John, you did a great review of the system. I really appreciate the through explanation of the emu system, as I learned things. I can confirm that the Sonic animated short was actually on the original release. I agree with your final grade and have the same issues with menu, etc. Overall this is a great affordable system that can do quite a bit. They just released xbmc app, which is amazing. I truly believe that microconsoles such as this are future in which we will see more like this.
Just to clear some things up so people get the most accurate info. 1. The OUYA does support USB sticks and external HDD's in emulators and file browsers, just not in the main dashboard. 2. Micro USB is only used if you plan on developing or rooting the system 3. PS1 emulation is a lot better now using a program on the OUYA store called RetroArch, if you don't have a bios its ok as it runs a simulated bios that in my opinion is almost ps1 accurate.
i have had my ouya since last Christmas and i must say that after a couple updates and after a few mods, the system is pretty nice for emulation, ill be honest that i didnt get the OUYA to play the games that are made for the system, i bought the OUYA for the fact that it can run most emulators 100% and it could run XBMC really well with hardware acceleration. im using an old spare 500gb external hdd with a powered 7 port usb hub, and my ps3 controller and its a pretty solid experience so far
i agree that most of the bad press about this system is totally unwarranted, i was bought one as a gift by my son and thought i would hate it, but once i got used to it i really love it. but some things to mention, dont try to use it out of the box update it fully first my touchpad was totally unusable till its second update, and get a better controller, the stock one is like marmite you will either love it or hate it, if you hate it use either xbox360 or ps3, others work too i have one of those android joypads and its great on the ouya. the open source aspect is great for tinkerers, and i really like sideloading and xmbc.
seems to be that this caught on well enough for the ouya 2 to be coming out soon, and thats what i reallllllyyyyyy want to see and how we the gamers will be able to exploit its capabilities : ) btw really great review man, dig the channel!
I have an Ouya, and I really enjoy it. The flash drive and PS1 emulator has always worked. The best part is the games I'm able to play with my kids. Now with XBMC and other Android apps the Ouya has really become my go console. I really believe with community support that Ouya will only improve.
I have an Ouya. Flash drive has always worked, as in it works for thumb drives but bot hard drives, which the ouya team is trying to resolve. still find large amounts of people who who have never heard of it or still think it hasn't been released. Something not mentioned here is that most out of system controllers can pair up with it, as well as you can use phones as controllers depending on the game.
The Ouya does read flash drives, you just need to navigate to it, by going all the way back through the directories then it will be called USBDrive. Also for the N64 emulator you need to change the software function keys to stop certain things popping up, and some games like Perfect Dark will only work when you change the render plugin a different one. If you sideload Astro File Manager it makes it a lot easier to sort out your files and saves you using the cloud for transferring :)
I think it was a fair review. I really like my Ouya for the price, but we can't ignore the flaws! Luckily they've been releasing updates pretty regularly, game releases are accelerating and I replaced my home screen (you can customize it pretty easily since it uses Android). Much better experience over time.
Also you can use most usb controllers, You can use a nes, snes, things took a long time to download because they place a bandwidth limiter on their servers for each client, and no Ouya is not the only one to do this, sony, microsoft and nintendo all do this aswell. This is to avoid issues trying to use it at all when there is too many clients downloading at once.
Totally agree, trough it would be cool if those emulators will have picture & sound scaling sothat it could take advantage of the hdmi 1080p capability.
I love my Ouya, I do agree with you that they need an update to their dashboard to make it more user friendly and also I do not like having no start and select buttons. Also the insta queu thing sucks as well. Everyday I use it though, the more I fall in love with it. With every new update they release, the system gets better, so I'm excited for the future of the Ouya :)
John, sometime a reboot will cause the console to recognize the usb, also I run Mario DS perfectly (if it runs slow restart the game) To organize your folders you can download a file manager app from the store. A big help is to download the amazon store on the ouya, and then you have access to all the other android apps not available in the store. I've had no problem with download speeds.
Great review, sir. Based on your review I may pick one up eventually, I'm not a fan of the whole digital only thing, but there are some cool looking games that you can't get on the other consoles, so I'm sure I'd be happy with it.
Also the issue with the NDS games lagging is most likely due to the emulator software as well. The distinction between the Ouya and the different emulator software wasnt very clear in the video. The emu software can hopefully be solved with updates while if there was an actual hardware limitation we'll be in trouble.
For the PSOne emulator to work you need the bios file in the same folder as your roms. Took me a bit to figure that out, but I've had no problems with it since.
I love your videos Gamester, but FYI, you CAN load roms on a USB drive and have the Ouya read them. You have to go to where the USB is mounted on the system directory, and you will find it.
Notice how Mario 3 had the void space on the left side of screen?? I know Kirby actually looked that way too on the NES. Mario 3 did too? I don't remember that
I own one. The usb thing works now and they continue to improve it often. The playstation emulator works well and the game selection has improved. Controllers could be better. Far from perfect, but very good.
I hate to say that even the iOS / Android devices will work better with a bluetooth remote and wouldn't be as much lag but then again it would be nice to see this get more work and better updates.
I still own all of my original games(Super C, Yoshi's game for SNES, Super Mario 64, ect) and their respective consoles from launch. So when I want to play a classic game, I bring out my old SNES, NES, or N64 and plug it up.
oh! and for a handful of games I found clicking the power button on the controller once works as a start button in a handful of apps. Its not a standard though
It's hard to tell whether or not he knows you can select between the US and Japanese soundtracks of Sonic CD in the main menu. The only music change I've noticed was the removal of lyrics from the Japanese opening and closing songs, probably to avoid paying royalties to the pop group that sang them back in the day. I can't think of any other reason they would do that besides money or an expired contract.
The footage is a little old I can tell as there was several updates to the dashboard. No you do not need a credit card on file to purchase games there are Ouya cards sold at stores such as gamestop and yes you are able to skip that since day 1 unlike what some reviewers lied about just to say something negative to get views. Sonic CD default has the Japanese music enabled by default you can switch the sound track to the USA sound track in the main menu. The ouya can read flash drives...
You actually can use USB flash drives with the OUYA. I use a 16GB drive with mine. You can store ROMs or install games to it. Also, make sure to check out Inferno+. It reminds me of Gauntlet mashed up with Geometry Wars.
The reason why the intro and the soundtrack are different in the android/iOS version of Sonic CD is because it is set to play the Japanese track. You can change the track to the US version in the options part of the menu.
The Ouya was nice and got the whole android tv thing started. Now I can go get an Nvidia Sheild console and totally walk the floor with the Ouya. But I thank the Ouya for getting the whole android TV thing started because it was the first.
A PC to TV converter just transfers the image (mine does the sound, too) from a PC to a TV. That's what I do with my laptop to play games on my emulator. I didn't even know you could just use a regular HDMI cable. I think the point is that you can also use it on older TVs without HDMI inputs.
If you're going to sell out and do ads (which I don't blame you tbh it's money, money's money.) I have some advice. That's a forward slash not a backslash ;)
USB flash drives actually work for mass storage, but the OUYA is very picky about them (out of 6 thumb drives I've tried, only 2 worked). I also use an USB hub (4 ports, active and w/o psu) to simultaneously connect more USB devices at the same time.
The default music for the Sonic CD port on Android is from the Japanese version of the game. However you can change it to the US soundtrack in the main menu.
Since getting the ouya ive finally go to play the arcade versions of strider & ghouls n ghosts. Just like the console versions i die a lot but still had fun playing them out.
I had been waiting for this after i watched part one. Cant remember if you mentioned posting it to your website first or not. If that was the case I am not a fan of that model if it means anything to you. Great video though, very informative. Makes me glad I withdrew my pledge.
I backed the OUYA on kickstarter, most emulators needed to be side loaded and the Controller wasnt the greatest of course this was at the launch of the titles but i didnt see it going anywhere. I liked the concept but at the end i sold it a month after i got it.
If you're wanting to play DS games on your Ouya, get Drastic. It's a flawless DS emulator that's pretty new. You won't find it in the app store, but you'll find it online with the Ouya browser.
btw i have all my roms on a usb stick what you have to do is go to parent folder when your searching for the rom. im pretty sure you click parent folder twice then scroll all the way down then youll see the usbdrive folder click in that and bOUYA theres your roms :D (i have full rom sets for all the emulators on ouya for most the part they work great)
I have it running quite well on Ouya and I have it on my PC running as well. Project 64 will run Conker's Bad Fur Day quite well and Ouya does it if you lower the resolution on the emulator.
I agree the hate toward the ouya is unwarranted I never thought it was a a contender to push market share from the big companies I supported it because it was a great Idea and the ability to stream content play apks from your phone emulate, old consoles watch movies surf the internet its well worth 99 dollars not to mention I'm not a fan of most AAA titles they seem less like games to relax and more like work
John, I don't know if it's yet available for Ouya, but for Android devices there is a really really good Nintendo DS emulator called DraStic. You should check it out!
Fantastic! Most games look and play better than the console versions. I'm actually able to play and beat some games I've never been able to on consoles because of the inaccuracy of some of the old controllers and other issues.
It does take USB flash drives but you need to make sure it isn't formatted NTFS or eFAT but FAT or FAT32. I have a 32Gb USB thumbdrive hooked up to it.
That video was also on the original Sega CD version (at least in the US). You had to wait about 10-15 seconds after the Sonic CD logo showed up before it would start playing (I still own the original).
i use the ouya for emulation and it is awsome, i can play all my games on my flatscreen hdtv and i dont have to switch out cartridges or dig them up out of the basement. way better than the retron5, and cheaper too
I was going to get one to run a webserver and Samba on but I found out it doesn't have Google Play Store and doesn't multitask... you can only run one app(game) at a time... which compared to a tablet... totally blows chunks. You'd be better off buying a tablet for gaming.... any one $100 or higher has an awesome GPU in it that much better than an Ouya GPU.
I use a flash drive to load all my ROMs and I've never had a problem. Its a basic Sandisk 16gb drive. I load it with ps1 roms on my pc and stick it in the ouya, viola, ps1 games on ouya.
It's half and half. You get better speed and whatever on a PC but the drawback is a 19" or whatever picture which whatever the size of the monitor is smaller than a TV these days and Ouya has the TV mode to be able to play it big and be in the zone of the game more which is a different experience compared to a monitor.
Also, check out DraStic for a near perfect DS emulator for Android. It works great on a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" so I assume the Ouya shouldn't have a problem handling it.
Ummm good SNES emulators have been around since the mid 90's, a very good N64 emulator (Ultra HLE) was released in 1999. The Dreamcast released in 1999 for $200 and had nearly the same graphics as the Ouya and in most cases better because of the better developer support.
They didn't change the music in sonic cd. There were two soundtracks, one for Japan and one for b the us and Europe. The default is the Japanese version, but you can change it in the options.
I don't have an Ouya but I've heard it does run. I've also heard it doesn't run in HD though. I'm not sure about that, in fairness, but that's what I've heard. I'd just Google around a little bit if I were you. I think I saw a RUclips video about it once.
For $99, pretty good deal. Although with $8mill, they could of crammed better spec, for longer hardware life. Maybe the Ouya 2, will improve, hope so at least. Still, its a good deal!
The reason the Sonic-CD music didn't sound familiar to you was that it was set to the Japanese soundtrack. You can change it in the options. While the English soundtrack is familiar, I believe the JPN soundtrack fits the style of the game much better.
I would guess that you'd just connect it to your computer like an android phone, and I remember trying, against my better judgment, to get Conker to work on my G2... It's just not worth the frustration, for me. The only game that I know about for the Ouya is Towerfall, which seemed like a top-notch party game.
It does take flash drives. It shows downloads in the play menu. The ps1 emulator needs a bios to run like ALL ps1 emulators. Also, I find it odd you didn't show Tower fall which is the highest rated ouya exclusive!
Ain't nothing wrong with using roms of old school games. They're all out of print, hard to find/limited for everyone to try and find a copy of the original games, which can also be charged way above what the msrp had been, or what not for an old classic cartridge. Some who are collectors are fine to get those while others fine to choose roms.
Dude Battle Kid looks like the character from "I Wanna Be The Guy." Have you played I wanna be the guy Gamester 81? It is the hardest platformer ever. Also for your PS1 Emu you may need the Bios files to get it to run.
I agree with the download management issues but I will say they everything I've ever tried to download was very fast. I bought mine for plex with the added benefit of emulation. Plus for some reason I buy every console that comes out. :)
If your on wifi like me theres no option to change from 1080p to 720p when watching hd videos on youtube when wifi cant handle hd vids it downgrades to 480p 0r 360p. Im thinking it has something to do with the wifi antenna itself or the ouya console shell blocking the signal to a certain extent.
But hey, they didn't changed soundtrack for SonicCD. It's actually original Japanese/European OST, which was different from american one and you can choose OST from menu.
on the OUYA SubReddit i found a NDS emulator that works perfectly called *DraStic*. And last XBMC Got a official release. It reads movies and tv shows off USB devices and runs HD X.264, AAC,MP4,MKV and many others Perfectly :D
Just letting you know geometry wars was not the first to do that. Its more of a sub genera of games with a certain art style that has been done over and over even before geometry wars.
My tv and I am sure many others can also be hooked up to my computer and used as a monitor, so for me anyways the buying a cheap controller and downloading emulators is a better option then buying the Ouya. But I agree if your tv cant double as a monitor then its definitely half and half.
John, you did a great review of the system. I really appreciate the through explanation of the emu system, as I learned things. I can confirm that the Sonic animated short was actually on the original release. 60K subs.

USB Flashdrive can now be used. Best option for managing game folders and saves your space on the system. I love the Ouya... If only for emulation.

Gamester81 is a real gamer. This is the best and honest opinion about the Ouya. i bought the console and love it. Thanks Gamester81
I love my Ouya, I do agree with you that they need an update to their dashboard to make it more user friendly and also I do not like having no start and select buttons. For the PSOne emulator to work you need the bios file in the same folder as your roms. Took me a bit to figure that out, but I've had no problems with it since.
The home button is used as the pause button. Press it once for pause and double press it to take you to the home screen

You were kicking ass at that racing game.
it seems like a cool console. seems like it could really open some doors towards a new market.
The default music for the Sonic CD port on Android is from the Japanese version of the game. However you can change it to the US soundtrack in the main menu.
Since getting the ouya ive finally go to play the arcade versions of strider & ghouls n ghosts. Just like the console versions i die a lot but still had fun playing them out.

its awsome, i love it
Please don't.
I really like it
btw i have all my roms on a usb stick what you have to do is go to parent folder when your searching for the rom. im pretty sure you click parent folder twice then scroll all the way down then youll see the usbdrive folder click in that and bOUYA theres your roms :D (i have full rom sets for all the emulators on ouya for most the part they work great)
Boughten?! I love it. That slips out in my speech here and there. I have an excuse: born/raised in Pittsburgh and we have our own language!
The emulators make this tempting as a console that's easy to pack on road trips. The price is right for that.
You can change the soundtrack in Sonic CD. The opening song doesn't have any lyrics because of licensing issues by the way.
bro, the advert was part of his video..! No adblock can delete part of videos, only monitor where the videos come from and sort out commercials.
Got to get one of these
Have you guys been using the OUYA since you guys got it and used it over Xmas 2013 ?
Nice review, thanks for uploading the videos from ouya now i want one because its so tiny and i would like to make my own games for it yep
Fantastic! Most games look and play better than the console versions. I'm actually able to play and beat some games I've never been able to on consoles because of the inaccuracy of some of the old controllers and other issues.
hey Gamster, I didn't even IMDB it. It was Jaleel White aka URKEL from Family Matters, right? Voice of Sonic in cartoon?
Sound is good on this video. Good job.
It does take USB flash drives but you need to make sure it isn't formatted NTFS or eFAT but FAT or FAT32. I have a 32Gb USB thumbdrive hooked up to it.
That video was also on the original Sega CD version (at least in the US). You had to wait about 10-15 seconds after the Sonic CD logo showed up before it would start playing (I still own the original).
there is a setting to change the music from japan to us because we (us) got different music
i use the ouya for emulation and it is awsome, i can play all my games on my flatscreen hdtv and i dont have to switch out cartridges or dig them up out of the basement. way better than the retron5, and cheaper too
do you have to have a internet connection to play the games you download? how much does a game typically cost?
This system looks sweet! Are most of the emulators free?
I was going to get one to run a webserver and Samba on but I found out it doesn't have Google Play Store and doesn't multitask... you can only run one app(game) at a time... which compared to a tablet... totally blows chunks. You'd be better off buying a tablet for gaming.... any one $100 or higher has an awesome GPU in it that much better than an Ouya GPU.
***** No membership?
Fees?
***** Thanks! Im still considering this system just for emulators. I'd rather play on my TV than on a tablet or pc
I use a flash drive to load all my ROMs and I've never had a problem. Its a basic Sandisk 16gb drive. I load it with ps1 roms on my pc and stick it in the ouya, viola, ps1 games on ouya.

The voice of Sonic was Jaleel White (Or however you spell his name) who played Urkel.
Also, check out DraStic for a near perfect DS emulator for Android.
It works great on a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" so I assume the Ouya shouldn't have a problem handling it.
Sonic CD had two versions of the soundtrack, you can switch from the US and Japanese soundtrack from the options menu!
I think that Ballistic game is more like Geometry Wars on XBox Live rather than Asteroids. Both those games are extremely fun and addicting.
5:11 this game reminds me of super sprint. what a fun arcade game that was
Ummm good SNES emulators have been around since the mid 90's, a very good N64 emulator (Ultra HLE) was released in 1999.
I have all of my roms on a usb drive and it work fine. You just have to navigate through the the file manager in the emulators.
I love my ouya. Small box, lot's of games. But you really need a 360 controller.
u got a vaca jairo
The reason the Sonic-CD music didn't sound familiar to you was that it was set to the Japanese soundtrack. You can change it in the options.
While the English soundtrack is familiar, I believe the JPN soundtrack fits the style of the game much better.
Also, from what I read I thought the download queue now shows in the Play section.
Urkel (Jaleel White) = Sonic. I've heard different opinions of the Ouya. It's an interesting concept. We'll see how well it does.
I would guess that you'd just connect it to your computer like an android phone, and I remember trying, against my better judgment, to get Conker to work on my G2... It's just not worth the frustration, for me. The only game that I know about for the Ouya is Towerfall, which seemed like a top-notch party game.
Do the system emulators come standard on the system, minus the games?
Very helpful review, thanks a lot!
Do u know where I can get GAMECUBE DISC HOLDERS mr.gamestop81
If your on wifi like me theres no option to change from 1080p to 720p when watching hd videos on youtube when wifi cant handle hd vids it downgrades to 480p 0r 360p. Im thinking it has something to do with the wifi antenna itself or the ouya console shell blocking the signal to a certain extent.
you can download ps1 roms online. as well as the bios. those together will get it to work.
The system has supported flash drives for external storage for months now.
Is there anywhere else that you can find the game Chrono Blade?
Jaleel White (Steve Urkel) was the voice of Sonic, right?
Are the emulator games included with the emulator or do you need to find all the games yourself?
Hey Gamester81, would you happen to know if you can use the PS3 controller via bluetooth for the OUYA?
