Thaipusam is a "Hindu celebration among the Tamils across the globe to commemorate the victory of Lord Muruga over a demon using a divine spear." It's not the name of the place. She meant well but couldn't explain better possibly due to language barrier. Singapore, Sri Lanka, India are among some of the other countries which celebrate Thaipusam.

Thaipusam actually refers to the month and star that occurs on the day of the celebration. Tamil calendar uses sun, solar planets and 27 stars movements as reference.
Thai is the name of the month. Pusam is the name of the star that coincide on this day. It's the day when Parvati, lord Murugan's mother bestowed him with a spear that can kill Surapadman, a demon.

And people across religions and races visit and partake. Big up to Malaysia on how they respect and welcome all. In my mind I rate it as the best place in the world and a large part of that is becos of its people. Il be back every year hopefully.

Brother first of all thank you visiting Malaysia and promoting our nation. Secondly thank you for visiting Batu Caves during Thaipusam and my sincere appreciation for you for showing respect to our tradition by removing your shoes when entering into all the temple. I would say that you were so lucky to witness the deity Lord Murugan so near at the main temple in the cave. You were so blessed too to witness the arrival of the Silver Chariot that travelled more than 19 hours into Batu Caves. Upon the arrival of the chariot, a huge flag with a rooster symbol on it will be raised at the tall flag pole near to the entrance marking the official beginning of the religious festival. I remember you were asking about the number of steps and the height of the Lord Murugan statue right? Here's the answer. The staircase has 272 steps and the statue is 42.7 meters tall.
Hope you had a great time here in our nation and at our temple.

Congrats Brad, you managed the monkeys brilliantly on your first attempt😂. They are naughty guys indeed. Anyway, Thaipusam festival is dedicated to Lord Muruga(also known as Lord Karthikeyan), son of Lord Shiva and Parvathi(Goddess Shakthi) where Lord Muruga received the Weapon of all weapon called 'Vel' from his Mother Parvathi/Shakthi. Hence the chants " Vetrivel Vel,Veera Vel, Shakthi Vel,Nyana Vel" which hails Lord Muruga being the mighty weapon "Vel"himself in defeating Asuras or Demons called Tarakasuran and Surapadman. The weapon "Vel" is called "Nyana Vel" which means Weapon of knowledge and wisdom. The concept here is that there is no bigger power or understanding of this Universe other than knowledge and wisdom. Thus, our celebration on Thaipusam, offerings and prayers to "Vel Muruga" the absolute embodiment of universal power consisting purely of knowledge and wisdom.

That time me and my 2 little boys driving together around the city at night trying to find a pop-up stall on the street that selling durian fruit. Then my youngest son see a crowd of people is selling durian but he also said they smashing the durian.. Then i drove by them.. Only to find they just a group of people throwing coconut and smashed it on the street.. It for Thaipusan ritual.
The funny thing is my youngest son still asked them.. Do they sell durian while sticking his body out from the window. 😅
And they all just smile and said we only have coconut. And after that we all just laughing together.
Meanwhile my youngest son still look confused. 😅

He got that VEL from his mother(Parvathi) to win war against Asuras(Demon). In INDIA / TAMIL NADU we celebrate this festival every year because Murugar is god of Tamil. OMG!!! Brad I am so happy when I saw your reply..I have to give you props for being able to undertsnad the accent...its takes a bitc but I think overall Malaysian Indian(Tamil) usually do speak English and not shy even if niot that fluent, as long as they cn help one find their way around.
Thats going to be awesome!!! if you would be there as I have so much Family still there and I will be traveling with my Son for the first time to Malaysia that would be a great experience. My Family and I would love to show you and your Family around. @@ranisidhu8007thank you ! It takes a bit for sure, but I think since I go from country to country often, I’m getting better at interpreting different accents faster! (I think)
Wow that’s super exciting!thank you so much for the offer! I have a wife (of 6 months) but when I do RUclips travel, she prefers to stay home. We do our own vacations in a more relaxing way. When I travel solo I actually move around quickly, record all day, and it’s a lot of work. She doesn’t like that. So next time I’m in Malaysia I’ll likely be alone, especially because I plan to come back and jump all over the country!

Hi Bro., Batu caves have beautiful shrines and you have visited in the right festival time. I think that the monkeys must have seen the fruits which you were carrying. Excellent 🎥 filming and done a great job. By the way the people there speak Tamil which is a native language of Tamil Nadu in India and in Jaffna in Sri Lanka. There are lot of Tamil speaking people in Malaysia and it is one of the official languages in Malasia.👌👍

Hi happen to bump into your video (your first video i've watched btw :) ) thank you for visiting Malaysia and witnessing our festival. Along your video, i notice you got few questions unanswered... so here you go, Thaipusam (Thai : 10th month in indian calender, "Pusam : one of the star in indian astrology) is celebrated as the day Lord Murugan (god of Tamil) got his divine Vel (spear) from his mom Parvati and victory of killing the demon with Vel (also reflects as the sharpness of knowledge and discipline) against a demon surapadman. It is believed that by taking Kavadi (large structure carried by devotees) or paal kudam (milk pot) humans would wash out their sins also for some if their prayers are heard they vow to do so as well. It had multiple believes depending on individuals . Those big structures or building you see before you climb the stairs are also temple of various god and goddess. The sculpture of goddess in black saree (indian traditional attire) with trident is goddess Durga (incarnation of goddess parvati). Regarding the ticket you bought, its to do archanai (mini pooja) and they will give you the offering and there is no entrance fee. Its also optional to give them money not compulsory. The devotees with bald head applied santhanam (sandal wood powder) to cool off their newly bald head . They actually offered Mudi kanikai (cut off their hair) as offering to got similar to paal kudam and kavadi. The deepam (Ghee oil lamp) is lit as an offering to any god or goddess as well and it is not made of wax, the lamp is made of soil and the oil is Ghee oil. The powder that they applied on your forehead is called Thiruneer. You can google about it to know more significant things im just briefly explaining what i could. And one more thing Join your palm and bow your head a little thats how you pray or greet the god and then you can put on thiruneer or santhanam (sandal wood powder) or kumkum (red vermillion powder) or all 3. The drum like instruments is called melam and also Urumi (one of the indian culture instrument). Purpose of the chariot is we are welcoming Lord Murugan who travelled from his mom's (Parvati) temple. The kavadi dance symbolize as celebrating the Lord, those songs is devotional songs. If you stayed the whole day or night of thaipusam you can see whole lot of different designs of kavadis. Hope it helps. Good day to you and stay safe.
