I am Filipino but I find the lady narrator's accent to be rather unusual. I don't think it is a common 'Filipino accent'. Am I the only one who has observed this? I am curious as to where the accent is coming from. Maybe it is just her idiosyncratic way of speaking. Love the content of the video though. It would have been nice if they were actual video footages rather than still photos so that we could see the movement. I think the still photos also maybe make the masks look scary to Westerners or to those not familiar with the festivals. You really have to see the motion and hear the chanting and the music to appreciate the festival dancing. The sounds will resonate through your body when you are near them. Thank you for featuring and reacting to this!
@@mari_stela I agree. I couldn't put my finger on it, but you are right. It was her diction and delivery that was odd. And I don't think it was a digitally altered voice.
I'm living in Bacolod City(ever since) where the Masskara Festival takes place. Once you know the history of why this festival exists, you would actually appreciate everything about it especially the masks. I never see the mask as creepy or weird but instead, I just see a very colorful parade of people dancing so energetically to local music (with props also) and it's so much fun being in there personally. We also celebrate the electric Masskara Parade at night where the costumes and props are set/designed with colorful lights. I also agree with some comments, I think seeing these festivals in motion/video would be more fun rather than just looking at the pictures. :)
Iloilo City where I was born. Ati-Atihan in Kalibo, Aklan & Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo are both in the island of Panay. In honor of the natives (Negritoes or Aetas) when they were converted to Christianity.
Negritos/Aetas in Panay "..when they were converted to Christianity". The original version was the golden salakot, the barter of Panay between the native Aetas and the arrival of the ten muslim bornean datus in the 12th century. The story turned out to be a hoaxed hence they switched the story into someyhing in the line of a Chrustian conversion of the Panay Aetas.
I live in Silay City and I go to college in Bacolod City. My goodness, going home during the month of Masskara Festival is stressful. Crowds and traffic everywhere. However, it's very fun.
I think you will feel different towards the masks when you see them dancing graciously and beautifully. You won't be bothered by it anymore and you'll focus more on their dances. Almost all of the festivals in the PH have dance performances. Every year all of the festivals of each cities are invited to compete in the Aliwan Festival, a dance competition of all the festivals.
You have to hear the drums and you’ll feel what this festivals are all about… Dinagyang in Iloilo is cool… non stop drums that beats withbyour heart👏👏👏dancing and drinking and just celebrating… lots of foreigners love this festival..

Dinagyang is also the hall of famer Best Tourism event in the country given by The Association Tourism of the Philippines (ATOP). and the most awarded festival in the coutry for its Legacy, Innovation and Good Practices.
I understand how you feel about the Maskara or Mask Festival. But just want to say I've been able to attend that in Bacolod and it is the Coolest Festival I've seen so far. It's not creepy or scary at all. Soo awesome especially the night dancers!
Well, I have to say that Dinagyang festival of Iloilo city is the grandest festival in the Philippines. Because lots of foreigners from other countries in the world come and see the festival..aside from the local tourists and also they get invited to perform abroad.. They are always chosen to represent the Philippines...IMO..
I think you need to see the actual videos of this festival. You'll definitely appreciate and feel it more. The picture cannot give justice onto how fun and great this festivals are. You just need to be there.
I wish they would've included those grandiose floats full of flowers in Panagbenga Festival. Whoever made the video doesn't really know that it is one of the big highlights of that festival!
In the 17th century, a Spanish General brought hundreds of soldiers from Peru and Mexico to the Philippines. They were the Aztec, Mayan, and Peruvian warriors who fought alongside the Spaniards and local Filipinos against the Moros and Chinese Rebels. It was said that they never returned home after the battle was won. Perhaps, that is why there is “Native American” influence in some of the costumes you saw on the video. I could be wrong about the tribal influences.
