I was one of the animators that participated (yes, I saw the red flags and ignored them. Forgive me, I was dumb and broke at the time) and I entered my animation in the contest. Ever since then, dead silence. I tried checking the website, and the page they had the contest on was removed and led to a dead link. I wanted to upload the animation to RUclips but I was scared TNT would copyright strike me. I'm very glad people didn't forget about this.

I say go ahead and upload it. Shaq can’t go after you without exposing himself. If he tries to sue you, it’d very likely it cos backfire cause what he did is legally questionable, with him not giving anyone a prize and all

For a still image that might have been an alright prize but an animation is like making thousands of drawings and syncing them in time.

I've seen art contests, held by people with a fraction of the net worth of Shaq/TNT, with prizes nearly twice that big. For _one_ piece of art, not 30 whole seconds of animation.

This reminds of the times when Deviantart wasn't the meme that it is today and a lot of people would send notes to me demanding free art work. The thing that made me angry was the fact they demanded free art. If they asked nicely, I sometimes would consider it. Art takes time, just like animation. Background, foreground. Where is the setting of the picture? What poses are you going for? Will it be futuristic or medieval? All art takes time and time is money
and they still do it. I still log in every now and then, and a couple times in the year I get people "working on a game". I remember someone even said "don't be selfish and share your art" or something weird like that. Lots of scam accounts too. I learned once when I was younger, never again lol
As someone who is still on that website, I still get those notes from random people asking me for free art. It's a little more rare to come by now since so many people have left the website, but when I do get them, they usually want me to draw something that I am not comfortable with. I block them immediately.

I once got a note from someone there that requested I make them 17 different artworks that all involve Sonic the Hedgehog sleeping with his feet out, just because I said I was taking requests. I don't open requests now.
I feel really sorry for the animators (who actually wanted to reanimate a clip for “Shaqtoons”), and Saltydkdan. They didn’t lose any money, but they sure lost time and Shaq didn’t even apologize for making the animators do free work (and Salty did the best he could).
Shaq showed absolutely no remorse for his actions; in fact, he was proud he managed to fool some suckers into doing a job he was too lazy to do.
Kids today don't even know he was an NBA Player. They just know him from the commercials.

He didn't start rapping until he was in the NBA. Shaq was a terrible rapper and would never have been able to release an album if he weren't already famous from basketball.
This is why I am so scared to get my foot out the door when it comes to doing animation as a job. There are so many people out there that want to do animated shows, but have no idea how time consuming animation is. I feel so bad for all the animators who joined Shaq's project and got absolutely nothing in return.

If it's any consolation, there's people out here that understand how hard that job is and won't screw you over, just gotta be careful who you do business with and know your value, never take a job offer below minimum wage. I'm just an artist myself who wants to make a comic but lack both the skills to do it myself and the funds to pay someone else rn and ik people asking for free work is a big problem and it can be scary to get started but it's definitely doable, hopefully such scams won't scare ya off if it's your passion or ruin that passion for ya
I remember back when you hosted your Joshua and the Promise Lands Reanimated, and someone on twitter was complaining about you "mooching off of free work"? Even though you were completely transparent about it and thats just how reanimated projects work (considering 9/10 the source is copyrighted so you cant get away with direct profit)?
People need to understand that there is a difference between a creator online going "Hey this is a fun fan project, you should totally join us to do a 1-5 second part and make friends" and a major company going "Hey we want you to do free labor for us to animate 1-5 minutes of audio and MAYBE you'll get paid half of rent for it, if we bother to use it at all". Sometimes you do have to do free/cheap work to put yourself out there, but there should still be some personal boundaries on what kind of free work you take on, especially something as time consuming as animation.
if it’s a fan project, it’s a hobby. if it’s a corporate request, you should expect to be paid for it, because they’re making WAY more money off your work than adsense.
I was just thinking of people who do fan animation for the game grumps. There was an long piece based on audio from 3d world runner. This is a fan project. And I think things like that gets better exposure than anything like this Shaq thing does. Fans do it for free unless it's like with markiplier where of those fans became his editor. And I'm sure he pays lixiaom well. What Shaq and tnt was shameful and lazy.

There was a similar story with the author of the book "Metro 2033". I remember it was before the pandemic that he announced a new book of his and that he is lancing a contest to find an illustrator. Same story - "You guys do a free labor and illustrate me a book, and then I ll pick one and pay him/her a sad amount of money." Local artists didn't like that as well, and everyone joined in and submitted their "mock-art. " I remember I submitted the tf2 pyro drawn in the paint program :)

В общем смогла найти свой рисунок с хештегом vktalents_metro2033, так назывался тот конкурс. Но хештеги теперь вк не работают, так что если и найдётся что-либо, то только по ключевым словам.

I’mma be honest here. If I had a bunch of money and I wanted to get people to animate for me, I would absolutely make sure to pay them for their time!!! Hell, it would actually be pretty cool to pay someone to animate in my style in their own unique way(mainly because I’m too lazy to actually animate myself), and they would not only get credit but also get paid!!! Animators are worth more than people give them credit for!!!!

Something similar to what Shaq is doing happened to me once on LinkedIn not to long ago. The problem with being a 3D Artist is that it often costs a lot money to use the software that you need to actually create your art and animations. I'm in a relatively stable financial situation for now, but a lot of other people out their aren't as lucky as me. Not cool Shaq! 🤔

He did advertised it as a contest but nowadays even for fun completely free no profit projects, it's pretty hard to get volunteers. I don't mind paying but I just can't right now.
Artists deserve to be paid for their work. U can give them the expose on top of paying them. I will never understand why some people think it's okay to try to get art or any other form of work for free. Even with my artists' friends, I will commission them & pay them because I like their art & want to support them. The only time I could see the expose thing is like with a project that Saber is working on. We're it's for non-profit & either the money is going to charity or it's just an event for artists to show off their work on like a live stream. I'd still ask the artist if they're okay with it first, but otherwise, pay artists & people who do work for u

Shaq from what I hear is a REALLY nice guy. My guess is that Shaq is not aware of the animation landscape like us and would have likely paid more had he known. This was most likely TNT's fault. It IS something a corporation would do.

I will say, this just reminds me of Hasbro convincing fans of MLP to submit their characters for a chance to have them become canon background characters. But when winners were chosen, the winners lost the rights to their own characters and were told they couldn't claim it as their own characters anymore because Hasbro had it in fine print that once you won, your character was theirs permanently, and you didn't even get as much money as an actual character design artist or concept artist would make for creating a character, nor any royalties. Oh, and this was for G5 specifically as well.

Ya know.. I grew up poor. When I was on deviant art like 15 years ago, I held an art contest once. Everyone who participated was like 15 years old or younger. Young aspiring artists with passion.
I was dirt poor.
First place got a 1 year DA membership + 500 DA coins
Second place got a 1 year DA membership
Third place got a 6 month membership
And then as a surprise I gave everyone who participated a 3 month membership I believe.
Not the best prizes but it was what I could afford. And they were all super happy. They entered knowing 1-3rd place prizes.
I could never imagine throwing a contest and then just NOT giving out the awards. This is so gross. He has money!

The fucking laziness of it all, Shaq couldn't even fucking pretend to emote reading the script, the animators had to carry the load and overanimate his expressions in order to compensate for his drab don't-give-a-fuckness delivery.

The prize money suddenly jumped from $500 to $10,000? Miss Crawly’s glass eye must’ve bounced on the keyboard a few times. (Sorry, I finally saw the movie for the first time.)
I'm surprised that not many people have talked about the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon animation contest, because in my opinion it's a worse example. The grand prize for that contest was 100,000 british pounds (or $126k in USD), and 10k for each individual song, which is certainly a step-up from Shaq's contest, but the catch is that you have to animate a full music video for one (or more if you so choose) of the ten songs from DSotM. At worst, you were being asked to do multiple minutes of animation just for a chance to win $126k (and even more if you decided to animate more than one song). Again, it's a considerably larger payout, but it's still not worth the effort if you're not even guaranteed the money. And much like the Shaq contest, anything you submit becomes the property of Pink Floyd and you're not allowed to use it anywhere, regardless of if you win or not.
And to add some irony to the mix, considering DSotM is famous for its animated music videos, the contest allowed the use of AI generation. Granted, AI images and generative content were still fairly archaic when the contest was first announced, but that's still an added insult to injury that you could put hours of work into a well animated MV and potentially get beaten out by something made with a fraction of the time and effort.
