  • We think we are in for a slow, slow run from Liverpool to Douglas, but instead we have our fastest sail of the year so far. We also get to find out about the founding of the RNLI when our mascot launches the lifeboat...

    Thanks for the link, great video. You make it seem so easy. The first lifeboat station was at Formby, south east of there. Forgive me for asking but your accent sounds a bit North Liverpoolish..? Ace film, cheers Sail.

    It appears that now is the time to obtain a Salty Lass Drone, with a seat for a penguin to soar and to take videos of your future adventures!
    Thank you for a fun episode! 🐧🐧🐧⛵⚓⛵

      That would be cool. We DO have a drone but Prudence does not have a seat on top of it (To be fair, the propellers would chop her up!) Glad you enjoyed it and next week's episode starts with some drone footage! You heard it here first!!! 😉

    Yet another great video, however I think Formby was the birthplace of the first Lifeboat, I could be wrong! Lifeboat Road still leads us down to the shore .......

      Formby may have been the first lifeboat but the idea of having a national service of lifeboats is what Hillary is credited with. Glad you enjoyed the video

      It was fantastic. We were grinning like idiots the whole time 😄 As for the RNLI we have always supported them, even before we started sailing. On Bev's side, quite a few of her mother's family worked at sea as sailors or tug boat men, so the lifeboats have always been important to her

    I actually bare boat chartered a Bavaria 38C last week and I was very impressed by its sailing performance.
    Looks like you guys had a nice sail there.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  2 года назад +1

      Obviously we are biased, but Salty Lass handles like a big dinghy and loves being close-hauled. I hope you enjoyed your charter and if your 38C handles anything like our 2003 model than I am sure you had a great time. The trip over from Liverpool to Douglas was great except for the horrible lumpy beam-on seas at 0200h in total darkness...

    • @dutchglobetrotter4513
      @dutchglobetrotter4513 2 года назад +1

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass I had an awesome time and me being the only one in our group that could sail, was trimming the heck out of the sails. Close hauled we got 8,5 knots of boat speed in 16-17 knots true wind. For some reason the wind all week was coming from where we wanted to go. We also got a little beam reach and some down wind sailing the last day, however the 38C loves being close hauled. I never considered a Bavaria as a boat I would like, this charter changed my mind.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  2 года назад +1

      @@dutchglobetrotter4513 - That sounds really great and with the wind coming from where you want to go, a boat that likes close-hauling is definitely an advantage 😄

      It was great to have the invite in to such a prestigious station. Prior to that visit we never knew it was the Founder's Station. He also built the Tower of Refuge in Douglas Bay. I presume back then it was a lot more exposed than it is today with the modern harbour all around

    Hi Lasses, gotta say great sailing 7.5 knts love it. Gaynor ur new haircut really suits u, u look very dapper. Salty Lass looked really cute on that floating wharf. Glad ur both well. Had an update on my hip, unfortunately I've got severe arthritis in both hips, oh well they've got 4x4 wheelchairs these days. Love yas😁🌟💖🌈🇦🇺

      Our friend Karen is a hairdresser and she attacked our hair with harsh words and a pair of scissors before we left Liverpool. The 7½ kts was great - it was like flying again 😄 I am really sorry to hear about your hips and I hope that you can get something sorted. The doctors usually have a few tricks up their sleeves, so best of luck with it 👍

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass It's worse when there is a yacht tied alongside you. It's the same at Port St Mary's outer pier wall in a NW wind. I hope you find some calm anchorage soon.

    Yep we had similar conditions. Lowest we got was 0.5kns but at least we were sailing. Really enjoyed it for a change because not trying to make passage anywhere in particular. Just fluting around Dublin bay. Highest speed was 7kns on shake out sail.

    If there's space on the pontoon I'd always go for it now.....it's so tight in Douglas marina, you get balloon-heads stumbling out the bars late, and last time I was there the lock broke trying to exit and it caused mega stress bobbing around in that pool area by the lock but also, and crucially, outside you can leave for the full favourable tide.......the staff in Douglas are superb though, and yes you can hook up power.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  2 года назад +1

      We cover the marina next week and we found out some surprising stuff about the options available. The downside to the waiting pontoon is you get thumped in a northerly wind and in a strong NE-ly they sometimes move the pontoon ashore as it has been destroyed in NE-ly winds before. We do agree with you about the staff though - they were great 👍

    • @Jj-ff9vq
      @Jj-ff9vq 2 года назад +1

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass True - there are pros and cons, I wouldn't fancy going against the wall personally - if there's a NE then Port St Mary might be an option, depends how long the stay is.
