- In this video I'll talk you through how I installed aftermarket roof rails and roof bars to the pop top on my Volkswagen T5.1

Excellent video Simon! Thanks for showing us how relatively straightforward the process can be completed as long as you take your time and think about the process carefully.
Fantastic video Simon exactly what I wanted to see as we are considering a pop top for our vw transporter t32 and currently have roof rails and a solar panel fitted and would like to be able to keep them if we go ahead with the pop top conversion. I think by watching your great video we would remove our rails and solar panel ourselves and then after we get the pop top fitted refit the rails and panel. Excellent video thanks for sharing this with us all :-)👍😎👀🙂🤜🤛🔧🔧
On fibreglass, if you run your drill in reverse, obviously it's slower, but you end up with a much neater hole.
Never knew that!! Great tip!
Thank you Simon, just order the same for my SWB, I'll report back in a little over a week to see how I got on!
Bought the bars for my T5.1 from the link but needed SWB. Following this video and instructions hopefully I’ll get mine fitted ok.
this is excellent video as ive been thinking about fitting some to my pop top so i can fit a solar panel to them
Thanks Stephen. It was a lot harder in my head than in practice. Go for it!!
Good video, Great info, Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Great video!
I plan on fitting my pop top myself, I'll be doing something similar, fiberglassing reinforced brackets into the underside of the pop top, you don't have to use metal for these, you can use wood stripes too, having it covered in the f/glass and resin you can make it super strong! 😊
Great video, answered all my questions perfectly .... thank you
Great stuff Simon 👍 I just bought the VW factory roof rack for pop up roof cost me 330 euros but they’ve gone up to 440 euros lucky I got the old stock
Awesome video thanks for sharing
When you put the rails on at first you csn see you have them different hence the problem when you were worried the middle supports wouldn't fit
Would like to fit some of these to my van but the link sends me to a no drill set of rails without any fixing kit.Could someone help me to find where I can get some rails with a fixing kit
Thanks for this, I cannot find the bars you provided the link for, the bars you used are different to the ones on the website link. They are all non drill products.
Great video! I am about to attempt to do the same on my Alphard. Where did you get the large rectangular metal strips you are using to secure the underside?
Really strange question..but do you know how high the roof bars sit, I have a solar panel that’s fitted pretty low to my roof..but not sure if it’s low enough for the roof bars to be higher than it.
Hi Simon,
Great idea and thanks for the video.
Are the rails the wrong way round?
Hi, good vid, thinking of doing same on Austop roof. I get it’s a while ago can you tell me, based on the holes you drilled, is the roof fibreglass all the way through or wood encased in fibreglass? Thanks
Hi, Great job, we're the rails you ordered for a standard transporter non pop top roof, or we're they specifically for a pop top please
Thanks Brian. They were for a standard transporter (no poptop). The roof rails I bought were these: tradevanaccessories.co.uk/volkswagen-t5-transporter-roof-rails-set-tx3-sahara-lwb-black/
Great video Simon, definitely given me the inspiration to do the same. Is that an Austops pop top?
Thanks Alex. Yea Austops roof. Not quite sure what the weight limit will be on it, might give them a buzz and ask.
Go for it!! Let me know how you get on.
@@simonjenns they say 25kg but they look to be as strong if not stronger than their competitors who rate their at more that double that.
@@alexwhibley7517 interesting! I just phoned them and they said 25kg max…I’m sure that’s a conservative recommendation to cover themselves rather than what it’s capable of holding.
How much weight would you risk?
Great great video, I’ve been thinking of doing the same but with the intention of putting some sort of storage box on there, but I’m worried about the weight limit
Get dome headed nuts then the issue with the potential of tearing the skirt is diminished, with the extended thread that the nylocs need. You are using a spring washers so any threat of the nut slackening shouldn't occur, dome heads also look better from the underside
Hi mate - how’s it been with weight on the roof? About to fit rack and box on T6 pop top and asking as many folks as I can about how theirs is faring.
Thanks
I've ordered the rails in your description mine haven't come with the rubber seal around the mount. Did you get these separate or did the come with. As they don't sit flush kn my pop top?
Brilliant video mate. Iv been looking for some time and really want to get my kayak on the pop top. Iv got a T6 so do you think the same bars will fit?
How much did it cost all in all?
Hi Simon, great vid thank you, I noticed you have 4 fixings on each rail but the ones in the link have only 3. Are the 4 fixing rails still available?
Steve
Thanks Steve, glad you’ve found it helpful!
When I ordered mine the image had only 3 fixings per rail, but when they arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see 4.
My guess is that perhaps the SWB rails have 3 fixings and LWB rails have 4…but that the website just used the same image for both the LWB and the SWB listings?
Let me know how you get on!
Many thanks, fitting this weekend so I’ll let you know.
Would this be ok on a motorway Waugh surfboard ?
Hi, Your bars seem to have four fixing point but the link given takes you to bars with only 3 fixing points ?
Where did you buy this kit from thanx for the video
Hi Steven, you're welcome. I've put a link to the products in the video description.
Hi Simon , great video !
Do you have any dimensions on what height you gained from poptop to top of roof bars ?
I am currently at just around 2m with my Awning being the highest point and can still make it under the 2.1m barriers fine but would like to keep it that way for trips i am not using roof rails
Hi, have you noticed any leaks where you have put the bolts? I'm trying to work out if I need to sikaflex aswell as bolt them on.. cheers
Hi, no leaks noticed - as the fixings are outside of the canvas even if water did get in it’s no real drama. Sikaflex certainly wouldn’t do any harm, but I wouldn’t say it’s really necessary.
Hope that helps!
Great video Simon! i am hopefully doing the same over the next few weeks. could i ask a few questions and a favor, I am looking at installing ford transit custom LWB rails to my VW T6 LWB poptop, they come in 2 types, ones the same style as yours and one that looks abit more like you would see on an VW Amork (the back mount isn't curved the same as the front, looks abit more off road style to suit our swamper, have a google and you'll see what i mean) i'm just wondering what length you rails are from front to back? would you be able to measure it and let me know?
im hoping the transit ones are near enough the same and i can use the same technique you did for mounting them.
thanks again!
James
Hi James, excellent! I've just measured and they're 265cm from the very tip of one end of the rail, to the very tip of the other end of the rail.
Hope that helps!
Simon
thank you!!
