to my eye. Those weren't caveman, nor primitive humans. Those were people, people like you and me. People who had their own feelings, their own thoughts and their own unique journey throughout life. It's strange how we often forget this kind of things, even when it's about other folks in the present day.

Being a human biologist, I think its crazy how the emergence of human civilizations shaped our DNA as well. To give an example, humans (like many other mammals) used to be lactose intolerant upon adulthood. However, the domestication of animals led to the regular consumption of milk roughly 20000 ago. At that time, a mutation occurred which made people lactose tolerant and this mutation was so beneficial during periods of starvation that it soon spread across populations making the majority of people with European descent lactose tolerant today (I made a video about this). Human evolution is so fascinating!
Still tho why are we so arrogant and irrational to our problems and morals ,is it really based in our DNA, or is it something to do with our consciousness or we might can change it for good

I try to contribute as much as possible to our technological world, doing my best at work, and helping other humans when possible, although its so small compared to everything else you did for me. Imagine that in 12,000 years, the internet still exists and was never wiped, so you’d go onto youtube, and see “published 12,000 years ago” like jeez. We wet our pants when we see 12 years ago.
It would take an insane amount of progress in data keeping to store 12,000 years of internet usage, as it is growing exponentially. What I'm asking myself is how will people decide what to delete and what to keep when our servers inevitably run out of space after a decades/centuries of usage? Will there be internet historians in charge of picking what is worth saving in virtual "museums" where we'd see the first youtube videos, first facebook posts, first tweets, first Pepe the frog memes? I feel like the humans of the future are gonna be doing a lot of facepalming...
It's weird how most of us living on Earth will never meet or even acknowledge each other's existence. For example, if you're reading my comment; this is probably the first and last time you'll ever see me.
This video really made me take pride in being a human. Sure we are full of imperfections. Sure a lot of us are cruel. Sure we had wars and fought each other. But the fact that this species, which is not the strongest, or the largest, or the fastest, managed to accomplish such outstanding feats in just 12,000 years is truly astonishing. We might even be able to change our fate which the dinosaurs couldn't. In the past 4 billion years, life has done stunning feats. But if I were to say which of them stands out the most, it would be the evolution of humans. Let's cherish our 12,000 years of achievement and hope that we keep doing amazing feats in the future.
Now that I think about the scale of time, and see that number 12,000 years before me, I feel like that's really not much time. We were pretty fast in becoming what we are! Compared to the rest of evolution, it's pretty much: Brain developed, some kind of sparkle made it meet a critical intelligence level, and boom! Technology and rockets. That makes the Fermi paradox even more curious. It seems that, whenever an intelligent being is developed, it takes about no time to become a space-faring civilization. Just think about it. The Roman empire is about 2,000 years ago. That feels like nothing for some reason. I mean, it's also just about 25 generations, just think about it: Your life is 1 generation! And then it's only 10,000 more years, since we became what we are and had the tools to be what we are. That's about 125 generations only, in terms of the livespan of today! (Yes, they lived way shorter, but I want to compare it to a timespan we can relate to). Even if we half the livespan, it's still only 250 generations. From the beginning of humanity to now. I'd say we are speedy fast! I didn't think that. If I had a guess how long my family tree goes backwards until the first human, I would have guessed something like: 1000? Not intellectually, because I've simply never thought about it consciously, and then of course it can't be. But by feeling alone, it "felt" like 1,000 generations at least, only now that my logics apparatus is analyzing it, I realize how SHORT that timespan really is! The world is a lot younger than I thought!
And we really live in the beginning of humanity, if we don't screw it up. In terms of a human livetime, I'd say that we as a species are just babies that learned to barely walk and talk. If we don't screw it up, there's so much potential! Let's think what we could actually do in 1000 generations! In the future. Now I understand, why most humans are not able to recognize the greater value of our life, and wars, greed and isolationism is so far-spread. Maybe we can even mentally adapt that far in the future. Step by step, like here. It just has to become a critical percentage of humans that adapt that thinking, and we will drastically do things differently. From there on, I am convinced, our development will really grow exponentially in any way, if we overcome that.
I don't know why, but for some reason I get emotional when I see Kurzgesagt animations of early human civilization. There is this beautiful simplicity in art that translates to simplicity in life that we often crave these days.

Apart from Kruzgesagt there are channels like Crash Course which you should check out also there are apps like Coursera where you can learn about variety of things. This is remarkable time for education.
In Germany everybody has to pay for the public television channel. Regardless if you're watching them or not. The German Channel of Kurzgesagt is partly financed by these as far as i know. ( "Funk netzwerk" ). So basically it isn't free. But Kurzgesagt is one of the best productions of the German public Television channels in my humble opinion.

7:08 It's possible that the ancient people wanted more certainty for their kids so that they would always have a constant supply of food even if it wasn't as diverse, because from time to time nature could yield less food or things could happen, so it's always safer for an ancient parent to know that they have farmed food to fall back on for their kids. (This is a concept from Sapiens by the way, not my idea)
Whenever I learned about things like this in history class I always thought that they were some emotionless people but this shows me that they were people just like us. This is the best education channel out there and gives me a new perspective with every new video.

@Weezy Dusting or perhaps less school is the solution, Finland has one of the best education systems in the world and they have less school time, less homework, smaller class rooms and more free time for kids to explore on their own. My personal experience with school was lots of yelling, lots of stress, lots of bad teachers who enjoyed wasting time and humiliating children and did most of my actual studying and learning on my own not in or around school but everyone seems to have a different experience it seems.
@@djayjp I find that hard to believe with micro evolution, different diet and more harsher enviromental presures, esspecialy after the industrial revolution we see a drop in human health and ability.
The fact that in a couple of decades, the way we dress, the way we act, the way we entertain ourselves could change entirely makes me think that what I'm doing now might seem strange to them in the future.

@@BearMeOut unfortunately most plastic in the oceans is not thrown on purpose by consumers but rather by wind that blows on garbage land fields and by recycling companies which sometimes simply cannot process as the pile gets bigger. Recycling is great but not enough. We need to use instead biodegradable or non polluting materials: metals, wood, plant fibers, etc. Those are more expensive and have inherently a shorter lifespan than plastic but it is precisely their main advantage. We need commercials on it to educate the people. It is a common good worth paying for, just as education or healthcare.

Every time I watch a new episode on this channel, I end up crying tears of joy for the beauty of the world and how far we have come as a species. For being able to grasp how small and intricate we are is best thing about consciousness. In my opinion.

One thing Humans never had to deal with in 2 million years was overpopulation. Our first 1 billion people was only 200 years ago in 1820. Now we are at 8 billion and add 1 billion every 12 years. Going to plants with no food ,air and solar radiation protection will not save us.

The devastating news of everyday is inconsequential in the grand scale of human time. It hurts no less to hear what happens but remember it will always pass and humanity will improve. A hundred generations ago the Roman Empire ruled most of humanity with military might and fear and now it is gone, about 10 or so generations ago slavery was still rampant and now it is gone as well. Humanity is improving, slowly but with ever increasing speed. We may not see much true change in our lifetimes but our descendants a few generations down will look back at our problems and struggles like we look at those of the ancient world. Everything will work out in time.

Hey I thought it was inspiring! We are the same humans as thousands of years ago, just as we will be IN thousands of years. That doesn't mean everyone has to be an innovator; there's tons of room and need for the simple folk to work the land, live the simple life, and weave themselves into the legend of human tradition as well! If you can be Edison, great, but not everyone can. For thousands of years, people were ok just living the simple life, enjoying family and the comforts of nature, the rustling of the wind through the leaves in the trees, the songs of the birds, and the fruits of one's own successes.

A lot of people including me have a hope that we will live to see humans evolve into a type 1 or a type 2 species but the sad truth is that we most likely won't. Instead of hoping we were born a few thousand years in the future we should enjoy the life we do have because we are lucky to be alive at all. Most people have a fear of being forgotten, we need to get over that fear. We need to know that every single one of us matters even if only to a few. Some of you reading this will go on to be multi millionaires but some may not even be recognized in society but what you need to know is that all that matters in your life is that YOU should be happy. History may remember a few but if you look at the big picture it is impossible to not be forgotten. In a few hundred years noone will know who Charlie Chaplin was or who Albert Einstein was. You need to know that no matter how much you do or contribute you will be forgotten and you need to accept that fact. This generation is lucky we are may be too early to explore the universe but we are right on time to pave the way. It isn't about us it's about the future. All you need to care about is making you, your friends and family happy. All in all phenomenal video Edit: Quite a few people commented saying that there are a lot of people who will not be forgotten but I shouldn't have been that specific with the time lol. What I meant was that eventually everyone will be forgotten. Like the big big picture like 2000-3000 years. My guess is noone alive will be remembered because the technology that they invented will either become obselete or so common that we won't even realize it was invented by someone (Most of us don't really know the guy who invented the wheel do we) and like that lights as we know it today will probably become obsolete along with the person who invented it. At best it would be like us reading about ancient mythological creatures like centaurs or sirens. Maybe they would believe we thought they were real, but probably not that they actually existed.
I don't think that'll happen. We leave too much almost-permanent info and data nowadays. They'll probably know it's a trading card game of ficticious creatures of a ficticious world. We just know so little about the past because of the lack of information preserved.
@@areb4281 back then in communities of only a few hundred at absolute maximum, newborns would be quite rare, maybe only a few per year, whereas now its constant and everywhere, so maybe people just see it as a number rather than actual people.

Maybe they saw a squirrel or some other rodent put nuts in the ground and wanted to try it themselves, some people liked it and it became a thing in the background people did besides hunting, maybe during that time meat became scarce so they turned to agriculture more, and it just.. I am currently majoring in Anthropology and studying archaeology so I love this. I love learning about out early ancestors. I love that humans can create so much but I am not a fan of the modern era because of how bad out planet is. It’s fascinating that so many people were here before us. It’s beautiful to see this!
I have a time capsule that was buried in 1920 on my college campus and it will be opened in November! Kind of scary knowing that those people were unaware of the situation they would find themselves in. Before the Great Depression and WW2, as well as the Cold War. I mean it is 100 years. I’ll come back to this comment section on November 3rd to tell you what was in it.
I think, to me at least, this is the most characteristic work from Kurzgesagt; the art work is so beautiful and it fits perfectly. There is no feeling of awkwardness in some of the scenes, everything feels fluid and with purpose.

I've been watching since I was 9 years old and I do not know how to thank them for opening my eyes to both the vast universe and the tiny quarks. From the Dawn Time to the glorious future. I am truly grateful for their work. From researchers to editors to animators and the voice of Kurzgesagt that we all love hearing every time we click on their video. I hope we can all support them to do this work well and that they will keep up and be blessed. In a nutshell, I have no words to express my gratitude for the entertaining way they have created to help me explore science and history. Me too, I'm feeling a great deal of emotion watching this and barely resist the urge to cry. These kinds of videos are a masterpiece. They feel so right and profound it just strikes a cord in our human soul.
Same! It made me think about all those humans who worked day and night and lived a tough life. The magnitude of what our species had achieved is astounding. But I was crying because out of nowhere, it hit me that all those ancient humans had done so much but they are all forgotten. We are doing so much to improve our lives but at the end, it won't matter. We'll all end up dead and that's what scares me.
I know that this is a joke comment, but I wanted to point something out. Our development of “clearer resolution” is on the opposite of an exponential graph. Basically, things have been more and more “clear” for decades, but nowadays, if you compare 1080p to 4K you don’t see much of a difference. If the future generations have 40k, although it is technically much higher, our eyes would register it as basically the same image. Sorry if this took up your time reading it, but I see this type of comment a lot and wanted to point it out ^^

Exactly my thoughts! I've been a huge fan of Kurzgesagt for years. I would learn all the cool facts and try to impress my mates with it 😜. And looking back now, I am so happy they haven't sold out and completely commercialized by doing obviously sponsored content. They are still true to their core values: Knowledge sharing.
The human race's evolution and development is fascinating, but there's one thing in particular which allowed its growth spurt to happen, which is the invention of the scientific method. I feel like this subject is left out too much, that's why I suggest that you should make a video about the history of the scientific method. Either way, love the videos and I will always look forward to the next.

@@Young_Dab in science, scientific method is a method that is used in research. it shows various steps in conducting a research, also research is not only classified as chemicals and ultra mega science, research is also what we observe and how we used that gathered knowledge to conceptualize ideas, thus, our ancestors are already doing research, for example of how they learned about fire.
It would definitely be an interesting video. I think it might surprise you just how fuzzy our definition of the scientific method is though, and how much we've accomplished through other ways of thinking. That's more the territory of philosophy than science though. The scientific method is extremely useful, but it's not the holy grail of perfect knowledge formulation that some people think it to be.

Being a human biologist, I think its crazy how the emergence of human civilizations shaped our DNA as well. To give an example, humans (like many other mammals) used to be lactose intolerant upon adulthood. However, the domestication of animals led to the regular consumption of milk roughly 20000 ago. At that time, a mutation occurred which made people lactose tolerant and this mutation was so beneficial during periods of starvation that it soon spread across populations making the majority of people with European descent lactose tolerant today (I made a video about this). Human evolution is so fascinating!

It would take an insane amount of progress in data keeping to store 12,000 years of internet usage, as it is growing exponentially. What I'm asking myself is how will people decide what to delete and what to keep when our servers inevitably run out of space after a decades/centuries of usage? This video really made me take pride in being a human. Sure we are full of imperfections. Sure a lot of us are cruel. Sure we had wars and fought each other. But the fact that this species, which is not the strongest, or the largest, or the fastest, managed to accomplish such outstanding feats in just 12,000 years is truly astonishing. We might even be able to change our fate which the dinosaurs couldn't.
In the past 4 billion years, life has done stunning feats. But if I were to say which of them stands out the most, it would be the evolution of humans.
Let's cherish our 12,000 years of achievement and hope that we keep doing amazing feats in the future.

Now that I think about the scale of time, and see that number 12,000 years before me, I feel like that's really not much time. We were pretty fast in becoming what we are! Compared to the rest of evolution, it's pretty much: Brain developed, some kind of sparkle made it meet a critical intelligence level, and boom! Technology and rockets.
That makes the Fermi paradox even more curious. It seems that, whenever an intelligent being is developed, it takes about no time to become a space-faring civilization.
Just think about it. The Roman empire is about 2,000 years ago. That feels like nothing for some reason. I mean, it's also just about 25 generations, just think about it: Your life is 1 generation! And then it's only 10,000 more years, since we became what we are and had the tools to be what we are. That's about 125 generations only, in terms of the livespan of today! (Yes, they lived way shorter, but I want to compare it to a timespan we can relate to). Even if we half the livespan, it's still only 250 generations. From the beginning of humanity to now.
I'd say we are speedy fast! I didn't think that. If I had a guess how long my family tree goes backwards until the first human, I would have guessed something like: 1000? Not intellectually, because I've simply never thought about it consciously, and then of course it can't be. But by feeling alone, it "felt" like 1,000 generations at least, only now that my logics apparatus is analyzing it, I realize how SHORT that timespan really is! The world is a lot younger than I thought!
And we really live in the beginning of humanity, if we don't screw it up. In terms of a human livetime, I'd say that we as a species are just babies that learned to barely walk and talk. If we don't screw it up, there's so much potential! Let's think what we could actually do in 1000 generations! In the future. Now I understand, why most humans are not able to recognize the greater value of our life, and wars, greed and isolationism is so far-spread. Maybe we can even mentally adapt that far in the future. Step by step, like here. It just has to become a critical percentage of humans that adapt that thinking, and we will drastically do things differently. From there on, I am convinced, our development will really grow exponentially in any way, if we overcome that.
I don't know why, but for some reason I get emotional when I see Kurzgesagt animations of early human civilization.

@Weezy Dusting or perhaps less school is the solution, Finland has one of the best education systems in the world and they have less school time, less homework, smaller class rooms and more free time for kids to explore on their own.
My personal experience with school was lots of yelling, lots of stress, lots of bad teachers who enjoyed wasting time and humiliating children and did most of my actual studying and learning on my own not in or around school but everyone seems to have a different experience it seems.

@@BearMeOut unfortunately most plastic in the oceans is not thrown on purpose by consumers but rather by wind that blows on garbage land fields and by recycling companies which sometimes simply cannot process as the pile gets bigger. Recycling is great but not enough. We need to use instead biodegradable or non polluting materials: metals, wood, plant fibers, etc. Those are more expensive and have inherently a shorter lifespan than plastic but it is precisely their main advantage. We need commercials on it to educate the people. It is a common good worth paying for, just as education or healthcare.

Every time I watch a new episode on this channel, I end up crying tears of joy for the beauty of the world and how far we have come as a species. For being able to grasp how small and intricate we are is best thing about consciousness. In my opinion.

A hundred generations ago the Roman Empire ruled most of humanity with military might and fear and now it is gone, about 10 or so generations ago slavery was still rampant and now it is gone as well. Humanity is improving, slowly but with ever increasing speed. We may not see much true change in our lifetimes but our descendants a few generations down will look back at our problems and struggles like we look at those of the ancient world. Everything will work out in time.

Hey I thought it was inspiring! We are the same humans as thousands of years ago, just as we will be IN thousands of years. That doesn't mean everyone has to be an innovator; there's tons of room and need for the simple folk to work the land, live the simple life, and weave themselves into the legend of human tradition as well! If you can be Edison, great, but not everyone can. For thousands of years, people were ok just living the simple life, enjoying family and the comforts of nature, the rustling of the wind through the leaves in the trees, the songs of the birds, and the fruits of one's own successes.

Guys we can't experience everything. Our time is limited and we cannot expect to answer all the questions about humanity in our lifetime. A lot of people including me have a hope that we will live to see humans evolve into a type 1 or a type 2 species but the sad truth is that we most likely won't. Instead of hoping we were born a few thousand years in the future we should enjoy the life we do have because we are lucky to be alive at all. Most people have a fear of being forgotten, we need to get over that fear. We need to know that every single one of us matters even if only to a few. Some of you reading this will go on to be multi millionaires but some may not even be recognized in society but what you need to know is that all that matters in your life is that YOU should be happy. History may remember a few but if you look at the big picture it is impossible to not be forgotten. In a few hundred years noone will know who Charlie Chaplin was or who Albert Einstein was. You need to know that no matter how much you do or contribute you will be forgotten and you need to accept that fact. This generation is lucky we are may be too early to explore the universe but we are right on time to pave the way. It isn't about us it's about the future. All you need to care about is making you, your friends and family happy. All in all phenomenal video
Edit: Quite a few people commented saying that there are a lot of people who will not be forgotten but I shouldn't have been that specific with the time lol. What I meant was that eventually everyone will be forgotten. Like the big big picture like 2000-3000 years. My guess is noone alive will be remembered because the technology that they invented will either become obselete or so common that we won't even realize it was invented by someone (Most of us don't really know the guy who invented the wheel do we) and like that lights as we know it today will probably become obsolete along with the person who invented it. Sadly the only people that we can expect to remember are monsters not worth remembering and those we want to forget.

I think, to me at least, this is the most characteristic work from Kurzgesagt; the art work is so beautiful and it fits perfectly. There is no feeling of awkwardness in some of the scenes, everything feels fluid and with purpose.

Incredible how everyone is crying, and so was I, this video hit something within all of us, our humanity
Same! It made me think about all those humans who worked day and night and lived a tough life. The magnitude of what our species had achieved is astounding.
But I was crying because out of nowhere, it hit me that all those ancient humans had done so much but they are all forgotten. We are doing so much to improve our lives but at the end, it won't matter. We'll all end up dead and that's what scares me.

I know that this is a joke comment, but I wanted to point something out.
Our development of “clearer resolution” is on the opposite of an exponential graph. Basically, things have been more and more “clear” for decades, but nowadays, if you compare 1080p to 4K you don’t see much of a difference.
If the future generations have 40k, although it is technically much higher, our eyes would register it as basically the same image.

The human race's evolution and development is fascinating, but there's one thing in particular which allowed its growth spurt to happen, which is the invention of the scientific method. I feel like this subject is left out too much, that's why I suggest that you should make a video about the history of the scientific method.

@@Young_Dab in science, scientific method is a method that is used in research. it shows various steps in conducting a research, also research is not only classified as chemicals and ultra mega science, research is also what we observe and how we used that gathered knowledge to conceptualize ideas, thus, our ancestors are already doing research, for example of how they learned about fire.

It would definitely be an interesting video. I think it might surprise you just how fuzzy our definition of the scientific method is though, and how much we've accomplished through other ways of thinking. That's more the territory of philosophy than science though.
The scientific method is extremely useful, but it's not the holy grail of perfect knowledge formulation that some people think it to be.
