Was given a rug kit with one of these back in the 70s. Never made it. Now I think I will make the rug for my young granddaughter. Had no idea how to use it. Thank you. Now I can give it a good try. I liked your video and found it very useful.
Hi Sarah, your technique tutorial is really well done, especially how you’ve demonstrated the mechanics of loop making. I’ve been a rug maker, hooker, puncher for decades, having grown up around the corner from the original Phentex factory. I’m currently punching a bath mat with phentex yarn on a vintage phentex frame. Neither the frames or punch needles are made any longer but can be found in thrift shops from time to time, as I have. The yarn is now made by Spinrite in Listowel, Ontario, Canada. This yarn is 100% Olefin, a tough man made fibre, great for mats that see a lot of wear. I like working with several elements at the same time in order to achieve nuanced colours and textures. So much fun! If you’d like to go down the rabbit hole further, let’s connect.
Hi Pat, Thanks for saying so and glad you enjoyed it! I would love to connect and hear more. I'm a bit swamped with work at the moment but maybe in the upcoming months. Let me know how to reach you? Or shoot me a message here: www.sarahvitak.com/contact
@@yankeh I prefer liquid latex for it’s flexibility. I’ve tried carpet glue but find it stiff. The latex has more ‘tack’ especially on a wood or tile floors.
@@yankeh sorry I hit reply before I was finished… I’m not aware of tutorials specifically about bath mats. I think the key is in the materials chosen I.e. yarns or fabrics that can withstand wear and dry reasonably quickly. I prefer synthetics mostly because they are resistant to moisture and dirt. Wool would work but it’s not as robust for cleaning. I toss my polyester mats in the washing machine frequently including those backed with latex.
Thankyou for explaining things in such a simple easy to understand way and excellent visuals. I’m hoping to buy one of these and starting my tufting journey soon (and the guns are so expensive! 😅) I hope you stuck with it and made some amazing creations ❤️
Great. Another person using a vintage punch tool or "speed carpet tool". I bought a "Danella tool" right before Christmas. I found a few videos under that name & saw a few vintage speed punch tool videos here on RUclips. Danella sold out after that. The clicking sound is very relaxing and rhythmic. For spacing with the Danella I use the side edge bar as a guide like a sewing pressure foot. I keep the bar edge on top and along the row next to it.
Thank You! I just recently found an old RC Rug Crafters rug set with a tufting tool just like the one you used. I was trying to find out how to use it and I found your wonderful video. Thanks again! Blessings, CF
Hey! In my punch needling I try to skip a lanes width when I'm needling because you get super dense over crowding and by the time you're done with it, the puffiness turns the whole piece into like a sphere because it bubbles out so much. I'd just make sure you don't get any bubbling on the nice side of the rug and you'll be good 😊
Very cool. I almost bought a mechanical tool because those tufting guns are expensive and were sold out around the time I looked up how to tuft rugs. Some were out of stock for nearly a month! All I found were hand punch tools. I skipped on buying a mechanical tool for the time being because I couldn't find any instructions online 😅
Ive got an old 1970’s Ronco kit similar to yours. Haven’t touched at as the instructions were none too clear, but this tutorial has helped me enormously. Will get it out and give it a go! Thank you🎉
If you're wondering why you're getting a huge amount of traffic all of the sudden, Adam Savage just posted one of these as a mystery tool, looking for anyone to help identify what it is - ruclips.net/video/NMJMByfNPFQ/видео.html
Oh lord. I think I was better off not knowing that Adam Savage had a mystery tool segment. hahahaha. Goooodddbyyyeee freee time! 😂😂 Thanks for sharing! I never would have figured that out!
Thank you for this!! I was just wondering, once its finished is there something to do to secure the yarn so one tug/snag doesnt rip a whole line out? This is very cool and I’d love to give it a try!!
Yes! Depending on what you want to do with it people use different methods, but most involve putting something sticky on the back and letting it dry. This tutorial is really good: ruclips.net/video/7Ysn4ObadRE/видео.html
It has to be threaded through. See ~4:55 in the video. Once it is threaded I've never had it fall out. Maybe have your loose tail end coming through be longer?
I have the same to your punch but mien is little be for ,30year that can be old model but i need only needle how you can help me can i sendmy punch picture

@PatLawson - I would love to make a bath mat! What adhesive do you use? Do you know of any good bathmat tutorials??

OMG! I used one of these back in the late 70’s when I was in 8th grade. So much fun.

Thank you so much for this! I found a non adjustable Phentex machine at my local antique shop but hadn’t figured out how to use it yet. Super helpful!
Throwback to my childhood. Used one of these in late 70s when I was in 8th grade.

This video helped me out a ton. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Excellent demo with this hand rug tufter. Thanks so much!
You’ve inspired me. I just bought one off of EBay, complete with original box and instructions.
Thanks Sarah, I was given one of these tools and didn’t know what it was used for.
love that 80's like looks of yours
Woah hi friend! I didn't know these hand versions existed. Your video came up while I was looking at tufting. I so want one
!! Sttaahhpp! Thats amazing!
Excellent and valuable instruction! Thank you.

Thanks that is helpful! Yes, I experienced the bubble on my first attempt. I think I'm still doing them a bit too close but its looking ok.

your frame set up is clever
haha thanks for the validation! I was way too proud of myself for like weeks after I came up with that one.
@@sarahvitak2400 your video has inspired me to give tapestry weaving a break and go back to tufting. are you on instagram?
I have a Rug Crafters Speed Tufting tool set and it recommends Vaseline as a substitute for their lube product.
Thank you for experimenting. Very good and informative video 👍

Thank you I just got this one
thank you for this and i love your hair!
Thank you so much for this video I have been looking for this tool for a long time.

The directions start at 6:52 for anyone that just wants the directions and not the story
Son de México dónde la puedo conseguir ese maravillo aparato se ve genial
Great video! I ordered a pair of there manual Turing machines but they are cut pile.
5 loops per inch for rug yarn and 7 loops per inch for tapestry yarn. The longer the loop, the wider the spacing.
Thanks
Good job, thanks for sharing!
