Cavitation is defined as the process of formation of the vapor phase of a liquid when it is subjected to re- duced pressures at constant ambient temperature. Thus, it is the process of boiling in a liquid as a result of pressure reduction rather than heat addition.
Cavitation is a phenomenon in which the static pressure of the liquid reduces to below the liquid's vapour pressure, leading to the formation of small vapor-filled cavities in the liquid. ... The process in which a void or bubble in a liquid rapidly collapses, producing a shock wave, is called inertial cavitation.
How does cavitation occur?
Cavitation occurs when the liquid in a pump turns to a vapor at low pressure. It occurs because there is not enough pressure at the suction end of the pump, or insufficient Net Positive Suction Head available (NPSHa). ... As the liquid passes from the suction side of the impeller to the delivery side, the bubbles implode
What is cavitation and its effects?
Cavitation is an important term for rotating equipment engineers. The generation of vapour bubbles or cavities in a fluid flow due to low pressure and its sudden collapse causing damages in the related parts like impeller, pump housing, etc are termed as Cavitation.
What is Vapour pressure and cavitation?
Vapour Pressure increases with increasing temperature. ... Cavitation is defined as the phenomenon of formation of vapor bubbles of a flowing liquid in a region where the pressure of the liquid falls below its vapour pressure
