  • Learn how to grow okra in raised beds. Okra or Gumbo or Lady Fingers grow great in raised beds. Here are the best tips and advice ever for growing Okra. You can use Okra in a variety of dishes.
    Okra (US /ˈoʊkrə/ or UK /ˈɒkrə/; Abelmoschus esculentus Moench), known in many English-speaking countries as ladies' fingers, bhindi, bamia, or gumbo, is a flowering plant in the mallow family. It is valued for its edible green seed pods. The geographical origin of okra is disputed, with supporters of West African, Ethiopian, and South Asian origins. The plant is cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions around the world.

    I have been growing Okra for 1 1/2 seasons. I got here late for the first year. Okra has become my favorite crop. I live where it is hot and they grow like crazy, and so fast. Always the best videos, very relaxing to watch. I was worried you weren't going to talk. I had some red okra with the spineless and the red is beautiful and long like your Louisiana type you have here. My dogs like it also. Thank you again.

    Great post! Beautiful Okra. It is a staple here in the south. And yes what a beautiful bloom, related to the Hibiscus Flower. We joke around here that Okra is as easy to grow as weeds are out in the yard. And we never worry about insect damage to the okra plants. As few as dozen or more plants can keep a family of four eating okra for a complete year. .

      1betrman Great to know its a staple in the south. We can only grow it from May thru October here in SoCal, however that is good enough to get a nice growing season. Cheers!!

    I have a couple of questions. I live in Colorado, so before my plant hardens the season the fall sets in and it dies, for this reason can i grow my seeds in full sized pots using grow lights inside the house and then put them out june or july so that i get a decent season? will that work. Thanks.

    thanks for this great info. My little okra kept getting the leaves eaten by crickets this summer. I didn't know it needed so much fertilizer, next year I will be able to grow them better.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  10 лет назад

      DonnaldaSmolens Yes okra does need a lot of nutrients. Over the years I had grown okra with very less pods and a lot of insect damage but learned ways around it. A good way to feed okra plants is to use a slow release fertilizer which feeds up to 3 months and use a water soluble fertilizer in between every month or so. Or you can use water soluble fertilizers every 15-20 days, more when the pods are being produced. After the plants are about 5-6 feet tall, you can reduce or stop the feed till the end of the growing season..

      +Marietta Brennan No they should be green. Yellow is a sign of Nitrogen deficiency. You dont need to prune okra, the dead leaves fall down by themselves. You can trim the old dead branches though I did not prune my okra much.

    I'm an American living in the Philippines. I have never grown Okra myself, but the neighbor has one very large Okra plant. For a while it was nice and green and producing. Now, it seems to be dying. I never saw any bugs, and there are quite a few flowers at the top. Does this mean it is going to seed? Will it rebound?
    At the foot of the plant there is a vine growing. It isn't out of control, but does the Okra need a ton of nutrients and the vine is sucking up too much of it? Could that be the issue?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  8 лет назад

      +Gary Verderamo Okra needs warm temps to survive and will die slowly in the winters and no produce pods. Okra does need nutrients just like other veggies. I hope that answers your questions!

    • @GaryVerderamo
      @GaryVerderamo 8 лет назад

      California Gardening Well, it's quite warm here in the Philippines, so I will have to see what nutrients it needs most and tell my neighbor to get his butt in gear to add it if he wants to save his plant/tree. Thanks.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 лет назад

      Harold Wong I think the okra will die slowly in Dec-Jan. You might get lucky with over wintering, however I like to maximize output from my growing space so I would suggest to remove the okra (you can wait till Dec end - it might produce till then) and replace the area with a winter crop like cabbage/cauliflower/radish/spinach etc. This is what I am planning on doing in December :)
