Will Diggs I have a 1997 Marquis with 252,000 miles and I paid $600 for it. Been driving it since 2017 and it’s still going strong. The AC still blows ice cold and the heater still works. Oh and the electric seats and windows still work. Radio doesn’t work.
I drive it super easy and take good care
      Of it.

Yeah I have a silver 2003 MGM Ultimate. Converted the rear air suspension to coil springs. The air bags were already leaking when I got it so I just solved that problem for life. Transmission has a broken accumulator spring, making the 1-2 shift jerk about 10% of the time. Converted the Y pipe single exit exhaust to true dual, no linkage pipe. Just two divorced 3" pipes right off the rear cats with side exits before the axle. Added Marauder headlights and corners, swapped in Crown Vic tails, tinted the tails in the S55 pattern, tinted the giant red rear fascia so it appears black. It's the daily and I abuse the whole hell out of it, so I'm not putting any more money into customization :)

Grand Marquis..The last of the good body on frame cars. For a V8 the fuel mileage really isn't that bad. The 2 valve 4.6 V8 is probably one of the most reliable engines made in the last 20yrs. I am giving my son my very good condition 2004 Ford F150 STX with the 4.6 2 valve as well as having a locking rear differential. Its going to be his graduation present this year. I am currently looking at used Grand Marquis for a new to me vehicle. (yes I would love a newer F-150,,but so expensive) What can you honestly buy out there today that comes close to the overall build quality of one of these cars in the up to 4K range..some 5 plus with extremely low miles. I love the 4.6 2 valve engine. In my truck it always had no issues doing a 1/2 ton trucks duties. Pulls my fiberglass bass boat down interstates without breaking a sweat with a mildly tuned lower hp V8. I would like the locking rear diff added to whatever G Marquis I purchase...Plenty of parts out there to make it happen.

Things have changed. Back in 2016, I bought a 69,000 mile 2006 Grand Marquis LS in excellent condition for $4500. Unfortunately it was Performance White, and is now half white and half gray. I still have it, and it still runs like new with 238,000 miles. I plan to wear it out. But I know it won't last forever, so just a couple of weeks ago I bought a one owner 2007 Grand Marquis LS with 36,000 actual miles on it. Even though I was a mechanic for 41 years, I had it inspected by another mechanic I've known for a long time, who has a hydraulic lift. Everything checked out. I paid $9000 for it. These cars are not cheap anymore. And really nice ones are few and far between. I consider $9000 for a like new super low mileage Grand Marquis that has been in AZ it's entire life a much better deal than the new $35,000 2022 Hyundai Accent my ex wife bought.

As a Crown Vic LX owner I can say that the P71/B is more fun and I'd rather have one of those if it's one that was an admin car and not a patrol car. However, the LX/MGM will get better MPG, is more comfortable and will most likely be more reliable due to less abuse. It's all in what you're looking for. Sadly due to salt (it's not bad but do I necessairly want to deal with all the incoming salt issues in a couple years? no) I'll be looking for a newer Crown Vic and the only option is pretty much going to be a 2010+ CVPI.

I have an '03 I bought used in 2009, it's been fantastic. Good power, super comfortable and it gets me where I need to go. Although the PO didn't keep up with the maintenance. The suspensions wear out on all of the panther cars because they're so heavy. Look out for ball joints and check the rear axel seals/bearings. The intake manifold cracked on mine even though it had the updated part. The LCM went out but was replaced for free since it's a safety recall. I also had to replace the ABS computer, fuel pump and have the AC system rebuilt. At this point the car has been paid off for years and it still runs great. I'll be sad when it finally comes time to get rid of it. I honestly don't know what I would replace it with.

Then I had a thought.....look for a Mercury Grand Marquis.....typically very well taken care of, hardly abused, low idle hours, interior is usually in great shape....you get all the benefits of a P71 without all the disadvantages. My car was a one owner 2006, 62K, driven by an elderly lady, interior was immaculate, paint like brand new, runs and drives like a brand new car.....on average I drive over 100 miles a day and nothing drives or runs better man its great I will never sell it!!!

I love that you brought up the grandma example. My mother, 86 years old, has just offered me her 2008 mercury grand marquis. I call it the Palm Beach, cause that's what it says on her barely worn seats. Everything about this car is gold. I'm making a list of little additions and subtractions I want for it. I want to free it of emissions restrictions, without going overboard, I want to free up its lungs and do something with the exhaust, maximize its natural born get up and go. So far all I've found is mods that look cool if this were pimp my ride. I haven't seen a rim/tire yet that I like and I haven't heard from anyone who's lowered it a notch what if any restrictions result from doing so. I think I would rather not lower it if I'm going to run into problems with the suspension or scraping the carriage. I would rather hit speed bumps without needing to slow to a complete stop, I seem one that took out the bench seat for a couple buckets, that looked real cool. 4 of those instead of the two bench seats could be cool, but I can think of good use for the bench as well, yes sir

I buy and flip cars a lot and with my experience as well as with friends, family, neighbors etc that are "grandma/grandpa" types is that they are the ones that typically over maintain their vehicles and the types of owners I seek out when buying used cars as they usually buy new, with cash, then own them for 10 years plus then sell them with a folder full of maintenance records. They usually go to dealers for maintenance and not quickly lube's......That's what I have experienced and witnessed instead of just assuming they are cheap and lazy and looking for convenience compared to a typical middle aged person who is rushing around and leasing cars every 3 or so years running kids to and from places sitting in traffic and burning through brakes and tires and finding time to change their oil when it's already 6 months overdue..

    Love your channel.
Preach it about the Gran Marquis.
    I own a 97 that I bought for 1000 back in 15.
When I bought it had 215k now has 255k.
Right after I bought it took a 500 mile one edge trip in it. Only thing I did was change the oil to 5W/20 , so it would flush the engine somewhat. Driving 70 + avg 27 mpg. Currently run 5W30 or 10W30 and still get about 23 mpg to 25 mpg.
Try that in a 4 banger and all cramped up.
It is not the lx with the leather and all but I love it.
No the downside. It did have a couple of minor repairs, brake lines and shift linkage.
I will probably have to get rid of it. Why?
Rust. The previous owner never washed it.
The front underside is rusted bad. To the point I was advised the front frame would need to be cut out and a new (junkyard) clean frame welded in. Remember Ford with the Crown Victoria had a recall on some of them about rust.
But I am already looking around for one.

Something that I never hear or see talked about with Panthers is worn suspension. Suspension parts failures at around 100k of civilian use in Grand Marquis are very common. 2/2 of my MGMs (2003 and 2008) were purchased at 120k and 97k respectively, both with worn suspension. The 2003 had leaking rear air shocks, 4 severely worn ball joints, A-arms, and struts. It costed about $2000 to replace all of this, but my local mechanic had the welder do some exhaust for free, which was great. The 2008 I just bought needed struts really bad. That's $190 per Motorcraft strut, plus 2 hours labor, about $600. The front end still doesn't feel just right on the 2008, but everything else was inspected by the trusted mechanic. Watch how people drive over speed bumps at 25mph and you'll soon see why this is the case.
My BEFORE you buy a Mercury Grand Marquis advice is this: ram it over speed bumps in the test drive (go to a school or shopping center) and make sure the front end doesn't bottom out or feel loose. Park the car and put the windows down, turn the A/C or heat off, radio off, and turn the wheel all the way left and all the way right - listen for pops, which would indicate worn ball joints. Sometimes Grand Marquis' get sold out of an estate sale and have sat in a garage or driveway for a long time. This can cause the suspension to settle in some unnatural ways, making it seem like there's more wear on the suspension. Putting the car on a lift for 30 minutes can allow grease to move around in the ball joints and make them work correctly. Sagging coil springs can also sometimes be fixed this way, just stretch them out by putting it on the lift. If any of these problems arise, go ahead and deduct $1500 from the fair purchase price or walk away.
There's also the steering columns at least on 2008-2011 model MGMs and CVs. They get worn out and introduce a lot of play in the steering wheel. This can result in an accident as you basically lose control if you hit a bump. A bumpy gravel driveway takes away about 40% of the steering control you have, as you'll need to turn the wheel very far to get steering response in these conditions. I experienced this in a 2009 CV P70 LWB fleet package. The only solution was to replace the whole column with one from the junkyard, about $250 for the part, 1-2 hours labor. I traded that car in, as it also had a cracked intake, busted/rusted shocks, leaking trans, and an oil leak. Good thing I only bought it for $2k with 98k, and this was when 2009 wasn't old yet.

    • @geraldscott4302
      @geraldscott4302 11 месяцев назад

I have 238,000 miles on my 2006 Grand Marquis LS, and the only suspension parts I've replaced were the rear air bags and shocks. I actually replaced the air bags with coil springs. Under $250 in NEW parts, I did the work myself, took less than 2 hours. Front suspension is all original and in good condition. Even if you have to replace all 4 ball joints, both shocks and springs, the complete upper control arms, and the sway bar links and bushings, you are looking at $500-$600 in aftermarket parts, and any mechanically inclined person can do the job themselves. My steering is fine, the rack and pinion steering in 2003 and up models can last past 400,000 miles. It has zero oil leaks. I did install an aftermarket transmission pan with a drain plug, and replace the transmission fluid every 9,000 miles, and the filter every 27,000 miles. I change the engine oil and filter every 3000 miles. Running these cars with dirty oil and trans fluid will damage the seals.

    • @wolfalaska7638
      @wolfalaska7638 6 месяцев назад

Gerald, I'm in favor of frequent maintenance. May I ask how you came to 9,000 miles for tyranny fluid change & 27,000 for filters? Was fluid getting burnt smell or finding metal in filters? Ford says tranny is a lifetime unit with no service needed. No one knows what that means.
Do you always change oil every 3,000 miles or every 5 months?
Our MGM LS is 20 years old at 44,000. CARFAX shows numerous Ford dealer servicing for this car.
Some mechanics have questioned servicing more than factory engineers have specified. Not me. But I want the extra effort to be worthwhile. Thank you for the good info in yout comment!

I've had both. I liked both. I think my next Panther will be a Town Car & I'll put a P71 suspension and dual exhaust on it. You really can't go wrong on any of these cars if you know how to buy.

I'm on my 6th Grand Marquis, a 2003 Grand Marquis CTE Custom in the last 25 years. Bought with 44,000 miles and now have 197,000 on it. I keep them until 225,000-250,000 miles on them. Except for everyone replacing the intake manifold once or twice in their lifetime, these cars are indestructible. Yes, I will be buying another in a year or 2. With many back surgeries with steel rods in my back and down my left leg, these cars are so comfortable. Always bought them from the elderly as they only drive to church and grocery store once a week. Hell, they've never been over 55 mph on the highway. Buy from the elderly! Nothing like a rear wheel drive V8 powered car. Next one will be a 2010. Last full production year. Also the insurance industry has Grand Marquis a 5 out of 5 star safety rating. Consumer Reports has it 5 out of 5 stars for trouble free reliability and maintenance.

Got a Beige 2004 Crown Victoria LX just like that grand marquis complete with cloth bench seats & wood trim interior & chrome finish exterior. Used to be a rental car then was purchased by a farmer for his wife. Beautiful car and still putting out at 25000km under its belt. (Only mods Added cold air intake & throttle body spacer to maximize fuel efficiency, bottle neck muffler chrome tipped & a trailer hitch lol)

I had a 1994 Grand Marquis and that car was an absolute beast. I filled that car up times a week on up graded gas tand and interceptor package. But it was totally worth it

I have a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis CTE "Custom Tasca Edition" with 200,000 miles on it. Bought it with 48,000 miles and it's the 6th Grand Marquis I have bought over the last 25 years. The most reliable V8 rear wheel drive car there is. Very comfortable ride with all the power accessories. Everyone I bought was from an elderly couple who used it once a week for grocery shopping and to church. Never been over 55 mph and never beat on. Always well taken care of.

I've got a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with just over 75,000 miles on it. I bought it in 2006 with 25,600 miles on it. I just replaced the rack and pinion steering, I also have the two passenger windows not working and no A/C, but she has a lot of power and drives nice. I live in Florida and have only gone without the A/C for about five and a half years now. Eventually I'll get around to fixing those things, I do have a fan for the summer time.

Yeah I sure like my 04 marquis. Bought it from an old guy. Looks exactly like the silver birch one in the video except I have digital dash. Got it for $500. Had to replace rear shocks, battery, air compressor and forward clutch pack and misc trans seals. Not a very good deal in the end but I learnt a lot about these cars and the 4r70w. I robbed the compressor and battery from my 03 marauder project so saved some cash there at least.

I've had my Grand Marquis well over 120. so I don't know if that top speed is right. I have not changed any governor or ECM. its a 1999. Does that mean it's 120 from a governor? Or from the ECM? or is that all the engine can push out?

Did the MGM get the same 31 spline rear as the P71s in the later years? Looking at a lower mileage one on Monday hopefully after giving up on finding an unamused P71.
