When you raise preflop and miss the flop do you:
    A) Bet too frequently?
    B) Do not bet enough?
    C) I am perfectly balanced! 😅

I understand the 1 BB cbet but in reality especially earlier in tourneys it just doesnt work often enough just like Negreanu has said which is why he doesnt like the GTO play of a tiny cbet like this. I will agree it works better when later in a tourney and if you mix it up with bigger cbets rather you have it or not. Many players will just continue with their entire range and will float with all kinds of hands. Works great when someone is also playing a GTO strategy but 99.9% of players dont play anywhere near GTO

I'm confused about Example 3 (Hero raise UTG; button call; flop KQ9 rainbow)
You say we don't have a range and nut advantage. Why?
We have AA, KK, QQ, AK, which presumably villain doesn't (no 3-bet). That's a pretty big nut advantage, no?
Also, we probably have a moderate range advantage because we have less junk than villain, because our UTG RFI range is so tight. He's calling all pocket pairs, including some we're folding, and he probably has more suited connectors than us.
Much of our 'junk' is suited aces (BDFD+Gutshot), but those could also be considered weak draws. Our only real junk is AXh and mid-pocket pairs (77; 88?) + the occasional suited connector we throw into the mix here.

  • @gaborszekely8387

When calculating range/nut advantage, do you look at the total number of hands in their range that could have connected with the board, or the % of hands that connected in proportion to the rest of their range?
i.e., let's say you raise early position and the button calls. Flop comes A76 rainbow.
On this board, you are definitely going to have the nut advantage (AA), but the button will have more 2 pair, sets, and random Ax in their range. You on the other hand will have way more bluff catchers (99-KK) and strong one pairs (AJ-AK).
Even though the button has more total hands that connect with this flop, they also have a bunch of random crap that missed so the % of their range that connects will be smaller than yours.

Well for me if it's 100% whiff (like black AK on a red 567 flop) & im out of position i'll usually judt check/fold, in position maybe a delayed c-bet or just check it down.
Like mentioned range & type of opponent(s) in the hand may change that but the first paragraph is what i'd do most often.

When someone checks to you on the flop, and you only have some draws with no current winning hand, should you check to see another card? or should you bluff or semi bluff? I always get tempted to bluff over-check but I have a feeling I should be checking more. Thanks.

The one thing I don’t understand about playing with ranges is that this all makes sense in games with good players where you can get a general idea of their range, but what about in microstakes? I play on bovada and it’s rare you even see a hand go to showdown in .02/.05 or .5/.10 and when you do half the time one hand mucks. So realistically I’m seeing _maybe_ 10-15 faceup hands an hour. Should I just assume my opponents have GTO ranges but slightly looser?
I have a feeling what I really need to do to be successful in microstakes is to be _patient._ Try to c-bet bluff but dont triple barrel (bc even tho it works sometimes it seems like it doesn’t work enough to be profitable, or at least I cant identify the spots where it does and doesn’t work). bet when i have top pair or better depending on board texture and bet linearly to my hand strength. The one thing I don’t like is it feels like maybe once every 3 hours I’ll get a hand where I have a good hand _and_ the opponent had a good but worse hand. But maybe that’s just how poker is?
I wish I knew what a winning player playing the “fundamentals” at micro stakes looked like.

Hey Jonathan - great content! While I agree for the most part that you have to defend narrower in multi-way pots, I do think there's some legitimacy and leveraging players against each other in multi-way plots because each person has to defend tighter so sometimes you can use that to actually play more aggressively and get bluffs through

i liked your correction of grammar. Good video. This is exactly what i've been missing. The example of J-6-6 with an Ax, you say it's best to check, but what if they raise? do you call? or because of the perceved range i.e. they might have that 6 or that J, dont you just fold at this point? I guess it depends on player type but so unpredictable with fish because they have no logic applied to their plays

If you don't cbet often you should cbet. Ppl knowing your image will fold more often.
If you do cbet often but opponent is tight you can either check or cbet. Depends on if you think his pre-flop calling range is made hands or decent hands like AJ +. If he has good pocket pairs I would not cbet often vs this guy without a made hand.
If opponent is loose and aggressive I would cbet or check. Check depending on if he likes to 3 bet flops that suit his range.
If you always cbet then don't cbet your made hands and that will most likely induce a loose player into bluffing.

I mean, i read about it a couple of times i understand it as i read but when i play some games online (which is not the best way to learn, bc it's obviously different than tournament or even casual game with friends) i have no time to analise and count those things, not mention when i should count it. There must be some kind of shortcuts to memorise it.
So what I am asking is what are the steps to evaluate, are you evaluating every street or maybe only particular situations?

These are always the toughest to play from oop because it feels like they should fold a lot to a cbet but in online 6max games people overcall flop and turn, it's not registering to me how a flop cbet on such boards aren't profitable but yet people rarely fold in these spots.

How do you know if you have the range advantage when you believe your opponents are all playing pretty solid ranges?
I guess for example if I am playing top 20% I know my range, but how am I identifying my opponent's range to know if I have range advantage, or if they're even considering range advantage and not just playing their specific hands in general?
I guess I just don't really understand playing vs ranges in general..

    • @JKenny44
      @JKenny44 Год назад +1

It doesn't matter if your opponent is not thinking in the same level as you. You should still think about how to play vs their entire range.
If you open UTG and get called UTG+1 they should have mostly suited broadways and medium pocket pairs. They should have no garbage and they also have no QQ+ because they would've raised that.
If the BB defends you they have a very wide range, much lower cards on average, far less pocket pairs.
So the UTG+1 has range advantage on a high coordinated board like QT8 2 tone.
The BB has range advantage on a low-low-low board.
You will have range advantage on a uncoordinated high card board like A73 or K95.

When open raising Early Position 1,2,3, (probably to become Out Of Position) I try to structure my range "pair heavy" AA...QQ...TT...77 [66 55] ... and limit my bluff range. That way I have many pairs (and overpairs and sets). What do you think? In addition my image can be "tight", and when I loosen up on the cutoff and button I have "a range advantage"...

heh-heh. Wow. Dassa lotta caps and exclamations. I dunno. It just seems to me that if your opponent is any good, he's gonna mix up his tendencies. So you really don't know his range. At least not to the accuracy where you can just plug it into a mathematical equation like it's a given fact. But dat's just me. I can tell by the caps you know what you're talking about so I'm probably wrong.

@@joeseddit well, they failed to apply the knowledge. what was rahul doing? rohit gav his wicket away, gill horrible shot when not set. no rotation of strike.
there are chinks in batting order:lack of depth. surkya kumar is not a one day player. he got out 3 times straight and that were the signs. all he does is sweep and did not adopt when they were balling short, stay there till 50 th over.
did you see how pat commions bailed out asustralia both in tests and one dayers? against afghanistan? afghan failed dropping sitters( young country and budding one. so you pardon them).

after 6 there is nothing. on top of that you have PANDYA MISSING IN ACTION. YOU JUST HAVE ONE GUY WHO CAN BAT N BOWL AND HE WAS GONE MISSING. HE WOULD HAVE TAKEN YADAVS SPOT AND HE HAS THE SHOTS TO HIT ANYWHERE UNLIKE SURYA KUMAR YADAV WHO FELL IN TO A TRAP.

poker is not a perfect game man.
      ---------
you have to study your opponent and know how he is calling based on that you adjust your range is the point. what type of player he is, is what you have to determine. all poker sites say that no matter what pot-odds, equity, bet size that and this you decide.
      -------------
a player will call based on his position, stack size and stage at the tournament. he is not gonna play the same way at different stages, positions and stack sizes. he will alter his bet sizes and also his bluffs and adjust his range. you also adjust yours based on that player or players.
      -------------------
and HOPE the cards FALL ON YOUR SIDE RATHER THAN THEIRS.
      -----------------
IT TAKES YEARS AND YEARS OF PRACTICE AND EASIER SAID THAN DONE FOR SURE.
      ---------------
LITTLE SAID HE WAS PLAYING 5000 HANDS PER DAY. SO UNLESS YOU HAVE SEEN 3 TO 4 MILLION HANDS( WHICH IS 4 YEARS 12 HOURS WORK PER DAY ONLINE PLAYING MULTI-TABLES AT 60 HANDS PER HOUR) LIVE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE AS YOU CAN PLAY MAX 30).
      -----------------
HE STARTED YOUNG AND HAS GRINDED. SO HE HAS TIME.
      -------------------
FOR NEW-BEES IT IS BABY STEPS. AS IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO KNOW THESE RANGES AT 10 STACK SIZES AND 9 POSITIONS. THOUGH THERE ARE ONLY 169 STARTING HANDS IN THAT CUBE.
      ----------------------
YOU ARE NOT GONNA PLUG AND STUDY IN GTO RIGHT AWAY AS YOU NEED THAT SOFTWARE AND YOU HAVE TO BUY. NOT SURE POKER COACHING PROVIDES IT ONLINE.
      -----------------------------
IT IS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO MASTER THOSE PRE-FLOP CHARTS THAT ARE GIVEN FREE. THEY ARE JUST GUIDELINES AND CANT BE BY-HEARTED. ALSO PUSH FOLD CHART AND QUIZZ.
      ------------------
SO POKER IS BEATING YOUR OPPONENT.
      -----------------------
NOW WITH SOLVER INVOLVED, ANALYTICAL AND ALSO STATSTICAL.
MEANING THEY KNOW HOW MANY TIMES 10/10 FLOPS A SET BASED ON STATSTICS AS SOLVER IS MORE MATHEMATICAL THAN REALITY( IT HAS FEEDER FROM EXPERTS). AND MATHEMATICAL PROBABILITY IS NOT THAT USEFUL. IT IS USEFUL BUT NOT ALL THE TIME.
      -----------------------
ONCE YOU NAIL THE MATH, PRE-FLOP CHARTS AND KNOW THEM ROUGHLY AT THESE POSITIONS AND STACK SIZES.
THEN YOU HAVE TO FOCUS ON EXPLOITATIVE( WHICH COMES BY REAL PRACTICE AND NOT STUDYING AT TABLE).
AND BRAVE TO BLUFF ALL THE TIME AS THERE IS MASSIVE VARIANCE.
YOU WILL GO DOWN 5K IN ORDER TO WIN 15K.
      ------------------------------------
YOU NEED TO READY TO LOSE AND HAVE PROPER BANKROLL.
YOU NEED TO HAVE MONEY COMING INN SO THAT YOU LOSE 1000 DOLLARS IN A SESSION. YOU EITHER TAKE 2 WEEKS OFF TO GET THAT MONEY OR DO NOT RISK SO MUCH!!
      ----------------------------------
THESE ARE ELITE PLAYERS AND THEY BUY IN 25000 K LIKE IT IS NOTHING. THAT IS NOT FOR ORDINARY MORTALS.
I SEE 1 DOLLAR AND 2 DOLLAR POT SIZE BLOWS TO 1000! SO IT GETS EXPONENTIAL JUST LIKE THAT.
      ------------------------------
HE IS A TREMENDOUS PLAYER AS HE HAS BEEN DOWN ONLY 25K IT SEEMS. JARVIS ANOTHER GUY WHO SAID HE WAS NEVER BAD BEAT.
      ----------------------------
BUT NEGRENEU KEPT IT REAL AND SAID I HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION DOWN INTHAT INTERVIEW AND HIS 12 MILLION WIN CAME NEARLY A DECADE AGO.
      ---------------------------
IN HIS 25000 DOLLAR BUY INN AN OPPONENT HAD GONE IN 9 TIMES WITHIN FIRST 2 HOURS ALREADY! 9 BULLETS.
THAT MEANS HE BLEW 250K ALREADY. WHICH IS A COLLEGE BUDGET AT ELITE COLLEGES IN USA.
      ---------------------------
SO YOU HAVE TO START AT BOTTOM AND WORK YOUR WAY UP AND IT HELPS FOR PEOPLE WHO START YOUNG WITH NO BURDEN AS TIME ON THEIR SIDE AND THEY CAN AFFORD TO BLOW 4 HOURS GRINDING, 4 YEARS MASTERING!!!
      ----------------------------
THE 200 DOLLAR EARNING IS ELITE OF ELITE. YOU HAVE TO GET MONEY FORM OPPONENTS WHO ARE ALSO THERE TO WIN.
      -------------------------
THIS IS VERY HARD BECAUSE IF YOU GET FINANCIAL DEGREE IT PAYS 180K WITH THAT 250K FOR STARTERS AND USA IS THE BIG BOSS.
      --------------------------
SO IF YOU ARE VERY WELL ENDOWED IN BLOWING MONEY YOU HAVE TO GO FOR IT AS LOSS IS PAINFUL.
HE HAS SPENT LOT OF TIME TO DEAL WITH THEM DOWNSWINGS.
      -------------------------
THESE TOP PROS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD. THEY BLOW 250K IN BUY INN LIKE IT IS NOTHING AND TOP OF THE TOP GO TILL MILLION N 2!
      --------------------------
IT CAN BE DEADLY BECAUSE 10 CENT GAMES POT CAN BLOW TILL 100 DOLLARS IN NO TIME.
      ------------------------
SO YOU HAVE TO START ROCK BOTTOM AND START CLIMBING UP!!
      ------------------------
AND HE ALSO SAID THAT HE BROUGHT ALL BOOKS WHILE WORKING AND ALSO PAID 25K TO GET COACHED BEFORE HE EVEN STARTED PLAYING TO MAKE MONEY IN VEGAS.
HOW MANY PEOPLE DO THAT NOW.
HE WAS 19 SO IT WORKED OUT.
      --------------------------------
THERE ARE OTHER FIELDS: MUSIC, SPORTS ETC ETC. KEY IS IF YOU LIKE IT YOU MUST LATCH ON TO IT WHEN YOUNG SO YO HAVE TIME ON YOUR SIDE.
      ----------------------
OTHERWISE THIS WILL BE JUST MAX 100 DOLLAR HOBBY PER WEEK, IF YOU CAN SPARE THAT MATCH. BECAUSE YOU CAN BE DOWN 100 DOLLARS IN MINUTES.
      -----------------------
      I NOTICED THAT!!
      --------------------------
I GOT ROYAL FLUSH IN BEGINNING PART OF TOURNAMENT IN THE VERY FIRST MONTY I TOUCHED POKER IN MY LIFE!!!
IT DID NOT COME AT FINAL TABLE.
AND I ALSO LOST TO ROYAL FLUSH AT THE FINAL TABLE IN 10 CENT BUY IN TOURNAMENT. THE PRIZE MONEY WAS 10 DOLLARS. I GOT 7.5 HE GOT 10. SO NO BIG DEAL.
      -------------------------------
TOURNAMENT MULTI-ENTRIES WILL HURT YOU WHEN YOU CANT GET A BREAK WITH GOOD CARDS AND ANOTHER SIDE IS YOU LOSE WITH GOOD CARDS. YOU GET AK,QQ,AJ,AA YOU ARE GONNA FOLD IF OPPONENT GOES ALL INN? IT IS HARD TO GET THEM TO START WITH. OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE GONNA GO ALL INN.
      -----------------------
CASH GAMES IS ALSO SAME ONE OR TWO HOURS YOU RUN IN TO BAD BEATS YOU ARE DOWN 100 DOLLARS IN 10 CENTS/25 CENTS AND DOWN 1000 DOLLAR IN 2 DOLLAR/5 DOLLARS AND DOWN 10000 HOURS IN MERE 100 DOLLAR/200 DOLLAR BLINDS!
      -------------------------
YOU NEED TO HAVE MONEY COMING INN THIS CAN GET WORSE THAN STOCK MARKET DAY TRADING OR OPTION TRADING WHER EYOU CAN CONTRL RISK AND HAVE LOT OF OPTIONS.
      ----------------------------------------------
THE RISK SHOULD BE 1% OF YOUR SAVINGS: FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU ARE SAVING 10000 DOLLARS IN USA PER YEAR AND BANK GAVE YOU 5%(WISHFUL THINKING).
YOU RISK 500 DOLLAR PER ANNUM. MAKE IT 750 DOLLARS TO BE GENEROUS AKA 2 DOLLARS PER DAY. THATS IT. PLAY 24, 10 CENT TOURNAMENTS AND SEE IF YOU CAN WIN 10 PER DAY( AKA IN THE MONEY) TAKE IT FROM THERE. ANY JUMP WILL SET YOU BACK INSTANTLY!!! AND YOU WILL BE SLOWED DOWN BY 5 TIMES.
      ----------------------------
POKER IS NOT THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN. THERE ARE OTHER FIELDS WHERE YOU CAN CRACK 6 FIG SALARIES FOR SAME INVESTMENT: DOCTORS, LAWYERS, STEM FIELD WHERE EVERYTHING IS FREE IN USA.
      ---------------------------
SPORTS FREE IN USA, IF YOU CAN THROW THE BASE BALL AT 85 MPH YOU ARE INN AND THEY WILL DO THE REST 5 MILES PER HOUR.
      ---------------------------
IN THE WHOLE WORLD USA IS THE ONLY PLACE ( UK IS SLEEPING TO MY CHAGRIN) WHERE YOU CAN GET AN OFFER YOU CANT REFUSE.
      NOT IN OTHER PLACES!!!
      -------------------------
      SO ONUS IS ON YOU.
MAD MONEY JIM CRAMER SAID I LOST 300 MIL OUT OF 400 MIL AND WALKED AWAY WITH 100 MIL BEFORE BUBBLE BURST AND THAT 100 MIL TOOK ME HERE.
SOME GOT HOSED IN 2008 CRISIS AND NOW YOU SEE STOCK MARKET CANT BUY A DIP DESPITE WARS, CLIMATE CHANGE AND WHAT NOT.
AND NATION BURIED IN DEBT( 33 TRIL N COUNTING) WHEN FINANCIAL CRISIS HIT USA DEBT WAS MERE 11 TRIL.
      ------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS STOCK MARKET RUN HAS DEFIED ALL ODDS AND NOBODY KNOWS HOW WORLD CAN HAVE DEBT AND STILL BE MERRY!!
      ---------------------------------
POKER ALWAYS HAS BEEN HIGH STAKES. THAT LONGEST POKER RUN IN THAT THEATER IN PHEONIX BIRD CAGE( A SMALL DINGY THEATERE) HAD 1000 DOLLAR BUY INN IN THOSE DAYS ( MORE THAN 100 YEARS AGO).
      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
THERE ARE OTHER GAMBLING AREAS EVEN IN CARDS: I NEED TO CHECK BACARAT OR CHINESE HOW MUCH THEY BET.
      ---------------------
AND HORSE BETTING WHERE HONG KONG TURF CLUB HAVE NEARLY 20 BIL REVENUE. HK IS SMALLER THAN NYK OK?
      --------------------------------------
A CLUB MAKES MORE THAN LAS VEGAS. WELL HK IS MUCH BIGGER THAN VGAS.
      ---------------------------------------------------
AND MACAU GAMBLING REVENUE IS TOUCHING 50 BIL BY 2026( 38 NOW) COMPARED TO 20 BIL LAS VEGAS.
MACAU HAS ONLY 50K CAPACITY WITH MERE 200 HOTELS COMPARED TO LAS VEGAS 130K WITH NEARLY 400 HOTELS.
      ----------------------------------------
SO THE CHINESE ARE GOING BERSERK AND THEY ARE JUST GETTING STARTED.
THE JAPANESE GOT OLD AND THEY DO NOT HAVE TIME. GERMANS LOVE GAMBLING TOO BUT NOT AT CHINESE LEVEL.

@@joeseddit errr, no. I think, based on my understanding of GTO poker, @king_has_no_clothskul8635 has it incorrect. The ranges are set by GTO--Each position has a range of hands that any player should fold/call/raise/reraise with to maximize EV. Therefore, depending on your opponent's position and their action you can assign a range of hands to them and play accordingly. A player's tendencies can cause you to shift them a bit, sure. But the base ranges themselves are set off the results of millions of simulations to find the optimal action for each hand at each position.

@jonathan: I’m confused at about 13:05 you are giving “Example 4”
    K82 rainbow UTG vs BTN.
I thought this would be similar to K75 rainbow from LJ vs BTN-and on K75, I believe we should be RANGE BETTING and LARGE-and you said we should bet frequently and small.
Am I missing something? Is K75 very substantially different from K82 r? Or is the issue that UTG opener is very different from LJ?
Or are you talking in this video about 30 BB stack depth at tournaments? Whereas I mostly study cash and tend to focus on 200BB depth? I suspect this might be aimed at 30BB depth because later you say this depends on your having enough kings in your range including K7s-which I am definitely not opening from UTG at 200 BB depth!

"you can't win if you check" is an untrue statement. You win by avoiding a situation where you trap yourself against someone who hit their range on the 8-9-6 board. It is easy for 2 bb to have 2 pair or beter and to check to you and allow you to c-bet bluff your missed range. Checking is a win, in that scenario.
