On your comment about how 4 themes makes 6 encounters when paired, it works out because you don't care about order. That is Tooth + Goat is the same as Goat + Tooth.
You can get 6 encounters from just 3 themes if Tooth +Goat is different than Goat + Tooth.
Other encounter tables you can make with the same method but more themes to start:
    d10. Start with 5 themes
    2d8. start with 6 themes
d20 table. start with 6 themes and choose 3 of them at a time.
You could also make a d20 list of all the ways 3 encounters interact together, this is really good for motivations.
for example from the maze theme, 1+2+3 gives: "the Magmin maps lead to the mouth in the floor. They are in league with the Goat Minotaur who lives in the maze. he eats the people who fall in the hole"
This is a really cool system.

This material alone has done wonders to help me break through the writer's block. Extremely simple, but extremely cool techniques. Thanks a lot!

Great video! I have a tendency to overthink my own prep, and these guidelines are a fantastic way to boil things down to exactly what i need.

Love the tips and really like how much of it can easily be ported into say the Deep Country ... Oh my, what if Bastion had its genesis in the "knightly" epoch, its name would certainly suggest that!

This is a great video, thank you, very interesting insight into how you generate encounters. Also, good advice re: Anne's blog, more people should be reading it!
You never got round to explaining why you went for "maze" over "labyrinth" but I'm such a tedious nerd I was already writing out the below in anticipation (please imagine any response is the "AKSUALLY" meme guy, which is based on my actual face, so that's ok).
I'm guessing that you were going to say a maze denotes a branching route (multicursal) whereas a labyrinth has one path leading towards a centre (unicursal). This is not incorrect, but I wanted to note that the distinction between mazes (multicursal) and labyrinths (unicursal) is a feature of contemporary English not traditional, with both terms originally being synonymous: "maze" is derived from Old English (amasian=confound) whereas "labyrinth" is Greek in origin (unsurprisingly). There are also exceptions: the labyrinth of the Jim Henson and the labyrinth of legend are both multicursal (there wouldn't be much point in Ariadne providing a thread to Theseus if there was only one path). Conversely, the 2 surviving miz-mazes are both unicursal "labyrinths" yet have "maze" in their name.
    Which is amazing.
I use the terms interchangeably and encourage others to do the same, mainly because a) "labyrinth" is a cool word (see username) and b) unicursal labyrinths are super boring looooong corridors.

Interesting stuff! Much more interesting than my reasoning at the time, which is that I personally feel "maze" is a little more of a broad stroke, a less specific term, giving me greater freedom when combining it with the other elements.
Of course I then went on to have the very first instance of "maze" conjure up a minotaur, so I'm not sure that additional freedom did any good in this case!

Hey there, just leaving this message here since it's the easiest way of contacting you. I really love Into the Odd, it is such good game condensed into such a slim form. While glad to see that your campaign for the remaster is going well, I'm wondering if it would be possible to still leave the free version of the original into the odd available for download on your website? It's what has gotten me into the game in the first place and sharing it with new players was the easiest way to get them interest into it as well. And besides that, it would be nice simply for "historical" reasons.

Hi, glad you've found the free version of ITO useful.
There's a free version of the ITO Remaster here: drive.google.com/file/d/10IxHS6UY6JdD_EyA2gVhlMBSgL8MKg_A/view
Think it has largely the same content as the old one, and definitely has enough to roll your characters and get started with the game.

@@Bastionland Oh, thank you very much, I truly appreciate that. I was actually about to start a campaign with some new players, so getting to do that with the Remaster rules is really great.
Love most of the small additions and clarifications to the rules and the expanded Arcana list is amazing. The only part that feels a bit off is the Bulky rule, and even that is mostly because of how it interacts with the "dual wield" weapons, something that can be easily houseruled if a character transports multiple of them. One nitpick I do have is that I'm surprised that the section about combat still doesn't explain the other uses of Moving (taking a minor action, switching weapons). I assume that will be under Turn Length like in the original version but I just always found it odd that it is there, not in the player section.
But really, I'm just even more excited for the new campaign now.
Lastly, I'd like to ask for advice about two rulings, if that's alright:
If always ruled characters in melee combat like this. They can use their movement to retreat from melee but they have to succeed a DEX save to do so, else they are stuck in melee for that round (they can try again next round). They can still use their action to attack, though ranged weapons can't be used in melee so they are stuck with d4 unarmed damage if they have one equipped (assuming they have used their Movement for a failed flee attempt, so they can't use it to switch weapons).
      Does that sound reasonable?
Is there a rough estimate at what characters can expect to sell Arcanas? Greater and Legendary are pretty much priceless but I'm wondering if something like the ones in the d20 list from the old version or the d66 list from the new one would go at about 10G or more like 100G. (I have a hard time estimating and deciding on a price value for something like this)
Thank you very much in advance. And sorry if either topic was already expanded upon on the blog. I haven't read nearly as much of it as I want to.
