It was just a long experience from where I had to learn a lot of things. This is my biggest masterpiece and even if it is not considered for some people a good enough level for me it is by far the best project I ever hosted. For future projects I believe in better organization and communication.
You have come a long way since Crunchy Town. The fact that this level is completed at all is impressive. You are indeed an inspiration as a collab host and a creator.
I completely agreed with everything you said here, one suggestion though, please slow down the swapping of background gameplay. It changes like every 5 seconds and it's extremely overwhelming to look at.
This is some stuff that I did when hosting PABRIK, as one of the main host of the level. We tried our best trying to stick with one theme/concept, which is about factory themed. We're making sure everything is planned and organized as possible, like having some Google Spreadsheets for organising groups ID, color IDs, editor layers, writing down each member's vision, each part progress, etc. While to me it might not be the most cohesive megacollab out there due to contest deadline constraints, but I'd say it is the best project we've ever done as the whole Indonesian community. Because every single of the members were very collective trying out our best to have a good communication, stick to one vision as the whole, good organizations, etc. And as the final product finished, we are proud what we came up with, proud to be working on a project collectively as the whole member (especially as Indonesian like ourselves).
These things are also why my World Gauntlet collab fell though. I wasn't in charge, but I saw all these things happen in real time. I was given little to no feedback about my part and had no idea what the state of the level was going to be before or after mine. I was told to build a "bright modern minimal" section which is the style I specialized in at the time, but upon receiving the level, had to transition from a black background rock and cave themed part. I had no idea how to handle this, so the level gets a big fade to black and then cut to white as it was the only way to keep the pacing intact. I had no idea who would be decorating the second half of the gameplay I made, how they wanted structuring or groups set up, or what style they'd be building, so I couldn't really go for anything ambitious with my decorated section either, and couldn't set up the next person for success either.
Very good points. Another thing i wouldve mentioned in the collab process (especially during feedback) is honesty. If you have people building for you (literally free labor), it can be very hard to tell them you dont like something and end up with a part that you dislike, even though it couldve been avoided by simply being honest and providing clear and specific changes during that process. This extends well beyond gd creating to really any medium of art. Great video tho, i really appreciate your own honesty while being one of the creators of emerald realm
That explains a lot, as a game designer, I really recognize all those problems in our first game projects x) communication is just the key of a team project
I think another issue this level suffered from is too much ambition from the start. while having the idea for an ambitious project and well as having the team and the skills to create it seems like it would be destined for perfection, planning a level with a whopping 18 parts is destined to not only have inconsistencies, but will be destined to take absolutely forever to make which leads to even problems with inconsistency, communication issues, etc. This level honestly taught me to plan a project with a somewhat small or reasonable vision, and then if all goes well THEN expand from there. don’t map out a project with ambitious out into the stratosphere, instead build one floor at a time so that if something goes wrong, the whole structure won’t completely fall apart
Honestly, i did thought that some part in the level is missing some the details, though I don't know what to have for it. Overall, i think the production is well rounded and mesmerizing enough.
This is very well said! I feel like the level could have been so much Better if they didnt messed up the organization of the level, singular parts are really good even tho some of them are hated because they are not as good as others such as culuc etc, they are still very old, we must remember this level is still 3/4 years old, so i can see why CastriX had the urge to finish it instead of redoing everything from scratch, anyway im sure upcoming collabs will be able to achive theyr full potential by following these steps, very nice video.
I'm finding ER quite dissapointing. The main problem for me is the gameplay and the IMMENSE amout of bugs. The level isn't fun to play for me. It's only fun to watch.
banger video tbh. while emerald realm’s production was honestly a bit of a nightmare sometimes, it does act as a really good lesson on planning, cohesion, and communication
This is essentially how every successful company or just teams of people in general facilitate from. I very much agree with just about everything said in this video. I hope this sort of stuff is echoed more throughout the community, as I come to realize people don’t typically discuss things with other participants in gd collabs, which is rather disheartening to see in a team environment where people should be talking to one another if I’m being honest. Nevertheless, very well-edited and scripted video!
This is exactly the type of things that make me question if I really am a human I mean from what I've seen the level's beautiful and I haven't looked much into detail (I never do) so to me it's not that inconsistent, it looks great all throughout and I don't get why everyone analyzes levels down to the very atom of their decoration (and I'm saying this as someone who overanalyzes almost anything), to me every part is eye-pleasing so I like it a lot Also this argument of "CuLuC's part is ×10 better than anyone else's" is so dumb, of course not everyone is as talented, a mega collab is bound to have inconsistent deco and I don't get why people are still complaining about this lol
While the collab may not have been well executed, this level still blows my mind in every single part of it. The quality might not be consistent, but honestly you gotta be nitpicking really hard to say that it actually ruins the level.
@@harpsbored4621nah honestly it is so unfun to play. Literally everything in the level is unreadable and it’s just overall very learny for a medium demon (also 3 mins). It lags for many players too but I don’t have that issue.

Currently making a game with someone but usually we're always in a Discord vc when doing anything with the game so I don't think communication is a problem for us lol
I just beat the level and it's basically a medium demon that might as well be a hard demon just because of how unoptimized and laggy it is, it was clearly a really ambitious project, but you could argue it was a bit too ambitious because the level is basically unplayable on lower end devices and the gameplay isn't exactly great either, with messy transitions and some parts being way harder than others. The decoration is amazing but unfortunately, can't say I enjoyed actually playing the level itself because of all the issues with it.
Many of what he said is true and some of the flaws of the collab are very obvious but that still doesn’t stop this form being a very cool level with cool parts and good creators. It just could have been planned out better
Ok, the collab may have been bad in this standpoint. But honestly, and truly honestly I couldn’t care less about that even a little bit. The end result is a masterpiece and I’m just a player, I’m playing for epic levels and this is on the top rung of levels.
the half done horse at 6 seconds in is a really good representation of how i felt about emerald realm, because of a few parts looking ok, and culucs part being one of the best ever the main problem is the optimization tho
I like how this video touches the more managerial and business sides of building levels, especially when it comes to establishing and managing teams. It can't be underestimated how important it is to communicate to your fellow members; those seemingly little things build up and compound. Definitely my personal favorite video ❤
