In Fredrikshald, what happened was that the Swedish king, tried to attack it twice, failed both times, but the the area got burnt down. The last of the two, the Swedish king died.
FYI. Fredrikshald (Called Halden now) is where Charles XII (King of Sweden) died. This was back in 1718. It was either the norwegian/danish people who killed him or his own people. We don't know.
The new King of Sweden and Norway went to Halden in Norway to look at the great fortress there. He was guided around by the General of the Norwegian Armed Forces. When the King wondered why all the cannons were pointed towards his home of Sweden, the General answered: Your Highness, they are pointed at the enemy, Sir.
it's probably fredriksten the song implores to remember, where norwegian forces defeated the mighty karl XII of sweeden in battle. nobody knows the exact circumstances of his death and to this day historians debate wether norwegians killed him or wether his own men were fed up with a war he was fighting relentlessly and killed him so they could finally bring an end to the fighting. Karl was quite a determined and mighty general as more ppatriotic historians believe the norwegian who supposedly shot him took a silver bullet, put it in his mouth and recited "pater noster" before taking the shot
I'm from Sweden, and I've heard the story that a Norwegian soldier actually shot him with a button torn from his jacket, simply because he'd run out of bullets. Probably not true, but I like that version.
TheFutureViking the patriot story says he used a silver button (bullet was a misrememberance) because he thought Karl was a demon of sorts. usualy in a situation like these both sides have a farfetched patriotic story of nonsense either to big up themseves or ridicule the enemy. for example when the moors didn't conquer Austurias the austurians claimed they won against thousands with 30 men and that the moor catapults had caused a rock slide which crushed their own men. meanwhile the moors said that the 30 men were "a pack of lost donkeys" and not worth killing
Acually that part is about the first of the two times he attacked the city. The swedish captured the city, but the citisens burned down the city to force them out. The swedish then had to retreat, and the city was free again. Im actually from Fredrikshald, or Halden as it is called now. So I'm quite sure
+krissases Norway appreciated being under Denmark and never had any liberty desire. It was under good terms that Norway was in a union with Denmark. We would most likely be in a union with Denmark if we didn't get forced under a Swedish union. So no need to be hostile to Denmark as it was Norways past country men that desired Denmarks culture and wanted to be a part of it.
+No.XVII the Red Mage Gamer This Anthem was written shortly after our several decades long union with Denmark ended, and we got our own constitution, flag and language. There was also a rather awfull war with Sweden going on at the time, and the people fought as not to lose everything all over again. The patriotism was at an all time high because of this, and it shows in the anthem.
Yeah, but you can't translate it directly. "Ja vi elsker dette landet" directly translated means: "Yes we love this country". But normally you would rather say: "Oh, we love this country"
krissases The line you present us with means something different though. "Oh, we love this country" can be used by anyone anywhere. It just becomes a piece of information. "Yes, we love this country" could be meant as an answer. As if the writer tries to convince someone questioning the patriotism. Still, it's nearly impossible to tell with something written 200 years ago. Meanings can change alot over the years.
Daniel Meek Gynnild I am absolutely sure you will have some right COMPELLING arguments to back that claim, yeah? Because anyone in a decently civilized and functional nation has all the right in the world to believe they live in the best nation on the planet. It will only ever be true from their own point of view, because believe me, there are shitty failed states out there like Somalia where some people will genuinely think, this place is pretty good, best nation on the planet - all the while this will be objectively wrong, not just subjectively wrong. So, I'm absolutely sure you can back your statement above. Do share, I really want to hear this.
''Do they have moose?'' made me laugh, mainly because it's our national animal. You might laugh at it being that animal but the moose will fuck you up, it's also the last animal you want to hit in a head on collision.
+Reece Harrison They'll still come in for the annual adventure book stream and other projects; they're just not a permanent employee of the Yogscast, is all.
Very cool that you picked norway😁 And btw, when you sing or listen to the national song, you are supposed to have your right hand on your heart🇳🇴 And we are very nice actually, but in public we are VERY shy and we don't talk to strangers😂
Yeah, even in WWII both the Germans and the British had plans for an invasion of Norway. The Germans simply beat the Brits to the punch because the laying of minefields in Norwegian waters threatened their iron imports from that come through northern-Norway. (Narvik specifically) So my country has been passed around like a god-damn blunt for hundreds of years, feels bad man.
I vote that we change our national anthem to Simon's interpretation at the start of the video. I would love to hear Kongens Garde try to play that on May 17th. xD
You don't do a military salute when you sing the Norwegian national anthem. Only countries that celebrates with military style is Russia and North-Korea. And maybe United States sometimes. But in Norway we put a hand on the chest, over the heart
They should properly hear the Swedish anthem :) It's one of the least patriotic one sin existence (it's not about Sweden but about all of northern Europe) xD
Tobias Berg One would expect that, yes, but actually the song was written in 1844 long after we had released/lost the majority of the countries we had conquered and Sweden and Norway was a Union, on it's way to Norwegian independence. The song was written for and because of the Swedish landscape, but much of it actually goes for all Norwegian, Finnish and Danish landscapes as well. The original writer didn't intend it to be the national anthem, but a tribute to our land, neither is it officially our national anthem, it's only traditional, and it means so much to the people that it's kept going. We have many other song that would fit better as SWEDEN'S national anthem, but I guess we like the one we have :)
You do realize that Norway dosent have a National anthem... We never have gotten ''around'' to it, BUT we use ''Ja vi elsker'' (Yes we love) as a ''replacement''.

fun fact, the writer of the song was called Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, which directly translates to Bearstar Bearson (son of bear)
Only in Norway.
haha my real first name is Bjørgne...
jeg er i slekt med han
+Lord Barrington Smithe Clearly you haven't heard about Thorbjørn. "Thor bear".
The lyrics were, correct, the music was actually composed by his cousin Rikard Nordraak who was only 21 years old.
A bunch of blood thirsty Vikings..
Turned out to become one of the happiest and nicest people on earth. (Not to mention, the safest country )
easy to be nice when you don't have to worry about food or anything else bashing you down.

It's funny to listen to English speakers trying to speak Norwegian, they have a distinct pronunciation.

Sounded danish to me with the way he said "Landet"
In Fredrikshald, what happened was that the Swedish king, tried to attack it twice, failed both times, but the the area got burnt down. The last of the two, the Swedish king died.
I'm from Fredrikshald (Halden) ;)
Lord Barrington Smithe I do, yeah.

Edit: Not anymore...
well it used to be a part of Denmark
No, it was it's own state, but in a personal Union with Danmark, but we last under the Swedes, not the Danish.

if you didn't know why I pointed this out was becouse Lewis asked about it at 2:50.
And he brought meatballs from Ottoman Empire to Sweden!
Yeah i tought it was funny too. But that is also why Coffe is so popular in the nordics.
"what happened down at fredrikstad?" "we- we don't talk about that!" XD ROFL!

"Norwegians: they're alright."™
That's a pretty National Anthem... The actual words were a bit weird in places, as Lewis and Simon pointed out, but it was still nice.
+No.XVII the Red Mage Gamer Thank you! Just a citizen not the writer, but still :)
+No.XVII the Red Mage Gamer It's because it's not properly translated. The grammar is alright in Norwegian.

Wow thanks for that random uninteresting fact?
