This song changed my life. I bought the album Age of Consent too. I grew up as a smalltown boy thinking I was the only gay person in the entire town. I was so lonely. Then I heard this song and suddenly it gave me hope that soon I would leave that god forsaken place and be myself; meet other gay people. Then one day Jimmy Somerville sat next to me at a gay run cafe in central London called First Out and I just had to express my gratitude to him. He had been my life saver. He was well chuffed . He was a very well mannered gentleman. I have nothing but heart felt love for him
The album is an absolute landmark for the changes which took off in the UK for gay culture at a devastating time of AIDS. The whole album is a 'must listen' but not many tracks are played on radio because of their heartbreaking, searing content. Do check all of it out, but when you are in 'a good place'.
Growing up in the UK in the 80's, full of hatred and bigotry, made worse by the AIDS epidemic, then a death sentence, knowing you were different, but being too terrified to tell anyone and thinking no one was like you and you must hide away in shame. And then hearing this song. And the shrieking cries at the start of it, expressing all that emotional pain. And knowing someone else might be feeling the same. Undescribable, the emotions this song brings flooding back within the first few bars. Unimaginable now, in today's society, what this song meant to some people then.
When he opens with ..cryyyyyyy.ayyy it feels like it comes from his soul...after years of bullying and rejection from those who should have had love from
This was a groundbreaking Video. It was the 1980's and as you know there was no Gay Pride then the way it is now. It was the first Video I saw with a Gay Theme, and I'm sure it healed alot of Young Men & Women who knew they were different.
Growing up gay in the 80s was quite terrifying for so many of us. When this song came out it was like a message from the heavens. From Gay Jesus, lol. I wept and danced at the same time in my home spinning this.
Well, it was also the first time many father had to openly deal with the fact that their son would mark the end of his linage. There is always two sides to each story. Your luck and happiness also marks the end of your family's history. For a lot of fathers that isn't easy to deal with. Especially when it's the only son. Not trying to attack you by any means here, just trying to give you another perspective.
Thank you for reviewing these videos. My oldest son came out to me 4 years ago, just after high school. For people who ask,why it’s important, I can tell you this…the next morning, my 14 year old autistic son texted me during class to say he was stressed. I knew something was up, because he didn’t usually text me from school, especially to talk about something affecting him on an emotional level. He asked me if I would be upset if he said he wasn’t straight either. I said of course not. His reply was, “Thank God. That’s a load off my toad.” To this day, I have no clue wtf that means, but I love it, and use it frequently. 😂😂😂. So, that’s why it matters. His older brother having the courage to be open and honest potentially saved him years of stress and anxiety.
I’m always surprised more reactors to this video don’t cry during it. I’m a cis hetero man, and when I was about 7 years old this was a hit and seeing the video then, back in 1984, I remember being so incredibly moved by it. It left an absolutely indelible impression on me. And of course the track itself is awesome too.
When pop music raises the flag and make such a statement tha its hard to look away. This touched and provoked me as a kid and shaped my outlook. Thanks for music like this more people open their eyes. This tune deserves all the credit in the world. They were groundbreaking.
So happy to see this!! I somehow missed this one in the 80's, only heard the song for the first time a couple of years ago and my mouth dropped open at the amazingness.
The singer is named Jimmy Sommerville. He also had a solo career and was also part of a band called The Communards. Both projects had really nice songs.
The week that this video was premiered on MTV, I saw it fro the first time in a gay S&M (Stand & Model) bar in West Hollywood called "The Motherlode". They had recently installed TV's to play music video's on since that was the new rage with the rise of MTV. When they played this video for the first time on a Friday night, the majority of the people in the bar had not seen the video yet (me included). We all stood there watching it with our mouths hanging agape. It was very controversial for its time and we couldn't believe what we were watching. There were many people who could relate to the message of the video though and many in the crowd had tears in their eyes by the end of the video. It still to this day has a very powerful message. BTW, the diver/swimmer in the video that the lead singer Jimmy Sommerville is watching was his real life lover at the time. I cannot remember his first name but his last name is Bronski as in "Bronski Beat".
Love this song and video. Such an iconic intro and ground breaking at the time, always makes me emotional listening to Jimmy’s haunting vocals. Love you! 🌈
Jimmy Somerville has an amazing voice, as he has gotten older it has become slightly deeper and gravely, which I love . this song is one of my top 20 1980s fav songs, thank you....
He has such a great soul. He had a tough time when he came out. They people want to know him now. We're all very proud of him. Hes still touring. Well he was before this pandemic
@@nicolaadens2443 luckily each generation is having a comparatively easier time of it, even though it’s still difficult and we are far from equality. It was so important to have any mainstream representation and his music along with FGTH and Pet Shop Boys and a few others were lifesavers. Now we get to have Troye Sivan kiss men in his music videos - would have been unthinkable to me in the 80s. Anyway, love his voice and his artistry, and in interviews he always seemed humble, gracious and kind - an all around good soul - happy to hear that he is as imagined. Hoping he’ll tour Australia when the world reopens. 💕🏳️🌈
Bronski Beat, The Communard or Jimmy 'solo': so many great songs! Back in the 80s I always liked what I heard from BB&TC on the radio. Early 90s I bought a "Best of" album (record). Around '98 I played it so often that I didn't want to deal with switching/turning (?) sides anymore and bought the CD version. And on that CD was an additional track that I loved instantly. And it made me realize that there were so many more great songs to discover . And I did.
I was 7 when this came out and remember the video but having no clue of the meaning. The bands debut album was called 'The Age of Consent' which at the time was not equal in the UK (18 for gay males but 16 for heterosexuals).
I looked Jimmy Sommerville in the eye from less than 50cm away in a gay nightclub in Paris in 1985, and he struck me as a boy, shy and wary! I danced a lot to his music!❤
I saw Bronski Beat at the Caley Palais in Edinburgh on my 18th birthday in 1984. I’m a lifelong fan. See people have recommended Sylvester, ‘You make me feel (Mighty Real)’ - I can’t believe you haven’t heard this before, but it has been my fave song since I was 12 (1978). Just love a cowbell and a falsetto. Also look at Billy Mackenzie’s cover of ‘Free’, another great Scottish act.
There is a clip of a busker in Jimmy Somerville's home town doing one of his songs and then Jimmy turns up with his dog and joins in its lovely 🙂. Jimmy is Scottish.

For those who don't know' this song is about a gay man growing up in England in the 1980s. A time of un-acceptance and extreme Prejudice towards Homosexuals Because of The aids epidemic . And to be happy, He would have to leave his Family and everything he knows and run away to find love 💙 ❤️

You need to try the Communards "Don't leave me this way" or "Never can say goodbye" with Jimmy on vocals. Try to stop dancing with them!
Those 2 are faves of mine.
Or his cover of I feel love 🏳️🌈

Tell him he put a chunky little gay Albertan farm kid on the right track in 1984 and for that I’ll be forever grateful.
