It was fought between a small group of supporters and relatives of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and the much larger forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph.
After the death of Muawiya I in 680 CE, his son Yazid ascended to the Umayyad caliphate. Hussain ibn Ali, along with many other Muslims, refused to acknowledge Yazid's legitimacy, as they believed his rule to be unjust and his lifestyle un-Islamic. Hussain received invitations from the people of Kufa, who promised to support him if he led a rebellion against Yazid. Trusting their promises, Hussian A.S set out from Mecca to Kufa.
