That rock looks like quartzite, a low metamorph of sandstone. The pebbles in the intervening layer are a conglomerate probably a flood deposit on a riverbank of a fluvial channel. They are deformed by the later pressure and temperature that caused the metamorphic transition from sandstone to quartzite.
Traveled the line over 60 years ago but never deviated there in more recent driving visits to relies down the rear end of the state. Probably too late now. :-(
