From Warner Bros. Pictures comes Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson in the dual role of Gotham City’s vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne.
Starring alongside Pattinson (“Tenet,” “The Lighthouse”) as Gotham’s famous and infamous cast of characters are Zoë Kravitz (“Big Little Lies,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”) as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy,” “12 Years a Slave”) as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright (“No Time to Die,” “Westworld”) as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro (the “Transformers” films, “The Plot Against America”) as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard (“The Magnificent Seven,” “Interrogation”) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson (“Farewell Amor”) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis (the “Planet of the Apes” films, “Black Panther”) as Alfred; and Colin Farrell (“The Gentlemen,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) as Oswald Cobblepot.
Reeves (“The Planet of the Apes” franchise) directed from a screenplay by Reeves & Peter Craig, based on characters from DC. Batman was created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger. Dylan Clark (the “Planet of the Apes” films) and Reeves produced the film, with Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo and Simon Emanuel serving as executive producers.
The director’s behind-the-scenes creative team included Oscar-nominated director of photography Greig Fraser (“Dune,” “Lion”); Reeves’ “Planet of the Apes” production designer, James Chinlund, and editor, William Hoy; editor Tyler Nelson (“Rememory”); and Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran (“1917,” “Little Women,” “Anna Karenina”). The music is by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino (the current “Spider-Man,” “Jurassic World” and “Star Wars” films, “Up”).
Warner Bros. Pictures Presents a 6th & Idaho/Dylan Clark Productions Production, a Matt Reeves Film, “The Batman.” The film is set to open in theaters beginning 2 March 2022 and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

He also embraced the side of Batman that no other real action movie did - the detective. It was a unique angle and cinematography wise. 💪

Anyone that complains a movie like this is "too dark" has a very simple concept of what films look like. I wouldn't even take that criticism as having any merit, since it's clearly based on a very limited experience.

I love that during the action scenes Matt Reeves just held the frame and let the choreography speak for itself. Don't see that a lot in modern superhero/action movies (with obvious exceptions like John Wick).

Great analysis, couldn't agree more, this movie is absolutely excellent on so many levels.
I would just like to add one thing about how the action and more specifically, the fight scenes are shot/choreographed/edited, which is waaay better than what Nolan did in his trilogy with that horrible ''Jason Bourne/ 500 quick-cuts per minute & shaky cam'' style, that ruined action movies since the mid-00's.
The fights are shot in a wide angle with as less cuts as possible, in order for the audience to actually see what's going on.
The choreography isn't too ''elaborate'',no fancy Kung Fu moves, but instead Batman uses moves that are direct and aim to take out his opponents as soon as possible. Batman's opponents are actually fighting back instead of just waiting their turn to get punched and even manage to hit him several times. So, he's not like an invincible, despite his armor & skills, but still vulnerable.
You can clearly see, that the stunt/fight team took inspiration from the Netflix Daredevil series on this, which is ironic because the people who did the fight scenes on Daredevil worked prior on the Batman Arkham videogames. In fact, Charlie Cox's stuntdouble, Chris Brewster, did all the mo-cap for Batman on these games and now the Batman movie is influenced by what they did.
    It's like they came full-circle.

I believe many people cannot (or don't bother to) differentiate between a badly written and a badly acted role - or even between a movie or its protagonist they dislike and the actor playing the role. After watching Robert Pattinson in the sheer intimate madness that is "The Lighthouse", I knew right away that he had it in him to carry the Batman cape, and so much more. I have not seen "Twilight", but I would doubt that it is Pattinson's acting skills most people will find issues with if they dislike the film. And even if they do, I would still recommend to them to give both "The Batman" & "The Lighthouse" a chance and to approach them with as little prejudice as possible. This guy is a very versatile actor after all.

Mr. Tomasso, please do more movie reviews. I really enjoyed your rave review of Matt Reeves ''The Batman'' because you bring such insight and enthusiasm. Your love of cinema is so fun and infectious. For me, ''The Batman'' has become THE definitive Dark Knight opus, and Robert Pattinson crushes it with his haunted and haunting portrayal. I've appreciated so many other fine actors in the Batsuit, but Pattinson is the first one to move me to tears (in his exchange with Alfred) and rivet me with such excitement (with the Riddler). Thanks for giving ''The Batman'' the due it deserves.

I saw it twice now and loved it even more the 2nd time. TDK had a trailer that was amazing and the film surpassed it, which is rare. The same can be said for The Batman. Pattinson totally carried the film with such minimal dialogue. His eyes told this story. I love how him and Gordon are in it together no matter what. The end where he lights the flare then leads the people out of the dark waters to safety was amazing. The closing narration with Nirvana reprise had me COMPLETELY in awe. I was 500% invested.
The Alfred/Bruce dynamic was incredible while being a complete opposite of Nolan's which was also great. This was the Earth One Alfred where he was MI-6 British Intelligence and helped train Bruce and Thomas ran for Mayor before being slain (ordered by Penguin which could still be, since we don't know if Maroni or Falcone did it or if it was someone else or random )

One of my favorite scenes in this movie was Batman's escape from the Police station. When he gets to the rooftop and is about to leap that momentary look of fear in his eyes right before he gathers his balls & leaps was a genius decision. It showed how alot of what was going on was new to this Batman and how at the end of the day he's just a man. Masterpiece was also the word that kept coming to mind while I watched it. I have come up with a 9.3 out of 10 rating for "The Batman".
    Honestly?
It could have been 40 minutes longer to give these characters even more depth!
This one had the best true-to-the-DC-mood character cast in any live action Batman movie ever:
Riddler 💣❔= very dark and disturbed, deeply traumatised terror mastermind; Penguin 🔫🐧 = disfigured, life-hardened macho mobster; Falcone 🎩🎱 = nouveau riche high-society untouchable don; Selina Kyle as Catwoman 💔🐆 = self-made rags-to-make-ends-meet part time waitress / burglar / revenge-seeking tigress with both zeal and elegance; Lt. Gordon 😒👮 = disillusioned, world-weary, hard-headed, dirty good cop; rapid-cycling bipolar, almost suicidal and reckless Bruce Wayne as The Batman 💀🦇 = shell-shocked but highly functional, almost maniacal terror-on-crime warrior running on empty by night + burnt-out, highly reclusive, passive/aggressive PTSD-victim in denial during daytime.
    All in all:
Greatest ALL-PSYCHO anti-hero/rogue gallery with believable powder-keg group dynamics since "Batman Returns" (apart from Alfred 🧐🤵 = lonely beacon of sanity in a Gotham City gone bat-shit bonkers with corruption, misanthropy and violence.
Gotham City 🌁⛈️🌃🌪️ = modern age moloch of corruption in daytime and torrents of violent crime at night, and a film-noir style history of both going back for decades (to go just by the looks of it).
Camera, direction, cut, cast, score, colour grading, dialogs, characterization, overall mood, pacing = 10 / 10; great overall theme: "The Crow" style "Victims, ain't we all?" mood and PTSD-stalled late coming-of-age story / coming-into-his-own story for Bruce Wayne / Batman respectively = 9/10; the only detriment from my point of view was the very straight plot / partly derivative story-line of "only" 7 / 10 for originality; yet the film has still a very high entertainment factor = 9.5 / 10 as throughout it all NEVER did I feel bored or dragged along, and only one iconic "heroic" scene felt a little over the top, breaking the otherwise rather gothic noir, yet down-to-earth mood.
It's up there with "Batman Begins" & "Batman Returns" in terms of sheer artistry, consistent stylishness, suspenseful moodiness, acting performances, entertainment value and smart characterization.

This movie was amazing! Ive already seen it twice. And the fact that they use like snorricam style pov’s to recreate the motion of comic books especially with the cars was so amazing. And the audio just through and through as you said was spot on

Incredible review, you should definitely do more!! I seriously LOVE this movie. Batman has been my favorite character/hero since I was a kid, and I love Nolan's trilogy, but this one really hit everything right. Characters, tone, story, music, they just "get" Batman. Even the little details like the sound of Batman's boots when he walks, how he uses shadows, it's insanely well thought out. I've watched it 2 times now, with plenty more to come, can't wait to see what the next movie is like. All in all, Matt reeves and Robert Pattinson nailed it. Epic.

@@impatrickt visually I couldn't rate it highly enough, loved the art direction and the use of lighting - the tone was so consistent, and stylistic without feeling gimmicky or overdone.
Had to look past a few corny moments of dialogue and a couple of odd choices in blocking/framing (literally only a couple) but other than that, gripped. Colin Farrel and Paul Dano were phenomenal!

I had this thought 💭 that maybe “The Batman” wouldn’t be like we know (3 hours long) if “Endgame” hadn’t happened. No studio would take the risk of making a superhero movie that long. I think “The Batman” came in the right time.

In the year that followed, Michael Giacchino's "The Batman" main theme has likely become my most replayed score music ever 🔂.
The jazzy "Catwoman" theme is gorgeous also. Apparently he decided to deliver in a way he's never done before, because his work on any of the other films doesn't even come close to how good The Batman score is.
