Thomas muller has to be mentioned for the 2010 World Cup. He had an amazing 2009/10 season and the World Cup was the cherry on top. He had only debuted for Germany a few months before the World Cup, and went on two win the golden ball and best young player of the tournament whilst Germany finished 3rd.
He was the first player who came to my mind when i read the video title. Some say Germany only went out vs Spain, because he missed that match.
@@Jonathanizer Spain were very good that tournament, you never know what would have happened had he played, but I’m very surprised Allie didn’t even mention him.
You are right. He have 12 goals in 2 world cups. In the last he did not score none, As Germany fall out of the group as last.
Maradona even got offended about Müller being at the same press conference as him cause "he's a no name" that Maradona didn't know
@@Ibarbodagoat Oh dear god. Hadn't Muller already scored three goals in the tournament by the time Germany played Argentina?
Those 90s photos lol. What a legend you are , lad.
Thomas Muller coming on the scene in 2010 as a 20yr old is a prime example of a young player establishing himself. He's had an amazing career with incredible performances and the trophies to show for it, and we can all go back to where this form really began: The 2010 FIFA World Cup
tupac shakur, absolute legend of the game.
despite being bad at shootouts
@@PunChris_92LMAO
@@PunChris_92 💀
Had hell of a SHOT on him
@@PunChris_92 I feel like thats kind of disrespectful to a legend of hip hop but ok
The ridiculous amount of research Alfie does for tournaments nobody cares about and still makes people want to watch makes him the best football RUclipsr. Your next best option is football daily and they will put every person in Watford’s squad in a tier list and they have millions more subscribers I don’t know how that makes sense love Alfie
Maqwell makes good content, Tifo does good work too
I think the second best football RUclipsr is balòn
”Tournaments nobody cares about” lmao surely footballs fans care about the world cup tournaments?
2010 break out star was Thomas Muller. He was relatively unknown (Maradonna thought he was a ball boy) and yet he became top scorer of the tournament.
🤯
4:33 Minor correction. Despite the World Cup being in Uruguay, Uruguay did not actually open play at the tournament. That was France and Mexico, with France running out 4-1 winners. The first World Cup goal thus was scored not by Pablo Dorado in Uruguay's 4-0 thrashing of Romania, but by the French Lucien Laurent.
Pablo Dorado DID, however, score the first ever goal in a World Cup FINAL.
I'm disappointed that Hagi didn't get even an honorable mention for 1994. He was a revelation and the goals he scored were superb. He also finished 4th in Balon D'or rankings.
He was already well known before that. He was at Real from 1990-92
@@JonasRodgers and even before 1990

What about Stoichkov, who actually won the ballon d'or?

No
What good players would even be on that team?
@@tlawal7 few actually
Just gave up mate
@@jangrim6330 like who? I want to know any of them.
Ozil or Muller had to be the pick in 2010 over Gyan man!
Loved the stories about the players in the 50s and before. Must've taken titanic efforts to research that and I'm sure even the most diehard football history fanatics would barely know one of those stories. So huge respect for that
Ozil and Muller are already well known before the World Cup for what they did in Bayern (Ozil was quite known even for his perfomances at Shalke before)... And as the video said, the pick are players that become stars at WC, not ones that played it well, but were already known
@@alessiodaniotti264 what they did at bayern?? Özil didn't play for Bayern he played for Bremen. and if he was known for anything than it was for his performances at Bremen and not Schalke. And Müller literally got mistaken for a ball boy by Maradona so idk how well known Müller was outside of Germany in 2010.
Asamoah Gyan featured in the 2006 world cup scoring the quickest goal of the tournament Vs Czech Republic. Prior to the 2010 world cup, he was a recognised player for Ghana. He couldn't have been the breakout star of the 2010 tournament. Muller has once again been underrated.
I would have considered Roger Milla from Cameroon as the breakout star in the 1990 World Cup, even if he was like 35 at the moment...his celebrations were also iconic!
And don´t worry, here in Argentina we also don´t know why Messi didn´t even feature in the 2006 quarterfinal game.
Roger Milla was a sensation lol
38, to be precise! haha
Milla was a veteran
At least 38.
Man had been playing professionally since the 60s.
There was talk at the time that he'd shaved a few years off his age.
Wow.... I'm learning bucketloads here. Thank you, Alfie.
2002 is my nostalgia world cup, despite being one of the least reminisced about I think! If only Roy Keane had been there to play for us 🇮🇪
Well, at least he made sure his dog was fit as all hell lol. 2002 is kinda special to me as well just cuz its the first one i ever watched.
But as a half german, its gotta be 2006/2014 for me. Seeing us destroy brazil 7-1 and then winning the whole thing was pure ecstasy.
06 cuz it was in germany and i was lucky enough to be living there at the time. The mood throughout the entire country was truly indescribable. Just one of those things u need to experience to understand, it was simply a super fun time.
Fair to say, The Career Trajectory of James Rodrigues did not go as Envisioned …. ⚽️
Perhaps the move to RM was not quite the right one. Reaplacing Özil and Di Maria just like that isn't really one of the easiest tasks if you ask me
@@dontmindme6995 he was amazing at the start, what are you on about? It was only later when Zidane came in who played without a real no. 10 that James didn't really fit the system anymore.
In his debut season he was absolutely insane, but that was under ancelotti who always loved working with him(be it real, bayern, or Everton). With Zidane it didn't work as well
@@The_Duude99 I'd still say that he probably wasn't quite as good as Özil or Di Maria, hence why it didn't lead to huge criticism that he was dropped by Zidane
@@dontmindme6995 well... It wasn't far off.
Just to give a bit of statistical context to understand just how good he was under ancelotti: he got 25 goal contributions in 29 games in laliga under ancelotti in his first season.
Those are insane numbers and his goals were absolute bangers. His chance creation numbers were also up there with the best.
When Zidane benched him it got a shit ton of backlash. The criticism just went silent when he won the CL and the team worked
Lol Messi won that Award in 2014 for marketing purposes. Even Blatter said so.
2010 has to be Thomas Müller
This'll be good! 😳Top drawer as usual Alfie.
I'll save this one for my morning cuppa here in a mo' 😄
Diego Forlan deserves a mention in the 2010 cup. Even if it was his only really great performance at a big tournament, it was enough to forever cement him in my heart. I loved watching every moment of him playing in that cup.
i think you misunderstood the meaning of "breakout star". it is young players who came as a surprise in the world cup. Forlan was already in his 30s and very well stabilished by then
VIDEO SUGGESTION: I`ve always wanted to know how the hell was Arsene Wenger appointed as Arsenal manager back in 1996. This appointment looks absolutely random at the first look. A less than mediocre French footballer, had a somehow promising start of managerial career at Monaco, after a disappointing debut at Nancy. Somehow, he go all the way in Japan, with 1-2 trophies and then he is appointed in England, as Arsenal boss?? How?? Who saw him working, who recommended him for Arsenal position? Why Arsenal board decided to appoint him. It is unbelievable! Sure, after years, the bet was a huge success, but I am sure the fans were shocked at his appointment. I think this could be an interesting video. Looking forward for it.
One of the only people on RUclips who i will watch a video from, start to finish, regardless of the subject matter.
Truly great work!
those random 90s pictures were sooooo distracting ngl but i appreciated all the models i guess
Alfie is a legend too now! :) Fantastic videos you make sir!
I can't be the only one dying cause of these random 1990 images 😭
Excellent research and anecdotes ! / small error @ at 20.31-Manuel Amoros / France : ``who went on to LOSE in the 1982 S/FINAL``; he missed his kick..)
Love the World Cup content. Keep it up!!
His post-WC reputation notwithstanding, El Hadji Diouf deserves some shout for that 2002 World Cup. (Or Papa Bouba Diop.) That Senegal team came out of nowhere!
2002 was the first World Cup I remember. Ahn Jung Hwan was worth a shout on here, sacked from Perugia for scoring the winner vs Italy, truly iconic and also a disgraceful match too. Also Michael Ballack was incredible for Germany at that World Cup and I would go as far to say it was Ronaldinho's big breakthrough.
Cheat 🤣
2002 was a hairy situation for FIFA.
I mean there are others...but that's the first WC I actively saw.
Great channel, and I DO remember Owen. Phenomenal striker....though prospective England's greatest ever player is really stretching it. He wasn't well rounded at all. He didn't adapt to losing his pace via the hamstring injuries whatsoever.
he was a good player but was also a one trick pony. great player when he was fit but i dont think he comes close to englands best
4:25 actually Pablo Dorado is credited for scoring the first goal in a final vs Argentina!!... The first world cup goal was for Lucien Laurent for France against Mexico...
2010 should've been either muller or ozil
Totally agree about Owen. He was a beast and if he stayed fit, he would be a legend.
Hes a legend..
Broo i remember watching the 2014 wc. I watched almost every game. And every time Colombia played I was hyped af. Everyone at school was talking about Rodriguez. Man those were some good times 😄
Yeah those were some fun times. Now James Rodriguez is nothing more than a simple has been that most people are slowly forgetting about.
"The greatest Haitian footballer of all time"
*pic of David Beckham*
Messi got gifted the 2014 world cup best player award. Di Maria was way better than him in the tournament.
Lmao, di Maria is usually the 2nd best player for Argentina and one of the most consistent ones but he was shit at the 2014 wc. He didn't even start every match and did nothing significant all tournament.
Not a chance you even watched the tournament with a clown statement like this
Better at what? Dude scored one single goal and from a Messi assist, of all people.
The random 90's pictures are amazing 😂😂
DAY 13: Hey Alfie, could you do a video on the life, career, controversies and tragedy of Justin Fashanu. It'd be your best video yet and it's a criminally underheard story. ❤️
i only watched cause i thought 2010 will be Muller and Gyan????
2014 World Cup should’ve been keylor navas he was amazing for Costa Rica that tournament
The 90’s pictures just crack me up 😂
2006 is Frank Ribéry, you were too young to remember Alfie! This guy was unknown outside of France... Messi hand already scored a hatrick in the classico
Ribery is a solid shout, but Messi hadn't scored a hat-trick in El Clásico before the 2006 World Cup, that was the following season.
Agreed
Domenech even said that Ribery was their secret weapon and oh boy when he begun to start, scorching defense with his flair and agility
Hagi or Brolin should’ve at least been mentioned when talking about 1994.
Hagi was already well known and a big name. He played for real from 1990-92
Watching the world cup on pirated streaming sites so that I can still watch it without unconsciously giving it credence and legitimacy by watching it on normal tv
Ahhh the Spice Girls, absolutely class at Italia 90, legends, reshaped the game
Franck Ribery deserves a shout for 2006, Messi showed his exploits at the 2005 Confederation Cup, good video though bro
Haha this video was hilarious, seeing Alfie using images of 1990s celebrities when he could not find images of old school footballers lol! I liked the part when he spoke of a footballer who went into Politics without success and he showed image of ''guess who'' in his office lol!, laughed so hard.
Otherwise good video Alfie, the World Cup tends to unleash superstars of the sport,it does not always happen often though, but when it happens football ends up winning.Kylian Mbappe had the biggest breakout impact of a World Cup tournament since Pele himself 60 years earlier.
Today Mbappe is by far the biggest name in the sport who continues to create headlines on and off the pitch while breaking records in the process.
Liked the blonde 1998 Romania photo reference. 👍
It’s going to be garnacho this World Cup
And Moukoku too actually
Originally, I thought he was just taking the piss when he said he would put random pics. I forgot about it, but then I was like “what is the posting a picture of 2Pac for?”🤣
Eusebio in 1966 shouldve got a Mention or He Shouldve made the List
Really, no mention for Keylor Navas in 2014? The man who carried CR to the quarter finals, then moved to the biggest Club in the world? You know, the same one James went? Not to mention, Keylor benched Casillas!! And, he was never sent on loan, unlike James.
Klose isnt bad.. but the world cup introduced us to Ronaldinho.. the smiling/laughing, the teeth, the free kick against england..
agreed!
Tbh I even more remember Ballack rather than Klose at 2002
Klose being top scorer was very impressive.
"The blondes came and the training went". Josimar had that dawg in him.
2006 Messi is such a fanboy pick (especially considering the ommision of Mbappe 2018). Fabio Grosso was the true breakout star of 2006.
Just thinking..if Pele was a 17 year old today, his skilled playing would have long since been put up on youtube....and the world would have known sooner...and he would have been snapped up by Real Madrid immediately.
It is kind of sad...the 1990 world cup in a way was the last 'traditional' world cup, where you knew nothing of the new guys from each country...before they came online and strutted their stuff. First the wide spread of cable tv, then the internet and youtube removed the element of surprise.
My grandfather used to say wonders about Perácio. On par with Leônidas, the old man would say. He could name the entire squad of 1938. And of course, he was certain that we were nicked by Italy in the semis.
"That w*p c***s"
"Then why did you let your daughter marry one?"
"Your father at the time was an amateur youth winger born in Brazil."
"Makes sense". Grandpa is long gone, but pop still have that hell of a left foot, even with some vertebrae damage.
Is every brazilian a baller? If we have the slightest interest about the game, yes. I was a decent goalie, but 3 fractures on the left arm (maybe 4, I guess my wrist is broken right now) made me switch positions with the same class and finesse of a legend from my hometown. No, not Kaká. The great Lúcio.
For Italia 90 in my opinion it's gotta be Salvatore Schillaci. Ok, he was 25 at that world cup but he was a late bloomer and he wasn't really well known before that world cup.
Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 406)
I will not give up until the video is made or Alfie himself tells me to stop. Everyone else telling me that will be ignored.
If you don't believe my number, just go back to the previous videos. I'm at the bottom most of the time, but I'm there.
He wont make these sort of country specific videos about anything but England, or maybe some more obscure nations. But why Germany?
@@klimaanlaqe I simply want to see it because I'm German myself and I'd like my country to be represented.
@@RyuzakiTaiyou bin ich selbst, aber es gab einfach nicht genug deutsche Premiet League Spieler
Denis Cheryshev has to be a mention for the 2018 WC, the way he lit up the stadiums by scoring bangers from the bench, turning him into a starter by the final group game as russia progressed to the KO stages was so fun to watch
On a similar note, Mario Fernandes was hugely impressive for Russia and consequently managed to attract interest from European clubs for his efforts.
@@maxkho00 shame as they lost to Croatia by pens
2006 WC was the tournament that Podolski announced himself to the world. Was voted "Young Player of the Tournament". Yet, Messi get's the pick? Are you drunk???
I love the 90s pictures😂

Your videos are really good dude. I actually appreciate your videos. The time is must take you. Big up man.
Miroslav Klose is one of the most underrated players in the history of football
Owen would be worth same as Mbappe same age. Owen was amazing when he broke through.

Josiimars goals in 1986! Wow!!
2002 should be Michael Ballack in my opinion if you're going to pick a German

Only 2 names come to mind when I think in 2010 WC... Mesut Ozil and Luis Suarez. Any name besides these two has no logical explanation. I´ve never heard about them and their perfomances were really impressive leading Germany and Uruguay to semi-finals.
Robben played better then both. Mesut ozil played like a goat in the pl but not best of wc
I would have given 2002 to Ronaldinho. He was 22 at the time and fresh into PSG, in a time when PSG or the french league were not that well known. Klose was 2 years older.
Who will be 2022 breakout though ?
Wonder who it will be this time.
It will be Nottingham Forest wonderkid Jesse Lingard
Ig maybe a Serb
Probably some Brazilian kid.
@@DeadlyV1RU5 nah, we all know who the Brazillian squad is, too much talent in that squad for unknowns to slip in

"one of the worst world wars" - one of the funniest phrases I've heard on this channel.
I would hazard a guess that the young ages in 1930 would be somewhat affected by the war that ended 12 years prior.
As for me, I think I prefer Michael Ballack as the greatest and biggest star player for the 2002 world Cup breakthrough!
He is also unknown before the world Cup. But before the 2002 tournament, he was very impressed and guide the club bayer leverkusen to the Champions League final and also being runners up in both bundesliga and German Cup competition. The champions league 2002 final was unexpected for the club as a huge underdog but leverkusen beat both favourites Liverpool and Man Utd to progress all the way to the final.
He then guide Germany to the world cup final and was Germany second topscorer with 3 goals including two goals in the quarter and semi final.
After the 2002, he has had a great career with both Bayern Munich and Chelsea before being ruled out in 2010 world cup due to injury.
Ballack was already known as a great player before the WC, the seasons at Bayer Leverkusen made him famous, in particular the 2001-2002 Champions League... on the opposite Klose become well known outside Germany only with the WC. So Klose is for sure a better pick!
a documentary on the afc Wimbledon on the nine promotions in eleven years, how they’re a fan own club and how they have a stadium in plough lane now.
The story of they lost the club, how the F A allowed that and won’t allow that anymore.
How they were very close to moving to ireland
How they went up the English football leagues.
It would be a good documentary video if you can do this. #thepeopleschannel

The random images are just to funny
funfact: The reason messi decided for Argentina is that the spanish national team had a big problem. They had many of the greatest player at every time but in the national team they failed and failed. this was over after 2008 but 2006 this image were shown perfect against french
You know if you can’t sign your name your not only illiterate, you are stupid. (You know because being illiterate is more of an ignorance thing. One was never taught to read. One could be illiterate and still be very smart.) How hard is it, even if you can’t read or write, to simply memorize the pattern of your name in print? You should be able to learn to sign your name in like a hour, even fully illiterate. Like I could learn to sign my name in Kanji or something really fast.
Probs! No person outside german speaking countries can pronounce Schweinsteiger as well as you. :D
Visually, this may be Alfie's greatest video.
Wtf Alfie, really?! Owen is sooo fkn overrated, yeah he was better than Mbappé, but never in his life was he the best player in the world nor would he ever be the best english player ever, especially when Bobby Moore is english too, and even Bobby Charlton, Moore is the best english player ever!
