The music of Depeche Mode

- Formed more than 40 years ago, the English electronic group Depeche Mode likes to call itself "the biggest alternative band in the world." And yet, while lead singer Dave Gahan and lead songwriter Martin Gore began 2023 with a new album, "Memento Mori," and a packed tour schedule, they are doing so without their bandmate, Andy Fletcher, who died unexpectedly in May 2022. Gahan and Gore talked with correspondent Luke Burbank about their success, their addictions, and why they credit music with saving their lives.

Nice to see this legendary, unique band getting exposure for their remarkable 40 year career and STILL putting out wonderful new music.
I saw them live a few years back and was amazed how the stadium had people from 8-80…perhaps the most inclusive and multi-generational alternative band of all time 🤍
That's why they are so.loved.
the cure rank higher!
@@levisguy53this. I saw them in Atlanta a couple months back and the crowed was full of people from all ages and backgrounds. It was truly inspiring to see
@@mohofojo8129 same when i saw them outside Boston in june, the kid next to me was 9 and had see the show the night before in montreal!
@@levisguy53Robert Smith is the better musician. But I’d argue Depeche have tapped into more psyches over the years with music that’s relatable yet always to the left of mainstream. At any rate, thank the music gods we get to still appreciate both decades later.
Depeche Mode! These guys are for sure part of my life soundtrack. RIP Andy Fletcher. Love ❤️ you Dave and Martin. #helpmeunderstand
No nos olvidemos de Alan. Fue pieza clave en el grupo.
@@gordongekko8033 Of Course ❤
I’ve been a fan since ‘83, while it’s not feasible for me to follow a band around on tour, I have been fortunate enough to have seen DM for every album tour except one. They will always be my go to when I need a mood boost.
I so love Depeche Mode ,like Pet Shop Boys,Tears for Fears & a lot of 80s english band all their songs sound so beautiful ,it never fades.
well said.
Me too
Erasure too
Me too…Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys is still my go - to music!!
This year - 2023 I saw Duran Duran in August and just attended Depeche Mode last night at the iconic FORUM in Los Angeles (12 - 12 - 23) Last year on October 16 I saw Pet Shop Boys at another iconic Los Angeles landmark, The HOLLYWOOD BOWL. Lost my voice from screaming so much in all three concerts !!
Violator was the first CD I bought. I still remember begging my dad to take me to Best Buy. I had saved money up to get it, and that album still sounds just as fresh and riveting today. Although Black celebration hokds a special place in my hard and Everything counts. Really miss Alan as an integral part of the band and, of course, rest peacefully Fletch. This music is life!
Alan Wilder… miss him and does DM’s music. never the same after he left
Absolute Greatness! We need Depeche Mode Forever 🙌🏽
A wonderful segment that gets a much-deserved wince every time the narrator can’t pronounce Dave’s last name correctly. You’d think a reporter for Sunday Morning would do his research. 😂
Yeah…showing clips of Alan while talking about Vince.😂
Music for the Masses is one of my top five albums. I still get chills listening to the intro of Never Let Me Down Again.
I was a fan from the first moments of sparkling keyboard watching "Just Can't get Enough" on MTV and they just kept getting better and better. I saw them live at at outdoor venue in Atlanta during a bit of a rain storm and it has remained one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Rest in Peace, Fletch
They are the one band that has been with me through ups and downs in life. They will always be my forever band. We all have grown up with DM. ❤
The greatest band in the world. We can't wait to see them 3 times this coming October.
I was a teenager in the eighties. "Personal Jesus" and "People Are People. are classic songs from my youth. It is great to hear them making new music.
They’ve consistently made music since 81.
its hillarious AF when american tv station pretends to like depeche mode after 40 years 😂😂😂
Same with motorsports. The US is always behind with both.
This is real music, real artists, thank you for doing what you love Dave and Martin, long live DM!
Ridiculous interview! How can you talk about DM’s history, success, trajectory and not mention Alan Wilder once???!!!! Vince Clarke was mentioned…Alan was the structure and electronic innovation of DM’s music!!!
My love for them is beyond measure. I am elated to see them live once again soon. This time it will be a Family event, my two children whom know many of their songs by heart both wanted to come. See you in October ♥️
"We're not a band, we're a cult." - Fletch
Así es.Amén!
Depeche Mode is one of the best bands of all time.
Dave hasn't sounded this good live in YEARS AND YEARS! 😍😍
Seriously, they couldn't pronounce Dave's last name correctly?? C'MON!
They had me at People Are People in '84! ❤ Been loving DM ever since! Rest easy Fletch. 😔🙏🏾🕊️❤
Dave Ga-han?? Seriously CBS? lmfao It's pronounced Gone. Such amateurs.
It’s Gahan, like gone. Not Ga-han 😂
After all these years and some still can't pronounce Dave's name properly. For the folks in the back the "h" is silent.😅
It reminds me of an old A Current Affair bit back in the 90’s when they said his name as “Gay-han” 🥴
More like "Ga-an"
Thank you Depeche Mode for making music I've enjoyed most of my life. Drove from Boise to see them in Sacramento at the start of the Memento Mori tour. I can't wait to see you again in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
Band of my youth and adult life. Always find a song to carry me through the rough and good moments of life. My kids now are fans of Depeche Mode .
It's pronounced Dave GONE not GAHAWN or GAHAAN. The H is silent.
Black Celebration is my favorite album of theirs.
Agreed, it will always be my favorite.❤
Classic. My top three are the Berlin Trilogy.😊
Yes. An absolute classic. The track 'A Question Of Time' is such a fantastic song.
Most underrated of their albums but probably their best. It’s my favorite album of theirs.
Definitely one of my top favorites!! There are so many it's difficult to choose. I'm sure many of us know every aspect of the music and the lyrics. I can jam to their songs in my mind, I know them so well. 😊
I’ve been a fan since I was 14. As I’m transitioning to my next life, I’d love to hear Depeche Mode in the background. 🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🕊️🙏🏼
"And when I die, I expect to find him laughing."😊
My sister and 19 yr old niece are going to see them together in Ohio and me and my 16 year old son are driving 2.5 hours to see them in Florida. I've seen them twice before and my sis has seen them once before. They sound AWESOME live, inside or outside. If you have a chance to see them inside, take it! Either way, they are amazing and worth seeing.
I've seen more than 200 bands live and they are the best, by far! I highly recommend to see them now if you can. Any time now may be their last tour. It's why I had to see them again now. They have been my favorite since 1987, Music for the Masses. Their music and lyrics are second to none and their fans are magnificent!
When are they coming to Ohio?
@@Baconpretzel-e8n November 10th Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, Cleveland, OH
They were great 30 years ago. I would watch them 10 years ago. Nowadays? No, they cannot sing anymore, and new songs are derivative and unremarkable. They should stop touring.
I saw them in San Antonio in April at the very start of the tour this year. Hands down best concert I’ve ever been to! Everyone: definitely go see them while they are on tour, if you possibly can!!!
I flew from LA to Frankfurt Germany to see them this summer! :) Enjoy the show!
One of the best shows I've ever attended was Depeche Mode at NY's Jones Beach amphitheater. As evening fell, with the water and boats in the background, under a picture-perfect clear starlit sky...omigoodness. And I agree totally about the healing power of music. When all else fails, music has saved and soothed me. And Depeche has played a huge part throughout my life. It's No Good and Never Let Me Down Again always gets me swayin'! ☺
depeche mode was one of the best most consistent bands of the 80s amazing they're one of the very few 80s bands still together and they're still putting out good music 40 years later
My favorite band since 1986. They have provided a soundtrack to my life though the years. Seen them live at least 10 times. Can never get enough.
Been to every tour since music for the masses - seeing them 4 times on this tour. Thanks for the epic soundtrack to life DM!
U r ride or die❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just saw them for the 2nd time in Cleveland this year. Still absolutely amazing, I will see them as many more times as I possibly can.
Depeche Mode, the band and their songs, mean so much to me, and to millions of people, especially anybody that felt like the didn’t fit in, or that have been through so much crap in life, like I have. They’ve been a lifesaver. RIP Andy Fletcher.
Depeche Mode - Soundtrack of my life!
It bring tears to my eyes.... YES! Their music safed my life for so so so many times!!! It is like Dave said..... "lift me, changed my spirit, changed the way I feeld..... SAVE ME MANY MANY TIMES"!!!!!
One of greatest moments of my life was walking along an Icelandic black sand beach listening to Depeche Mode. It was a transcendent moment I will always remember.
Thank you for sharing.
I enjoyed this very much but butchering Dave’s name was harsh to hear several times! 😂
I was like…. Wait, have I been pronouncing wrong after all these years? I cringed to when I first heard it yesterday on the show.
There is now a new generation of Depeche Mode fans that got into the music from their parents. I’ve been to several concerts where entire families were there. It’s really cool to see parents and children bonding over music.
Parents got into them because of me.
@@JackPeloquin that’s awesome!!
i’m 24 and brought my mother to see them for the first time last night!
3 generations for me: I listened to them on the radio in 85, found my mom's Black Celebration cassette in 86 and I was hooked!! And I've brought my son to DM concerts since Angel when he was 8.
Depeche Mode forever!!❤
Had their music on mixed cassette tapes in 1984…thanks to lower Manhattan and Village record stores.
i played the f out of black celebration on cassette
When you hear the music, it takes you to a special place and time. The music so documents my life memories, my heart races and tears flow down my cheek. Very very special to give your fans that gift.
Soothing my ears for 40 years 👩🦳My mental health THANKS YOU for the music ❤☮
So does mine. I don’t know how I lived my whole life until 2021 without them and their beautiful music.
Thank God for Depeche Mode ❤.
The anxiety about "not using traditional instruments" is still a thing with non guitar production based music dominating the charts nowdays.
Depeche Mode is such an important reference in the electronic and alternative music scene, its one of my favorite bands from childhood back in the 90s.
Still relevant after all these years. DM is the soundtrack to my life. Grateful for their music, sound and melodies. DM Devotee for ever!
I first heard Catching Up with Depeche Mode back in '86. My friend from school loaned me the cassette. She said I had to check it out. Since then, they have been my all-time favorite band. They ARE the greatest band ever! This is a fact, not an opinion lol.
Thank you CBS for interviewing and sharing my favorite band!❤
We humbly beg for the DM experience at the Sphere, Las Vegas!
I became a die hard DM fan at a very young age. I must have been about 7 years old. It was 82' or 83'. I was standing in my suburban Pennsylvania driveway when I heard the next door neighbor playing "People are People" coming out of the second story window. DM means the world to me. I'm very surprised to see this US news outlet talking about DM. Thank you.
In this one instance, I am beyond proud to say: I am happily a life-long member of this cult xD DM has remained my one constant throughout life. Thank you for EVERYTHING, lads
This is the very essence of Depeche Mode, like anew 🎉 good to view Sunday morning show 😀 👌 and I like 👍 the best ❤😊❤😊
This guy doesn’t know Depeche Mode. Horrible Journalism. You mention Vince Clarke, but show pics of Alan Wilder. Don’t even mention that Vince and Alan left. They were responsible for most of the music you used for this video.
The first leg of their Music for the Masses Tour was my first official concert without my parents. November, 1987. 8th grade. The month before this, mom and dad had taken me to see U2’s Joshua Tree Tour in Chicago. But that particular Depeche Mode show, without my parents, was symbolic of so many things that were happening in my life at the time.
My friend and I had 1st row (my parents had the number of a ticket broker on speed dial) however we got scared of all of the punks and alternative guys and instead opted to sit elsewhere, further back! Looking at that now, I was scared to acknowledge that I was gay and for some reason their music, much like Siouxsie and the Banshees, New Order and The Smiths, would come to not only comfort me but those bands helped shape my identity and my aesthetics. Liking those bands in 1987 was like putting a target on your back- whether you were gay or not it didn’t matter. You were marked. And there was no turning back. You either embraced it or you didn’t. So, you’d better believe that by July of 1990, as I was about to start 11th grade, my 1st row ticket for the Violator Tour has me up front , dancing to Nitzer Ebb, who opened for them and ten feet from Dave for almost two hours. I’d started to acknowledge and accept myself through their music and artistry.
Freshman year of college was Walking in my Shoes and the rest is history. I got to experience all of that not as nostalgia, but as it was happening in real time. If you weren’t there back then, it’s just really hard to fully describe what we were all going through at the time. But the music helped shape all of us. It was our armor. I don’t know if it like that now- or if it’s that strong- at least for the Queer Community- as it was regarding those bands back in the day.
March, 2023: my husband took me to see DM in Los Angeles for my 50th birthday. Everything just hit me that night. My mortality, their mortality, those we’ve lost, people we no longer speak to.
And through it all, I can say that Depeche Mode have always, unequivocally been a part of my waking and unconscious life.
And will continue to be until I become a ghost, again.
Thank you.
Danny Hirschhorn, Los Angeles
Probably most UNDERRATED band… ever. 🤔😊👍🏼
Perhaps by British critics, but not really elsewhere, I believe.
Your research on Fletch is wrong. He died BEFORE the album got started, not "just as the album was finished". Fletch heard some of Martin's demos, but not the end result. Get your facts right!
Long Live Depeche Mode!Hands down The Best Alternative Band in the World!
What TALENT!!! Both of them are accomplished on their own but together they RULE the world❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ memento Mori is the bomb... I'm 60.... they give me hope there is still so much more to life😁
Great to see DM profiled, have loved their music for 40 yrs and still listening in 2023! ❤
Have seen them 3 times so far this year, US and Europe. I’ll be at three more shows in the fall and so far one show next year. Nothing like a DM show and crowd. 🥰🥰🥰❤❤❤
Beyond age... they are eternal PUNKS, that kind of rebels spirit still prevail and it's still a lot of fun indeed. Growing old...we feel like having a heart as big as the universe, holding in our dearest collection of music ...milion of iconic tracks and memories, yeah, how many . ..Ravel interpretations do you prefer? High school students of Brasil made the most emotional Bolero version above all, that's the power of music. That's how it works. Only God knows how come, we have weird feelings, l feel like an eagle kind of mom, when l see my beloved babies free to fly on their own, yeah, l just feel happy to sit and watch...music happenings make of our lives a better place, you can bet on it guys
One of the best concerts I ever saw was Depeche Mode at the Seattle Coliseum back in '89/'90. They are amazing live band. I only knew their music in passing before that show. Left it as a massive fan. They are so talented!
Fletch didn't pass just when the album was done, he passed just before they were to start creating it...
Depeche is gold
Well... not creating it. Recording it. The songs were already written and the melodies existed... they just hadn't recorded it yet.
Fantastic band that always stayed relevant. Memento Mori is a great album.
Very much looking forward to seeing them in November. Was a teenager in the 80s and they were always a favorite of mine. This is the first time I'll see them live, checking that item off my bucket list!
I'm in awe of all the superfan comments! DM and fans are awesome! I hope they continue to make music for a long time. Their music is timeless.
Been a fan almost as long as the band itself has existed. I was at that Rose Bowl concert too. Great show! And it’s amazing that they are still filling stadiums and arenas after all these years!
Wish Alan would come back….. sounds crazy but….
At some point, greatness gets recognized no matter how many decades mainstream media have opted to ignore them. Guess who matured into the godfathers of rock while others got the limelight. Love it. The model for any alternative band looking for the template to stay true to yourself and your music, and gaining the masses in their own way.
Martin’s response to the question about how Dave’s addiction affected him was so empathetic and classy. ♥️
I remember the stories about Dave in the 80's and his Heroin addiction and thought to myself "Oh God I hope he beats that Demon" because I knew what a horrific addiction that would be to conquer. Glad he is still with us!
A beautiful glimpse of their friendship and love for one another!! ❤❤❤
Martin was hurting too. He'd had a seizure and his alcoholism finally reared its ugly head.
Only the BEST BAND IN THE WORLD! 43 concerts under my belt with 2 more when they return to the states👍👍 I’m the true super fan!
I have been a fan of DM all of my adult life. I have seen them 7 times in live concerts and plan on seeing them again next year for their extended tour in Europe. I haven't sat down in my seat at any of their concerts. I've been on my feet, dancing and singing along to all their songs and enjoying the experience along with other concert goers who, just like me, are on their feet and soaking in the music. Something magical happens at these concerts. The oneness of our humanity comes alive there. We are all one huge family and we all love the band and each other. Total strangers feeling connected and having the greatest time together.
Beautifully said. That's the best part of a concert for me.
A couple years ago my friend's 16 y/o daughter was so excited to introduce us to an amazing band. Their sound was unlike anything she had heard before and way better than anything current. I gifted her my Depeche Mode cassette tape collection and laughed. Happy she has good taste in music and her father still has a boom box with a tape player.
Why didn’t he mention the addition of Alan Wilder and that’s why they had good songs after Vince left?
Depeche Mode, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., New Order and The Cure, being out on tour, are proving they are the true kings of classic alt/indie rock. Not that distraction that came out of Seattle. One could wish that R.E.M. and Sonic Youth could somehow muster up one more gig. But disdain for the recording industry (R.E.M.) and a bitter divorce (Sonic Youth) are two things that are hard to get past.
You just had to label them "rock" so that no one accused you in liking "pop music"? At least DM is not disco, eh?
No, not really. I'm just anti-Seattle. I'm speaking for the whole underground movement, in general. Pop or rock. From the Velvets to Tame Impala.
You just listed a good chunk of my all time favorite bands. Every one of them listed would probably be in my top twenty. I did like the Seattle bands however, and those bands never forgot to credit what influenced them from the eighties.
Personal Jesus and Policy of Truth were great posing, 'too much time on your hands' goth teen anthems. Nice they're carrying on like others with a member loss.
Andy passed away before the album was started. He didn't get to hear anything from it.
Why do they always mispronounce David’s last name 🤦♂️
Saw them this weekend. They were incredible!!!
I was at that concert in the Rose bowl!
Me too! A highlight! Remember when it rained? I think it was during Blasphemous Rumors (or maybe I just thought it should have rained during that song!)
Don’t know who I would be without this band
Depeche Mode was the gate way to Alternative music for me in 1989. Then Kurt Cobain unleash alternative music to the masses in 1991 when I was 19, my senior year of High school... here I am typing this at 51. Forever DM!♥
80’s new wave. There is nothing like that!
As a young foreign student in Manhattan in the 1980's, Depeche Mode were my constant companion and refuge via my Sonny Walkman... and now a retired senior citizen in my native Third World country, Depeche Mode hasn't left me via my smartphone.
Thanks DM for your music, that deeply resonates with me... then, now and forever!💗💗💗
Nice touching story. But just say your back in your home country.❤
Best band ever. Seen them live multiple times and it’s an incredible experience every time. Roll on January 2024
You think he could have learned how to pronounce Dave's last name correctly 😞
SRSLY!!! It's so painful.
How, after 40 years, can they STILL be mispronouncing Dave's last name? It's easy, it's like "GONE". Easy! A spoonful of reasearch, please...
Why can't you pronounce GAHAN right? It's one syllable
You'd think the narrator would ask David Gahan to pronounce his name correctly. GAHN, not GAY-HAN.
The biggest alternative band and so rightly so.
They are part of my life with their music...I've gone down several different roads myself & believe that I ended up where I should be. I enjoy their music now with a smile remembering that beautiful young woman on the dance floor & knowing all that she's accomplished so far...
My favorite band of all time next to Duran Duran forever. Can't wait till October 2023 to see them again.
Great job mispronouncing Dave's last name.
Music should be described as it is... a VERY unique & separate means of interaction with the world. My than even languages could or would allow. A type of magic any musician would surely attest.
My life with shape by Depeche Mode’s music thank you for all the great memories and thank you for getting me through the hard times
Thank you for this! I’m almost 50 and still play Depeche Mode every other day…their songs have been in my Iphone since Iphones came out…i will always be a fan!!
They were never a New Wave band. They were one of the first bands to play without guitars and drums. Mainly a Synth band or EDM as they call it now.
The most influential band of all time. The inspirations of their music and image can be heard and seen in pop culture in many music genres around the world. Despite all this, they are very underrated in their native UK
I wouldn't go quite that far. Very influential and important-yes. Most influential of all time- not quite.
Great interview and great friends. It’s a lot for someone to open up about addiction. It’s real and I applaud you! Good job breaking the addiction.
Dave’s last name is pronounced Gone. Go Figure.
they were the soundtrack to my alternative universe and always in my cassette walkman in the late 80s. Still a completely original and authentic sound. Love DM!
You might enjoy a more contemplative version of "Enjoy the Silence". Soothing. ruclips.net/video/Gal6D9G6Bak/видео.html
Omg... Can we pronounce Gahan properly!
Exactly what I was thinking
