4.19.......the one thing that didn't click for you was the director......I don't think the director got the the epic heights / climaxes of a nolan film.....i thought he didn't quite get the pacing right......you can see what I mean when you look at justice league / vs the snyder cut......same actors, but the story in the synderverse is 100 times better.....I don't think they quite got it right, which made me uneasy......but I did like it.....i didn't walk away saying that was bad.....just i guess a little disapointed with some of the design decisions.......ie a wing suit, instead of the cape.....bruce being the weakest character in the movie......but that could be because once he realises he needs to be hope and not vengeance....he turns the page etc......so I guess it should have been sold as a year 1 batman.....very very rough around the edges....but the movie lacked the fun that the nolan trilogy did right......gordon was amazing, the detective work was great.....it worked, alfred, not so much.....they didn't click like bale and caine did......but I did like the movie......it just wasn't a 10 out of 10 for me
Adam good job, hector im mad you but hopefully after your second viewing you will like the movie mode. Once you accept the premise and concept of this movie which is to show Batman starting out and figuring out the truth and what he stands for and who he is you’ll accept that of course he’s going to be emo he’s not in the right mindset to be the billionaire playboy right now. Maybe I’m the future once everything has developed more
Does anyone else think it's super interesting that Matt Reeves released the first teaser trailer knowing full-well that everyone would lose their minds with the "I'm vengeance." scene, only to turn it on its head and blow people's mind even further by having the Riddler-copycat delivers the same line? The dude is a genius.
The Batman was the first Batman movie that brought to mind the Batman animated series. I loved this movie from beginning to end. The introduction of the batmobile was gloriously monstrous and that chase scene was insane.
I think it was the simple visual of seeing a drenched Batman, in a room, with a flashlight, investigating and trying to figure something out. I love it so much.
Yep. Thats why its the ultimate Batman movie; its so tonally consistent with what are widely considered the definitive representations of the character across various media i.e. the animated series, the Arkham games and the most noir-ish comics like Year One and The Long Halloween. The TDK trilogy never really "got" Batman.
I'm with Adam on this one. The tone was right up my (crime) alley. The one thing I've always wanted more of in all previous Batman films is seeing his detective side. I enjoyed the narration and actually wished there was more of it. I thought it added to the noir/graphic novel feel of it all.
Year 2 Batman/Bruce 👌🏾 Jim Gordon 👌🏾 Selina/ Catwoman 👌🏾 Oz/Penguin 👌🏾 Riddler 👌🏾 Falcone 👌🏾 Batmobile 👌🏾 🔥 The music 🎼 👌🏾 freaking GOTHAM😍 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾 The BATMAN 🦇 was sooo freaking good 😁
@@jaystr I liked Jeffrey Wright as Gordon. He was a good cop in a corrupt system, and a decent detective that really helped Batman when he needed another opinion. We only saw the cop though. Maybe later on we will see the man Gordon, or the father Gordon. For now, he was the Danny Glover to Batman's Mel Gibson if we are comparing this movie to the Lethal Weapon films. He might not be the perfect Gordon, but he has room to grow.
I find it interesting Hector wants to have an emotionally stable Batman. He is a flawed man despite all the good he does. Those flaws lead to Nightwing leaving, the creation of the Red Hood, and hard choices he has to make. His flaws are a huge part of his character.
I think the flaws you mentioned are more the flaws of a parent, which I would love to see someday in ANY Batman film, not necessarily the flaws of an emotionally immature and unaware young man, which I suppose I’m not as interested in.
I see the point but I think there's also ways of writing an emotionally unstable character in a way that you can still connect with them and their emotional moments. E.g. Rue in euphoria, Tony Stark, Bale's Batman
I like Hector and really appreciate his commentary but I've started to tune out mentally whenever he starts talking about Batman/Bruce Wayne or how he should be. 😪
It beats TDK for me. Best presentation of Batman. Rob knocked it out of the park with his stage presence. The batmobile is easily my favorite. The cast was amazing even Colin who i really didnt give him the “chance”. Unseen Prisoner has a great laugh. Best portrayal of Gotham visually. The score was great & cinematography was off the charts.
Glad to know I'm not alone in feeling this. TDK is expertly made and worthy of its praise, no doubt. But I'm not a fan of Nolan's visual style. His Batman movies always felt cold, dry, and sterile. A little too realistic for me.
I think it's a formidable opponent, but I think TDK is a superior film. Not a batman film, but an actual films. The action set peices are significant better captures and actually visible. Take the batmobile/penguin chase. It was so much style that the scene itself was impossible to decipher. It's so dark, and constantly blinding you with light. On 2nd viewing I checked out of that scene half way. Compared to say the Joker/Dent car chase with the batpod. That scenes is incredibly clear. I just think Nolan is a better filmmaker
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way no movie has ever made me feel like I wanna watch it a million times over and over this movie made me feel like I was in Gotham doing detective work with the Batman and oh RIDDLER was amazing. What a masterpiece boy I tell you they three hours FLEW by
Batman is always better without super powered allies. Not team other than who is in the Batman universe. Always feel awkward and campy seeing Batman and Superman.
I think Hector was really just talking about himself there because he has a very (for lack of a better word) sheltered mindset when it comes to watching superhero movies, partially because he's a prime example of how the MCU has conditioned people to perceive any type of modern media.
@bluepearl22 i guess. But how can you really enjoy a movie and appreciate it if you're constantly comparing it to past movies. In this case other Batmen. I think this movie gave me Seven and Noir realism more than anything the Dark Knight did. Ijs.
@@bluepearl_22 I wish y’all would leave the MCU out of things that has nothing to do with them my gawd. The movie wasn’t perfect and when ppl have their opinions you cry
The way Hector keeps talking about Batman (or how Batman should be) is essentially like people who didn't like The Last Jedi talk about Luke which is why it's so interesting to me that he loves that film.
No it's not. It's how people talked about Superman in Man of Steel. With Luke, you were still continuing a story, and then suddenly Luke's characterization changed with no justification. With this, he's bringing in preconceived notions of how Batman should be portrayed.
@@blackmanwithcomputer Yeah losing your nephew to the dark side after your twin sister entrusted him to your care definitely isn't any kind of rational justification... 🙄
The thing about Riddler not being able to figure out that Bruce is Batman: It was reflected in Riddler wanting the new mayor to be shot. He didn't believe that she actually cared about the city - and he was wrong. He also didn't believe that Bruce Wayne could ever care about the city (enough to be The Batman) and he was wrong. It was the perfect blind spot.
One of the things I thought was interesting was the portrayal of Bruce Wayne as a recluse. At this point, he's not even trying to lead a double life. He's all in on being Batman. But in the film he learns the renewal fund his parents started has been mismanaged, arguably because Bruce isn't involved with it. He realizes Gotham needs hope. If there is a second film, I think we'll see the more familiar Bruce Wayne. Bruce didn't know that Gotham needs him and Batman.
Something I really loved about the film in hindsight is how consistent (I found) Reeves was with the placement in time of this story. By that I mean - this is his 2nd year of being Batman, he can't say he loves Alfred yet because he's essentially a youngling as Batman. He's still too angry, he's still exploring the balance of Bruce and Batman, he's still yet to discover how effective "being Bruce" can be, he's just vengeance... like the fellas said, only at the end had he started to realise what impact Batman could have as a hero. It did mean certain moments that could've been more cathartic for the viewer didn't happen as expected, but I think it was a character/story choice from Reeves. I respect that... and if we get a sequel, it could mean really satisfying moments to come.
The first reveal of Riddler was so damn scary! Him just standing there right behind the mayor and watching him gave me the creeps. It was so well done!
Enjoyed the discussion guys I personally loved many things about the movie, didn’t like some of it, but I’m comfortable if Reeves manoeuvres into a traditional story telling comic book movie as he has laid his ground work for his Gotham and characters that live in it I can see myself really loving this movie more and more as time goes on, but maybe not what felt like the contractually obligated “big laser in the sky” moment towards the end One thing I especially loved was Bruce at the end realising that he has to stand for more than fear and vengeance And how for the majority of the movie, his way of thinking and carrying himself has lead to the inspiration of the wrong sorts, (and kind of a big deserved slap in the face of those who believe Batman has to be like that) In fact Pattinson was amazing, I hope they retain that barely speaking, always watching and analysing Batman thing he does. Because thats Batman for me That and the man who carried that woman to safety, that’s Batman Very interested to see where this goes, praying we get Mr Freeze with Christoph Waltz playing him lol
This is a big city... I can't be everywhere at once. They think I'm hiding in the shadows... But I am the shadows. That intro was just sublime! I had the biggest grin on my face the first time I saw it. Great discussion guys, I do hope they let Reeves do what he wants with these characters and don't force this into another shared universe
Anyone else freak out at the cinematography alone while watching? I usually watch these films with my older sister who is a casual fan. I found myself grabbing her arm or gasping to myself during certain takes. I have the same preferences as Adam. I love anything film noir. This take was a hit for me. The runtime didn't bother me and time flew by. I will definitely be watching it a couple more times.
How can someone like Hector not understand that its not the Bruce Wayne he is supposed to be YET, give it time, if the trilogy comes he will grow into it and flesh out the character more and more, he is still a young emo but at the end he gets it
@Schadenfreude same here 8/10, but what detective work? Batman didnt catch riddler or stop.riddlers plan, Nolans batman was a better detective, the movie is bad edited and a good director can take out at least 30 mins off the movie
@Schadenfreude agree with all, the joker cameo was too soon, im a cinephile and this movie satisfied me, when a movie is good i forgive all the little mistakes, for me solid 8/10, ps i dont understand all the people that gives this 10/10 Masterpiece, its like they havent seen any masterpieces, funny shit
Been hardcore Batman fan for 20 plus years now and this movie is what I’ve always wanted! Batman begins and the Batman are now my top Batman films to date!
Just saw it. Hands down the *best* Batman film since The Dark Knight. And damn awesome. - The batmobile is a monster. I love it. - The soundtrack is simple but fully effective. It's genius. - Gorgeous cinematography. I love Batman beating up a machine gunner in dark elevator. - The ending is a little weak but far from bad. (PS I think Pattison can be the next James Bond.)
I'm not expecting Bruce to say he loves Alfred. I don't think he really understands love or his relationship with Alfred at this point. I mean he snaps at Alfred for having Wayne cufflinks. His passion is resolved at the end though so I could see him learning to love in a next movie. I am not a huge Batman fan. And DC frustrates me with their lack of continuity. Joaqiun should be in this universe. Ben Affleck was my favorite Batman and he didn't even get a solo movie. It's like dropping Andrew Garfield's 3rd Spider-Man, then realizing after NWH that he should have got his third - frustrating. Dark Knight was one of the only Batman movies I enjoyed. PeaceMaker had recently put Batman in the shadows on my list of favorite DC heroes. This movie bought Batman back into the light for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though you guys are saying you liked aspects, the tone you guys are giving off is a thumbs down.
To me, the motivation for both Riddler and Batman the entire movie was VENGEANCE!! That’s truly what ties those two characters together. Their both orphans who are angry about their past trauma and have never healed from it. Instead of seeking healing, they stew in it and seek out VENGEANCE against those who they feel have wronged them. Batman’s parents were murdered by criminals, so that’s who he stalks and beats mercilessly. Riddler was failed by the corrupt system of Gotham, so he goes after the city officials and powerful players he deems responsible. Luckily, in the end Batman realizes that pure vengeance won’t solve anything and that hope is the only way to heal not only his broken city, but quite possibly his broken self. Such a beautiful film.
This is so interesting. I truly loved this movie which surprised me because I haven't liked any Batman movie from start to finish, ever. I liked that this Bruce is so reserved, it felt right especially for how early we are in his career. I did cry during the Alfred scene because he is so closed off. I understand wanting him to say love instead of care, but he's not ready to say that yet. But that's what sequels are for, to see Bruce open himself up just a bit more. I loved this cast, I loved the story, I loved the comics it pulled from. This is easily my favorite Batman movie. It was way more than I expected.
This discussion has had the same effect on me that Hector said at the beginning: Many people I respect had issues with the movie that I did not have. Going beyond the whole 'I need validation please have the same identical opinion than me on this piece of art I love', I'll say it mostly comes down to what you intimately believe an aesthetic, and ambient, and the psychology of a character represents. Maybe TDK its a better movie, I think they're too far apart to compared them, but ultimately, I think this Batman it's the true representation of what I think THE BATMAN is: The story of a dark soul looking for hope within himself, and trying to give it to other people. For conveying that, I'm grateful to everyone that worked on this movie. Maybe I'll second guess myself in time, you made some really good points. I don't know about masterpiece, let's leave those words for useless brackets we actually kinda need to leave behind. This movie just hit me.
That’s interesting that you guys weren’t so hot with it. I loved the movie. I think I might love it as much if not more than the Nolan films and I think it’s because I really thought Pattinson did a great job of bringing another aspect of Batman to life. He felt angrier and more vulnerable. This is not the Batman we know yet. I also particularly loved that Pattinson didn’t do the silly Christian Bale voice. That said it did start a bit slow but I appreciate it took it’s time to build a mood and an atmosphere to Gotham. Also sorry Hector but I disliked Afleck’s Batman so I appreciate Reeves taking this in a completely opposite direction lol
Gotta remember that this is still early flawed Riddler, just like Batman he was blinded by his hatred, towards the corrupt, the elite and specifically Bruce Wayne. So when you add up his admiration for the Batman you can see why he would miss that. Also I love how this moment sort of acts as a mirror to Batman, where he’s yelling at the Riddler, telling him he’s a psychopath and all these things and it’s almost like he’s yelling at himself.
Exactly. Riddler is smart but he's still blinded by his biases. In his mind, a masked vigilante who fights for justice putting his life on the line can never come from the elite, upper echelons of society. This is why I think this trilogy isn't done with the Riddler. He has more growth left to do and he would undoubtedly feel terribly betrayed at realizing his idol and the person he hates the most in the world are the same person.
I think something that’s overlooked is Alfred almost dying isn’t for us. It’s part of the arc of Batman evolving. He learned he has someone he cares about that he’s AFRAID to lose. Batman learned fear, and then got hit with fear again when talking to riddler in the prison when he initially thinks the riddler knows he’s Bruce Wayne. It’s quite genius in my mind. Batman is vengeance and puts fear into criminals. He inspires the riddler to also become vengeance and put fear into powerful and correct. Which then bleeds into Bruce Wayne/Batman. This arc was Batman dealing with a version of himself and being absolutely humbled which is a major part of his character arc.
It's interesting to see you guys's opinion, even if in this case i disagree with a lot of them (and that's rare cause you guys are based). I really feel like this was the first live action Batman movie, like 100% Batman, the one from the best comics and animated stuff, loved a lot from all of the other Batman movies but something was always not so 100% Batman to me but this one was, trully a masterpiece and i'm so hyped about this Gotham-verse, really hoping for lots of spin offs and at least one or two Robins with some Batfamily stuff.
I totally agree I watched the movie 4 times and on each successive viewing it just gets better man personally Robert Pattinson is my favourite live action batman period 🦇💯
Loved this movie from beginning to end. A true masterpiece. Btw I loved this channel. I'm glad Adam loved it and hopefully the other two guys come around.
The revelation that "The Batman" has towards the beginning and ending of the third act really hit home. More so than anything live action Batman movie. He has to be more than Vengeance, he has to actually help people out of the flood. Bravo *Lego Batman voice*
The batman was amazing. It was detective comics and has references and Easter eggs for all the characters that connect to the long and crazy history of batman in the comics. He's inexperienced and coming into his own and trying to figure out what he wants to symbolize and represent as batman in gotham city going forward. All the other characters are great in their roles and the story is really well told and is philosophical and thought provoking. The technical aspects of the movie are all amazing. The only flaws is the length in some parts and a couple of editing choices but those are minor issues. It's a psychological horror/ thriller that captures who and what Batman and his characters are in the DC universe. This is The Batman. It's a 9.3 out of 10 for me. It's in my top 3 batman films and I highly reccomend it and was greatly surprised how much I love this movie. I've also seen it multiple times. It's a great movies for batman and comic book fans.
@@solowrldd when i see ignorance or lies i feel the need to bring the truth out, the movie is good 8/10 but not a masterpiece, im trying to help this little boy
@@CoyoteWill664 no one “asked” for your “help”, and I’m a grown man. This film take had a lot of what I liked enough to make it a masterpiece for me. And not every masterpiece is perfect. Joker had a couple flaws, lord of the rings originals had a couple flaws for me, but still consider them top notch. Bye
Completely disagree with you guys. This is one of the greatest comic book films of all time. The Animated Series is NOT the only way the Batman should be. I loved this iteration.
28:28 - the better question here is: would it have necessarily made it a better movie/story to have the background of the Wayne family completely spelled out? I think it was better to leave it up for interpretation because the point is that whatever Batman's mission is, should be beyond just his parents and moreso about the corruption and evil of Gotham as a whole. Although I kinda do agree, they might as well have fully committed to the Wayne family being corrupt at that point storywise
Perhaps it didn’t connect with you emotionally because the two main characters lack emotions(or at the very least suppress them) - Batman/Bruce Wayne and Riddler
When all the other reviews won’t do, you come and check in the homies - always impatient for these takes, thanks for all the content chulos. Se les quiere de gratis!
I love, love The Dark Knight - and just watched it again after seeing The Batman - and it's interesting how dated TDK now looks / feels. Hope this new film will become a blueprint for more like this from DC . . . high on style and artistic story-telling. Great video. Cheers.
This movie had so many great elements and I loved so much about it but I really did not like the cameo teased at the end. Please, no. We do not need another take on that character. I want to see Dr. Victor Fries. That character could be so tragic and brilliant if helmed by the right actor. I would love to see it.
I’m so disappointed you guys didn’t love this movie. I thought based on the premise and the situation they set the film in it’s the best Batman movie we’ve ever had, I think it was such a comic accurate portrayal it was awesome. I love that Batman makes mistakes and will eventually become the better Batman we all know him to be and learn from his mistakes. This was the best movie of the year it will get awards
I'm really fed up of superhero movies that try to become bigger and bigger everytime and fail to focus on the story, acting and themes. This movie takes it time and delivers on all that and that's what made me love this movie.
I watched it in an AMC Cinema in Tysons. I felt all the feels that Adam is talking about when he fired up the Batmobile and all the fight scenes. I can’t wait to get this on 4K Blu Ray!
What’s funny, I was extremely worried about comparing it to the other movies. Once it came on, I didn’t think about the other movies at all. I got home rewatched the Dark Knight because I wanted to make sure my thoughts after seeing were true and not just a case of recency. I liked this movie better.
I really appreciated Hector's review that was still positive, even though he knew the movie wasn't for him. Very refreshing. (I loved the movie as much as Adam btw)
Great review guys. Saw it last night and I absolutely adored it. It’s been a while since we’ve had a solo Batman movie so it felt good. Loved the tone, themes, writing and the cinematography was stellar. I especially loved the fact that by the end of the movie, Bruce realised that he’s bigger than just fear. He can use fear for criminals but he’s become a symbol of hope for good people in Gotham 🦇
Thanks guys. Good review, but seems to me that you're all still processing... And there sure it's a lot too process. It took me a while too, there is soooooo much in this movie. But ultimately, I love it. Never has Gotham looked so intense... R Pat, Jeffrey W, Zoe K and Andy S and Riddler, penguin (aka Farrell) and Maroni, all bring their A game! And then there's that B mobile!!! And and then, the theme (star wars Imperial March version hehe)... Yeahhhhhhhh, I really really really like this movie!
I think it's possible the Riddler might know who Batman is. The whole thing was a tease, he just wants to keep the information to himself and not spill it to the camera.
I don't think it is possible. If Riddler did know, why would he send a letter to the batman in a fireproof envelope attached to the bomb designed to kill Bruce. He clearly wanted batman to recieve that letter.
@@Ryplaysbass Good point. Though maybe it's possible he put it together after Bruce Wayne didn't die. But also, it was the most half-assed of the assassination attempts. Just sends a letterbomb hoping a billionaire recluse reads his own mail? He showed up personally to murder everyone else. I'm not really sold either way, just fun to speculate. And he's the type of villain to misdirect and play mind games so who knows.
Anytime a movie comes out I immediately rush to see what you guys think about it. I know you guys will give your unfiltered opinion straight no chaser. Even if I don’t agree with your opinions I know that it’s an informed one and you all no the source material. I’m a huge fan of you guys keep up the good work and keep doing what you’re doing🤙🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Matt Reeves' The Batman is at par with Nolan's The Dark Knight and even Todd Phillip's Joker. If you think its even better, you are and entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. I'm lucky to have previously read some comic titles that were an obvious reference to this movie, and Reeve's adaptation and interpretation is on-point. And for someone who has seen all Batman movies since Tim Burton's Batman at the cinema, this is an absolutely dark but refreshing take. But like Adam, I'm into serial killer/ detective/ true crime stuff, I guess that's why I just love it. An epic masterpiece on its own.
Being a long time follower of heroes reforged, I pretty much predicted who woulda liked it and who didn’t lol. Anyways I’m glad Matt Reeves stuck to his vision and didn’t try to make a movie that appeals to the masses. Regardless of how you feel about it, you can’t deny that this film doesn’t for a second feel like it’s a film made by committee which I think most comic book movies can feel like nowadays. Loved this movie and gets better with a second viewing. Thanks for your opinion homies!
I’ve been reading a lot of opinions of The Batman on the socials and one thing I think we should all keep in mind is that it’s ok to like a certain take on Batman and not like another. The great thing about comic book characters that have been around for 80 or so years is that we all have a favourite version of that character and what it means to us. That version will always exist so it doesn’t matter if a book or show or movie comes along with a different take on the character that doesn’t take your fancy. Personally, I really, really, REALLY liked The Batman but I also want a movie Batman where the bat family can exist along with the more extravagant and supernatural villains from his rogues gallery without them having to fit a ‘grounded’ reality. We may not all agree with a certain take on Batman, but we can all agree that we like Batman as a whole, so we shouldn’t be putting people down if their Batman is not your Batman and vice-versa.
Zach Snyder screwed up too by not being able to create a solid 2 hour movie. If you hire a guy to build a 3 bedroom house and he builds you a 6 bedroom mansion, that's his fault. Zach was hired to make a 2 hour movie not a 4 hour movie.
@@NZealand It wasn't just Justice League where he went overlong. He first made the mistake on Batman v Superman. The theatrical cut was a D but the director's cut was a B. So, two times in a row he couldn't contain his ideas into a normal movie size.
Always good to hear you guys talk about films. Enjoyed the talk. I so loved this film. The dark thriller tone is so much how the comics have been in the last few years from scott Snyder to Tom King, I was there for that. And the main 3 actors that the internet was going crazy about just killed it every time they were on screen for me. So I’m down for more please.
Classic example of why you should always go into a new iteration of a series with a clear mind. Matt Reeves stated over and over again that he wanted to tell a detective noir story. The Riddler is better suited for that type of story than the Joker. This story is Matt Reeves story told the way he wanted and I absolutely loved it. As for the Riddler's plan, he wasn't going after the identity of Batman. His goal was to wash the city of those who he deemed corrupt. As the son of the Wayne's that started the renewal project. Bruce Wayne was on the Riddler's hit list.
TDK hit at the right time, the right summer, the right moment, the right cast, the right movie for me to love it over all other Batman movies. But this was like TAS come to life, with issues, but the Paul parts and the Zoe parts and the Colin parts made this movie for me.
I really enjoy this movie, Batman detective is one of my favorite versions so I appreciate that they take the time to make it kind of a thriller. Also music is amazing an Pattinson did an amazing work
Keeping it short and sweet im gonna first off say you guys are awesome and i watch whenever you guys upload your great 👍 As for this movie i felt it was a little too long for me and maybe that's because there was more dialog than action and the balance just wasn't there for me. I loved all the characters and the vibe and the atmosphere overall i just felt some scenes or some situations were a little dragging at times. I do love this movie don't get me wrong even though i still feel TDK is still my bar setter but The Batman is very close. I did laugh @ the scene where Alfred comes to in the hospital and Bruce's first words to him after nearly dying is "you lied to me" 😆 Most definitely looking forward to where this take on the character goes in the follow up
Just came out of the cinema and the Batman was phenomenal. As someone who grew up watching gangster/crime movies this was right up my alley, loved the story so much I didn't notice the three hours. However, I do agree with Hector about the movie lacking in emotion, especially between Alfred and Bruce. Wish there was more, but I just passed it off as Bruce still struggling with creating personal bonds. Either way, thanks guys for the amazing review!
I find it interesting that people talk about these movies and always reference what they wanted to see, and somehow the movie is a let down, or somethings missing. It would be refreshing to hear someone say "Maybe my expectations were too much!" And just except that it was a great film
I think I still prefer The Dark Knight by a bit, but I will say it is better than Begins and Rises. Probably my 2nd or most favorite live action Batman movie. Definitely has the best cinematography out of them and what would I give to see Greig Fraser’s cinematography for a Marvel movie someday. Penguin’s “No Hablo Espanol?” and some of the scenes with Bats and Gordon, especially the thumb drive, had me dying. 😂 Also, not gonna lie, seeing the Batmobile chase sequence made me even more hyped to see Robbie Reyes’ Hell Charger in his own potential Ghost Rider movie someday. Like I could easily see the Batmobile in this movie as the Hell Charger.
This movie was phenomenal. The idea that you guys were expecting things from this movie that wouldn't be feasible at this stage of him being Batman is so weird to me. You guys know enough about Batman to know that some of your expectations wouldn't any sense or a good movie. At least I thought you all did. Remember, it's year 2 Batman. All of this is still very new to him.
This was my favorite live-action Batman movie! I am 40 so I have seen basically all of them, but yeah this one was right up my alley. I wasn't too happy with seeing the Joker at the end, but maybe it was just a little nod and the Joker won't be a huge influence. I would like to see other baddies.
The Director (I think the Director, not sure) stated that it wasn’t a “check out the next villain” type of tease but a more “Gotham is far from peace” type of tease. He might be the third film villain. Also I think he stated that he wanted someone like Mr Freeze as the next villain.
The nod to Joker just had me gasping that Reeves was building the Rogues gallery, especially since they are in Arkham together. I don’t think Joker will come into play until much later if they continue (god I hope they do) with this universe. Reeves was talking about Mr. Freeze and from a questionnaire clip, Pattinson is hoping for The Court of Owls, Dano liked that idea too.
TDK was a better overall movie (because it was more about the Joker and not the batman). The Batman is a better Batman movie, in fact, the best Batman movie yet.
I also liked this movie, but did not love it. The mystery was well done, Paul Dano as the sweet-faced Megamind Riddler was great. I just did not connect to it for some reason.
A fun Easter egg that I noticed....In the riddler video that reveals the Wayne/Arkham corruption, the journalists name is Edward ELLIOT.....and on the riddlers wall of evidence over the top of the journalist’s image he wrote HUSH. I got a kick out of that
I gave it a 10/10! Great Batman movie about Batman! Thank you Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson for giving us this Batman! I saw it 4 times and I didn’t feel the run time because I was so engrossed in the movie! Go see it in theaters it’s a must!! As far as Bruce, I did feel for him and you can see that they had some moments and the moment in the hospital was important I feel like that moment with Alfred in the hospital helped Bruce step back into his humanity because he does love Alfred and he doesn’t want to lose him if there was no Alfred to be in his life to be that parental figure then I think Bruce/Batman would go completely over the edge and lose all his humanity because Bruce died in that alley with his parents and that pain from that trauma drives his Vengeance, Batman is trying to find purpose for his pain! I feel like he earned his arc by the end of the movie it’s not all about Vengeance he has to be better he has to be more, he becomes Batman by the end of the movie! There villains aren’t fully formed yet either, so much growth and potential for this trilogy!
Seems like Matt Reeves did want to do a movie with Ben Affleck. He just didn't want to use the script by him, but in the end Affleck left the project anyway. “It wasn’t going to be another origin story, not with Ben already in the character. But that’s what I would do.” From the Wrap Article
Well Matt reeves stated he wrote the script and movie for Robert Pattinson as Batman before he even casted him because watched a movie he was in so I doubt he really wanted to use Ben that much
Mark 20:04. Okay, you three also thought it was, "The Joker", as I did. But I've seen some that thought it was, "Two-Face". Like maybe, Holden & Jennifer? 🤔 Others too? 🤔 I've lost count. 😕
I share Hector's sentiment about Andy Serkis' Alfred. When the trailers came out, I jokingly commented in some videos that it was the first time that Alfred was just as "jacked" if not more than Batman himself lol At least to me, Andy Serkis did not look "old" enough to be Alfred, so that connection and empathy was probably not there for the audience--he did not feel vulnerable. Sir Michael Caine set the bar too damn high!
What I found an interesting take on the movie, is that we only see the movie through two eyes. The riddlers, and Batman’s. There’s no random scene of side characters, telling us the viewer a plot point. We see this movie unfold as Batman learns it.
Ok really off topic but Hector's glasses do some weird optical illusion with his head and make it look smaller where the lens of his glasses are and now that i've seen it i cant unsee it XD
i definitely agree w hector that i could've used a bit more from the emotional beats but i still absolutely loved this. and i know y'all addressed it a bit at the end but i really am looking forward to you guys digging in a bit deeper on the podcast. i'd love to hear you guys talk a bit more about catwoman, the batmobile, and the filmmaking aspects especially since adam always has lots to say about that. i'm sure it'll be easier to talk about after a repeat viewing and on the podcast when you've got more time.
I would love to see some Batman TAS reactions. At the very least react to some of the more celebrated episodes. As for The Batman, I'd give it an 8/10.
One thing I noticed is that Bruce noticed that in his hate, and his need to be the batman, he has neglected his Wayne family duties. His father's charity was left unchecked and eventually everyone got sticky fingers.
Can't get enough of you guys. I love your debates, they really help me figure out things, and defining my ideas of what i saw. Personally i didn't love this take on Batman, although it's perfectly made. Of course as you said i need to rewatch this to give it a final "score". Keep doing great! Greetings from Argentina!
I think my biggest problem with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, not as Batman, is that he had almost no gravitas to him. In every Batman film or show, animated or live action, even when he is being dour and moody and depressed, there is still an aspect of flair and assuredness to Bruce Wayne. And it's not that I have a problem with trying a new personality type for Bruce Wayne, especially that he's a somewhat younger version then every other one on film. But I just kept having Damian Wayne in my head the entire time that I was trying to see him as Bruce Wayne. Or Nightwing. Maybe the portrayal didn't register on a real high level with me because the whole world was just bleak on bleak on bleak. And I didn't need him to be comic relief, but I maybe would have liked to see "Bruce Wayne" have a presence in Gotham, and not just the same energy as every urchin in the city.
I feel like it was pretty clear that Bruce Wayne died when his parents died. That is the main reason he stay as the Batman the whole film. Bruce is the mask on top of his true form, which is the Batman. Once it come to the end of the film, he found who Batman should be to this broken city, and maybe the next film will go futher into the character of Bruce Wayne, and him finally realizing the true purpose he has for the people of Gotham.
@@matthewbertram4312 but you have to remember he is his early 20s Very early So he has to grow into it I understand what you are talking about But how many 22 or 23 year old people have that
I 100% get where you're coming from and I feel like at this point in his life he is all in on just being Batman. As he states to Alfred "THIS is my family's legacy." I think that at the end of the movie he realizes the price the city and the people pay when he tries to help them solely as Batman and from that point he will start to become the Bruce Wayne that we know.
Really glad I watched this review. Really helped me to understand my own thoughts because I also wasn’t in love with this movie but couldn’t figure out why because there was so much awesome stuff.
I think Reeves left enough room for him to grow..not only in heroism, intellect but also in emotional connection with humans esp ones that are close to him. **hints** why he let Selina go and his disconnect with Alfred. It speaks really true to how ppl deal and even dismiss feelings today. By the time part 2 comes out he will probably be in year 5 maybe 10 because the city has to rebuild in which the HBO series will fill in gaps like how Loki and other shows did for Marvel.

It’s a really well done commentary. Genius indeed
Absolutely. Turning the whole vengeance thing on its head was indeed a very clever approach and a response to the cynical tone of the Snyder movies
Damnnn mind blown 🤯 lol
this blew ya’lls mind?
The Batman was the first Batman movie that brought to mind the Batman animated series. I loved this movie from beginning to end. The introduction of the batmobile was gloriously monstrous and that chase scene was insane.
I think it was the simple visual of seeing a drenched Batman, in a room, with a flashlight, investigating and trying to figure something out. I love it so much.
I got a lot of Arkham video game vibes.
Yep. Thats why its the ultimate Batman movie; its so tonally consistent with what are widely considered the definitive representations of the character across various media i.e. the animated series, the Arkham games and the most noir-ish comics like Year One and The Long Halloween. The TDK trilogy never really "got" Batman.
Hearing that sound down the road as it chased Penguin was mind blowing. Lol
I'm with Adam on this one. The tone was right up my (crime) alley. The one thing I've always wanted more of in all previous Batman films is seeing his detective side. I enjoyed the narration and actually wished there was more of it. I thought it added to the noir/graphic novel feel of it all.

Yeses down the board! I loved it, too.
This Gotham is by far the best i have ever seen. It's feels Gotham. I love it!!
@@bluepearl_22 This version of bruce wayne isn't gonna work for everyone. And that's not to say that they don't understand what they were going for.
in short, double standards.

Agreed. I was never the biggest fan of the DK trilogy but I was really impressed by this film.
The Batman is my Favorite solo film, Ive seen it 3 times and That Batmobile scene Holy Metal BATMAN
Just saw it a second time today on IMAX. It was 10x better the second time, especially the ending.
The scene where we first see him rev up the bat mobile holy shit I jizzed my pants. The sound design in that scene was AMAZING
Batman is always better without super powered allies. Not team other than who is in the Batman universe. Always feel awkward and campy seeing Batman and Superman.
OMG when it first starts up?! Chills!!!
I agree. My favorite of them all. Really stroke a cord with me.
I didn't feel like I had to pretend other batmen movies existed. This movie was so good. I forgot about them.
FACTS 🦇
Yeah I honestly didn’t even think about that until the (spoiler) joker scene.
Maybe people have different tastes and different things they hold dear
No it's not. It's how people talked about Superman in Man of Steel.
With Luke, you were still continuing a story, and then suddenly Luke's characterization changed with no justification.
With this, he's bringing in preconceived notions of how Batman should be portrayed.
Last Jedi was a horrible film to the Star Wars franchise. PERIOD.
@@blackmanwithcomputer Yeah losing your nephew to the dark side after your twin sister entrusted him to your care definitely isn't any kind of rational justification... 🙄
@@djvinas8142 Damn, homie. You're still triggered by THE LAST JEDI? lol
Enjoyed the discussion guys
I personally loved many things about the movie, didn’t like some of it, but I’m comfortable if Reeves manoeuvres into a traditional story telling comic book movie as he has laid his ground work for his Gotham and characters that live in it
I can see myself really loving this movie more and more as time goes on, but maybe not what felt like the contractually obligated “big laser in the sky” moment towards the end
One thing I especially loved was Bruce at the end realising that he has to stand for more than fear and vengeance
And how for the majority of the movie, his way of thinking and carrying himself has lead to the inspiration of the wrong sorts, (and kind of a big deserved slap in the face of those who believe Batman has to be like that)
In fact Pattinson was amazing, I hope they retain that barely speaking, always watching and analysing Batman thing he does. Because thats Batman for me
That and the man who carried that woman to safety, that’s Batman
Very interested to see where this goes, praying we get Mr Freeze with Christoph Waltz playing him lol
How can someone like Hector not understand that its not the Bruce Wayne he is supposed to be YET, give it time, if the trilogy comes he will grow into it and flesh out the character more and more, he is still a young emo but at the end he gets it
Absolutely a masterpiece in filmmaking from top to bottom and the most accurate batman yet.
Masterpiece? How many movies have you watch? 20?
@Schadenfreude same here 8/10, but what detective work? Batman didnt catch riddler or stop.riddlers plan, Nolans batman was a better detective, the movie is bad edited and a good director can take out at least 30 mins off the movie

Totally with Adam on this one. Loved the film and the whole aesthetic. Probably my new favourite cinematic Batman. Big fan.
Its hard to decide if I like to watch you guys or Blind Wave more.

It’s a 10/10 to classic batman fans but not everyone will be into it, it’s okay it’s the batman film I’ve always wanted.

And that’s when the court of owls come in to play. The corruption of the Wayne’s by affiliating with or in the court of owls.
Perhaps it didn’t connect with you emotionally because the two main characters lack emotions(or at the very least suppress them) - Batman/Bruce Wayne and Riddler

I think Hector held this movie to a unfair standard. Its a old school noir detective film with a coat of Batman paint.

This is my favorite Batman movie and Battinson is my favorite Batman
Love you guys! Just saw the movie and so happy to listen to the spoiler review. Great review!!
Zach Snyder screwed up too by not being able to create a solid 2 hour movie. If you hire a guy to build a 3 bedroom house and he builds you a 6 bedroom mansion, that's his fault. Zach was hired to make a 2 hour movie not a 4 hour movie.
Ffs obviously if he stayed on his version wouldn’t have been 4 hours in the theatre.
Adam's correct, this is the fifth iteration of Joker in recent years. Joker (solo), Gotham tv series, Lego Batman, Suicide Squad, and now this one.
Also music is amazing an Pattinson did an amazing work
Do y’all think Matt reeves will double down and make another 3 hour movie for the sequel???
Keeping it short and sweet im gonna first off say you guys are awesome and i watch whenever you guys upload your great 👍
As for this movie i felt it was a little too long for me and maybe that's because there was more dialog than action and the balance just wasn't there for me. I loved all the characters and the vibe and the atmosphere overall i just felt some scenes or some situations were a little dragging at times. I do love this movie don't get me wrong even though i still feel TDK is still my bar setter but The Batman is very close. I did laugh @ the scene where Alfred comes to in the hospital and Bruce's first words to him after nearly dying is "you lied to me" 😆
Most definitely looking forward to where this take on the character goes in the follow up
Just came out of the cinema and the Batman was phenomenal.
Also, not gonna lie, seeing the Batmobile chase sequence made me even more hyped to see Robbie Reyes’ Hell Charger in his own potential Ghost Rider movie someday.
I really loved this movie
TDK was a better overall movie (because it was more about the Joker and not the batman). The Batman is a better Batman movie, in fact, the best Batman movie yet.
I also liked this movie, but did not love it. The mystery was well done, Paul Dano as the sweet-faced Megamind Riddler was great. I just did not connect to it for some reason.
You need to watch it again. It grows on you. I didn’t love it when I left the theater, but man on a second viewing I did!
@@juancarloscampos6067 agree I just saw it for the third time and now I consider it a masterpiece
A fun Easter egg that I noticed....In the riddler video that reveals the Wayne/Arkham corruption, the journalists name is Edward ELLIOT.....and on the riddlers wall of evidence over the top of the journalist’s image he wrote HUSH. I got a kick out of that
Great conversation.
Imo it is the best Batman movie and it is one of the best comic book movies of all time too.
10/10 for me and worth the wait.
This is the most mature and insightful review of this film I've seen yet on youtube. Great review guys!
But that’s what I would do.”
From the Wrap Article
Well Matt reeves stated he wrote the script and movie for Robert Pattinson as Batman before he even casted him because watched a movie he was in so I doubt he really wanted to use Ben that much
@@Roberto-to1li They were given a blank slate after Ben left. So it was that script he was talking about.
Gordon's best scene was "Open Your Eyes!!" when they're interrogating Penguin....chills.
I agree that they should’ve kept Thomas Wayne is also a not so good guy, and it is not Falcone that had him killed.
it's not yet confirmed if falcone had him killed... even alfred says so
It was a simple and subtle thing, but having The Penguin on ankle cuffs to portray a penguin’s walk was pretty funny
They did have scene where in the background atmosphere looked dark and foggy and looked like the OG Burton Batman
@@RequiemKingEdits no, I get it. I wasn't confused about the take at all. I was just pointing out why it didn't quite work for me.
@@matthewbertram4312 but you have to remember he is his early 20s
Very early
So he has to grow into it
I understand what you are talking about
But how many 22 or 23 year old people have that
I 100% get where you're coming from and I feel like at this point in his life he is all in on just being Batman. As he states to Alfred "THIS is my family's legacy." I think that at the end of the movie he realizes the price the city and the people pay when he tries to help them solely as Batman and from that point he will start to become the Bruce Wayne that we know.
@@matthewbertram4312 but your take don’t make sense he only has 2 years being batman
You guys should review Mask of the Phantasm if you haven't yet. I just watched it for the first time and loved it
