Just got my xbox done with emulation and I love it.....I keep it in my bedroom and all my other systems are in my man cave. It doesn't hurt anything, more people are collecting retro games now then they were 10 - 15 years ago.
I'm not usually a commenter, but love you gamester, have been into your videos for a while now. just wanted to say thanks for the awesome content over the years.
I modded my Wii to play all those emulators and made backups of all my Wii and Gamecube games... Thousands of games... For that reason alone, I'll never get rid of it... Side note: AvP arcade is seriously my favorite arcade game ever... Myself and my kids play that non-stop on our Mame machine... Nice to see the Ouja handling all of that...
I can't get enough of this video, you're the only one who ever said anything nice about the Ouya, you seem to have a very optimistic outlook on life and that's good,I had no idea the Ouya was so versatile.
The Ouya is a decent emulator box. Surprisingly, I also highly recommend an Amazon Fire TV. I grabbed a bunch of the Stick versions when they were on sale for $20 each. They have quad core processors and play N64 and PSP games very well. I mostly bought them to use KODI on it (formally XBMC).
I love emulation. I've been exposed to so may great games, for systems that I'd previously either never heard of! Emulation also made it possible for me to once again enjoy DOS classics.
Thank You! It's good to see someone who doesn't knock the Ouya. I've had mine since retail units came out at Best Buy and it's gotten so much use since then. I also love to use Kodi on mine.
The new look is nice man. I like the commitment. When I start losing my hair, or if I lose my hair (my genes give me about a 50/50 chance), I'm just gonna shave it all off too.
+Rymdkakor As someone who's gone through that process, I felt the same but you find yourself wondering where exactly you should draw the line, and that line just keeps retreating faster than your hair line lol Eventually the decision is made for you one way or the other, though, and you find that it mattered a heck of a lot more to you than it did to anyone else.
If you buy the old games (if you can even find them), that doesn't support anyone at this point. None of that money goes to the developer or publisher or anybody like that. Emulating does as much economic "damage" to the original developers as the secondhand market does - which is less than zero. An active secondhand market has, in every industry ever, massively increased the amount of sales of new products. Take movies for example. VCRs were in practically every home in the 1980s. But the secondhand market for VHS movies was quite small due to the fact that VHS tapes degrade in quality with playback. As a consequence, when people did buy movies, they bought them new. Which, of course, meant paying a high price. That made buying a movie a luxury purchase. And so people did it very rarely. Home movie sales were pretty small, and most people didn't own more than a handful of movies, they mostly just rented them or used their VCR for timeshifting TV. Then DVDs came around. Despite the ardent attempts of the movie industry to make the secondhand market for DVDs either illegal or impossible (with technologies like Divx), they failed and a secondhand market got HUGE. Because there was no quality degradation to worry about, people could pretty confidently buy used copies of movies. Dim-witted movie companies saw this as a terrible thing that cost them money, but there wasn't much they could do. They didn't have too much time to worry about it, though. They were too busy counting all the money they were suddenly making from home movie sales. New movies on DVD weren't significantly cheaper than movies on VHS were... so what happened? Why did people suddenly start buying new movies in droves? It was because of the secondhand market. They got used to getting new movies to watch regularly. They got used to curating a personal library of movies. Their friends were doing the same thing, getting exposed to a much larger number of movies than happened with VHS movies. And they talked about those movies. Which drove sales. People who didn't buy movies at all on VHS because of the cost got into the secondhand DVD market and eventually started becoming customers for new movies too, because they also got used to this experience of having their own copy and of being active in the market. It became a habit. There is a fundamental difference between buying things as a habit, and buying them as a luxury purchase. If you have any brains at all, you want to be in the 'habit' market, not in the 'luxury' market. If you spend all your time wailing and gnashing your teeth over all those sales on the secondhand market where you didn't get a cut, you're basically just lusting after getting your lifeline cut off. The videogame market is currently almost entirely in the 'luxury' category (for major publishers who sell at retail). And they're making it worse as time goes on, especially on consoles. They're doing many things to destroy a secondhand market. And gamers are by and large perfectly fine with this. They think, for some braindead reason, that a secondhand sale should have to cut the original seller in. Which is a stupendously idiotic idea. If they were smart, they would stop wasting time and money trying so hard to make it impossible to buy and sell used games and start encouraging it. It would drive sales of their new titles. On the PC, they should tell Valve to implement ownership transfers for games so that users can give or sell their games to their friends or trade them. Eventually the courts are going to force them to do this anyway. They have in every single other industry in history, and there's nothing special about games that should exempt them from the First Sale Doctrine and other basic property rights given to consumers. They're just in this temporary time period that's longer than any other industry ever had because gamers won't stand up for themselves and sue for their sensible rights.
I love Goldeneye so much, I think about it every time I see a security camera. I modded my Wii and PSP to play every game as well and I still collect tons of physical games.
We actually did a panel at last year's Game On Expo on how to build an arcade with the Raspberry Pi at the core. It is pretty similar to this type of build, but a little more robust and versatile. I collect retro games, but I think that emulation has its own merits and can be a rewarding experience in most custom build outs.
I have two modded Xboxs and I Love having retro games on my Original Xbox but I hardly play them! I would rather play a physical copy of a game on a original console. Happy Birthday John! :)
Bought my first ouya just a few weeks ago. Great for playing emulated games. I really love it. Emulation's not perfect at all times but it makes a lot possible that otherwise wouldn't be.
Gamester81 no problem man. I personally use the nvidia shield TV for emulation. Hard to have all my consoles in the entertainment center at the moment xD
It's kinda rare to see someone talk positive things on Genesis, here in Brazil both SNES and Gen are popular on its era. I'm a Sega fan boy but loves the old Big N too. Nice vídeo!
Looking good bro, I'm 25 and I am already starting to see my crown go very light, I will be bald by thirty probably :P , not bothered though :) You rock the look John!
+GamingTutor Have you tried finasteride? It is really cheap, if you get the 5mg pills and break them into fourths. It is effective in slowing down hair-loss in about 84% of men. It can have side-effects; however, if you are one of the 84% and you don't get any side-effects, then I think it is well worth it. You want to have your hair for as long as possible.
+Stephen Wright LOL! Well, when it ultimately comes to that point, then I will, However, given that finasteride only costs about $0.15 per day - and that I have experienced no side-effects - I will at least do that much to delay the inevitable. However, I will not bother with rogaine, laser hats, plugs, transplants, toupees, etc.
I'm 10 years older than you and I have all my hair and then some! Ahahaha!!!!! Na na na!!! Okay now watch all my hair fall out because of this comment. =)
Great vid man! I love my Xbox hacked with similar apps! Fav Snes game as you asked , between three super Mario world , street fighter 2 turbo or Actraiser!
So many great games on the SMS and you picked ALF! ;) hehe I love the SMS for games such as Shinobi, Rampage, Choplifter, Alex Kidd, Fantasy Zone, Wonder Boy III, and Phantasy Star.
Middle of the road on this issue, as well. Always want the physical copy and not a fan of digital only download. However, with space being more of an issue then ever, I really do see a great advantage in having it all inside a couple square feet of physical storage and easily accessible via a menu. The perfect balance between retaining local access (no cloud servers) and avoiding rooms full of physical clutter.
The Wii emulatio is way beter as you said about half the games dont work on ouya, but I have yet to have an emulation game on the Wii not work (For SNES, NES< genesis and TG16)
Just get a Raspberry Pi for $35. Raspberry Pi 3 is out and is far more powerful than the Ouya. Then load Retro PIE on it which has evey emulator out there for PC and can even run Dreamcast emulator better than Ouya can. Ouya's N64 emulator sucks, I have a Ouya since launch so I know.
I'm a fan of emulation. I'm disabled and some controllers are near impossible for me to use but with emulation I can map keys on my keyboard, or a controller I can use and it's opened up a lot of games, especially retro (SNES, Saturn, etc...). So yeah, I'm a fan.
From a practical standpoint. Not everyone has the money or space for a real-world retro games collection. In that situation, emulators are perfect. :-)
Sorry to hear about your hair-loss. I am getting on in years and have notice the gradual thinning of the hair on my scalp. I take finasteride, to put a break on it, but it hasn't helped much. A grown man wearing a cap sort of gives it away that he is losing his hair, so it is cool that you are confident enough in yourself to no longer wear a cap. Your darker skin-tone goes well with a shaved head. Pasty white folks with dark hair (i.e. I) have a harder time facing the battle of the bald. I am just glad that Trump is making comb-overs great again. Regarding the Ouya, was there ever any real point to it besides emulation? I think most people bought it to play ROMs and never bought any of the titles released for it.
I understand the old style sticking with what you hade as a kid. but with emulation it improves game quality you can use it on newer tvs and I do not have to go threw every game I have to find the game I want them have to get out the system and hook it up incert the cart or cd to play for a houre or so then have to repack everything away.
I use my Ouya everyday on my not-so-smart TV. Mostly i use it to stream movies from my Plex server, Netflix and game emulation. Also there are some really nifty games exclusive to ouya.
I also have the OUYA, but I've got rid of the OUYA OS (Since it's being discontinued anyways) and replaced with a Cyanogenmod version of tablet Android OS and boy I'm enjoying the OUYA way better than before. I'm also able to use Netflix and other streaming services which are awesome to have in an old LED Non_SMART 32in TV.
I loved that alien vs. predator game!!! I would buy it just for that and the Arcade games. Are there any other systems out there that does the same thing in having all the older game systems?
John, Amazing video on the Ouya. Great game play footage. I need some suggestions or guidance on emulators and Roms. Where might I be able to find some of them and what do I need to download them ? Thank you for any help you can give. Have a great Easter weekend also.
Me personally, I'm no purist. there is VASTLY more convenience and flexibility with emulation. I am speedrunning Mega Man Zero 3, the ability to practice and optimize specific parts of the game with save states, fast forward through the ludicrous amount of dialogue, use a controller that I like, play on a larger 1080p display without a capture card, and stream it is a blessing. I'll eventually run it on the cart, but until I'm confident in a full run, emulators significantly reduce the stress and tedium of completing a speed run.
James Barrett It's easy: download the emulators from the ouya store, then download the roms from internet, put them in ouya with a pendrive and load them with the downloaded emulators
Nice! emulation is probably the main reason to own an Ouya
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games That's why I got mine, haven't even used it though.
John's head turned into an Ouya
lol! I spit my drink out
Just got my xbox done with emulation and I love it.....I keep it in my bedroom and all my other systems are in my man cave. It doesn't hurt anything, more people are collecting retro games now then they were 10 - 15 years ago.
Did you have a ouya under your hat all this time? :D
Looking good with the mr. clean head.
Looks skinnier for some reason
I'm not usually a commenter, but love you gamester, have been into your videos for a while now. just wanted to say thanks for the awesome content over the years.
It seems like just yesterday everyone was hyped for the Ouya. Today... I completely forgot this thing existed until you mentioned it in this video. ;)

+Larry Bundy Jr Not everyone can have a beautiful head like yours ;)
The Ouya is a decent emulator box. Surprisingly, I also highly recommend an Amazon Fire TV. I grabbed a bunch of the Stick versions when they were on sale for $20 each.
They have quad core processors and play N64 and PSP games very well.

Chapter2.... lol
Thanks for reviewing this its awesome
I love Goldeneye so much, I think about it every time I see a security camera. I modded my Wii and PSP to play every game as well and I still collect tons of physical games.
we aren't worried about the cap keep making good informative vid like you always do :)
Yes! Emulation is a great way to enjoy older hard to find titles. Can you make me an Ouya setup just like yours?
Looking good John, keep producing great content!!!
Long time fan here :D
absolutely amazed seeing you hat-less :)
great review btw :)
much love from Serbia
That is the first time the Ouya really makes sense. ;-) What a cool modification!
+VectrexRoli Indeed, but if you want a tiny system with Vectrex emulation, the Raspberry Pi is a better bet!
We actually did a panel at last year's Game On Expo on how to build an arcade with the Raspberry Pi at the core. It is pretty similar to this type of build, but a little more robust and versatile. I would love one of them , A great way to play a quick and dirty game of your choice. Thanks for sharing ,
Hey Gamester81, have been watching you videos and really like them. Just subscribed!
for the Mario kart 64 it might be the ROM. because the android mupen64 emulator runs that perfect on everything I've thrown it at
+Anthony Alvarez Good to know, I'll try a different ROM.
Gamester81 no problem man. I personally use the nvidia shield TV for emulation. Hard to have all my consoles in the entertainment center at the moment xD
+Gamester81 Yeah, Mario Kart 64 works fine on my Ouya.
Second. Happy Birthday, Gamester81!
+Herkyrulesall thanks!
Big fan of the OUYA because of the ease of emulation. I seriously hope they are able to revive it.
Looking pretty badass, John! I'm not against emulation at all, but always enjoy the original consoles when I can. Great vid as always ;)
Nice video gamester! I've always wanted to do this.. an I am all for buying the physical copy whenever you can. :)
Good video Gamester. Keep up the good work :)
I admit, it;s strange seeing John without his (now trademark) backward hat.
Go for it, brother!
You can use any bluetooth controller on the OUYA, I use a PS3 one :)
Yo, this tiny thing is a powerhouse! I need to get my hands on one.
It's kinda rare to see someone talk positive things on Genesis, here in Brazil both SNES and Gen are popular on its era. I'm a Sega fan boy but loves the old Big N too.
Nice vídeo!
You can never go wrong with some ALF!
Looking good G81! I dig it.
also you can add your own artwork for missing files and toggle stack to eliminate multiple box art. much cleaner
Next up. Tutorial how to take of your cap ;) just kidding love the new older look and keep em coming Gamester81!
I have an ouya with retroarch, kodi, and other stuff. Its all I use. rock on!!
Looking good bro, I'm 25 and I am already starting to see my crown go very light, I will be bald by thirty probably :P , not bothered though :) You rock the look John!

the system looks pretty neat there John. Not bad for ease and convenience at all. I was surprised by you not having a hat as well :)
+lukemorse1 Is Ouya retro?
+Joe Budd nope, it´s only 2 or 3 years old :D
Looking good with the beard & shaved head look! I'll be joining you in another year or two (tops).
So many great games on the SMS and you picked ALF! ;) hehe
I love the SMS for games such as Shinobi, Rampage, Choplifter, Alex Kidd, Fantasy Zone, Wonder Boy III, and Phantasy Star.
i need this in my life
Great video John! Nice review.

The hatless looks good dude
Just a heads up Mortal Kombat 2 and onwards on the SNES remained intact. Only the first Mortal Kombat was edited/censored.
now I actually want an an ouya. this would be perfect for trips.

Hey glad to see you injoy your ouya sir! Ty for letting me have the opportunity to work on it for you! #gameon
Love the beard and the baldy bro!
DIE HARD TRILOGY on PlayStation was a great 1!!
Nice review agent 47
how did you get all these roms? I would hate to download one by one!
me me rom collection
gamesta here looks like a cross between captain rex and lou ferrigno.
I'll miss the icon baseball hat G81 look, but you look great!
From a practical standpoint. Not everyone has the money or space for a real-world retro games collection. In that situation, emulators are perfect. :-)
cool. Great vid

JOHN PAYNE.
Look at john looking even more badass, damn!
The OUYA is an amazing emulator box - and many of the emulators are right on the OUYA marketplace. Other ones sideload perfectly - including PPSSPP.
nice new look with the haircut. looks neat
LOVE THE HAIR JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always wonder why is John wearing a SMUT shirt.
I understand the old style sticking with what you hade as a kid. but with emulation it improves game quality you can use it on newer tvs and I do not have to go threw every game I have to find the game I want them have to get out the system and hook it up incert the cart or cd to play for a houre or so then have to repack everything away.
vorkev1 I understand you pick your bum crack and smell it
This Video made me dust off my ouya
I use my Ouya everyday on my not-so-smart TV. Mostly i use it to stream movies from my Plex server, Netflix and game emulation. Also there are some really nifty games exclusive to ouya.
Thanks. I may have to pull my Ouya out of the cobwebs again.
The no hair look is good on you, just remember sunscreen if you'll be out a long time without hats! Not a joke, the scalp can really burn lol
He looks so different without his hat.
***** I just need to get used to it he looks alot like my uncle.
***** Yea too bad my uncle has not played any video games since 1995.
I modded my Wii the same way. !000's of games on an external harddrive.
crapatron, could share how, do You achieve IT?
I use to play that 007 all the time back in the day
Wow tat Nes BONK is an amazing port!!
I did a similar thing with a RaspBerry Pi =) They work great for everything up to the PlayStation and most 64 games
looks really easy. might need this little thang
Where's the disc-based console emulators?? I wanna see some of those.
I loved that alien vs. predator game!!! I would buy it just for that and
the Arcade games. Are there any other systems out there that does the
same thing in having all the older game systems?
John, Amazing video on the Ouya. Great game play footage. I need some suggestions or guidance on emulators and Roms. Where might I be able to find some of them and what do I need to download them ? Thank you for any help you can give. Have a great Easter weekend also.
SNES is my favorite. Tons of RPGs to satisfy me.
Keep the hat off, brother, you look great.
Lookin good bro!!!
Is there a place to download the files (without the roms if necessary)?
can you do a tutorial on how to mod the ouya to get all the emulators?
+ccateni WAN Damian did this for me, so I'm not 100% sure how to, to be honest.
Gamester81 can you ask him to help you do a video on it?
Gamester81 it would be really cool.
James zilla Why thank you! What kind words!
sweet video. thnx John. I've been wanting an Ouya since it's release. BTW what's the truth about the chameleon?
Great video!
i saw an article on yahoo about a guy named John who was selling his entire game collection. I got worried and came here lol.
Wow, I guess I would buy an Ouya, if it has all those classic games on it! I am still looking for a arcade game emulator
Can you tell us more about the modding that was done? I have an Ouya and I'd love to be able to have all the emulators your have.
James Barrett It's easy: download the emulators from the ouya store, then download the roms from internet, put them in ouya with a pendrive and load them with the downloaded emulators
Stefano Murotto, Is IT enough?
