I've had one for 12 years so I guess I've given myself time to form an opinion on this bike. I also own Japanese bikes so perhaps I can provide a more balanced comparison than some people.
    Pros
    1. Aesthetics - it's simply a beautiful bike
    2. Shaft drive (no need to oil/clean the chain every day on a long trip) - BMW almost have exclusivity here particularly since Honda stopped making the ST Pan European and the Deauville. The Goldwing is bigger than my house, and the sitting position on the FJR is too forward leaning for me.
    3. Boxer engine - again, only BMW provide a good choice in their R range if you absolutely want a boxer engine.
    4. Exclusivity - everyone and his brother has a Honda; the European brands are more exclusive.
    5. Heritage - European bikes have history, if that is important to you.
    6. Electronics, if you're into that kind of thing. On the BMW, the suspension can be adjusted on the fly and the Automatic Stability Control (ASC) is very effective in keeping you out of trouble.
    7. Decent tank range (almost 300km even in trafficked areas).
    8. Its build quality (as distinct from reliability) is way ahead of Japanese bikes. I've owned this bike for 12 years and the only corrosion I have is on the nuts and bolts - exhaust and tank are still pristine.
    Cons
    1. Insanely expensive, both to buy and to maintain. If you're not enamoured of its looks and prefer chain drives or are ambivalent about the type of engine, it will always make sense to buy a Japanese bike at a third of the price.
    2. Reliability is not as bad as some BMW haters insist (most police forces around the world clock hundreds of thousands of kms on R1200RTs) but I believe that they still lag behind the Japanese on the reliability front.
    3. The engine can be a bit coarse and the idling rough especially at low RPMs (below 3,500).
    4. Electronics - (I know ... they're in the pros as well). Europeans are more innovative than the Japanese [who are inveterate followers] and tend to launch new features earlier making them more prone to failure). Electronics take away the raw, pure, pleasure of riding a simple, uncomplicated motorcycle (e.g. Royal Enfield Hunter, etc.)
    5. Accessories also are insanely expensive - a BMW luggage kit can cost a couple of thousand euros and even the diagnostic tool put me back €600.
    6. The owner's manuals are excessively complicated. The full version of the alarm manual (yes, just the alarm manual) runs to 44 pages!!!!!!!) Over 12 years, I never learned how the alarm works and prefer to keep it off.
    Conclusion
This bike was introduced in 2006 and I immediately fell in love with its looks. It was only in 2011 that I saved enough to buy it. If, like me, you simply must have this bike because of its looks, boxer engine or shaft drive, and can afford it, go for it. If this is not the case with you, and you are not too impressed with history and heritage, you have four choices: Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki or Kawasaki. Ride safely!

Got mine since 2014 and did 30k km. Reliability is perfect, electronics also.
Stuff is expensive but you get some back if you sell it.
Design of the tank is a way to German in my eyes. R 9t is,more sexy.
Driving is,still very nice. Low revs can be a bit rough though - the engine may start to rattle - compared to a japanese 4 cylinder but I like it, also the slight vibes.
What one has to test: drive train reactions when you turn the gas and let loose - more intense compared to a chain drive.
The suspension is fine but the ESC adjustment is not realy remarkable different between comfort and sport.
On the last version they deleted tank and oil temp status! Reason is that it wasnt possible to build a working tank status module in the tank. The piezo element or what ever never worked for long - so they left it out and also oil temp. This,is a thing a hated on a 14k € bike.
But I love my bike and would recommend it, even if I drove it much less the last 5 years 😅

I own a 2012 R1200R Classic and they are an exquisite motorcycle. Mine has ESA ABS heated grips and full touring gear. It's fast, reliable and one of the nicest multi purpose motorcycles out there. It's also incredibly well made. You can ride this pretty much most places with care. Or you can ride it really fast on mountsin roads. But if most of your touring is going to be real off road or technical stuff there are vastly better bikes for that which are lighter, smaller, cheaper and have suspensions designed for that purpose. It is a great motorcycle and the 2011 onwards has both the better 4 valve engine and the brilliant telelever suspension. But make no mistake, this is a complex BMW which demands good competent servicing and treatment. It isnt a cheap bike. I have owned mine since new and its still imaculate. Proper servicing is IMO essential.

I just road my 2014 R1200R fully loaded with top case, side panniers, crash bars, and windshield across 6 states and over 3,000 miles. We road the 101 from Sequim, Washington to near Monterey, California to get home. I added bar risers, about 2 1/2 inches to bring the bars up and back. This bike is amazing. It just loves to be ridden and is happy when you take it out. Really just an all around cool looking and easy riding bike. Five stars from me. I love all the BMW bikes and wouldn’t mind having two or three different kinds. How many bike should one own….? One more than you already have.😉

An excellent honest road test as always. I hate BMW's. As an ex-genuine Adventure Rider I lost count count of the number of breakdowns of all types that caused me so many problems as I fell into the 'Paris Dakar' reputation they really do not deserve. Try picking one up in deep mud at sub-zero temperatures in South America or 35+ degrees in Fesh Fesh (fine dust) in Africa, both miles from nowhere on your own when completely exhausted with zero passing traffic for days. Or breaking down with the clutch gone 100 kilometres from the nearest village and when you finally get there (3 days, one walking, two in the back of pick-ups, and no competent mechanical help there or for 900 kilometres. By the way......the whole of the back of the bike has to be dismantled to change the clutch, 10 hours labour. My GS1200 is probably still where I left it in Southern Iran.
Having said that, I still have a 2011 R1200R in white which I love! Call me crazy (OK I am) but I really like it and can change a clutch as at home with the right tools. I have a carbon Remus can on mine which does sound good. Bad points for 'normal use' are rust on the frame so need to use ACP50 or similar a lot and those damned indicators that you will NEVER get used to. Replacement model has 'normal' indicators out of interest.
I also have one of the last (2012) K1300R's which is frankly awesome but if you buy one reseal the rocker covers all the way around as if not they will leak. Other than those two, when you consider buying a BMW, buy a Yamaha.

This vintage of R 1200 R is good value for the money, kind of the used market sweet spot at the moment if you're looking at them. There is a big jump in price (and tech) going to the telescopic fork type 1200R. It's really hard to find videos of people riding them hard or ripping on them a bit. I really want to see some of that because as of now the bike just looks incredibly dull from videos. I love the sound of that boxer and I know it lights the tires when opened up but it's just hard to find!

It's a R1200r Classic design, its has traditional wire wheels, can still fit tubeless tyres (safer than tubed ones). The paint scheme is with a broad central stripe, the black and white colours reminiscent of much older BMWs, and it got a chromed exhaust system and mirrors, and a polished front wishbone :-)

Learn to ride it, they're nothing like riding a bike with normal suspension plus keep the revs up... get out on corrugated and bumpy corners and you can still scrape those rocker boxers as well as leave those litre bikes with their track inspired suspension behind, they might win on nice smooth roads and one's with long straights but in the real world... nah and I can lap SMSP and Phillip Island at sub 1.34 on a RR (riding like a hooligan since 1972.)
