    The Friedman Runt-20 1x12" 20-watt combo delivers Friedman's legendary tone and versatility in a compact 2-channel amp. The Runts power section is driven by two EL-84s, with three 12AX7s in the preamp. The simple clean channel features a volume knob and 3-position bright switch that delivers anything from pristine cleans to a slightly broken-up blues/country tone.
    The heart and soul of the Runt is the overdrive channel, which gives that legendary Friedman overdrive that ranges from vintage rock crunch to modern high gain tones.. Use the Boost switch and Gain knob to dial in the perfect amount of overdrive. A global presence control shapes the high-frequency response of the Runts power section.
    The Runt delivers the tight bottom end and midrange that is typically only found in much higher-wattage amps by utilizing custom transformers and the cleanest signal path possible. The Runt-20 is ideal for many styles of music from blues to classic rock and heavy metal by merely adjusting the gain and master controls.
    When plugging into the Runt, you will instantly notice the harmonically rich detailed chords and resonating single note lines. This amp cleans up exceptionally well with the guitar’s volume knob, even with the amp on higher gain settings.
    Speaker Emulated Direct Interface:
    This is the first amp Dave Friedman has ever made with an internal load and cab-simulated XLR output. Comparing this analog circuit to some of the most intricate computer-based IRs, Dave achieved a direct output you can proudly send to front of house or use in the studio. The Runt also allows you to play "silently," meaning you can safely play the amp WITHOUT having a speaker cabinet connected. The XLR output includes a ground-lift, level, and center/edge of speaker cone simulation switches.
    At the heart of the Runt combo is a 16-ohm, 12” Celestion G12M 65 Creamback speaker that delivers the bass, mid response, and signature sound you would expect from a Friedman amp.
    The Runt was also specifically designed to take pedals well, and it loves boosts, ODs, phasers, flangers, tremolos, and wahs. The ultra-transparent no tone loss buffered, series effects loop takes time-based effects pedals and rack units equally well. This is the exact same FX loop Friedman uses on all its amplifiers including the legendary BE-100. The head cabinet features beautiful black Tolex, with Baltic Birch construction, and is built to withstand the rigors of the road.

    If you need a grab and go amp for small gigs this amp is very good. It's loud, light and has great tone. I finally ditched my Fender HRD after 25 years . This thing kills it. Spend the extra cash and get it. I have the combo.

    It seems like a drag getting to that bottom panel. You sort of have to flip the amp onto it's face to get a look at anything, unless you memorize where everything is by feel.

  • @guitardave
    @guitardave 6 лет назад +4

    The eq section only affects the gain channel. The only way to alter the tone of the clean channel is the bright switch, and of course the presence control.

      @@frankswildyear I love it. The only gripe I have is the placement of the knobs. For the life of me I can't understand why they're set up so you have to either stand behind the amp to read the knobs or stand in front of the amp (like most people do) and read the knobs upside down.

    Very good video. It's nice to hear the comparison between the mic and the D.I. with the clean tone but its probably more critical to hear the two compared with a dirty tone. This is usually what separates the good D.I. from the bad as this is usually more revealing with regard to 'fizz, tinniness, etc.' I just bought this amp as a head unit and I will say that it is a keeper. I have owned them all and it took me 40 years to get here. This is a wonderful amp in every way and it is actually much loader than you would think. I have to use an attenuation for home studio when using speaker(s) but with the D.I. through my DAW and sound system this is of course no longer an issue, and it still sound great! That said, we all want to use a speaker cab too so be aware that this little runt is still a beast and it is hard to get the Master volume up enough to get this amp cooking and not be too loud for others. Yet, some people have real problems so is no biggie.

    Why does every review of this amp have the master at 2? Everyone knows how the preamp sounds, lets hear those power tubes dammit.

    • @8sigreg
      @8sigreg 5 лет назад +4

      Exactly! It seems so few people understand that it's the power tubes that give a tube amp its desirable sound. A distorting preamp sounds like a distortion pedal. A distorting power amp tube sounds smooth and slightly compressed. This is a great candidate for a manageable volume on stage with the master wide open.

    Why do the knobs face the rear? Who stands behind an amp to dial in the knobs? You should be able read the knobs from the front of the amp without reading upside down. I like the sounds I get from this amp but I hate the placement of the knobs. My VOX has knobs in the same place as the Friedman but at least they're meant to be read while standing in front of the amp and not behind it.

    • @Po1itica11yNcorrect
      @Po1itica11yNcorrect Год назад

      @@j.f.6465 Yes. My issue is my music room isn't big. Just a standard 12'x10' bedroom converted to a music studio. So I have no floor space and my AC15C1 sits against the wall. Same with my Friedman Runt-20 Combo. Standing in front of the amps and adjusting the knobs require reading them upside down.
      On the other hand, I have an old kid's armour that has a place for a television. I put my Deluxe Reverb Tonemaster in there and the knobs are right there on the front and easily readable and adjustable. Same with my Mesa Boogie Cali Tweed, which sits on top of the armour above the DR. Knobs in front, easily readable and adjustable. If someone is standing and playing in front of an amp (which is where most people play), they should be able to read the knobs from that position. Not have to walk behind the amp to read them.

    • @ConstantineJajas
      @ConstantineJajas 6 лет назад +1

      If you like single channel amps without a big a mount of headroom go for the Pink Taco or the Shirley. You choice will be affected by the type of Gain you want to achieve and will also depend on whether you need cleans (PT can't do cleans). If you want an amp that can do it all but with a bit less character go with the Runt. It has a great gain channel and the cleans are great.

      joesl8 you get what you pay for with amps in my experience. You can play a cheap (or expensive) guitar through a cheap amp and it will sound cheap but a cheap (or expensive) guitar through an expensive amp will, in most cases depending on your taste, sound great. That’s my personal thought at least.
