I love the part at 4:22 where Petrucci plays the part, Jordan repeats it on keyboard, then John Myung repeats it on bass.
OH MY GOD YEEES THAT PART!!!
Oh god yes
+TheBushwooky John plays the part on guitar, Jordan repeats it on keyboard, then John repeats it on bass :D
+nenissaK That's a quick change, if anyone gets it
imagine with labrie too
Excellent lyrics by John Myung.
Great vocals by James Labrie too
+Justin Nellett Myung wrote lyrics for several songs (and btw he writes beatiful lyrics)
I can't tell if that was a joke or not.....
If it is not a joke, then yeah, for other songs I *totally* agree.
If it is a joke, I see what you did there *_wink wink_* #TheSilentMan *_wink wink_*
+Justin Nellett TOP FUCKING KEK
OH BECAUSE HE WROTE THE SILENT MAN!! Pff took me like two years to get it.
3:37 Guitar solo is beautiful. Love this track!
No-one is better at interpreting Myung's lyrics than LaBrie.
Best progressive metal band in the world...
4:59 dat Mike Mangini doe...I know this argument will go on forever, but let's just face it - MM is a MACHINE!!!
I was thinking the same thing. Both MP and MM are great drummers, but MM is just tighter and more technically proficient. I love MP though, listening to Liquid Tension Experiment now...
David Tangman I love LQE - I always thought that it was basically just a mental dumping grounds for the DT when James was out of the office, so to speak...Acid Rain? :)
Nate Chatigny Yes, LQE is less structured and more improvisational... The guys feel pretty boxed in having to play the same stuff over and over. These side projects keep the juices flowing and plus you get to play with legends like Tony Levin!
well...machine is also a kind of style😁
Arriving home after the Dream Theater's concert at Mexico City. HOLY FREAKIN' GOOD SHOW!!!!!!!! THANK YOU DREAM THEATER.
This is a FANTASTIC song!! I love it.
am i the only one that thinks that this album is just as good as the other Dream Theater albums?
the albums are not supposed to sound the same, or be the same, that's why they call it PROGRESSIVE metal!
i think that each of the Dream Theater albums all have different qualities that make them excellent!
Some people are just going to complain either way, regardless of whether or not it sounds the same as the others.
Wings of Purity Official
Exactly, it happens to every band ... every single one, the new album is always bashed and "its not the band im used to like!" .. but then after some new releases, the album that was bashed.. is now "really good!" ... so ya, thing of everyday i guess.
I didn't expect myself to like this album because people have been criticising it, but hey it's pretty wicked!
Kinda like a final boss battle theme from a Final Fantasy game.
2:01 why is nobody talking about this part?! It's pretty simple compared to what came before, but it's a perfect transition to a epic moment, and Jordan's organ sound just adds that extra oomph.
The riff that plays over the solos, starting at 2:33, consists of one measure of 6/4 and one of 5/4. This collective 11/4 pattern is played twice during the solos, for a total of 22 beats. Let's call this Pattern A. Over the first guitar solo, Mangini plays a strict 4/4 beat while Pattern A is played underneath, technically creating a groove of 2 measures of 4/4 and one of 3/4, or 2+2+3/4 over 11/4.
Then, in the second guitar solo, Petrucci plays a measure of 4/4 during the first 6/4 measure by playing a high C#, and then on beat 5 begins a descending pattern of seven 16th notes which lasts throughout Pattern A. So he plays 10 measures of 7/16 and then two extra sixteenth notes to fill in the measure (or 72 sixteenth notes total). As we said before, Pattern A has 22 beats total, or 88 sixteenth notes. Subtract the four beats in the beginning of Pattern A where JP is playing in 4/4, and you get 88 minus 16, or 72.
In doing this, Dream Theater has taken away our ability to have nice things. But Dream Theater IS a nice thing, so really Dream Theater is just telling us that we can't have Dream Theater.
Dude you should go teach maths
Great song! Like Erotomania, an instrumental with nice catchy riffs, great show off moments, and a feel of continuity despite it's craziness.
I prefer this kind of instrumental to the 20 minute over the top ones.
+Nicolas Michaud Same. Exact same.
Mangini, you were awesome last night buddy..You really brightened up the stage with your positive energy!
This song is the mother of all songs!
AWESOME MIKE MANGINI!
This is one of the masterpieces of DT
dream theater meine absolute wahl als vollblut musiker alle elemente die man als progressive band hier mitbringt sind weltbeste 1.klasse euer fan norbert aus oberschleissheim
Parts of this song remind me of Erotomania from their Awake album
+JUNTEX I used to hate the intro organ chords to that so much but now Im a fucking slut for that song. Same thing happened when I first listened to "Empty" by Emperor.
The machine on the photo is not an Enigma Machine. Actually, it is a Bombe, a machine used to find the settings used in an enigma machine.
My body was not ready.
Yep. That's a good summary for this song.
0:46-1:18 ladies and gentleman... i present to you Dream Theater, in all its greatness. with their awesome, long but enjoyable songs, with awesome lyrics, and they epic, amazing guitar solos. by far my most favorite metal band ever. i love em'. i dig their music man...
Mantap memang Dream Theater nih......harat banar manciptakan music-music progresif berkualitas tinggi.......klo ulun perhatikan....sound snarex Mangini berbeda di album ini dibanding album sebelumnya.....Dream Theater rawk.....Tur lagi pank ke Indonesia
To people comparing older DT to know have no idea what they're talking about. When you listen to a modern DT record and then go back to Images or Awake, their sound is drastically different.
People need to stop making comparisons and just enjoy the damn music. I love DT, and while I didn't care for SC or BCSL, they are my favourite band and have always made me enjoy their music in some fashion. This record is incredible and a great step to reinventing their sound.
pretty big fan of the new album. Still needs more time to grow on me. Definitely better than ADTOE imo. Like the different sounds on the different tracks and James has some great parts. Was looking for a little more from Illumination Theory.. feels like it doesnt go anywhere. Just kinda ends. There isnt that moment that gives me the chills like Count of Tuscany or Octavarium does.. But overall great album, cant wait to hear it live
Music is really an matter of taste...lol
Illumination Theory gives me chills. Count of Tuscany makes me laugh. :P
This is how the inspector gadget theme should have sounded!
Great song, an instrumental where the whole band can show off. Great basslines too, and Petrucci's sound is always the best. Maybe somebody who said the snare sounds bad is right... I've got the feeling it is too compressed, or tuned too low. It's kinda flat. I don't know much about drums.
I certainly agree with you - this is amazing music that shows the bandmembers' talents. But I do think that a true display of DT's talent is a few of the songs from their earliest days as DT. JLB is there too, right? His F# tone is unreal, as is the tone of JP's guitar, MM's drums (not so much about 'tone'), JM's bass lines, and JR's keyboards. Cheers mate!!
Most Dream Theater songs that are really technical like this are in the Chromatic Scale which mean they have all 12 notes of the musical scale. Every run you're hearing though is in a diatonic scale though meaning that there's only 5 notes of the chromatic scale being used. I don't know the scale or key of this song though. They're probably just switching scales around to fit the song. If I'm wrong feel free to correct me.
This song deserves more likes!
Lucas Divino Why? I don't think the song cares
The part starting at 3:37 is about as Dream Theater as it gets.
dustmouse reminds me of Octavarium.
@@kaleidoscopeeeee yup, and In The Presence Of Enemies
Reminds me of the count of Tuscany
I admit as good as ADTOE was in 2011 I still wasn't sold on the idea of a DT without Portnoy at the time. Then self titled came out in 2013 and I remember listening to it for the first time, specifically when I got to Enigma Machine and I was like 'Okay, Dream Theater are back baby! We are in business!'
Side note: I can't believe these memories are now already so nostalgic.
I love this tune. For me, it has most of what any good prog tune should offer a listener.
Man, I love the parts 0:42, and 4:22. 0:42 sounds so weird, and amazing at the same time, while... 4:22 is like mysterious, or something. My English is not the best, so... yeah.
I don't know...to me this song is reminiscent of a few past DT songs/albums: 1:20-1:40 sounds like something off of I&W (particularly some of the guitar in Take the Time), 3:37-4:20 sounds A LOT like the last couple or three minutes of 8VM, and the rest is almost like Awake meets ToT. It kinda feels like a mix of old and new at the same time. Obviously each of their albums has its own unique audio mix, but there are a lot of things in this song that remind me of both old and new DT songs.
i think this song captures what DT is all about!
how so much combinations of noises perfectally matched can turn into something so full of beauty, misterious and mind trips? What enigma! I love these guys!
Reply to scotto132: You're absolutely right. I admit that earlier I have been comparing old DT to new and have come to the conclusion that no matter what, they're still brilliant and create awesome music. It's still okay to have a favorite album/song - everyone has their own opinions of course - but, differences aside, just let it be and realize we're listening to yet another DT masterpiece. So, my apologies and DT still rules (Portnoy or not.).
SOOOO AWSOOOOME!!! They are the greatest band!!!
Simply Brilliant .....
Enigma machine by dream theater is the catchiest song I've ever heard. That song is catchy
I have waited a long long time to hear john myung given a good prominent place in the mix on a DT album and he sounds mega on this. Great tone at last!
*The best Labrie's performance*
Daviid Calderón lol
haaaa
He even admitted it himself
J Venturella when
Bullshit. You can barely hear the tambourine
thanks for sharing
Roadrunner Records
love this song
Every album depresses me more as a Myung fan. In the classic days, the Ytse Jam and Learning to Live days, he added so much. I miss those days...
I still love the new Album though.
one of the best by Dream Theater, excellent!
awesome guitar solo parts!
Am I the only one who thinks the artwork looks identical to the PC game Amnesia? In terms of atmosphere.. Awesome!
Lack of creativity made this song a simple version of what it could have been if they had done it a few years ago
That is so cool thanks, I have never heard about that cover album before :-D On RUclips I have found it as “Jordan Rudess - Tarkus (Emerson, Lake & Palmer Cover)”. The riff is at 19:05.
DT is also playing the same in another tune. I am so damn sure.
I want so much to see this great song live!
Dream Theater is the LIFE
Amezing the best song
"Dream Theater" is great album. strong all the way through.
A mi me siguen pareciendo los mejores. Unos auténticos maestros. Cada vez que oigo el disco me gusta más y se que en enero disfrutaré de lo lindo en su concierto en Barcelona. Vivan los D.T.!!!!!
Epic!
awesome guitar
Amazing!
This is the new millennium song RUSH's YYZ but, on STEROIDS!! Is there a pattern to the drumming & is played the same every time live? Thanx. I wish you guys success on your new master piece that is OUT OF THIS FREAKIN UNIVERSE!!!
like this kind of stuff, you should try some Planet X, it's hard to really get into it the first times, but then it sounds awesome !
i'm in love with those pictures
I agree.
To me it's different, yet the same, if that makes sense. Love this group!!
Yup, I also recognized the spacy part of Count Of Tuscany in it. Just as the solo of The Enemy Inside sounds a lot like the one in On The Backs Of Angels.
best perfomance
+Papung Van Bourough LOL
Has anybody else noticed that this song is structurally very similar to Rush's YYZ?
Enigma Machine is the best of the álbum.....
Beste band ever!!
Amazing.
It's dream theater dude. It's probably a mix of all your diatonic, harmonic minor, pentatonic, diminished, augmented and whatever else lol.
This song is completely amazing and the new album awesome but then again what would you expect from DT. Can't wait to see them live Petrucci said it will be a 3 hour show no opening bands. It's going to be GD mind blowing!!
please release the video you had on the concert!
lovely
ladies and gentlemen...john petrucci
So we meet again, brother...
Hahaha
Wth?
Halloween season vibe love it chills
Awesome> I always have liked Dream Theater.
This is bloody mental! I love it !
well for me (and some people) it's not about the amount of skills or technicity, it's just about the music, i like Planet X as much as i Like Dream Theater, or Steve Vai, Or Racer X ..
Tarkus Emerson, Lake and Palmer part 1 "Eruption"
Jordan Rudess love this song.
Brutal
the best song of the album
This song and Enemy Inside are the only ones that I trully do enjoy out of this album, the rest barelly sounds like Dream Theater
You have no idea what Dream Theater truly sounds like. I bet this is your 2-3 album you've listened too.
It is called Prog Metal... not K Pop.
Dream Theater doesn't have a 'sound'. They're progressive. Progressive means always changing.
Ben Every band has it's own sound...lolz
Makkusu some bands call themselves prog when they are not. Stop attempting to insult people through types. lol
This song deserves a lot of headbanging... it's just awesome... =D
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
truely a masterpiece
I love Dream Theater and Mike Mangini is great with them but is anyone else not digging his snare sound on this album besides me???
Since a while a have not same desire to listen DT. Since Metropolis. Something went wrong with them.
One of the best songs on the album
I'm a pretty serious Dream Theater fan, but I love Planet X as well. Virgil Donati is in a league of his own.
Gotta love the comments. Only people who really care about the music can get as excited or pissed off as us
best thing i've heard on the album so far :D
0:45 kinda sounds like the theme for inspector gadget :P
spine chilling instrumental 11/10 ☠☠☠☠
yes!!!!
DT's best instrumental yet IMO. Amazing display of drumming on this one.
JayTor2112 do you really think this is better than stream of consciousness or dance of eternity?
on which album is this song?
i accept ur challenge, althou its only gonna be the three of us, i can't find any keyboardist crazy enough to pull this off from where i'm from
Beginning rhythm is very like Dyer's Eve
WTF It's true!!
I looked it up because I wanted to see for myself and it was spot on
are you kidding? Myung kills it on this album.
Reminiscent of Erotomania, it can really stand up to it, in my opinion.
Dream Theater need to post the animation that goes with this track on their channel. The one that goes with it in their live shows, it's so much better than the actual music video they released...
