I always think that Hilichurls were the people of a lost civilization that were cursed and turned Hilichurls like the people of Eldia in attack on titan are turned into titans.
That's what they are apparently, they're supposed to be cursed Khaenri'ans. Kaeya learned their language so he could communicate with his old friend.

I just realized that slimes are just pieces of the world that have sentient life and that the hillchurls literally give them life for different purposes, so they might be magical and slimes will never die out (unless there’s another way to create slimes but sometimes they pop out of nowhere so, teyvat just might be magical in its very core)
