Larry Jo Bird is without a doubt, the best "all-around" player who ever lived! He played from 1980 to 1992, and from 1985 on, he was playing with a devastatingly painful back injury he got by shoveling gravel at his mom's house back home in Indiana. Larry played most of his career with terribly painful injuries. Can you just imagine how great he'd have been if he played his entire career completely healthy? When asked about Bird, Laker great Jerry West said: "He's about as perfect a player as you'll ever find." But I like Lakers coach Pat Riley's statement best. Riley said: "If I needed someone to make a shot to win a game, I'd pick Michael Jordan. If I needed someone to sink a shot to save my life, I'd take Larry Bird!" By the way, Larry Bird was 6'9" Great review my friend. Thank you very much! (By the way, I recommend you watch a video about Julius Erving. He was called "Dr. J.")
And in addition to his back injuries (and double achilles heel's surgery in 1988) remember that the year before joining the Celtics he broke his right hand playing softball with his brother. He never recovered 100% from that injury. Look at his finger when he pointing it to the ceiling after the last 3-point shot: it's totally deformed. When Auerbach knew about that incident he called Larry to the Boston Garden. The Celtic's doctor review the injury and told Red he wouldn't recommend to sign him. Red told Larry to go down to the court and started pointing to different places all around: "throw from there", "now from there"... Larry made all the shots and Auerbach decided to sign him anyway. But Larry admitted he had to change his shooting technique after that injury and that his touch wasn't as good as before.
Quite possibly the most complete baller who ever laced on a pair of shoes. There was nothing Bird couldn't do on the court. He is in my TOP 3 all-time. More Bird!!!
Larry legend is top 5 dead or alive. The clutch gene. Defenders had to bite on Larry's fakes. If not, he would just pull up and shoot it in their face. Larry legend was 6'9" His fakes were so effective because he could either pass the ball or shoot from anywhere.
The main thing is that getting a person to fall like that really has nothing to do with speed. It's just timing and surprise. Basically it just means that the defender overcommitted to a fake. First, Bird is good at selling fakes, and second, getting somebody to overcommit is easy when the defender is afraid, and feels like they need to stick their man like glue.
Basketball IQ he could do it all he gave his all he worked hard and never gave up I'm from Boston Massachusetts where he played for the Celtics he was Larry Legend he was amazing Larry Legend and magic saved the NBA 2 🐐🐐☘️
Fun fact: The retirement was in the Boston Garden and it was NOT during game time; as Larry did not have a final tour for his retirement. It was one non-game night, at The Garden and those are the fans that came out that night just for his retirement. One and done,, that was The Legend.
Best all around player ever, the only player with 24/10/6 average, 50/40/90 club founder. You see him dropping people easy because he's the first superstar to consistently use the stepback, also he had the best fakes because opponents never knew what he was gonna do, because he really could do anything
probably his ball fakes were the most lethal skill, but Larry's most lethal attribute was his mind, his will, his fire to win.. plus he could do EVERYTHING.. shoot, pass, rebound, defend, post up, clutch, and is a winner.
I'm paraphrasing some of these quotes: Jerry West--"Probably the most complete basketball player I've seen" Bobby Knight---"He possibly had the best hand-eye coordination I've ever seen" Pat Riley--"If I had to pick someone to shoot to win a game, I'd pick MJ, if I had to pick someone to shoot to save my life, I'd choose LB" He was such an assassin & clutch shooter they had to respect all aspects of his game! Bird was one of the most creative passers because of his court vision & IQ. Check out "50 Amazing Assists", he's right there with Magic.
He is so accurate with his shot that you cant take any shot for granted because he will make the shot if you ignore any attempt its a lose lose situation
Larry Bird was basketball genius...he played the game like a chess game. He kept his opponents guessing....they never knew what he was going going to do. James Worthy said "I'd rather play Michael Jordan than Larry Bird bc when you played Larry you'd have to play as a thinker." Loved your review ❤
You asked what Bird's best asset was, and in my opinion there are 2. His basketball IQ, and the fact that he had no weaknesses. He wasn't the most athletic, but his shooting and passing skills were top notch. He was also a good defender. The Celtics-Lakers rivalry during the 1980s was classic. Bird and Magic were bitter rivals on the court, but ended up being best friends off the court. Nice reaction, please keep the Bird ones coming.
His fakes were so effective because he was a passer. They never knew if it was going to be an impossible pass or if he would keep it. They worked because he wasn't selfish.
The step back wasn’t used like it is today so larry used it. the mindset at the time was to assume your opponent will try to get inside so even the simplest of step backs was devastating.
This isn't the first reaction video when I see people critisizing the first falling player as a bad defender. But later on two more people get their ankles broken by Bird, and the last one is Dominique Wilkins.
Re: the weak defenders and broken ankles, as far as I know, the step back was not actually used that often in the NBA back then. Kinda weird to think about now. Larry was a really clever player that loved any move that could fake or psyche out other players, and he was one of the first players in the NBA to use the step back intentionally on defenders. It worked really well back then in part because players in the 80s just hadn't seen the step back as much as today's players and a lot of them weren't expecting it or didn't know how to anticipate it. So Larry just embarrassed the hell out of them with it.
A fun fact of Larry. He is the founder of the 50/40/90 club. First player in history to shoot over 50% from field, over 40% from 3 and over 90% from free throw. He was lethal as a shooter and he grew up and started playing back before the 3 point line existed. Can you imagine what his 3 point shooting would have been like if he grew up with the 3 as something available to practice. You can see the marksman in his passing as well. Also want to note, he is the only person in NBA history to have earn MVP as a player, Coach of the year as a coach and executive year as the leader of basketball operations he may very well have the highest basketball IQ of any player of all time and it shows in his success on and off the court. Edit: I feel like a player that isn't watched enough these days is Dr. J.
Not only did he grew up without 3-point line, it's also that it was not popular to shoot 3-pointers. Until 1985 he averaged less than 2 3-point shots per game.
Larry was a complete player. He was the most efficient shooter. He's the founder of the 50/40/90 club, one of only two players to do it more than once, and his career stats are less than 1% away from 50/40/90. His fakes are insane. He's a super underrated passer. His fakes are so effective because he's so dangerous. He can shoot or pass from anywhere under any coverage. His top attribute is the clutch gene. He's the most clutch player ever. Not just shooting either. Whatever you needed at the key moment in a game or series, whether it was a steal, a three point shot, even carrying a whole game, he would come through. Pat Riley said "If I needed someone to make a game winning shot I might pick Michael Jordan. If I needed someone to make a shot to save my like I'd pick Bird." That's how clutch Larry was. You should check out the Making the Case Larry Bird video by Clayton Crowly.
You should watch his 50 greatest assists, the 1985/1986 season, & making the case for Larry Bird by Clayton Crowley. He was a geart trash talker too. Looking forward to watching those reviews. ❤
he always, at every time knew where everybody on the basketball court was! that should be the first lesson in basketball, if you know where everybody is at all time, you would benefit the most out of that!
Honestly his best asset was either his competitiveness or his unselfishness. Both him and Magic Johnson were similar in that regard: biggest thing was the W, personal accolades second. Both would go out of their way to get less talented teammates involved in the offensive gameplan.
"how is he dropping all these people?" There is a well-known quote out there, from James Worthy, I believe... Jordan will make you look slow but Bird will make you look stupid
Larry is more athletic than you, and most. He just didn't rely on athletics alone, because he didn''t have to. He made everyone else play at HIS pace. That is why he would dominate ANY player today, and dominated those that were, in his time (including Jordan). That is why he is the GOAT.
Just one quick note about athletics and physical power: Rodman guarded Bird 15 times. Bird averages 25 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists per game. In a Bulls-Lakers game, Rodman guarded a physical prodigy like Shaquille during the full second half of the game. Shaq scored 0. It's not about your muscle, it's about your brain.
He's really closer to 6'10"...though he was listed at 6'9". Other NBA players comment how BIG Larry is when they first play him. His best attribute was his mind. Larry is my favorite all time. . But... Magic. Dominque Wilkins Pistol Pete Wilt Chamberlain Bill Russell Bernard King Kareem Olajuwan Charles Barkley All are outstanding.
You should watch his 50 great assists, 1986 highlights, trash talking, other greats say how scary good Larry Bird is, also, making the case for Larry Bird by Clayton Crowley. Loved your review ❤
Out of curiosity, I did a search for “ultimate mixtape” and Larry Bird’s mixtape has BY FAR the most views (6.3Million!!! 😮) That’s more than Magic or Kobe or MJ or anyone else who popped up! Larry IS the GOAT!
Bro, use that fake. It’s soooo effective. Especially if you’re already a good passer, and a good shooter. If you can get the defense to respect your pass and shot, even a little, those fakes work. Bird was such a phenomenal passer and shooter that they worked almost every time.
His fakes were so effective, because if he was standing in front of you, he was a threat left, right, forward and back. He worked on developing his game to point where he was able to use just a tiny bit of room to get his shot off. Because he knew he was going to leap over anyone. He was a deadly shooter, so they had to respect his shot and he would catch you waiting for the jumper or the step back and then counter. He would get you leaning or eager and with a jab step or a head fake, he would eat you alive.
His basketball iq is by far his best ability. he was always 2 or 3 steps ahead of his opponent. Rondo is like the only player i’ve seen truly possess that same intelligence but it was never fully realized in him because he didn’t have the shooting to match the rest.
Everything about his game was "EXCEPTIONAL". YOU ARE A SMART MAN, IT DID NOT TAKE YOU LONG TO SEE WHAT LARRY WAS MADE OF...... YOU NEED TO WATCH --- MAKING THE CASE LARRY BIRD.... 💯🔥
Why his fakes are so effective? The main reason is because he can fake a shot or a pass because he was devastatingly good at both, so nobody knew if he was out to pass, shoot, or fake...
lol if larry did you his famous stepback he would have broken your ankles too xD and the weak defender was Bill Lambeer, he was not a weak defender, the other one he dropped was Dominique Wilkins, hardly a bad player too, he embarassed legends my guy and he is 6'9
You're right. *No team through out the talent rich 80s had great defensive guards* . And Bird could do all that. BYE BYE BIRDIE. Two minutes and outta here.
The best aspect of his game was that he excelled in all parts of the game. He could shoot, pass, rebound, steal, play defense and knew at all times where every player on the court was. He saw the court like no other player and made split second decisions based on what he saw. The players on the other team had no idea if he was going to go left, right, shoot with his right hand, shoot with his left hand or pass the ball to a teammate and that's why they had so much trouble guarding him. Even when Bird told the other team what the play was and where he was going to shoot from before the play even started , they could not stop him - Byron Scott of the Lakers explained it the best. ruclips.net/video/h2iyF5dgiIo/видео.html
Larry Bird 50 greatest assists, Why Larry Bird was so scary good, Larry Bird Making The Case, Larry Bird Trash Talking, Larry Bird Greatest Peaks.... There are a ton of great Larry Bird videos out there.
Check out the "making the case larry bird" video. It'll tell you everything you need to know about larry. Great react. Mj and bird, 1a and 1b, always. I could never choose between him and Jordan. But either way you're winning! Also, the making the case video is a series so there's others about some of the old heads. That dude does a great job putting his vids together. One love from stl.
I love when people like you who knows about basketball and can explain a few things about Larry's moves react to these videos. But, please, listen to the videos, to what people are saying. If you wanna make some comments you can stop the video, which you sometimes do. But I think you didn't listen to one of the most amazing Bird's feats as told by Bill Walton: when he announced to the media that he would play the next game left-handed vs Portland (2nd team in the West Conference after the showtime Lakers). That was absolutely crazy.
The reason his pass fakes were so effective was because his passing was so effective. When you are not selfish with the ball, you can shoot from anywhere and you got court vision like Larry it's difficult to defend.
His ball fakes were effective because was so unselfish. His first instinct was to pass the ball. Other players knew that so they had no reason not to believe he was not going to pass it.
You need to turn up the commentary and pay attention instead of not listening and talking of you want to learn anything - ugh!! You saw Larry Birds famous 60 POINT GAME and didnt even friggin know it.
It’s a great video but you can’t hear what’s being said. Your missing some of the things being said while your talking. Larry Bird is a legend. One of the greatest of all time. 3 champions, 3 conservative MVPs. They don’t get much better. The best shooter IMO as do many others.
Larry was the smartest and greatest all-around basketball player of all time.
Larry Jo Bird is without a doubt, the best "all-around" player who ever lived! That "weak defense" was Bill Lambeer, the biggest A-hole in NBA history, and one of the best defenders ever.
The main thing is that getting a person to fall like that really has nothing to do with speed. It's just timing and surprise. Basically it just means that the defender overcommitted to a fake. First, Bird is good at selling fakes, and second, getting somebody to overcommit is easy when the defender is afraid, and feels like they need to stick their man like glue.

his jump shot was so lethal he had defenses playing on pins and needles..
His fakes were so effective because of his accurate shooting.....
He's not just dropping them, that 2nd guy was Dominique Wilkins. #21
What was the best aspect of his game?
Yes.
Re: the weak defenders and broken ankles, as far as I know, the step back was not actually used that often in the NBA back then. Kinda weird to think about now. Another thing, Bird HATED IT when players would just watch the ball go out of bounds too. He simply did not stop and played every second to his max.

6’ 10” actually, he was listed as 6’ 9” but he is at least 2” taller than Magic
Larry dropped people because he was so skilled, if you made one wrong move, your were fuct. He did it to the best.
The best aspect of his game was his brain and control and relentlessness. Chess player, man.
You didn't seem to hear at 3:57 that he decided to play left-handed for a while.

Best skill hands down I would have to say was his competitiveness. They don’t make guys like him and MJ anymore
Doing all that at 6'9!
The best aapect of his game was he could do it all.
we can't hear the video because you don't stop talking
He was 6'9.
They don’t know if he’s going to pass or shoot
Larry was 6'9".
He is 6'9"....
6/9
You need to turn up the commentary and pay attention instead of not listening and talking of you want to learn anything - ugh!! You saw Larry Birds famous 60 POINT GAME and didnt even friggin know it.
I can take it anymore, hes missing half the great info about Larry running his mouth with the sound down
It’s a great video but you can’t hear what’s being said. Your missing some of the things being said while your talking. Larry Bird is a legend. One of the greatest of all time. 3 champions, 3 conservative MVPs. They don’t get much better. The best shooter IMO as do many others.
