Nice one Mark! Do you remember the droptop I built with you in 2006? The one with the brazilian mahogany back, birdseye maple cap and the Steve Lukather EMG's?

Do you prefer to use the Stanley type blade over a card scraper or cabinet scraper for any particular reason? Is it that they’re disposable and don’t require sharpening? Or is it that they’re multipurpose, i.e cutting and scraping?

Yes - plus there is always one nearby! All that and they are also very cheap and easy to find. I do use cabinet makers scraper blades if I need to get heavy...

How thick a blank must be for a 1/4 inch top? Can it be close? Like .27 .28? 1/4=.25

For a Drop Top I like to make the cap a little thinner than 1/4" to make them easier to bend - approx 3/16" (4.5mm) - 5mm max - or it might snap or crack when you try to bend it. So you could start with a .25" blank. After joining and cleaning up it should be around the right size (under .25"). You have to use your judgement as each piece of wood is unique. Good Luck!
