MJ gave McCartney jack shit. Where did you get that from? McCartney sued a couple of years ago, around 2016/2017 I think, to recover his half share of the Lennon/McCartney catalog, as US copyright laws allow the artist/writer to reclaim the rights on anything published before 1978 - ie the whole Beatles catalog. So McCartney now owns half of the catalog, but MJ didn't give this to him. McCartney has a net worth of over £1.2 billion (most of which he had before re-acquiring his share of the Beatles rights), making him the most successful musician of all time (and that includes MJ), so thankfully he didn't need any gifts from MJ to enable him to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

yes, but the truth is that having your music in too many ads can “devalue” it, as paul said. an example that comes to mind is the black keys; i remember hearing their songs in so many commercials as a kid, before i even knew who they were. by the time they became mainstream, i’m sure a lot of their back catalog had lost a substantial amount of its value (which they did make up for through multiple albums and relentless touring in the early-mid 2010s). you’re right in that there’s nothing inherently wrong with “selling out”, but artists don’t just care about profits… they also care about their music’s artistic integrity, and in many of those cases it’s understandable when they turn such offers down.

@TheManMan You’re 100% correct. He said that exactly. I think Sir Paul didn’t take him seriously enough, or thought he was just kidding ... The one aspect where I think McCartney bears some blame is in not just buying the music himself. I know he briefly addresses that in this segment. And so he (McCartney) had to know that if he didn’t buy the publishing rights to the Lennon-McCartney Catalogue, SOMEONE eventually would, whether it be MJ or someone else. So that aspect of things is the only head-scratcher for me, where Paul seems perhaps a tad disingenuous. Maybe I’m missing something. Lol

Michael Jackson was an absolute legend. What a lot of people don’t know is that after Mike bought the catalogue, he gave Little Richard back his masters…FOR FREE. Little Richard was in debt and didn’t own his own music that he’d written, as many black artists of the time. Michael gave the true king of rock and roll back his masters and he was able to financially benefit from his work for 35 years until his death in 2020. Michael also gave Jackie Wilson’s widow his masters, also for free. Jackie Wilson was Michael’s predecessor and influenced Michael greatly as a boy. what people don’t understand is that music IS a business. When I think about the black artists who paved the way, I can’t help but think of how they were also taken advantage of by companies like the one Michael bought. The Beatles benefited greatly by co-opting the sounds of artists like Muddy Waters, and their whiteness allowed them to be massive stars around the world. The Beatles were great, but compared to black American artists before and around their time who didn’t get half the chance, the Beatles were overrated. Good on MJ for giving black artist back their work.

And people dont understand this fact that music is a huge business. He owned many catalogs aka music songs and albums aka the music rights. It warms my heart he gave back those masters for free. He owned so many catalogs that Sony became Sony ATV. And they wanted him to sell it. And Michael wouldn't. That is a very good reason to lie on someone throughout their career and attack them in the media wouldn't you say? And guess what Sony/ATV got their catalogs after he passed. But Michael Jackson and his family to this day still own Michael's catelog aka music right aka rights to his songs and Heal LA is still a huge thing through his son today
If my memory serves me he bought the rights around 1985. In 1982 he song beat it. Which only the light of this information I think the song can point to him thinking about buying those rights and what it would mean.

Wonder if Mike felt some kinda way cuz he knew the Beatles were heavily ripping from Muddy and Chuck Berry and others from that late 40s, early 50s era. I feel like he knew it and felt no reservations about grabbing that catalogue when the opportunity arose.
He told him ‘it’s just business’ as a way to keep the heat on himself instead of letting Paul know they had no love and respect from a lot of legends in the community. Saved Paul from that conversation too cause the Beatles had no concrete answers for explaining their own profit off others ‘originality’.
