I thought that as well. If you remember the movie Eastwood was more subdued than most of his other movies and had a bit of a mental issue as well. It was not his typical "no fear" self.
I actually missed any mention of Cap being sick and thought he was doing an Eastwood impression. Either way, good health and great video!

I actually got to watch some of this filmed. I was a fresh behind the ears, electronic technician in the US Air Force, working in the Combat Operations Center at March Air Force Base, CA. They filmed a good amount of the shots depicting the State Side Command Center there, as it's fairly close to LA. The huge screens tracking the operation, and all the communications equipment were mine, you'd never know but there were several of us behind the cameras, standing on stairwells watching it all. Also got to meet Clint Eastwood, hell of a nice guy who actually stopped and tossed a football around with us in the parking lot (our barracks shared the lot with the COC). It was a great experience, and not the last encounter with that world in the short time stationed there.
Fairly close to LA and a five and a half hour drive if you head that way at the wrong time.
That's a really interesting bit of info! I'd always assumed it was an elaborate set!
I found where that cabin in the opening is in Northern California. It's still there.

I heartily recommend the novel "Firefox" by Craig Thomas to all aviation buffs! It's really well researched - it even has a bunch of maps, notes and memos in the front of the book. It also does away with some of the more ridiculous artistic license used in the film, such as the "think in Russian" gimmick.
Craig Thomas really was the British Tom Clancy!
I'd also recommend 'Firefox Down', by the same author. It was pretty good too!
Been a long time since I’ve read those two, it wasn’t a rear firing missile in the novel was it? It was a flare/anti-missile decoy that got swallowed to the other Firefox’s intake wasn’t it?
His books are really good, there's another "Gant" book where they nick a pair of Hind helicopters in Afghanistan (?) and use them to sneak into the USSR to recover proof of a secret Soviet space-based laser system. The finale involves a Little Bird flying down a railway tunnel! 😀

I gotta say, I'm a big fan of the F-15C-ski with GrumpStar🌟. That skin is also pretty awesome.
I actually appreciated Cap’s whispering at the start, added more urgency and a feeling of secrecy to the mission. I’m assuming you’re sick (my best wishes if you are), but that was cool!

Firefox was ahead of it's time when it came out. We might chuckle at the outdated graphics, but for 1982 it was huge. I watched it for both the aircraft and Clint Eastwood. The movie came out two years after the Final Countdown. I was fortunate enough to have seen both movies in the theatre on the big screen. I tried replicating the same mission with A/I enemy and scaled down. The SR-71 mod was a better choice, I thought since it was closer for the speed, when replicating the movie. At the time, no other aircraft came close to the Mach 6 Hypersonic speeds.

I loved that movie as a kid. Thanks for another great scenario, please keep up these fun twists and non historic fun flights. I love history but these are exciting and more unique in my opinion.

I remember seeing Firefox in the theater, that was one of my favorite movies back then!
From the movie the plane was stealthy, could also fly beyond mach 2.5, rugged gear to land on an ice cap if necessary to refuel, fire backwards at aggressors that would pursue. I'd be curious to see this redone with either a stealthy F-15 (mod), or with YF12A to get the speed and altitude capability that's missing from the Eagle. I'd also suggest further in Russian territory like 500 miles or so. I think the tactics would be different and more options would avail themselves to the hero pilots stealing the birds. The technology of the Firefox was so far ahead of the rest of the planes in the Russian military that the only plane that could hunt it was another Firefox.
Did a quick wiki on the firefox fictional specs, 50 000 pounds of thrust on each engine and mach 5+ speed. At one point in the film it outruns a couple of missiles!

You have to remember that back then (I mean 1982), there were literally no exciting aviation movies. "Iron Eagle" was REALLY bad and "Top Gun" was superb but then were both a few years later.
So, "Firefox" was the best to come out - and as a 12 year old - it was superb, even though there was hardly any actual aviation footage until the end of the movie.
Iron Eagle was at best, a mediocre movie. But it had a great soundtrack.
It was a great spy movie with some planes at the end. Hilariously, the miG-31 of the movie's wings looked a lot like the MiG-25 prototype (with the wing tips) It even has a cameo of Cliff Clavin (he is in the submarine crew), the guy whose face melts in Raiders of the lost Ark is in there, as is the guy who plays in Yes Minister.
Cap really sounds like Captain Price from Modern Warfare right now. Thank you all for making another awesome video!

Brilliant! Seriously do it again. Maybe tweak the parameters slightly but just watching Simba weaving through the valleys was almost meditative. I’m sure there a combo of tactics that might conserve fuel and stay hidden for longer. Stay nap of the Earth all the way next time?
As a Firefox movie fan I am I always wonder if the actual plane from the movie was real today and have a actual air combat with other modern aircraft. That would be one hell of fight to see.

Wish there was a mod where you could fight aircraft/spacecraft from the old MS-DOS game Raptor: Call of the Shadows. Wouldn't it be nice to have a perfect model of the aircraft you could fly in Raptor? The aircraft you pilot in the game almost reminds me of the F-15 STOL/MTD - ACTIVE prototypes.
ADDED: I see you did a video with the ACTIVE. Impressive.
Is the jiggling motion the effect of the rudder array? Seems a bit poky. The Eagle is pretty stable.

I was LITERALLY just reading the Wiki entry on FF today. Watched this movie every time I could as a lad. Sure, it’s predictable and kind of hokey in a couple of places. (I mean how wrinkly would you be after a 3 hour shower!?). But they did eventually get airborne and think in Russian.
So…have you Grim Reapers done the Actual Iron Eagle mission? Jason Gedrick, Louis Gossett, JR.? One Vision by Queen? Gimme Some Lovin?

The MiG-25 Foxbat is probably the largest jet fighter/interceptor ever made, at 78 feet in length. The MiG-31 Foxhound is slightly shorter, at 74 feet.
