    Have to say, I'm quickly finding your videos to be my "don't miss" choice. I watch a LOT of permaculture and farm people for my own continuing education and you tend to be the most informative/best refresher based in science.

    At 9:14 "cutting this is going to be a little difficult" - helpful tip when you need to take off such a large piece and you don't want to risk damaging the main trunk - Take the branch off in a couple of sections, say first the top third, then the next third. The remaining section should be something you can manage with one hand easily, so you can prevent it from trying to tear away from the main trunk. When you take the whole branch at once, it can easily get away from you and tear the main trunk.

    One thing I’ve learned to implement is to have a plan for your biomass/mulch placement, it’s easy to chop and drop your mulch in place but can be better utilized in certain areas. For example I think ahead of what I’m trying to get to produce in the oncoming months , this is important for me since I’m working with a suburban yard.

    Hi, again, SGB! This kung fu style 'chop and drop' seems to be the bee's knees to fertilizing. Thanks for sharing it.
    Permaculture Q&A: I found out that the Kentucky Coffee Tree is a nitrogen fixer and 12 years ago I took down 7 old trees due to their constant limbs breaking, snapping and littering the property.
    I know their roots are everywhere within my soil as they try to grow new trees like weeds.
    Would i still need to plant a nitrogen fixer between my apple and plum trees if i am planting them near a KCT root?
    Thanks again for all of the knowledge you share.
    God bless.
    Wu Tang out.

    I’d love to know what species yall all use for Chop and drop? I use Tithonia diversifolia, purple Napier grass, and pigeon pea as my primary mulching material, I also use lemon grass heavily.

    #PERMACULTUREQ&A:
    Hey William. Thanks again for all this great content bro!
    We've got a bunch of grass that we planted for some pasture area; Ryegrass and Kentucky 31 Fescue.
    Some weeds are coming up, mostly concerned of some areas where the grass isn't really taking off and there's some weeds taking advantage.
    Would it be helpful to apply lime and / or minerals - just once, to help the grass get going??

    Permaculture Q&A chop and drop. When would I chop & drop in a cool semi-arid desert climate. In total annually 5.14 (in.) rain & 6.5 (in.) snow.
    Mid Feb is when we get about 1 inch of rain otherwise scattered showers. Thank you in advance

      If you get snow, then I would do it right after the trees go dormant. Your organisms are going to be doing the most work when your snow is on the ground and melting. The fastest decomposition, ever recorded, is under snow melt. Great question!

    Permaculture Q&A: Hi! 4 years ago, I planted my fruit trees 3' apart with berry bushes in between. Will this be a problem as they keep growing? If so, how can i fix it or help it now before its too late? This is the first year Im seeing blossoms. Thank you!

      If they shade out the bushes too much (depending on what kind of bush and how much sun they want) then it can hurt your yield. What kind of tree and bush?

    Thanks for all the knowledge you’re putting out!

    #Permaculture Q&A What steps could one take in a wind prone arid environment to keep chop and drop in place once it dries up. The only mulch I have successfully been able to keep in place is wood chips. I do a lot of composting with my chop and drop items in a pallet enclosure first, then add to mulch ring, with chips on top to keep in place. More work but seems to work, I AM building soil on top of the sand.

    #Q&A How tall would you allow your clover to grow to be still beneficial as a cover crop? Mine is now around 18", and I wonder if I should chop and drop it. It is just starting to push crimson flowers. It's beautiful!

    • @ThePermacultureConsultant
      @ThePermacultureConsultant  3 месяца назад

      It depends on if it's shading out your other plants. Keep an eye out, I'm about to address this very thing in an upcoming video. Thank you!

    Would it be beneficial to chip the branches?

    • @peterellis4262
      @peterellis4262 3 месяца назад

      It's not necessary. If you happen to have a chipper, then you might want to make some woodchips to use for things like walkways? But in terms of the chop and drop function, part of its benefit is the fairly slow release of nutrients from the larger pieces.

    5:46 it’s a Swiss bush scythe. An awesome tool to clear brush, strip logs of small branches, take down small trees (use it like an axe) and even can be used for digging small holes in the earth. One of the best tools to own.

      Also known as a billhook. I can't say I've ever heard of a Swiss bush scythe, but the tool William is using is a basic billhook. Pretty much every region of England has their own local variants.

      Sepp Holzer introduced it to the US. I believe he is the inventor of it. It's a concoction made by cooking/burning bone and some other things that you paint on tree trunks to keep herbivores away.
