Famously, Paul's stage monitor wasn't working during this performance so he couldn't hear himself singing. He must have perfect pitch to have been so in tune despite not being able to hear himself. He said in an interview that he almost stopped playing because he thought nobody could hear him, but then said to himself, this is the BBC so they have to be picking up my voice somewhere. Good thing he kept going.

Having read so many comments on this page I have to state that although 'Queen' were the best act on the day at Live Aid - Sir Paul McCartney was the biggest star at the event. By 1985 the Beatles were the biggest selling music act in history. 'Queen' regard the Beatles as one of their biggest influences. 'Queen' were huge fans of the Beatles. 35 years after 'Live Aid' Sir Paul is still having critically acclaimed and hit selling solo albums. His last album McCartney III went straight in at No1 on the UK charts Xmas 2020. His previous album 'Egypt Station' went straight in at No1 on the US charts. And the Beatles remain one of the biggest selling acts each year - despite having split up over half a century ago. Why? Because of those amazing songs.

Buzz Bates, at the time of the show, Dire Straits was the most popular. Geldof wanted them more than anyone else. He asked them first because he knew all the other acts who wouldn't commit would changed their minds if they knew Dire Straits would be there. At least that's what John Illsley said. Remember, this was the same year Brothers in Arms was released. The biggest selling CD in history at the time.

Some context - this was Paul's first live performance since John Lennon was shot. All three Beatles were still very reclusive at the time. Which is why he gets such an unbelievable reaction, and also explains why he only did one song. Ringo and George both refused to attend, as they were still worried about their security, at such a high profile event. Lennon's death encouraged lots of copycats, and all three remaining Beatles received regular death threats throughout the 1980s.
