Just an amazing voice, RIP Judith. Maurice Gibb wrote this with The Seekers in mind, but couldn't get it to them before the Bee Gees recorded it, so after Maurice passed The Seekers recorded it in tribute.

"(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts" is a song by the Bee Gees, written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and released in 1967. Robin Gibb sang lead vocals on this song and it would become one of his staple songs to perform during both Bee Gees concerts and his solo appearances.

The song was originally intended for The Seekers. Upon arriving in London from Australia (following in the path of the Seekers, who had arrived several years earlier) the Bee Gees had been unsuccessful in getting the song to the group, so they recorded it themselves. During a chance meeting in London between the Seekers' lead singer Judith Durham and Maurice Gibb, Durham learned that "Massachusetts" was originally intended for her group and in 2003 the Seekers recorded the song as a tribute to Maurice following his death earlier that year.
The Bee Gees had never actually been to Massachusetts when they recorded the song; they just liked the sound of the name as it was unusual, containing a lot of S's.

Not true. Massachusetts was written, recorded and released in 1967. The Seekers broke up in 68. Research the history behind this song on Wikipedia.
Read Judith Durham's book as well.
The Beatles wrote a song for Helen Shapiro, but the song was turned down on her behalf by her manager without ever informing her about it.
According to Judith Durham, this was not how it happened in their case.
The Bee Gees thought Tom Springfield had some sort of lock on writing songs for The Seekers, but they were mistaken. Paul Simon wrote a song for them and met them in person in England to tell them about it and to give it to them. Someday One Day is the name of the song and it is one of my absolute favorites performed by them.
Check it out on RUclips. Watch the version where they are at the Sydney Opera House while it is still under construction.

This song was written specifically for them to record in 1967, but the members of the group never found out. Their manager and/or an incompetent staff member turned down the offer. Good grief!

During a chance meeting in London between the Seekers' lead singer Judith Durham and Maurice Gibb, Durham learned that "Massachusetts" was originally intended for her group, and in 2003 the Seekers recorded the song as a tribute to Maurice following his death earlier that year.

This song was written in 1967 when the Bee Gees first came to the U.S. AND especially for the Seekers to perform and record, but the members of the band never knew about the offering until many years later. What a shame. This mega hit would have put the Seekers on the map in America and may have prevented the group from breaking up. Their four-year EMI contract was soon to end. They now had maximum leverage for a far more fair and far more lucrative contract.

She sings without a hint of her Aussie speaking voice, at least so far as I can tell What is remarkable is that she enunciates every syllable. Wonder if she ever tried singing in any other language, such as Latin.

Whenever Im down, I come back to You Tube and watch and listen to these great tunes; Massachusettes being one of them, just is amazing!
