To hear him tell it, he was very unhappy before meeting Yoko. In fact, he calls this particular period in 1965-1966 his “fat Elvis” period when all he did was drink to excess, eat, and sit around watching tv. You can see the weight in his face here. He had many reasons to be unhappy. He was in a loveless marriage, felt trapped by fame, and felt like he had no friends. Paul was never his best friend, nor have they ever described each other as such. Except for maybe Paul after John’s death, but Paul will say anything.
1:36 John sings the wrong lyric, yet George and Paul sing the CORRECT backing vocals to the incorrect lyrics, but then switch to sing thr actual correct backing vocals to recover John's mistake. Absolute seamless, legendary recovery.
Whoa nice catch. They really did it so seamlessly that it's hard to pick out. Just shows how much they've practiced together and how well they understood each other
@Danielzzz28 What's wrong with being inspired by a legendary band? Everyone knows that how influential the Beatles were. I really don't know what are you trying to say man, I know the entire Queen discography and there is not one song that sounds exactly like anything that the Beatles have ever done, Queen was something else. Both bands are legendary in their own way, legends support legends. Voice-wise Freddie has an incredible vocal range and a voice that can't be compared to anybody else's, there's talent in every single atom of his body. It's simply dumb to deny this, these are facts.
Yes, it's remarkable how much music came from just two guitars and a bass. No keyboard, no synthesizer. And no lip-sync. The tempo is just a hair faster than on the released recording.
A great performance but there was definitely post production. The vocals were gussied up with some compression, etc. standard procedure to even out the projection as the singers drift off their mics slightly...a trained eye can see/hear it.....
Paul and George helped him on the second verse when John started to repeat verse 1 instead of going to 2. They brought him back with the verse with their backing. They give him Help on Help!
It wasn't the fat that made him good. It was just him taking the right drugs. When he just had a drink and some uppers he was unstoppable. Then he took acid, and eventually heroin and become a shadow of what he was and lost his spark. There is no way the John Lennon of 1965 let's McCartney run the show the way he ended up doing post-Epstein's death in 1968 - 1970.
The most amazing thing is they hit the starting vocal notes perfectly , no frame of reference for pitch , a guitar note or something .. just BAM spot on . Best band ever , hands down .

@@durangomcmurphy1529 Exactly. It's antiphonal. Which is why John was so carefree at that point, whereas George hit the cue again because, as you pointed out, John had rambled on. An absolutely brilliant arrangement all the way through, and brilliantly performed live.
I like the vibe and they sound incredible live - all of it, especially vocals, but in verse 2 John got the line wrong repeating verse 1 and was put back on track by Paul and George’s backing vocals bringing him back to right lyric. He got Help on Help! Somehow that just makes this version of the song better to me.
I noticed this before I learnt how bad his eye sight was. Ironically I have terrible eye sight and didn't wear glasses for a long time. I was able to recognized it in his gaze, thinking to myself "this guy can't see shit". I had to chuckle when I learned about his decision to finally get glasses.

I've been a professional musician for 48 years due to the Beatles appearing on Ed Sullivan and I feel this is without a doubt the absolute best live version they ever performed. The timing, harmonies and energy was as good as or maybe better than the studio cut.
I always wondered if the Beatles hadn't been around to inspire musicians such as you to form a Rock band, would there even had even been a classic rock era that lasted till about the mid 90? 🤔

There was never a better live band than the Beatles. Flawless vocals, harmonies and instrumentation. Of course, having amazing songs didn't hurt either.

And I could tell he wanted to get back in the car and leave.Because of the crowds gathering around him.But I never had nothing for him to sign so I took a english £20 pound note out my wallet and just about got it signed. And he said I thought you we're giving me that money.. Cheeky monkey..Lols..
I've watched this clip time and time again. It says everything about what The Beatles were. This live appearance in front of screaming fans was performed without any floor monitors, side-fills or in-ear systems and shows just how good these guys were live. They literally can't hear themselves above the noise of the audience, the amps their guitars were blasting out from or Ringo's drums yet the result is simply spectacular. It just doesn't get much better than this.... in my humble opinion.
Ringo said in an interview he did not have the music in front of him because he cannot read music, and the only way he knew his que above the screams was watching John's movements!
1:36. John sings the wrong line (should be 'But every now and then I feel so insecure'). You can see Paul&George smile at the same time. As far as I can recall he messed up the lyrics in 'Help' also , at least, in 3 out of the following recorded US shows: Shea Atlanta Hollywood bowl Huston (one of the two shows). Can't recall which he didn't... But many years ago I was playing bootlegs all day, everyday, and noticed that. John also messed up 'you can't do that' in the Poll winners concert 1964, and there too P&G were quick to cover it up. Paul had a tendancy to screwup with 'I'm down'.
....and here’s why. Their Talent. Their songwriting talent. Their live-performance acumen. Their special one-of-kind-never-seen-before-never-will-again Love Bond for each other and for each other’s talents and playing. A deep deep respect. All that put together is WHY they sound so darn good and so damn great performing live. And why we will never see anything like them again. The Beatles.
I saw Paul McCartney live this past June. The dude was 80 but still rocked out. Sure he isn’t what he was but every little movement he makes in this video he still makes today. It’s fabulous lol!
The Beatles are God tier, I mean wow. Not only are their lyrics out of this world, on the studio versions I'm always blown away with how amazing their music sounds, and even the live version sounds at least as good as the studio version. 4 legends that the world could never forget
This is one of a few compositions/songs that I could listen to forever. It is almost unbelievable that John, at that age, could craft something that will never lose its message.
I'm 68 tears old, first saw them on Ed Sullivan, I was hooked and still the same feeling today, they were the best and I dont think any other band will ever be able to replace this pure talent an perfectness, their just to good!
If you had any doubt that these 4 men from Liverpool were the greatest band ever, surely you can't argue against it after this performance, and being a band member for many years this speaks volumes how far in front of any band ever they were.
John Lennon was an extremely complicated man. A musical genius, but I think a tortured soul. I think this song marks an inflection point of the Beatles. Previously they had sophomoric lyrics (“Love, love me do. I know I love you. I’ll always be true…). Here, they are beginning to show more depth, showing more than simple high school emotions. Beginning, not fully developed, but it evolved to stuff like “Carry That Weight” and “Eleanor Rigby.”
Help! I need somebody Help! Not just anybody Help! You know I need someone Help! When I was younger so much younger than today I never needed anybody's help in any way But now these days are gone and I'm not so self assured Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being 'round Help me get my feet back on the ground Won't you please, please help me? And now my life has changed in oh so many ways My independence seems to vanish in the haze But ev'ry now and then I feel so insecure I know that I just need you like I've never done before Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being 'round Help me get my feet back on the ground Won't you please, please help me? When I was younger, so much younger than today I never needed anybody's help in any way But now these days are gone and I'm not so self assured Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being 'round Help me get my feet back on the ground Won't you please, please help me? Help me, help me Ooh
The quality, richness and tight synchrony these guys exhibit is remarkable. This live version, played without electronic enhancement is a testament to the unparalleled greatness of The Beatles.
It's amazing how similar it sounds to the record when they perform live. Every band these days sounds like a garage band when they perform live cause everything's done in post and the actual band has very little talent in comparison
Right up to about 1966, the goal was always to try and make the record sound as good as the live performance. And it wasn't just being able to create loops-getting a full bass sound was not easy to do on a record, especially since rock acts didn't typically get the best equipment and engineers. Remember that Parlorphone was seen by EMI as being their "second tier" label
John was the MAN in this wonderful group. Paul was the balladeer, but John was the consummate rocker!!!! Love both, but John just amazes with the raspy & the versatility of his voice.

Yeah, i didn't even notice it the first time.

Man, those back vocals are magical
No overdrive, no post production, no auto-tune, just pure talent. Playing live this tight isn't easy, it's studio quality.
Same!
Yes, it's remarkable how much music came from just two guitars and a bass. No keyboard, no synthesizer. And no lip-sync. The tempo is just a hair faster than on the released recording.
The fuck has overdrive to do with it?
Yes - also, another thing that is hardly ever said is how good a rhythm section Paul and Ringo were. They were perfect.
A great performance but there was definitely post production. The vocals were gussied up with some compression, etc. standard procedure to even out the projection as the singers drift off their mics slightly...a trained eye can see/hear it.....

"Fat" John, was the best John. Although he may have considered himself fat during this period, I think he looks healthy and handsome.
He doesn't seem to be that kinda fat maybe he's just that masculine but years later drugs hit him hard and went skinny.
Yes
It wasn't the fat that made him good. It was just him taking the right drugs. When he just had a drink and some uppers he was unstoppable. Then he took acid, and eventually heroin and become a shadow of what he was and lost his spark. There is no way the John Lennon of 1965 let's McCartney run the show the way he ended up doing post-Epstein's death in 1968 - 1970.
Yeah he got skinny when they became older. But I love paul, john, george and ringo

Sheer, unadulterated, musical genius. Song, performance, vocals, playing - everything is perfect.

All their more than 200 songs still so good to play and hear even after 60 years. Timeless songs of Beatles.
George at such a young age was so clever as a lead guitarist. It is incredible how good there rythim was together. ❤️
They had it all: Looks, talent, wisdom, sense of humor and a strong bond between the four of them.
The most amazing thing is they hit the starting vocal notes perfectly , no frame of reference for pitch , a guitar note or something .. just BAM spot on . Best band ever , hands down .
George hits the cue pitch softly a few times, starting around 00:22
@@paulo1149 Oh, yeah , i can hear it . George hits it at 00:19 and again I guess because John kept talking , again 00:31 . Thanks I thought it was some mystical gift granted by the Gods .

@@durangomcmurphy1529 Exactly. It's antiphonal. Which is why John was so carefree at that point, whereas George hit the cue again because, as you pointed out, John had rambled on. An absolutely brilliant arrangement all the way through, and brilliantly performed live.
By any standard, this take of "Help" is sheer perfection in every way.
@stevemt Apart from John forgetting the lyrics in the second verse...

John was screwing up the lyrics of 'Help' quite often. I believe the rest were expecting it to happen...

1:36. John sings the wrong line (should be 'But every now and then I feel so insecure'). You can see Paul&George smile at the same time.
As far as I can recall he messed up the lyrics in 'Help' also , at least, in 3 out of the following recorded US shows:
Shea
Atlanta
Hollywood bowl
Huston (one of the two shows).
Can't recall which he didn't... But many years ago I was playing bootlegs all day, everyday, and noticed that.
