    With cab renovations a distant memory, we are now fully focused on the demolition of the old horsebox but its heavy steel construction is no joke! In this episode, we try to figure out how on earth we’re going to dismantle the box down to the truck chassis, and show you why we absolutely do not want to reuse the frame 😬
    👫 ABOUT US
    We're Pete and Hayley, a husband and wife duo from the south of the UK, on our exciting journey towards self-sufficiency and off-grid living. Our first project is to convert our rotten, old Mercedes 7.5 tonne horse truck into a cosy tiny home.

    It's great seeing your confidence level slowly rising. Also very encouraging to see that you're doing things your way at a speed you're comfortable with. There were much quicker more efficient ways to deal with the box but you're thinking through things and nobody's got hurt yet. Try not to pay too much attention to the "should have done it like this" brigade. You're getting there. Still rooting for you

    I am a long way from being able to afford doing this but have already got most of the design together. I don't know if you're planning a higher roof height but my design has the double bed at the back and raises up to the 8ft ceiling when not in use. It's above the lounge area so that you can lower the bed to watch the TV or keep it up and use the sofas. I'm also thinking about keeping some sort of fold down ramp as a decking area but not sure how to keep it insulated properly.

    • @RoadToOffGrid

    The cost of all the consumables outweighs the value of the scrap. You’d be better off advertising the box for sale and getting the new owner to collect it. They are often used for stables in remote locations. You’d end up with cash for your build and it would all be done in a day.

  • @StephenAgar-y7c
    @StephenAgar-y7c 20 дней назад

    The box on the back of the wagon is mounted to the floor. The truck is just a flatbed with a box on top for the horses. It should just lift off the body easy to do about 4 to 6 bolts each side of the horsebox bolt it to flatbed of the truck.

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  19 дней назад

      Yes true. But where we are would require a large crane to lift it and I don’t think it would be worth the cost. Plus we’re having fun getting to know the truck and dismantling it.

  • @RihardsDel
    @RihardsDel 21 день назад +3

    Whats the point to complicate things.
    If you are not keeping the floor section, drive it to any scrapyard, undo the bolts and get them to lift it off with a machine. They get to keep the scrap and some money whilst you have a basic problem sorted.
    The way you are doing it is time and energy consuming. You will have to overcome many obstacles in the build, dont make the demolition as rocket scinece.

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  21 день назад +1

      That is not a bad idea! Several reasons, it’s not currently road worthy, I don’t have a license, but mainly because we thought it would be fun which it has been 😁

      @@RoadToOffGrid taking apart is easy. Building it back together is not 😂
      I have a project truck a Renault Magnum 2007 that I’m working on and the dismantling part was easy. Putting it back together using good quality materials such as stainless steel bolts for example will already cost a fortune + the headache of going 30-40x to the hardware shop. The two seats I replaced and refurbished ended up costing £2200 alone.

      No that thing is done, no point spending a huge amount of effort on money on something that is easier to just rebuild from scratch. Probably wouldn't bother with the alu welding either. Industrial glues and a good rivet gun will get the job done. I built my box out of XPS sandwich panels glued and riveted with alu angle. Probably look into seeing if the subframe can be saved, that could save a huge amount of effort.
