It was WISE that you resisted the temptation to pet or hand-feed them. Definitely improved their likelihood of survival in the wild. When I've helped orphaned squirrels in the past, I wondered if they recognized me by sight, scent, or my voice. But they could definitely differentiate me from other humans.

    • @orangebeagle3068

Was it wise? When I volunteered at a wildlife animal shelter, we would bottle feed the baby squirrels until they hit a certain age where they naturally got wary of us and started to hiss at us. I don’t know if this was because we didn’t spend a lot of time with them outside of feeding though.

In florida we have netting around our patios and near that patio was a tree and once a mom squirrel got stuck in there so we kept leaving out food for her and when she got free she would come back often. Then she suddenly stopped and we thought she got bored or something. A month later she comes back with two babies!!! After a while the mom either died or stopped coming but her babies recognized all 10 of my family members and would never be scared of us!! I'd play with the neighborhood kids in my backyard and when I would see them they would watch me play with the other kids and when the kids would leave the bbabies would come and chill with me on the grass next to their tree :) it was awesome

There's a Red Squirrel sanctuary reserve in Formby, Lancashire ( near Liverpool ) with pathways through it so you can wander around, watch them and feed them with the nuts you can buy at the entrance. @@blucat4 sorry but animals are not humans but humans are part of the animal kingdom. "animal" is a very large category. you flipped your words wrong. I know magpies/crows can recognize human faces as they are smart as a 7-year-old. they're on a whole different category with dolphins and chimpanzees then a lil chipmunk that I was talking about. not a magpie. not an orca, not a gorilla that can do sign language. a chipmunk. did I say chipmunks are dumb? no. they perceive things differently, and I found it fascinating. all animals have different levels of intelligence. see, you're the only one who couldn't comprehend what I meant. and I did know the point of your sarcasm and it was not needed. you weren't trying to talk like a normal person, having a civilized conversation as to why I was wrong in some way. you just wanted to belittle a stranger for the fun of it. get your facts straight. you weren't trying to make a statement "in a nice way. 🙂"

In the UK our native red squirrels have almost been wiped out by the American grey squirrel. I'm fortunate enough to live on a large island called Anglesey in north Wales, where red squirrels thrive.
If you ever visit the UK, visit the Red Squirrel Woodlands of Anglesey 👍

I can relate 100%. I feed the squirrels in my backyard twice a day. Before I eat breakfast and right after I get home from work. Those little critters make me laugh every day. They are happy to see me and I am happy to see them. They come when they hear the door open or hear my voice. Those squirrels are the best part about living in this city.

Thank you for sharing your valuable observations. Your hands off approach allowed the wild to stay wild. I live in a wilderness area and it drives me crazy and saddens me when I see friends and neighbors hand feeding because they think it's cute! So many humans don't think smart before they do things which ultimately causes death to wild creatures. Please share more and the very best of luck un your career.

The way that you act toward the squirrels shows a real respect and reverence for their wildness and Way of life. And the way you adorned the mother with the lovely flowers shows you appreciate the sacredness of all of gods creatures. You know that they are not here for our amusement but that if we are both respectful and lucky we can earn their trust and they will show themselves to us. You are like an earth mother.
