I loved the Ouya too - primarily because it was not locked down and was the first Android TV device that was designed for a TV interface. Nvidia Shield replaced mine.
I love the Ouya too. Only thing that sucks is that i got mine from a friend that had an extra main box. so I was able to buy it off of him, but wasnt able to get the controller for it. I would love to have the controller for it so I could have the complete console.
Yep. Love the Ouya too. Got the stock Silver model and the updated 16gb Black one. Used it to play a bunch of good indie games available in the Ouya shop (yes, most of it was crap but there were some fantastic games to get there) and to play thousands of games through emulation. Later I also got an Nvidia Shield but still play with the Ouya. Highly underrated console, bashed by people who actually didn’t know how to use it or enjoy what it could do.
Brandonsaurus64 As we've discussed before, me too! It's the only system I keep a stack of in case they fail. Also run both a u.s. and Japanese console to split the usage (and because the Japanese games need a ram cart so having another system's memory is nice since those 4in1s have such shoddy ram)
The Saturn is so dope. I only have it as an emulator, but the games are fantastic. Hadn't even heard of it before here in Norway even though the Master and the Mega did great in the 90's. Probably out shadowed by the PS I guess.
I got one for $35 with hookups and controller. I attached a 32gb San Disk Cruzer mini with a bunch of roms, installed some emulators, Nostalgia and I have myself a really handy emu machine. Very convenient to keep in the living room for easy access retro gaming.
Jose Vela Same! Found one for twenty pounds last week, been configuring ask the emulators, and Nostalgia ever since! PS3 pad seems to work best for me with minimal lag. So long as you configure everything nicely it's a really cute little emulator box. The pad that comes with it though...smh
If someone wants the good version of the Ouya just get a Shield TV. Strongest android device on the market, pretty much the best setop box for videostreaming + Kodi, you can rent/buy games via Nvidia and stream them without having a PC and it emulates every console basically perfectly that came out in the 90s including upresing and even runs dreamcast and some gamecube games.
ParadoxicGer yeah! Ouya paved the road to these kind of consoles but failed commercially... I think the Nvidia Shield TV as kind of spiritual successor of Ouya.
Yes, but that only works if you actually have a beefy machine - which most people don't have since they use (cheap) laptops. It's also less convenient than a setop box unless you leave it permantly attached to the tv.
ParadoxicGer Thats not true at all, they have it in 32 and 64 bit versions. I personally have 3 very entry level dual core machines using it alongside Windows.
mikieson Remix OS is a free Android based operating system that can be installed on most PCs and Laptops. Just like Windows, Its customized to be very easy to use with a mouse and keyboard desktop like setup. It has lots of familiar stuff from Windows baked in like the start menu, taskbar, minimize/maximize open tabs etc. You can look it up and get it from here: www.jide.com/remixos
The Ouya is making a small comeback thanks to the emulators you can install on it. 2 emulators were able to support dreamcast (nullDCe, and Reincast ), and now Phantasy Star Online (dreamcast addition) can now be played. (no discs or broad band adapter). Which also means Phantasy Stars Online is playable for both the offline and online mode. (adding another MMORPG to the list of playable games for the Ouya game console)
Man... a video about the Ouya... I was so excited when my partner got me one. I had such high hopes for it. Sadly it sits unused in a bag in my bedroom. With Virtual Console on my Wii U, and now having my Wii U hacked, I haven't found a lot of time to put the Ouya to good use. I really appreciate this video. The Ouya gets a lot of (well-deserved) hate, but I also think it is down-played to be lesser than what it is. It's a nifty system. I'm sure I will dig it out again. The fact that it connects via HD is a definite plus. No Framemeister required! I hope to make Ouya-compatible ports of any games I release in the future, for people like you who enjoy games for what they are; not for the click-bait and keywords thrown around the internet.
Thanks for the vid John! I actually watched this video yesterday and then in purchasing a used Wii console bundle from a local person on Craigslist I noticed they were also tossing an Ouya with 1 controller into the deal. I would have had no idea what that was if I had not seen this! I look forward to playing around with it :)
I went through three of those, they malfunctioned and/or didn't want to talk to my TVs over HDMI and got replacement units thrice. Still have mine hooked up.
I have the Ouya and I mainly use it for emulation when people come over and I don't want them touching my original hardware and games. As far as emulation goes is the raspberry pi that much better when it comes to Nes, Snes, and Sega? Or am I good with just the Ouya? Also can I connect 2 retro style controllers to the console at the same time? I hate the Ouya controller. I've paired my ps3 controller but I'd prefer retro style controllers for 2 player games. Thanks for the video.
Love you channel. I also have an ouya and use it all the time. I love collecting systems and games but don't have time at home to play. I travel every week for work and take the ouya with me. It is the perfect travel console.
I have an ouya and bought one when it released! I love it! I use it for emulation and also as my personal arcade machine! It works really good with an arcade stick and can run a lot of emulators with ease! Even today I still enjoy it! Nice video!
That seems like an awesome little system, kind of reminds me of like a gaming Roku. What are these things going for in the wild, can you get them fairly cheap or, are they hard to find??
I absolutely love “Grabbed by the Ghoulies” Love the graphics and the atmosphere. There’s actually a lot of depth to the game, if you give it a chance. I finished challenge 21.
Thanks for the great video John. This is one of the only consoles that didn't appeal to me right from the start . I didn't understand how downloaded games worked at the time so I just didn't bother with it .now I'd like to have one for my collection and to check out the c64 emulator and some of the good games that came out for it.
I understand your love man, best system for oddball/low budget/obscure/retro/Indie stuff and one of the best ways to play emulated games on a modern TV is the Ouya with a PS3 or a later model Ouya Controller.I also think the build quality was excellent and it is truely a portable system at that size
I really like my ouya, actually playing the retro emulation with nostalgia app, mame, ps1 and n64 emu are good, also played online the first time with meltdown is awesome, i have duckgame, bombsquad and neverending nightmares, good titles! the plus of netflix and cody gives u a better experience, do you know if i can sync my ps4 controller? actually i´m looking for a ps3 controller to sync. good video!
Dang it John, now I want an Ouya! Like many, I condemned it without ever giving it a try! I guess the dl-only deal is what I was most against? Thanks for showcasing this failed console. My favorite failed console would probably be the 5200...I LOVE that system, including the controllers! I also recently got to play a Virtualboy and really enjoyed that, as well!
Hi, great channel! I was wondering if you have any suggestions to safely clean game cartridges? Mainly I would be interested to see how you clean them so they play again, but it also might be interesting to see how you clean your cartridges for your collection.
I thought about buying an Ouya, because I actually liked some of the games that I was seeing videos on on RUclips. I don't suppose that the online store is still up?
dave4shmups its still up, but you cant register a new account anymore. so youre either already on the boat or not at all. closest thing now is a forge tv, which had a lot of the ouya games ported over. plus the addition of the play store. with a simple custom marshmallow rom and male to male usb cable, you can get netflix and usb storage.
I had the OUYA. It was alright. The controller felt a little cheap and taking off the hand grip covers to replace batteries on it could be a pain. I mostly use it for Emulation. It's still good for that if you want basic emulation. Today I have the Nvidia Shield Android TV. Which is everything the OUYA should have been and more, but still I appreciate the effort they made with the OUYA.
Yo, John! Tons of props for using toilet paper cardboard cores as cable binders -- doing the same! Never under-estimate the "how to" educational value of the internet. ;-) (Or is it "cable ties"? Whatever -- you'll get what I mean.)
Got to love your enthusiasm John, my favourite console wasn't a failure but not as respected as I think it should be and that is the Gamecube. So many great games and in my opinion better than the N64, which is for some reason peoples favourite Nintendo console despite being behind the times with its carts and having a dreadful controller.
Ouya was kind of early attempt to make cheaper casual gaming console and I loved the idea. I hoped it would made its way to store shelves where I live but in the end that was not what happened. I think the Ouya made me believe to smaller lower cost consoles and that's why I'm considering to buy newest Nvidia Shield TV in the future. And by the way. your channel rocks!
I love my Ouya. There are several great games that I played first or discovered on the Ouya. I discovered Ittle Dew (a wonderful, hilarious Zelda clone) on the Ouya. It's not a great system by any means, but I loved it for what it was.
DatGameCollector I have owned two of them base and black variation. It was meh. Very underwhelming in my opinion. Nothing to separate it from the Wii. That said I'm excited for the switch.
I didn't play the Wii U until a few months ago and was wildly disappointed, Tried out like 6 games, most were exclusives I wanted to try, but they were either bad or exactly like other titles I've already played (ie mario maker - thought i'd love it but its hard to get excited over 2d mario after 30 years). I still want to get a Wii U but even with the recent price drop to $200 (used) it's still almost twice as much as I think it's worth. BTW I didn't get to try splatoon or wonderful 101, 2 games I'm still interested in.
To me it felt like a children's console. Like the 2ds it had huge bezels. Im excited for the switch because it was what the wii u should've been to begin with. A portable console that you can play on a big screen rather then a console that had a tablet.
definitely my favourite failed system!! love my games, love the system, should have done well but didn't making it the most underrated system of all time!
Man john your channel is like the third or fifth one I got un subscribed to by RUclips that I've noticed. Was so bummed when I found out must have been within last couple weeks.
I love the ouya also. I don't really care for allot of games on the store but I rooted mine and put retroarch, Netflix, youtube and other stuff on it. I have downloaded that ghost n goblins clone on the recommendation of this video. Cool game! Any other recommendations?
John you really, really should use the old intro again. It does your channel so much more justice. You got great topics and obviously a STELLAR collection :-D
At least you're consistent - I've seen you a lot on MetalJesus and elsewhere and you've talked the Ouya up before, I believe. Can't really back your choice but I've heard the emulator capabilities talked up before, so it does have its followers. My choice would be the Wii U, mainly because it's a mainline Nintendo console that never seemed to be given a chance outside of Nintendo diehards and random parents who bought it for their kids, although the GameCube is right there too if you consider it a failure (and it sure was at the time, but not as much of a failure as the U). I'm not the biggest Sega fan (I mostly like their work in one-off instances like F-Zero GX or Super Monkey Ball) but the Dreamcast might be the 'best' choice for a failed console that deserves a look. It was more or less a 'great' console and it was enough of a failure that it took its company out of the console market for good. Saturn too but only if you're an uber fighting-game fan, it could definitely have its supporters, though not as easy to defend as the other ones I listed, I think.
I have an Ouya and still like it. It was an awesome idea and I think it helped refreshing the stagnant videogame scene of the time (yes, a few years ago we only had the Fair of the Yet Anothers. Sequels of spinoffs and spinoffs of sequels), so it wasn't a total failure. The community was great (I still visit the Ouya Forum every now and then as some nice people are still there). I think the Ouya helped the indie scene quite a bit as we probably wouldn't have it as big as it is today, but too bad the hate bandwagon was just too crowded. Many people hated and bashed the console without even having tried it. The "lol its just a fone whit no screan" and "lul it coodn't compeat whit PS360" (it never tried to begin with) are a few examples of how to recognize them. That wise move unfortunately, made some developers scrap the idea of trying to port some of their games on it. Another reason for its failure in my opinion was the shittiest DRM policy ever. The console was practically forced to be online as you wouldn't know which game checked its authenticity and which one didn't. Servers off and the game is gone. Collectors love these things. Made me want a GOG console. So yeah, a good idea, a very good idea, performed terribly. That and the stupid hate bandwagon.
John I still have my Ouyas (standard 8GB and black 16GB versions) and the recent RetroEngine Sigma debacle just makes me like Ouya that much more as an emulator machine. Back in the day I modded my first 8GB Ouya with external antenna (had to solder on the connector and mod the board slightly) heat sinks and even a cold air intake! Fun piece to mod.
John it's so, ironic, that a hardcore collector such as yourself who prides themselves on physical copies would be so passionate about a microconsole, but I think it's cool and unique and what makes you, you :-)
I was in the kickstarter for this thing, and I did enjoy playing with it for a while. It was a decent emulation box, and a few of the games made for it were pretty good. it's been collecting dust for a few years now, though. Was the KS edition really that much different than the retail? I know there was a higher end version on KS, I just have the normal one. My brother bought in at the developer tier and got one of the really fancy ones.
Have you ever tried tge ouya's competitor, the Game Stick? The controller on the Outa reminds me of the Amazon Fire TV controller, which is my favorite blue tooth pad of all time. Maybe i should track an Ouya pad down.
Had 3 Ouya's, the black math version wich i sold :-( now have a silver and bronze kickstarter edition. Still using them in 2018. Love the system, it's small and perfect for retrogaming. Only the controller don't last long and feels kinda cheap imo. Using a ps3 controller on it now :-) glad to see you like the Ouya to John 👍😊 love your vids
I got my Ouya as a gift three Christmases ago. First thing I did was downloaded all of the free emulators from the Store and loaded all of the ROMs onto a USB stick. Then I rooted it and sideloaded the Google Play store, ePSXe, Colleen, and Netflix. THEN I learned about Kodi and installed that. I have literally spent ONE DOLLAR ever on the Ouya, to buy the Nostalgia front end for the emulators and that's it... and the Ouya has provided me thousands of hours of FREE entertainment. All those classic games, discovering old Commodore and Atari Computer games, all of those great old Arcade games on MAME... and then KODI, oh my god. TV shows, movies, LIVE SPORTS, RUclips, Hockey, hockey, and more HOCKEY. Three years later the Ouya is still hooked up to a TV in my living room. Still emulating on it, still watching hockey, still getting endless free entertainment. Legit one of the best Christmas gifts I've ever received, spent exactly ONE DOLLAR on it, ever (unless you count buying a USB Hub and countless AA batteries for the wireless controller). I have newer, faster Android TV sticks now that handle the bulk of my streaming these days, but it was the Ouya that showed me the possibilities, and as I said the Ouya still gets used. Fantastic little silver cube.
wel i ordered one now, only 50 euro 2nd hand. can you tell more about those local video game meetings?? Maybe I like to start one in my place but I do not know what happens there ...maybe you can tell more about those meetings?? or film it??
I love the OUYA too. I wish it was more powerful because some games lagged on it.. But I can play on it for hours easily. It had more than enough fun and bizarre games to keep me interested.
When I made the list of "5 Kickstarter Video Games that Disappointed Backers", I was unsure if it really 'disappointed' backers, but I opted to because it was still a system that lacked the full potential it could have had. But I would be interested to try it, if I had the opportunity, honestly.
I have the bronze editionCIB with 2 controllers. I also enjoy the system for what it could have been. It is also a nice backup at my game club when a console is taking up a tv. I can quickly move the OUYA around and load up a common game everyone enjoys. I would like to get all of the editions as well!
I did a few ports of my android remakes to ouya. you probably class them under the rubbish ones that shouldn't exist LOL, but I was quite proud of my Hunt The Wumpus remake... and of seeing something I had made running on "real life video games console" :)
I never knew that they released the Ouya in different models and I love seeing videos on stuff off the beaten path. I think the Ouya is popular with people who like pick up and play games rather than 100+ hour rpgs. Also at the end of the day who cares what other people think, if you enjoy something then enjoy it and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
I absolutely adore the OUYA. Sure, it's original game lineup wasn't amazing - but the open platform made sideloading Google Play games and Amazon Appstore games on it easy - and it's still my go-to device for Android gaming.
I was a Kickstarter backer for the Ouya. I liked the potential that it had for indie devs. Unfortunately I never realised that it was HDMI only, and I didn't own a TV that supports HDMI so I never even got to use it. I finally got my first TV the other day that takes HDMI so maybe it's time to find where I put this thing and give it a whirl.
I got a kickstarter version on the OUYA, and it has just been collecting dust on my shelf. I'd be willing to sell it to you (for very cheap) if you still haven't gotten around to getting that version. Unfortunately I no longer have the box for it.
Nice looking little system, I just might have to pick one up if I can get it cheap enough to use as a retro emulator, and media player for the TV in my RV when I take the family on vacation since it takes up so little space.
I agree that the Ouya doesn't get as much love as is deserves. I can recommend the Wipeout clone "Flashout 3D" and the quirky "Quiet please'. BTW: There's an enhanced version of Malditta Castilla on Steam, Xbox One and PS4 called "Cursed Castilla EX".
They should of widen Tiger Shark, so the vertical edges can allow more view, that would of been nice for game, looks cool, but can be better if they widen the edges.
And it's console emulators have an easier time running roms than most emulators on PC. I tried titles like Shantae and Popful Mail and they just ran without me having to find certain versions of their roms or of the emulators.
defo the vita for me. its so great and its genuinely annoying to know how no one wanted to give this handheald masterpiece a chance. it really is the perfect handheld
Can't agree more about Meltdown, wonderful game. Real tight controls, skill-based and great multiplayer. Luckily you can get the game on Steam as well where it's still alive and kicking.
I subbed you after watching you on metal Jesus so much john. I enjoyed this video and look forward to watching many more from you!
I loved the Ouya too - primarily because it was not locked down and was the first Android TV device that was designed for a TV interface. Nvidia Shield replaced mine.
Lon.TV commenting on Hancock's page about how the Ouya deserves more love? It's a trifecta of nerd joy for me.
I love the Ouya too. Only thing that sucks is that i got mine from a friend that had an extra main box. so I was able to buy it off of him, but wasnt able to get the controller for it. I would love to have the controller for it so I could have the complete console.

Sega Saturn failed here in the US and that's my favorite system ever
Is not the Sega Saturn is at 3DO?????
Brandonsaurus64 As we've discussed before, me too! It's the only system I keep a stack of in case they fail. Also run both a u.s. and Japanese console to split the usage (and because the Japanese games need a ram cart so having another system's memory is nice since those 4in1s have such shoddy ram)

Rudolf Blodstrupmoen It's always great to hear people are still falling in love with the Saturn
BlurryBigfoot ha I was gunshy until 9/9/99. Then I bought an xbox at launch just because I heard they were getting the remaining Sega games.
I got one for $35 with hookups and controller. I attached a 32gb San Disk Cruzer mini with a bunch of roms, installed some emulators, Nostalgia and I have myself a really handy emu machine. Very convenient to keep in the living room for easy access retro gaming.

believe it or not but the ouya and it's emulators got me back into retro gaming and collecting.

Another great video by John Hancock. His videos really help me out on decisions.
I went through three of those, they malfunctioned and/or didn't want to talk to my TVs over HDMI and got replacement units thrice. Still have mine hooked up.
The best thing about the ouya is the retro games, like Nes,Sega Masters,Sega Genesis,GBA,GB&GBC,and more.
Cool video! I really enjoy everything you and Metal Jesus do, keep up the great work 😄

I love how happy you are in this video! 👍
it was so chilling to watch you play on the ouya. i think you should do more gaming with commentary

Well, forge TV pretty much IS the next Ouya. Razr bought the company, killed off the Ouya and moved the games marketplace over to their Forge TV.
I have one and LOVE it. I use it as a media box more than anything. A PS4 remote box for my second living room more than anything
I had the OUYA. It was alright. The controller felt a little cheap and taking off the hand grip covers to replace batteries on it could be a pain. I mostly use it for Emulation. I backed the OUYA and loved it. What bothered me was that they did not follow through on allowing the Play Store access.
John's smile has a smile of it's own.
Thanks for the Video, makes me want to find one now. Awesome!

"Nothing to separate it from the Wii."
That's what I always figured. (I don't own one) Basically a portable/handheld Wii, right?
Mark my words... Wii U will be the hot collector item here in about 10-15 years.
VITA foreverrrrrrrr
definitely my favourite failed system!! love my games, love the system, should have done well but didn't making it the most underrated system of all time!
thegamingphile except Vita is still going strong...
thegamingphile vita is life. make sure you pick up severed this month if you have plus
In japan it is. I only have one because of henkaku but i wouldn't say that makes it not a fail.
You must not be into role playing as a japanese girl then.
Love this haven't even heard of a ouya until I watched this. I want one now it looks awesome
What's a good app to run PS3 controllers via Bluetooth on an Android system like an Outside, Shield, or MiBox? Sixaxis doesn't like mine
"I use my Ouya quite a bit." LOL! That strikes my funnybone!
That and the stupid hate bandwagon.
that Eternal Champions artwork looks amazing.
I don't think I'm convinced but appreciate seeing the system function.
Hey John do you know if the Ouya ever got a European release? ive never seen one over here.
Loudest controller ever! lol
John it's so, ironic, that a hardcore collector such as yourself who prides themselves on physical copies would be so passionate about a microconsole, but I think it's cool and unique and what makes you, you :-)
Did you play Organ trail for the Ouya? that was a really fun game you might like.
My fave failed console is the virtual boy.
My brother bought in at the developer tier and got one of the really fancy ones.
were u and usc recently. i'm asking because i thought i saw you on a field trip
Totally agreed for me too! The Ouya is amazing. Just sad they're not supporting it much anymore
Very interesting never heard of this console before thx for tha knowledge and info
wel i ordered one now, only 50 euro 2nd hand. can you tell more about those local video game meetings?? Maybe I like to start one in my place but I do not know what happens there ...maybe you can tell more about those meetings?? or film it??
that title makes a lot of sense
I love the OUYA too. I wish it was more powerful because some games lagged on it.. But I can play on it for hours easily. It had more than enough fun and bizarre games to keep me interested.
Thanks John, I might have to buy an ouya
I'm thinking about picking one up, mainly to emulate Mame. It seems like an easy option?
Yes, MAME works well on it. Ouya is great for emulation.
You put in the effort, and that's what counts :-)
i stuck a hunt the wumpus style game i made on there too haha :
Hey, John. Out of curiosity is your OUYA still up and running?
I never knew that they released the Ouya in different models and I love seeing videos on stuff off the beaten path. I think the Ouya is popular with people who like pick up and play games rather than 100+ hour rpgs. Also at the end of the day who cares what other people think, if you enjoy something then enjoy it and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
The Ouya is underrated. Only thing is I rather have a moga controller than the default controller it comes with. Also one hell of a emulation box
If I ever see one dirt cheap somewhere I might pick up and fill it full of roms.
I absolutely adore the OUYA. Sure, it's original game lineup wasn't amazing - but the open platform made sideloading Google Play games and Amazon Appstore games on it easy - and it's still my go-to device for Android gaming.
I love the Ouya, great vid. Most poeple don't agree still i think it's a nice little box filled with lot's of gaming fun.Gotta sub now :-) grts
Pretty cool system. I might get one.
Does the console lag very badly, what framerates are you able to sustain?
It's worth getting one for the emulators alone.
Yes it is. Great way to play homebrews too.
Barnacules would be proud, he owns this thing too.
I got a kickstarter version on the OUYA, and it has just been collecting dust on my shelf. I'd be willing to sell it to you (for very cheap) if you still haven't gotten around to getting that version. Unfortunately I no longer have the box for it.
do they still put new games on it?
a quick fact the ouya works great with x box 360/ps usb controller .
Nice looking little system, I just might have to pick one up if I can get it cheap enough to use as a retro emulator, and media player for the TV in my RV when I take the family on vacation since it takes up so little space.
I've just realised you sound exactly like John C Reilly
Dude was just thinking that.
I'm not a gamer at all. But I've seen a lot of praise for this consol. At least during the kickstarter.
is this console release before xbox one and ps4?
They should of widen Tiger Shark, so the vertical edges can allow more view, that would of been nice for game, looks cool, but can be better if they widen the edges.
Never owned an OUYA so I cant really rate it but I want one, does any one know where I can get one? I have wanted one since 2015. Please Help Me
I still have my kickstarter ouya and while it had MANY shortcomings, I still think it's a nice little console.
