For those interested, the 7th Printing PDF of the Players Handbook, and the 4th Printing PDF of the Monsters & Treasure book are free on the troll's website. The system has been around since the playtest in 2003, when WOTC was releasing 3.5e - it was a reaction to 3.5e as it was seen as too crunchy - crunch getting in the way of at table play. They took the 3.0 d20 SRD and re-created the best parts of 1e/2e. And the new edition drops the OGL nomenclature and has some nice updated layouts. Otherwise, it's the same game since the first printing in 2003.
Solid system, flexes well without breaking and my go to FTTRPG for the last half decade It's essentially streamlined AD&D rewritten with a modern audience in mind and based around a single game mechanic that actually reflects the relative power of a level based system and that DOESN'T break at higher level play I cannot recommend this game enough
I must be dense, because I have those original Advanced D&D books, but didn't realize the C&C art were homages to those classic covers, but you are right! Thanks for that cool trivia. I've never played C&C, but it looks cool. Maybe I'll try it out one day. My current favorite fantasy game is OSE.
Nice video. As an FYI, combat is not a siege check. Each class has a To-Hit-Bonus (+1 per level for fighter, +1 per 2 levels for wizard, etc.) similar to 3e. But STR mod does modify your to hit roll and weapon damage in melee while DEX mods your to hit roll with ranged weapon. I believe the compound bow allows STR mod to affect damage (because how far you can draw a bow w/upper body strength is a big deal). Some take more of the '5e' route and treat combat as a siege check for combat but I like the original in that case.
Oh so true, lol. All I could find on Ebay were the C&C PLAYERS guides, so i kinda thought it was an all inclusive system. Nope. No such luck, lol. Ive been lurking, looking for more! Same for OSE. The adventure anthologies arrived first, and i was so impressed, i went back and bought both boxed sets- advanced and Classic Fantasy. Waiting with baited breath for the core rulebooks to arrive. ( Shipper delay- i ordered them same day as the anthologies.) These games are fun to try, but MAN do your shelves fill up fast...
@@MitchellClements-kv3in Your first statement, which I disagree with, and your sarcastic second statement, don't seem to be in sync with each other... so we're apparently having some kinda miscommunication.
@@tigrewulph you only said that my take was terrible, which is a criticism, and did not state why you thought so, or how it was invalid. Saying something is bad, but not how it's bad isn't helpful or engaging. If you have thoughts you should share them. How do you disagree?
Very interested in C&C, and I will probably end up adding it to the collection in the near future. If ever you have time, I would be very interested in your classic goblin test for this system!
Just got the players guide, myself. LOVE the art! Its so B/X AD&D esq. Not thrilled about 3d6, but at least you can arrange them to taste, so there,'s that. The text is MUCH more like Moldvay era D&D, than high Gygaxian, lol. Which makes it easy to read- and I'm an old AD&D grognard. Just for fun, i rolled up a party of 4 characters. Easy to do!
I have the fifth printing of Monsters and Treasure. Same cover but your contents and illustrations are improved. No Mind Extractor for me and the not-beholder goes under a different name with no illustration. Still an awesome book though. I may have to get a more updated printing
Here's your hint when it comes to keeping the "griffs " straight. A Hippogriff has horse parts. Hippo means Horse. Hippocampus is the fish horse, and of course the Hippopotamus. (Which is literally an equine)
Just went whole hog buying into this game system. I really like the company (American made, Veteran Discount, No Gary Gygax hate, non-political), and the actual system has stood the test of time & seems the best compromise betw OSR which can be too simple/uninteresting, and something bloated & superhero centered like 5e. Also very easy to convert yoyr existing 5e stuff to C&C so you can still use & play with all of your existing stuff.
@@kendallcarlson5502 I'd say that being the release of the best selling RPG from arguably one of the most hated RPG devs, makes that a bit more of an exception, rather than something most publishers need to worry about. I can't imagine it's a very user friendly PDF. But I was unaware that it'd ever happened, so thanks for the info.

Looks like the free monsters book is the 3rd printing.
I just got them to check C&C for myself thanks!

Such a truly underrated system!!!
I am a fan of C&C, and it's my current fantasy game I'm playing in. It plays smooth and easy.
Great video! I'm looking forward to more from this line, can't wait to see more videos on it. Thank you.
This was a helpful review, I’ve been wanting to get the books for a little while now
I love how the covers are reminiscent of the second edition, dungeons and dragons covers. Love it.
The explorer's backpack is their equivalent of the arms and equipment guide
Hippogriff has horse; griffon has lion.
Running an active C&C game set in the Haunted Highlands on FGU - solid system - easy to convert NPC's from 2E as well.
Nice video.

Make more room on your shelf, there are so many books that you don't NEED, but you want because you like the flavor and feel!
This is a terrible take.

Although it was last year that I played
I am biding my time to get this. I think 7 years now. I want to find the physical books at a convention. Anyone know a d&d convention in Europe?

Do they really think pirates are stitching PDFs together from screen-grabs off of RUclips videos?! That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
It does happen. That’s how the first pdf of 2024 DnD came about.
