Then select a stage by highlighting it and holding [Y] while pressing +. Once in game, [B] switches to and from item mode, and while there, [Y] cycles and [A] duplicates. On 50 rings, jumping with [Y] or [A] activates golden sonic. Also, the main face buttons have effects while the screen is paused, so play with that too.
