- Two new civs were recently added to Civilization 6, including the glorious Byzantium! The Byzantines are an exceptionally powerful nation, using religious conversion to boost an aggressive military playstyle. If played correctly, this might just be a top-tier civ and I'm looking forward to exploring its capabilities in Deity mode!

Porphyrogennetos - "Born in Purple" or "Born in room of porphyre stone Chamber" - title given to children of Byzantine emperor that get born after his intronization. They had primary to inherit throne and was considered special asset when come to alliances by marriage.
The0Stroy porphyro is actually dark red.i am Greek so I know that for a fact

Byzantium is absolutely insane for domination if played correctly. You need to rush for a religion though but otherwise it's an easy domination win
While I was rushing religion in the Ancient Era with a single city, AI declared. Tough but I still managed to win at the end (immortal).

Byzantium is ridicously OP for domjnation. Love at first sight!
I have heard them called a snowball civ. Which they kind of seem like. They have a bunch of stuff they want before they can start the cav printers. Their units get better the more you have, they get better if you convert the enemy, the more holy sites you conquer the stronger they get, and the more you conquer the more printers you can make. It seems like if your initial rush fails or you don't build it up in time things can go badly quickly.

Sending that trader to the city state for the envoy gave them the nice banana tile that your 2nd city could have used. Worth checking that kind of thing out for future games :)

As a scrub when it comes to Civilization, I get murdered by barbarians, this playthrough should be enjoyable and informative

Best option for me always is Earth Goddess, very useful for later game to use lots of left over faith to buy land military units
They really should add Assyrian empire- the first empire in history to conquer both Mesopotamia and Egypt.

It's interesting that Basil has a beard. The Byzantines/Romans used to order their soldiers be clean shaven so that enemies couldn't grab their beard during hand to hand combat. At least that's what Constantine ordered early in the 4th century.

The hippodrome is a S tier unique district, it gives 2 extra amenities than normal, cost half the cost, gives a free heavy cavalry unit for every hippodrome and building after it and all heavy cavalry units that you get from it does not cost recources to build and even to maintence, pretty sure it is the same with gold to, I won with byzantium on immortal (immortal win for the first time) and they were so fun!

Just bought this today. Very cheap with all DLC's. $35. Never played it but it looked very cool. For $35 you can't go wrong. The base game was only $8 but I wanted EVERYTHING without having to pay for all the extras.
I think, I'd buy that banana tile near Thessalonica right away.

Sending a unit into another civ's land has no negative effects if the civ has open borders, which every civ has at the start of the game.

I’ve found the best early build order to be Slinger / Slinger / Settler (or) Builder / Monument in general. Obviously it changes in situations where you are far from any player you can put the second slinger on the back burner and go for the quick settler to settle a second city near your capital, if you have lots of culture you can avoid the monument, etc. The double slinger helps ward off potential invaders (they still will probably declare war but at least you’re not caught with your thumb up your butt), and once you unlock Archery you can upgrade your slingers (hopefully you’ve gotten the eureka by killing a unit w the slinger and upgrading the unit to Garrison, your city will be good). If you’ve been peaceful and exploring with your slingers then you may have found a governor title, and getting Magnus upgraded once you can begin the settler spam, extra points if you build the government plaza with 50% settler production and colonization policy card
This is for Deity / Immortal. If you’re anything lower the build order isn’t so crucial at all

Civ IV music at the start was giving me nostalga
There's this mod (I forgot the name) that gives every civilization more unique units. I'd recommend you using it because I just feel like civilizations only having 1 or 2 unique units is really not fun because most of the time everyone would end up using the normal unit instead of the unique unit due to them using other type of unit that they don't have the unique unit (range, heavy cavalry...) Or their unique unit becomes outdated way too quickly.
Also, I think you should've bought the rice tile and immediately improve it and work it because production may be king in the late game but food is the king in the early game.
I'm in the middle of making myself some Civ 4 mods that stop the tech tree at the end of earlier eras for this exact reason. Even at marathon speed it seems like you don't get much chance to use certain units.

I love civilization played all of them...the only thing that's annoying about them is sometimes a rivil country can rip through the ages to fast... personally I think that spoils it a bit
Not sure how far you are in recording but I'd like to suggest that you turn on the banners under the player portraits so we can see how you're scaling up to other civs easier.
So unfair. I play Byzantium and I spawn on a flat land with not a single help for a holy site apart from some woods. You spawn next to a mountain and a wonder. :D
Hey, just i question, u could have had a +3 campus in your capital, where u put your first quarry, why didnt you do that? I can barely beat deity so im not that great at the game, would appreciate it if you helped me out thx

You do not need pottery to place farms on rice. Pottery allows you to harvest rice, wheat, etc

Byzantium seems really interesting to me but Russia will always hold a place in my heart as my favorite nation!
It was the first one I played with and the first one I won with.It has kind of the same type of deal as Australia going for it having increased yields in the tundra biome and that is even more soo exemplefied by the 2nd row of tiles that come when you expand as them too.And let's also not understate the fact that if allowed to you will always be caught up in technology or in most of my SP cases be even farther ahead than anyone else.
As I said I think I may be switching to Byzantium for a bit but I will come back to my beloved Russia

How did you get baba yetu from civ4 playing? My skin crawls with nostalgia!
I think it is better to put the city on the tile between tile with the horses and the tile with the 4 productions. Yes you don't get the coast but you do get the horses right away and it will speed up the spread to that tile surrounded with 3 mountain tiles alot faster.
I am not familiar with Civ games, I was wondering can you play as the Byzantines through the whole timeline of your gameplay if that makes sense?
Like start and take them to the future remaining Byzantium?
Yes, you play as the same civilization throughout the entirety of your game. On the other end of the time spectrum, you can start as America. :)
