Is the LEGO Franchise Falling Apart? - Charting with Dan! - Развлечения
Did you see The LEGO Movie 2 this weekend?
POOL RULES:
One: Speak up and join the conversation- we encourage respectful debate.
Two: Respect your community- racism, misogyny, homophobia and hate speech aren’t tolerated.
Three: “Be nice.” - Dalton from Roadhouse
The Bruce Willis cameo was priceless.
Or one could say " Be excellent to each other " - bill and ted
Be prepared for "I don't like that Chris Pratt has a faith and......and.....talks about it! How could he??" comments.
It unfortunately doesn’t deserve as much Box Office as the first movie, because it’s simply not as good.
Has similar humour but also a predictable plot, lacking originality compared to the first film.
Not sure why Lord and Miller didn't direct it if its their screenplay. If they were at the helm it would have been great instead of just passable
i dont know if the co host is changing because of scheduling or whatever but one episode with lon, one with roth, one with billy and one with joe is perfect for me. keeps the conversation fresh between their piers and is super fun to watch. either way keep it up mister murrel, you are a treasure!

Let's not get Piers Morgan involved in this.
This is my favorite SJ show. Really appreciate the global perspective. Lots of respect for putting out the show while studio is in transition 😘
I'm glad the change in set didn't cancel this week's Charting. This is one of my favorite RUclips features.
Bless you for using the Zendaya is Meechee poster for Smallfoot.
Hey Dan. Big fan of Charting and SJU in general. The girlfriend and I went to see Extreme Job today because it was mentioned on previous Charting shows. We greatly enjoyed the film - great comedy/action movie and would highly recommend it to anyone!
We might want to remember this time last year was the high point of the moviepass frenzy. Maybe that explains part of the sharp drop in box office numbers this year?
Dan, don't forget the weather also may have kept people home this weekend
yea, I was really surprised to not hear him mention this.
That's got to be the main factor seeing as how it's still the top earner at the box office for this weekend
yes! exactly polar vortex. thank you for mentioning it.
Thanks for Charting. I love it. Following the business of films is one of my favorite things in film. There's nothing quite like this on the internet and this show is exactly what I'm looking for.
It's perfect.
movie math with grace beyond the trailer
I just saw The Wandering Earth last night in Times Square. The audience was 90% Chinese of course. It was amazing, but I just don’t think general American audiences would be into it. They don’t want to read and dubbing sucks.
It was a really well done disaster flick. Thank god I live in an area with a ton of Asians so we get these movies.
Thank you also for letting me know about extreme job. I could not believe it was in my local Bayside theater. I loved it too. Thank you Dan!!!
Agree with you on both counts (also at the AMC 25, our NY mecca for foreign films): saw "Wandering Earth" last week on new years (in IMAX 3D) + watched "Extreme Job" last night. Really liked 'Wandering Earth" - had Hollywood level special effects (really only cost $50MM to make?!), gave all of the characters their "moment", has the same tropes of most disaster films but from more of a "doing it together" aspect + all of the carnage were at rather grand scale (and there's a lot less flag waving compared to something to like Operation Red Sea or most American action movies to be fair). "Extreme Job" is goofy fun, has an interesting large brawl at the end, and makes you crave Korean fried chicken afterwards :)
Since the weather has been so bad in a lot of parts in the US I’d imagine that’s stopped people from going to the movies
For real. Not going to risk my life (or give up my shoveled-out parking spot) for a movie that’s going to be on streaming in a few months.
I really hope Alita does well. Not necessarily for that movie itself but for anime adaptations in general.
There is so much rich source material from that genre that could become great western movies and even franchises.
I hope so too.
Yah. I'm going to go see it as a big fan of the source material. I know I'll at least enjoy it visually since at least the people responsible for that aspect absolutely nailed the look. It's really like watching the pages come alive in the trailer even if I can tell the adaptation of the story is a complete hodgepodge of the manga.
You should review the Wandering Earth! The graphic is quite impressive considering its $50m budget (yes, it made 6 times it's budget in a week). Would love to see your take on it!
On this week’s episode of Charting with Dan:
Did ‘Lego Movie 2’ *BUILD* legos to reach the top of the charts?
Has ‘Cold Pursuit’ leave people with *COLD FEET*
Hi, I’m Dan Murrell and I’m Lon Harris.
and this is Charting with Dan on Screen Junkies News!
Josh Rivera 👏
I live in a place in California where it was raining this weekend, but no real storms or anything. Any rain is usually a deterrent here but I had to go to a showing several hours later than what I was planning because all those earlier showings were front row seats only. Our screening was packed too. So I was surprised that it did so poorly, but weather elsewhere was certainly much worse. I would be interested to see a map of ticket sales overlaid with a weather report map.
As for CGV Cinemas in Los Angeles, considering CGV is Korean based, they only show Korean movies in English subtitles and American movies with or without hardcoded Korean subtitles depending on the schedule.
Also the only 2 LA theaters (Koreatown, Buena Park) capable of showing ScreenX, which you can see in Alita: Battle Angel. Alita actually comes out on Thursday in the US, not counting previews.
Can only base this opinion on England but from my point of view theres been no buzz for Lego Movie 2 it's all about How to Train Your Dragon here.
I live in Canada and generally, the buzz here is the same as the states and there really just hasn't been that much marketing at all. Alita has been absolutely dominating my TV/internet in terms of ads and articles but nothing lego 2 related. Heck, I remember seeing far more ads for the Ninjago movie then the lego movie 2.
And in London it's not even on the big screens, no buzz or big opening really doesn't help
I got tired of HTTYD after the second one.
I still haven't be able to watch The Wandering Earth so far... Because I can't bloody get a god dame ticket! Every session of that movie at the theatre that I can reach are all sold out!!
ARRRR~~~~~~!!!! *rolling on ground*
I just love Lon Harris and Dan Murrell together. Positive discussions and informative banter. It's why I watch SJU every day!
I think the marketing was bad, they never really got the buzz the original movie had, even if the movie its still very good. Also it doesnt help that their big star Chris Pratt, who was a big draw in the first movie starting his big breakout in the mainstream, its making more headlines about other topics, like religion, engagement and even his upcoming movies, more than this movie...
The promoting didn’t seem as all enveloping this time either. For the first movie, it was every second-third ad was for The LEGO Movie. Now, I barely saw one unless I sought it out.
@@GoatPopsicle I didn't even know the movie was coming out until I saw it pop up on the upcoming releases on RT's home page. I've been utterly inundated by Alita ads for the last month but Lego movie 2? Nothing. I can't be the only one who had this experience so it doesn't shock me nobody went out to see it. They probably had no fricken clue it existed ;p
@@devilmikey00 Alita has been everywhere for me too, lol.
@fernando calles I saw a Late Night You Tube interview with Pratt and the title was about his religious beliefs. Even though I'm a massive fan of his work, I didn't want to hear him talking about 'God' or whatever, so I didn't click. So there is one example of snot having a chance to hear about his latest movie because of religion.
@@COLINHILLSWIMS In that interview he was asked about this new diet he was doing that tied into his religion. That's more on the interviewer for asking that question than Pratt answering it
If dubbing is done well, it doesn't take away from the movie. It only makes it more accessible to people. Disney is a perfect example, not only did movies like Frozen and Moana become hits but the songs from those ovies translated to other languages did as well
*ovaries
Thank you JTE for letting us have our charting :)
I find charting so interesting. It was never something I thought of before, Thanks Dan!
Actually my local Regal was one of those 64 screens carrying 'the Wandering Earth', I was curious, but ultimately settled on 'Stan and Ollie'. I am planning on 'Cold Pursuit' tomorrow, I got the idea it was a dark comedy from the trailer, and that was what intrigued me.
Looks like a newsroom rather than that comfy nerd den but its fine
I'm so excited for HTTYD. It seems to have an older audience than the lego movies, so I think it will do really well.
i am from Hong Kong and part of a movie's promotion is that it comes out *earlier* than in the US. it will be written on posters or end of trailers
See Dan, this is what happens when you don’t properly make an Honest Trailer for LEGO Batman; nobody’s aware about the second LEGO Movie, so it disappoints.
Another lesson in budgeting your movie correctly. I read The Favourite had a $15 mil budget and has made about $70 mil worldwide (or almost 5x its budget), while Vice apparently cost $60 mil and is limping towards making that back (which we know for this show that you need to make at least 2x budget to turn a profit, so it would be considered a financial failure).
One of my favorite weekly traditions.
Just wait until they make a commentary for these, and everyone starts watching that instead. Lol.
the wandering earth is WORTH watching! saw it twice already.
Interesting charting! Gonna have to get used to the new background oh my lord. But I love that Extreme Job is hanging on in the top ten
Oh wow new set!
Due to time constraints I didn’t get online at all last week and I realized that out of everything I watch online Screen Junkies and SJU were the only channels I really missed.
I think that’s a statement to the quality of the people who work there. There isn’t one person who appears on your channel that I don’t thoroughly enjoy watching.
Watched the recently uploaded Producers Roundtable hosted by the Hollywood Reporter. Kevin Feige being the one person wearing a hat during an hour long conversation immediately made me think of Dan, which probably means I watch YT too much. Thanks for the video, SJ team.
I'm so happy you guys decided to do charting today
Do the domestic numbers include us here in Canada? Thanks for making Mondays awesome.
The wandering Earth is an insane premise, but I think I need to see it.
I wish we could see a regional breakdown of how Lego Movie 2 did because the PNW, which is full of nerds who love the Lego series, was buried under record-breaking snowfall and, being unequipped for this kind of snow, roads were closed, people were burying themselves in their homes, etc.
Great charting! I still need to get used to this new set, but I still love you guys ❤️
Johana Bartušková The set reminds me of watching daytime news in the 1990s.
Wolf Warrior 2 is on Hulu. I tried to watch it. Made it about 15 minutes and couldn't do it anyone. It's really bad.
Definitely avoid the first one as well. Other then a hilarious scene involving a mini-gun to introduce the villain the action isn't that great and it's also a straight-up a Chinese military propaganda film. I mean it's not like we don't have those jingoistic military flicks over here but Wolf Warrior 1 is cringe-inducing in its attempt.
Saw your hat Dan and thought it said OSU and I thought "Dan's an Oregon State alumni?!" But alass, I was mistaken.
I'm hyped to watch 'Wandering Earth'! The trailer sold me. Thanks for talking about it
Dan, you are a legend. Never change, only grow.
0:32 Like the random Star Trek reference there. You like Star Trek almost as much as Mike Stoklasa!
You guys gotta see Wandering Earth on imax. It’s stunning!!!
The Wandering Earth was playing in exclusively 3D IMAX at my local theater for two or three days before The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. I cannot move my eyes fast enough to read 3D Subtitles, so I did not see it. It is no longer available in my market.
I always love watching this, especially when Lon gets to visit!
I was surprised that on my country, there's an audience for Alita Battle Angel.
But at best, Our country can only contribute more or less $1,000,000 to $4,000,000 on Alita's Global box office.
I'm seeing this Lego Movie 2 on Friday with my mom and niece and seeing HTTYD 3 on march 1st
'The wandering Earth' has a great poster, I might have to check it out!!!
So is the wandering earth any good? I can't really tell anything about it from the poster.
Lol dayum The Wandering Earth made a total killing in China!
This is there big time for movies.
~3/4 of their population is on vacation right now for the next month. Some of their middle of the week nights are bigger than some American weekends right now.
it contrast between chinese january moves and US january movies is huge
Lol i love how you used the zendaya is meechee poster for small foot haha
Love this show
The marketing for Happy Death Day 2 U looked identical to the marketing for the first film, so I think a lot of people just didn't understand what they were seeing
Charting with Dan sent me on a journey through the internet. Not expecting to see The Wandering Earth anytime soon in my rural area. This movie is based on a book of short stories by Cixin Liu. At this post, it is only $16.00 on Amazon. So I have just ordered an actual PHYSICAL book. Weird, how a video review/charting show on You Tube got me to buy a book, I feel like a living breathing anachronism. Thanks guys !?
Mariko True a conversation on SJU got me to buy Snowcrash and I loved that. Thanks, Joe! Hope you enjoy the *gasp* book! :)
I think it was bad time of year. All USA is covered in snow. LEGO movie 2 was amazing movie.
I do think the weather my have had an impact - shit weather in a lot of major cities
you need to watch Wandering Earth!!! it was so good
I don't remember seeing very many ads for Lego 2. Seen a bunch for Alita and that Rebel Wilson movie. I won't be going to any of them though. I do want to go see Aquaman though... before it exits the theaters.
I watch all movies with subtitles on (except at the cinema), you just get so much more out of the script and it always amazes me when I watch older movies, just how many of the words you don't notice. I get really annoyed when I buy a DVD or blu-ray that does not have subtitles!! It all started by default because we put subtitles on in our house so we could still pay attention when kids were crying etc. (no, we weren't ignoring them!!) and also for watching movies at night in bed.
I also generally watch anime in Japanese with subtitles because often the subtitles are based on the translation so if you watch them in English, the subtitles do not match up with the words!!
I tried to help the Lego Movie! But western Washington is under a pile of snow and the roads are complete shit.
The Midwest too
FYI, Alita's story is off because the original script was 187 pages as written by Cameron, Rodriguez cut 60 pages.
i feel like watching charting is the closest i’ll ever get to watching sports commentary
20:40 Agreed!! I would love to see more big budget int'l movies become more accessible domestically. Here in Montreal (Canada), we have so many summer film festivals that you *can't* watch everything without, like, time travel lol, and so you miss out on their limited releases. There are some really great fun movies to discover!
The first int'l blockbuster movie I got to see at one of those fests was a Russian movie: "Black Lightning" (2009) www.imdb.com/title/tt1569364/ It was really fun! It had so many familiar elements, and was definitely a "gateway movie" in that it wasn't an unusual art piece that I couldn't explain the plot to Joe Somebody. "After a teenage boy discovers his old car can fly, he uses it to fight crime."
Nice new set! Is it only the set that’s new or did you all finally have to move locations because a certain company owned the building you were in?
Thanks JTE!
Not going to lie, I saw all the Lego promos but had no clue when it was coming out. The release date info was kinda confusing. Also I’m glad Taraji’s movie did well!!!
What about the weather? Lots of snow and rain everywhere. Maybe more people stayed home.
I cannot escape rebel wilson and trailers for this movie, how have yu managed that!! Lol
I like the new setup!
Now I kinda want to see Wandering Earth. Would love to see more Chinese movies stateside.
As Walt Disney wisely said: You can't top pigs with even more pigs.
american aversion to subtitles is so stupid. the the rest of the world watch your movies with subtitles. it's not a big deal.
I just watched Alita yesterday, and sure it has some issues, but I just had the biggest grin all over my face while watching it.
It's almost unbelievable what a good adaptation you can get if you have a Director, now Producer/Writer, who actually gives a fuck about the source material and understands it... I'm looking at you Ghost In The Shell...
Always rooting for Dan, and love that his spin-off now has higher production value considering the new set. In terms of spin-offs, this show may soon rival Frasier!
Neither of you mentioned that Dan is wearing a LEGO shirt, haha
1080P stream! Awesome
Lon - you have an Asian theater near you that plays current movies? Man - I need to move to a bigger city. I know that our indie theater has played some Asian movies recently (The Handmaiden, Train to Busan, etc) and get good audiences.
Dan - even I have seen Wolf Warrior 2 - get with it! (The movie is very cheesy fun. It is like an 80s pro-America action movie - except replace America with China)
I saw Wolf Warrior 2 on Netflix. You're right, it's like a Chinese version of Missing in Action or Delta Force.
I saw Wolf Warrior (1) on Netflix and agree it is pure Chinese military/Communist state/One China propaganda.
Dan, if you or any of the SJ crew are reading this, do you think that since The Wondering Earth is doing so well, that it will be allowed a larger release before the end of its run? Or do you think the majority of American audiences will be forced to wait for a Blu-ray release?
Did they finally kick you out of the SJU set to tear down the building?
In Germany "How to train a Dragon" has Way more buzz than the Lego Movie and the "Dragon"showings were packed.
Look out for Wandering Earth staying at top of global chart 2019 for a while, $800M+ just in Chinese market could be its total, and even Captain Marvel isn't 100% guaranteed to out-gross that worldwide, if that underperforms, we may have to wait until Endgame to surpass that.
Lego movie 2 was just as great as the first movie, I think there's just less buzz around it because it's not as surprising that it's so funny yet deep this time around. That and Spider-verse coming out a couple months ago probably hurt because they have very similar vibes from Lord and Miller.
I saw the film on sunday and the story continuing on from where the first film left off was quite great. The easter eggs with making references to Blade Runner 2049, Mad Max Fury Road, The Book of Eli and other pop culture references like Die Hard, Back to the Future Jurassic Park was a nice running gag and of course Justice League stole the show because the amount of jokes they made about that film, especially with Batman was hilarious. They even did a better job with the time travel storyline with Emit when he encountered his future self and fighting him.
Thank you JTE
Lon's shirt is amazing
I just havent been able to go see movies recently lol even if Id like to go see it
I literally did not even know that a new Lego Movie was opening until all the RUclips reviews started popping up in my feed, and I love movies and that's how bad they marketed that movie
WHOA new set! What was the deal with having to ditch the old one?
The shutdown of Defy and SJ becaming a part of Fandom (for months already actually)
@@me45116 Thanks for the reply. I knew about the shift from Defy to Fandom, but just assumed they rented the space. Is this the beginning of a full move or just downsizing?
@@BelieveInKnize as far as I understood from twitter, they replacing all the studios for new ones this week
@@me45116 Appreciate the response! What a nice interaction this has been.
I Love Lon! Can we keep him here permanently
You gonna talk about the creepy looking blue genie from Aladdin?
I think a lot of people will be waiting for next week the see The LEGO Movie 2. It's President's Day weekend, so people will have at least Monday off. In New York, kids get the whole week for a "winter recess".
I'm still hoping to see Predator and Alien-Beauty and the Beast artwork will be back in the background. I will hope until they tell me otherwise.
Subs > Dubs
I love the LEGO Movie 2. It has much better storyline, character building and really entertaining for me, a parent who has legohead kids. It has a really good theme (almost on pixar level). It is really entertaining and fun. It has less meta moment than the first one, which was full of metajokes and had less story. To tell the truth I fell asleep watching in. Why it doesn't meet the expectations at the box office?
- Maybe the market is oversaturated and the novelty factor has fade out of a Lego animation.
- Usually I don't pay attention the critics but it has really lackluster reviews. I just saw it because of my kids and I think it would have been a mistake to miss it.
I've wanted to see "Alita" since the first trailer.
I hope Cold Pursuit catches on. I thought it was fantastic.
I think the second LEGO movie was also hurt by the Government Shutdown. People have bills to pay and they're not spending money on going out to movies yet. Also, the weather! Arctic temps don't inspire me to go out for anything!🌬💧❄
Kenya Brunson I blame climate change
GD'it what is this 'different' behind them?
Ps. Good luck with the new studio guys
