As someone who is a master textile restorer through the IICRC I can honestly say you are the most thorough and correct dye master I've ever seen. Proper applications of heat, acids and correct steps. Well done!
This is the 1st time I've ever commented on a RUclips video, I really feel compelled to thank you. I just finished watching all of your tutorials and found helpful info in each one that I hadn't seen or read elsewhere. (Even the part on cleaning, which I almost skipped, and am so happy I didn't!) Thank you for taking the time to make these and share your gorgeous yarn along the way, very inspirational.
I just found your channel and I can’t express how much I enjoyed watching you create your stunning speckled yarns! 😍You are hands down the best RUclips instructor I’ve ever watched. You explain everything so clearly and in such a soothing voice while we watch the yarns become absolutely dreamy-gorgeous!!! I can’t wait to watch your entire channel. Thank you so much for sharing your art with us❤
Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. I'm still exploring and learning new things myself and I enjoy sharing what I've learned along the way. Thank you for supporting my channel.
What a fabulous video! You make the most beautiful yarn, and it is a pleasure to watch you create it. :) And, you are not only an amazing fiber artist, you are SO GOOD at relaying what you are doing in such an articulate manner! This was the first video of yours that I have watched, but I will definitely be going back through all the previous ones. Thank you. :)
Thanks so much for this. I just had a disastrous attempt at speckling and I was feeling pretty defeated. Excited to try your method next time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your speckled mohair looks like a galaxy. It's just gorgeous.
Thank you so much for these videos!!! I’ve been dyeing cellulose fibers for my weaving company for about ten years and now find myself diving head first into dyeing silk. I’ve been devouring your videos trying to gleen all of the information I can. I’ve also been reading everything on the Dharma site relating to silk dyeing. Do you think I can dye speckles on silk? I will probably experiment with it today or tomorrow anyway. I’m excited to start a new chapter in my fiber arts journey. Thank you so much for all of your guidance. ❤
(Read all this in a very cheerful and excited person tone!) OMG! I found your channel last week and I have watched about 2 videos each day since. Thank you so much for taking us through your process and sharing your secrets. I may try dyeing soon and these videos are really getting me pumped to try it.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I started dyeing yarn two years ago and your videos were invaluable. It is so kind to share this information for free. I love your work.
This is exactly what i was looking for! I can't wait to try tomorrow! Thank you for your brilliant tutorial- you are a natural (and super nice) teacher!! 😊
I am waiting for my first yarn to arrive for my first attempt at dyeing! Thanks for sharing how to do this...and I love your voice. It's so calming and soothing.
I've watched all of the dyeing tutorial videos and I've learned a lot. I can't say I'm a fan of a lot of the colorways you do. I stay away from the red, yellows and oranges and love the purples, blues and greens. However in a earlier video you mention a yellow that wasn't sellable and I just fell in love with it. I like contrast and I liked how the yellow had a contrast with the yellow dye that had jelled to make it a more deep orange/yellow. I've subscribed and I'm going to go watch some more of your videos while I crochet. Keep on dyeing! Oh! And something else I noticed. I can not like a dyed yarn much while it's still wet and being washed but once it's dry and all twisted up into a hank, I can love it! The rose hank you did in a earlier video was that way. I loved how the yarn threads where two different tones.
I just found this video..had to like and subscribe because this yarn is STUNNING!!! I just picked up knitting again and finally took the time to learn how to graduate from squareish objects to sweaters. I need this yarn in my life..someday..maybe during a week with not much cooking I’ll try this as I love to try all aspects of creating. In the meantime I can always buy some of your beautiful skeins ❤ Just a question about the heating process. Could I just bake it at 200 degrees instead of direct heat? I have a steaming option on my oven used for baking bread although I imagine the water from the pan already does the steaming. Just curious 🧐
Acid dyes are relatively safe to use but they are still a chemical product so I don't recommend using them an appliance that you will be cooking food in. If you must then I suggest covering the dye pan with foil to keep the dyes contained. Remember as well that any pans/pots and utensils used for dyeing should not be used for food.
I'm so thankful to have found your videos ! Thank you so much for all the effort you put into them, how in depth you went with all your explanation ! I'm still unsure how to manage the heat portion of the dyeing process from my kitchen but hopefully I will manage, I'm just looking to dye yarn for myself so it's ok ! And I do have to say, your yarns are absolutely beautiful !
I just found your channel and I am obsessed! Your video style is very calming and relaxing. I’m not too familiar with yarn dyeing, but your videos definitely make me want to dye my own yarn! Thanks for the tutorial!
I can’t thank you enough for this series of how to dyeing- it was SO informative and I learned SO much and found so much informations I didn’t know and nobody have shared before - so a BIG thank you from me to you for doing the effort to make these videos. I’m for sure a new subscriber to your channel❤️❤️ big hug from Denmark 🇩🇰 🥰
Thankyou for this. I can’t afford the cost of beautiful yarn from overseas, I’m in New Zealand. So this was some great tips. I’ve done a little dyeing but didn’t know to use hot water. Thankyou
Thank you, I'm glad you like the colours. As far as making videos I'm still trying to find my style so it's fun to try different things. Thanks for your feedback on the format.
Hello from South Africa I just found your podcast and I am so excited and impressed as I have. just started dyeing my own yarn for personal use and am going to use your method because I just love your colours - you are a joy to watch !!!
I'm so glad you mentioned the mask- at design school we were only allowed to use dye powder inside a vaccum room. You do not want to breathe that stuff in.
I'm so glad I came across your video as this is my first time watching one about yarn dying! I went to your website and LOVE the way you display your yarn. I've been wishing other yarn shops would display their yarn the way you do: twisted into a skein, unraveled, and knitted. It is so helpful as a consumer! I subscribed and will be following your work for sure! Thank you for all you do
Thank you so much for subscribing. I'm glad you appreciate the way my website is set up. Gradually I'm adding knit and crochet samples of all my colours because I also think it is helpful to see how the colours work up.
Wow ! You create wonderful effects with speckles. It was fascinating to see you work - you have a large operation there. Your eye for colour is spot on and the colour mixtures are breathtaking.
Thanks so much for the tutorial. I've done some speckling with strong dye solution applied with a fan brush, because I could not get just small amounts on the yarn using a spoon or pinching with my fingers, but I think I will try your method using the metal strainer.
I hope you get the results you like. Depending on the look I'm going for I sometimes just use my fingers to get a chunkier looking speckle but the strainer has been a convenient tool.
I'm going to try this technique with my macrame rope. I have the same type of dye so I can't wait to see the results 😁. I love the speckled look and have tried many ways to achieve it but this by far looks the easiest 🤗 thank you for the step by step. Your instructions will be easy to follow ❤
If your using the same dye as me remember it is only for protein based fibres such as wool, not plant based ones like cotton. I believe most macrame rope is cotton, jute, etc so just checking.
That's good. I would suggest watching tutorials on dyeing plant fibre because I don't think the method will be entirely the same. I don't think you need heat but be prepared to do a lot and I mean a lot of rinsing and washing because the dye for plant fibres will not exhaust. Of course you will not be using acid but a different mordant, but I'm sure you know all this. I would love to know how it turns out.
This is beautiful!! My sister asked me for some black and blue speckled yarn on DK. I've never done DK before. I was unhappy with the results. I wish I had seen this video on Friday instead of today!! Your colors are awesome.
Gorgeous yarn!!! I've seen your website in the past & thought your colors are absolutely beautiful... temptation is there!! Speckled splotchy yarns are my favorite. (I'm on a buying ban until I use up some stash 😭)... I've watched small batch dyers & it's amazing to see how a professional does it!!! So different! I'm amazed by the consistency of color. I dabble, but it's mostly to overdye colors I didn't care for..... Not to mention the 22 skeins of onion skin dyed yarn for blanket..it IS a pretty burnt orange.
I have just finished watching your 9 tutorial videos and they have been so informative and wonderful to watch. You are so creative and easy to understand. You have an exceptional ability demonstrate your creativity and passion. I am keen to jump in and give it a go. Hopefully I'll have some fun experimenting along the way. Thank you so much for sharing and your yarn colours look amazing.
Best video I have seen so far and I've watched many. I'm so glad I found you. Your explanations are to the point and are easy to understand. I will be dyeing for the first time this week and feel more confident after watching your videos. Thank you so much.
You are lovely, your yarn is lovely, and I love learning from your videos. I can't wait for my order to come in so I can try to dye myself. P.S. - any thoughts on crock pot dyeing?
Thanks so much for the kind comments. I hope you have fun with your dye journey. I know you can dye with a crock pot but I've never done it. You probably know this already but if you use the pot for dyeing you can no longer use it for food.
So enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love the set-up you have. The way you heat your yarn in your warming oven is interesting. I was thinking using that method in a regular oven, two pans should fit nicely. Not commercial, just home use. Again, thank you.
This is a great educational video. Your choice of superwash versus non superwash is a question I have. Why and what are the results between speckling each?
In general non sw yarns don't speckle very well. The dye just soaks into the yarn and forms blobs of colour instead of distinct speckles. I'm not saying it doesn't look attractive but it's not the look I'm going for when speckling. Sw yarns have a coating on them that helps the dye sit on the surface so you can get that beautiful, sharp speckled effect. Personally I choose to just dye solid colours on untreated or non sw yarns and for all the fancy colour techniques I use sw.
As someone who is a master textile restorer through the IICRC I can honestly say you are the most thorough and correct dye master I've ever seen. Proper applications of heat, acids and correct steps. Well done!
High praise! Thank you for the wonderful compliment. It sounds like you have a very interesting job.

No you definitely don't.

so gorgeous! thanks so much for sharing the process with us, also your yarn labels are so nice
Thank you so much for watching. I think my labels are cute too. It was my husbands idea so thanks to him.
This is beautiful ! I wa thinking Aurora Boreallis at first..but I definitely need to try this some day! Thank you!
Thank you so much ❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊
Fabulous video. Very educational, you are a great teacher.
Thank you so much.
absolutely love the tip about using the sieve! I was trying to find a handy way to speckle for a completely different project, and this is PERFECT!
I'm glad this was helpful. I really like the results I get using it.
You are a wonderful teacher! Thanks so much for this video, a big hello from Australia🌸🦋
Thank you and you are so welcome! Hello back from Canada.
Master in work!! Congratulation and thank you very much❤🧡💛💚💙
Thank you too!
Your work and how you explain it it’s amazing thank you so much ❤
Thanks so much for the tutorial.
Looks to be the same brand but mine is for cotton
That's good. I would suggest watching tutorials on dyeing plant fibre because I don't think the method will be entirely the same. I don't think you need heat but be prepared to do a lot and I mean a lot of rinsing and washing because the dye for plant fibres will not exhaust. Of course you will not be using acid but a different mordant, but I'm sure you know all this. I would love to know how it turns out.
very nice! 😊😊
Thank you.
Beautiful yarns!
Thank you.
I will definitely try these speckling methods. Thank you for sharing!
Your welcome and have fun speckling!
Thank you! Trying dyeing very soon
Thank you for the recap 👍 that was very helpful 😭
Glad it was helpful.
Very informative video for this curious person. Not sure I'd ever do this myself but I really enjoyed watching you do it!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is beautiful!! My sister asked me for some black and blue speckled yarn on DK. I've never done DK before. I was unhappy with the results. I wish I had seen this video on Friday instead of today!! Your colors are awesome.
Thank you for watching. Dyeing yarn involves a lot of trial and error. I'm sure you will get results you're happy with soon.

My yarn will be waiting when your ban is lifted😉
I have just finished watching your 9 tutorial videos and they have been so informative and wonderful to watch. You are so creative and easy to understand.
