The cuts coming to the Department of Education are way more concerning to me, imagine the US where doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers and engineers are no longer created because they don't have the money for tuition because FAFSA was cut. It would set a ticking time bomb in place where the US can no longer effectively train educated workers for positions critical for growing and maintaining the country.
Almost as if billionaires were taxed accordingly we could have funding for better education. Offer free vocational programs, sponsor more American citizens to go to medical (and nursing) school.

Also what tariffs do is encourage local economy, if a good is made in US it is then not tariffed which give a competitive advantage to local company which means increased revenue for local companies that then pay taxes and put that money back in the us economy. Also, following tariff you compensate by reducing income tax which means YOU get to spend more money where u want instead of giving to the feds. Another thing that tariffs does is encourage abroad companies to open factories inside the US to avoid tariffs which create more jobs for Americans.

I know someone in the aid industry and they said USAID makes up 40% of international aid- the amount of life sustaining systems that are going to be destroyed is going to be catastrophic for millions of people. And it’s such a large gap that the rest of the industry are going to struggle to fill it in any amount of time, let alone this suddenly.

I and many others in my field will be the first to say USAID has issues and still has elements of imperialism, but there is so much good that is done through USAID that wholesale dismantling of the agency will ruin. Reform has already begun taking hold over the past decade and it’s sad to see it just shuttered

I fully expect that a lot of taxpayer dollars will simply start to disappear. And that includes any money they make off of tariffs. I’m truly grateful to all the public servants who stayed in their roles to act as watchdogs and whistleblowers.

Firstly, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was invented by the current administration ostensibly to combat waste, fraud, and abuse of public money. But a whole independent department (the Government Accountability Office) already exists for that purpose. It actively audits the government and then reports its findings to Congress and (unless classified) to the American public. So the American public is being told that extreme waste and abuse is occurring that simply is not, except perhaps within the military/Department of Defense, which has a track record of failing these audits. But to my knowledge, this is not what DOGE is concerning itself with. And in fact, many of the tech billionaires that stood behind Trump at his inauguration stand to greatly financially benefit from military contracts (e.g. having to do with AI). And adding to this, the administration fired 17 inspectors general, who are tasked with independently investigating fraud, waste, and abuse within the government. Secondly, the current administration has taken control over the country’s purse strings and is working to shut down a lot of federal spending right now. Not a week ago, the administration attempted to put a full freeze on government spending that would have thrown its citizens, systems, and infrastructure into disarray. So, what I’m seeing is a combination of spending freezes and department closures, and a simultaneous increase in taxation if Americans through tariffs. And the people (and companies) who stand to benefit from this are those that do business with the government, who receive taxpayer money. And I’m particularly suspicious of those who are engaging in military contracts, since I assume those would likely be classified. Who is going to tell Trump he can’t “overspend” on a government contract with SpaceX, for example? Especially if the details are classified. That is what I mean when I say that taxpayer dollars will begin to disappear. And this is in a shocking contrast to what his constituents actually want, which as I’ve heard it are 1) lower prices 2) more prosperity 3) lower taxes. Trump’s first round of tax cuts for billionaires are set to expire in 2025, and the plan as I know it is to extend them, increase them, and make up the difference by raising taxes in other ways on other people. The tariffs are part of that. They are import taxes paid to the US government. One misconception I’ve been hearing a lot from the Right is that China, Mexico, and Canada are the importers, so they will pay the taxes. This is incorrect. They are the exporters. We are the importers, so we pay the taxes. And because import taxes are a cost of doing business, these costs will get passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices. And higher prices also mean higher sales taxes. So, yeah. Higher taxes. Higher prices. Less prosperity. All the exact opposite of what his supporters asked for.
Tariffs go directly into the General Fund. Those tariff dollars are then allocated by Congress. Works the same as federal tax dollars.

I use an old laptop at work and the customer is supposed to fill out a survey on it when I'm done -- I've encountered young people unsure how to use it because it wasn't a touch-screen tablet.

That's true, do they understand the menu systems and cmd prompts? I had to learn how to do that in grade school in the mid 90s. There are so many things that they could easily screw up without the ability to use modern computer recovery methods.

Elon calling USAID a "bowl of worms" is correct, but not how he meant it. Sure, if you're having dinner, a bowl of worms is terrible; if you're fishing, however, it isn't. USAID is bait, something for the State Department to put on the line so they can reel other countries into the control of America. I don't think this is a good thing, but Trump and Elon should. USAID was specifically created to fight the expanding influence of the USSR and communism, so this seems like a weird move from people who love talking about how dangerous communism and China's expanding influence are.

However, since that isn't currently one of the options, I would prefer for USAID to continue. They do a lot of good things, even if the reason they do those things is ultimately self-serving. Republicans not liking USAID makes no sense, though. Even if they don't like the good stuff USAID does, Republicans should still like the part where it helps maintain the American empire enough to accept the good stuff.

Hasan is too short sighted here. Musk isn't dismantling the breton woods institutes like the IMF/World Bank and american soft power is centralised there, its the only reason USAID has power to begin with. This is simply a first step to transitioning to a different set of international relations, away from multilateralism, towards a more directly expansionist and extractivist approach. That sort of approach needs a 'frontier' which needs to be tamed, and isolationist policies like this one is a good step towards creating a zero sum game with other countries which prioritises the use of direct military power. Chatter got it right with the overt/covert comment.
