    A lot of you tubers say to layer carbon and nitrogen in your compost. Doesn’t mixing do more than layering. One of the biggest differences I notice.

    Thanks very much! I have been making hot compost for about three years. I have a word of warning for those to whom this might apply. Though I did not know what they were, a friend helping in the garden showed me that I have an infestation of Asian Jumping Worms. There is a lot on the web about identifying them. Not so much about coping. I discovered these worms will invade a pile of compost as soon as it starts cooling down. They are unbelievably successful, lots of worms, and I have noticed degrade in the soil of some of my garden beds. Not much advice out there but I decided to make new compost bins and place them on a 5.5" thick platform of limestone chat. I hope the worms won't get through that. I plan to heat up my piles until the worms and their cocoons are killed. And in the future to store compost where they can't get to it. I hope no one else gets this problem, but once you have these worms there may be no way to entirely rid yourself of them. But the last thing I wanted to do was feed them my best compost and then spread the well fed worms throughout my garden. Please read about these worms if you are not aware of them. They are spreading across the nation. Thanks again for the video!

    Hey SGB. Thanks for taking my Q&A. Your advice is a help. I'm in the eastern panhandle of WV and the mountains here are full of various species. 12 summers ago i had to bring down 5 HUGE Kentucky Coffee Trees. Looked alot like Chinese Elm according to the locals. A forrester came to help fell the trees and identify them. Junk trees. Branches would snap in a little bit of wind. The smallest was 78 feet tall and 34" diameter. Under 40 years of growth. The biggest was 112 feet tall, 47" diameter, 60+ years old. The canopy to one side was over my 25 foot garage and another 15 feet over the house. Got 37 cords of firewood out of it all. The kicker to it all is all 5 trees were all on a shared root system. About a foot below the surface. New trees have popped up off of those roots. So more growth to remove. Another tree that has started growing here is the Tree of Heaven. Spotted Lantern Fly love laying eggs on them. Time to burn the property down. LOL. Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge. God bless you, the wife and your daughter. I might be able to use the book ... as a hammer. 😂 Wu Tang out.

    Environmental Science Student it's not "ether," its electro-magnatism. The ground has a negative charge (typically) and the atmosphere has a positive charge. The copper wire may be acting as a conduit. Alternatively, the earth's magnetic field may be causing a minor magnestic effect. Both would result in the same thing. Different charges on either side of the copper wire. This could benefit the plants by attracting nutrients to the area. As all nutrients have a charge to them. Otherwise the plant may be sensetive to electro-magnatism. I once had bunch of seeds (inside) that didn't sprout until a big thunderstorm. However to be honest, I really don't think a wire that small could do anything. You'd be better off getting a very small current at each end of the plot that alternates on a weekly basis. This would force the nutrients to flow past the root zone so the could collect more nutrients.

    I liked the nematodes question. I to have a huge amount of ants in my whole yard. I like in suburbia and have replaced my backyard with garden beds, chickens, and all the grass. the areas that had grass now have a ton of wood chips/mulch as the top layer. I think one of the sources of my mulch/woodchips were contaminated by ant colonies because I have an unbelievable amount of ants. I have tried the borax solution but you have to get them to go into the solution to eat it. I don't want to use any kind of poison on my yard since ultimately, the dirt will go into my garden beds. What would you recommend for ant control? #permacultureQ&A

    @kennethsword (Wu Tang) I took a plant ID course at the local jr college. Our instructor used native plants as well as plants that grew well in our environment. Additionally, you meet people that will create a network of likeminded individuals that is beneficial on many levels. Just an idea 😊 P.S. the college library usually keeps copies of the books used for library use only (free- my favorite word) and usually have photocopiers or (use your phone) and- you might get a line on used books or older editions for cheap through bulletin boards, classmates, instructors, etc.

    I had to gather leaves from every species of tree in my area as an FFA project years ago. I think I collected over 70 types but it may have been over 40. A head injury deleted most of what I learned including my ability to play piano. Gardening with a brain injury is a true adventure. Some days I feel great and others are like being in the twilight zone. My lot was bulldozed down to hard red dirt with large chunks of gravel. To make a hole for a fruit tree (to anchor the roots) requires a pick axe. Then I have to haul in forest dirt and debris to build a mound of actual soil under the canopy as the trees grow. But by God I have a bunch of fruit now and an ever expanding garden with rich black soil and I`ve started creating a 2nd garden/orchard area in a dead zone where grass struggles to grow. In 2 years my main garden now has a few areas where carrots and potatoes can grow. I keep it covered with organic forest mulch and grass clippings and compost all my plant stems and waste and leave the roots in the soil. In a really dead area where grass struggles to grow I start by putting a layer of crumbled rotting wood, leaf mold, green grass clippings and a handful of rich compost in a cardboard box then I fill the box with silty soil and leaf mold from a nearby wash in the woods. I just keep adding boxes using a garden wagon to haul the dirt and forest debris. Eventually this dead area will be a nice garden. I`ve made a line 2 boxes wide so far in front of 3 fig trees I put there with logs as their surrounding border. The tree mounds grow Red Ripper Peas in summer and various cool weather greens in fall/winter in Louisiana zone 8a/8b line...or 8b/9a...not sure...they keep changing it. The mounds are layers of cardboard, green grass clippings, pine straw, soil, leaf mold, chopped weeds, rotting branches etc.

    First off, Don’t tell people to move to Tennessee to homestead😂 We’re full, got too many Californians moving to “Nashville”, and housing and land prices have skyrocketed even out in the sticks. Why they keep putting neighborhoods 20 minutes from town and ruin the countryside is beyond me, but that’s how it is. Additionally, like you said, stay strapped😂

    I used Florida Weave this year on a long row of San Marzano Tomatoes.. The plants got so heavy by harvest time, it just failed. They would fall over, lean, or just kinda fold in on themselves.. I used steel t-posts every 3 or 4 plants and had run 7 or 8 strands of line., I won’t use it again for heavy bearing plants. I’m also in tornado alley, Eastern ARKANSAS. My town for obliterated about 3 years ago.. School, church’s, and hundreds of homes..

    Hello 👋 William, I have been hearing about a plant identification app within google that is a camera icon and I have found it useful also. I didn’t realize that you did barter for your services. I’m raising Kunekune piggys and I love barter rather than paper or electronic methods. I moved to Tennessee a little over two years ago and have to relearn a lot of things. We moved here from northwest Oregon and it’s very different here. Anyway we are a family of two and don’t need seven to nine pigs at processing size. I would be interested in some kind of barter to help an old school farmer catch up on a lot more natural way of doing things. The closer I get to nature the farther away from idiots I get. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge

    I live in a 7a zone high desert in NV. After 10 yrs of trial and error. What I have found is creating shade makes a world of difference. When I transplant anything I cover for shade to give it a chance to establish roots. I have employed many different items, my favorite is a milk crate if the plant is small enough OR I will hammer in T-posts, string a section of fencing and add shade cloth/privacy cloth. And I use wood chips to help hold down mulching like leaves or straw. Another thing I find helps is growing lots of watermelon, cantaloupe, squash etc all around to cover the ground and keep the roots of trees or bushes cooler in the summer. All the extra produce created goes to the chickens, they LOVE it! Hope that helps those trying to get started in a desert environment.

    #Q&A Hi William, Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us as you work on your projects and you share the good, bad, and the ugly. I have learned a lot and applied the knowledge to my garden this year. The Lord has blessed and it has been the best garden ever. We have a 20x7x6 foot hoop house. Would it be beneficial to grow a cover crop in it? What would you recommend? Is wood sorrel (aka mini-pickle plant)an ok plant to let abound in the garden? It is having a blast this year since I am letting grow and then chop & drop it. I am letting my white and purple clover grow for chop & drop when it gets too tall. Should I get red clover? If I chop & drop dandelion leaves will that bring calcium to the garden plants when the leaves decompose? My worst enemy is Bermuda grass, any suggestions? Thank you for all your help. Clarissa

    Your pigs are looking fabulous! Just to be clear...Kune kune pigs are easy! Feeder pigs, not as much. To the person in AZ, don't plant in raised beds either. They dry out WAY too fast in the heat and wind. You're better off planting in shallow trenches to hold in whatever moisture you can. I also like using drip irrigation to get the water only on the plants I want and not evaporating before it can get to the ground via overhead watering.

    • @1millionpumpkins542
      @1millionpumpkins542 5 дней назад

      I agree about planting in trenches. I'm in NE Arizona, 6100 ft, zone 6 b. Basins and trenches and loads of mulch are working well here 2.5 years so far. We have sheep and rabbits who provide deep mulch and cold manure. The trenches are very easy to create and maintain. I make them a mattock head wide, with 30" wide living pathways, all heavily mulched. One day I will afford automated watering systems, but for now, the hose directed into the trenches works a treat! Cheers and blessings ❤
