Dye used:
Pro chem Hot pink, turquoise, brilliant violet
Dharma flourescent orange, flourescent lemon, spearmint breeze, bright aqua, xtreme blue, midnight
Dye Stock Recipe:
1 Tablespoon dye
1 Tablespoon citric acid
2.5 cups near boiling water
** dyestock must be used within 1-2 days. Stock without citric acid can last up to 6 months (but it does start to separate and turn grainy or get a scum on the top depending on the composition of your tap water).
Superfine merino, superwash and non superwash

I wish there was a budget for a professional videographer, professional editor, a real lighting rig, and rented studio space, but alas. It's just me and my cell phone. If I spent $2500 producing this video, I'd have to put a paywall in front of it, and people who can't afford to buy in would be left out. I appreciate each and every one of you that donates, because you're helping to pay the way for someone who can't otherwise join in on the fun.
When I started out in 2008, I was desperately poor and totally enthralled. I had to start with mill ends, kool aid & a microwave. It took me 5 full years of stumbling around in the dark before I had a handle on what I was doing. I'm trying to make the indie dyer market a friendlier, more open space for the next generation. It was highly proprietary, cliquey, and exclusive when I started. And so disheartening and lonely. Thanks for helping me make it a more inviting space.

I agree that it looks amazing in the skein, and its more likely to pool as an argyle, it definitely limits the amount of different colors you can pack into a skein.
i know this video is a couple years old but i just have to SHOUT THANK YOU for understanding the connection between technique for dying versus knitting products. as a plus size designer/crocheter- so many pretty skeins disappoint when making a 25-30 inch width. i loved all your information and attention to detail and your stance on clown/unicorn/vomit/poop/etc. some dyers are bonkers throwing everything in a pot and calling it 'art'. thanks again.

Love how you know your color wheel. A lot of folks that I watch just throw the color on, not knowing what the 2 colors will bring up on the opposite end of the color wheel. I am a crocheter and just started knitting. I would never have thought that the pretty skeins/hanks, would turn up so differently in a project when hooked or knitted up. That is super good to know. Thank you.
I learned the hard way, but it built up a lot of intuitive knowledge. Im hoping to finish the D.O.S. video & triad dyeing before baby comes (3ish weeks) but that may be pushing it
@@NicoleFrostYarn totally understand. Just try not to push it too much. Baby might come out with colored hair. Lol I can't wait to see more of those color lots, I'm tempted to try some out myself and see what colors I produce.😉

I like to use my tribe’s technique of dyeing that’s basically painting the dye on. Took a bit to develop a method to not get too much bleed over but my Gram told me a trick they used to use.

Nicole, I deeply appreciate your tutorials. Although there are other dyers who post tutorials, some of them quite voluminous, what I love about yours is your artistic skill. You show professional-level technique and, equally important, sophisticated color blending and mixing. Other dyers sometimes show great technique but with colorways that are simply -- pardon the pun -- tone-deaf. This is gorgeous. Thanks a squillion!

Very informative. Learning the differences of color mixing in materials ranging from har dying/ paints /earthen clay glazes / polymer clays/ paints and newer technology and how yarn dying is very different from other color mixing and blending exercise techniques and results

Thanks, this was great, I still don't understand how the color repeats work both in creating and using them but I certainly gained a greater appreciation for your craft. I am still just using kool aid and food coloring but thinking seriously about getting into the wider world of actual dyes sometime this year.

@@NicoleFrostYarn thanks, I will email you. I think my problem is trying to take in too many ways to arrange the yarn and apply the dye all in too short a time frame. Then the knitting repeat part feels like math formulas when I try to figure it out. My brain just isn't getting it, lol.

Fantastic demo! I'm returning to dyeing after a 5 year hiatus. Trying out the low vs high-water method on two skeins of similar base, with two shades of orange, along with dyeing with citric acid for the first time. Easy to understand, love your swatch samples, too.

I hear ya on making "indie" dyeing a more welcoming space. The more the merrier. It can be like knitting shops still.. you walk in, and everyone like stops in their tracks to look. Or calls you out on knitting funny. I like your approach, for I find some dyers a little toffee nosed. I ask way too many questions! :-) But, I follow directions some, and wing it some. Again, I appreciate all you do.

I've never seen how yarn is dyed at home before. I've only seen how they dye yarn in Peru with natural organic matter's! This is a great video compared to the others I've watched before yours!

interesting to see them knitted up. I'm a complete novice so these details are important IMO.
Your videos are so instructional you are a really good teacher and (based on many of your videos) you have a real talent with color! I’ll vouch for what you said about the palindrome skeins. I got a very $$$ skein of “fusion” yarn: same dyes on 8 different yarn bases for texture interest. I realized later that the hanks all had basically 5 stripes of colors, evenly divided around the circles, with harsh borders. It was for a shawl:wtf? Ugly pooling. I solved it by winding 2 mini balls for each of the 8 yarns, and alternating constantly to keep the colors flowing nicely and not like a messed up circadian rhythm chart, zig zagging to oblivion. What a huge pain. And you’re right: I won’t buy from that person again.

I love this! I love the swatches and really getting to see what these skeins turn into. You threw me off for a minute saying complimentary colors when you meant analogous. But you fixed it later. I think this is great though!

GIRL!! I'm finally using up the last of the ridiculously gorgeous superwash single "galaxy" yarn I scooped-up from you a couple of years ago and, of course, need more! Haha! So I'm finally taking the plunge and am going to try dyeing some myself (practicing on the fisherman's yarn first, of course)! Can't wait to try this in fluorescent rainbow colors + black spray bottle speckling! Will tag you in my insta pics (scrumptiousNsassy) when it's all said and done! This randomly showed up in my feeds, which is odd since I was messing about with blueberries, fake lemon juice & wool the other day. Never used dyes before, kinda interested now.
The fiber content in lemon should must likely lend a sticky, clotted feel to the fiber, better to get white vinegar or order citric acid. Blueberries would yield only a minor stain, not lightfast or washfast.
If you want to try dyeing but are more interested in natural dyes vs synthetic, check out www.dharmatrading.com and go to their dye section.
Word of warning- natural dyes are significantly more expensive than synthetic and have a limited color range.
@@NicoleFrostYarn Oh my plans were to use white vinegar but it seems my boyfriend had used it up a year ago and never threw out the bottle... The yarn did only stain and its consistency is oddly wavy now...the cotton shirt that I was wearing did stain by accident a very lovely color.

Thank you so much for your tutorials. I’m going to give this a try, but I have a few questions. You may have already replied but I can’t see it yet. Are there recipes for these colours or is this asking too much lol. (I meant is it a secret). 2. I keep watching people dying yarns but no one has answered this on. Where do people get the yarn base names? 3. How do you keep records for colour repeats? 4. Last but not least I’ll buy you a coffee, but where do I do this. Your videos are worth more than 1 cup of coffee but that’s about all I can afford right now. Having said this, I just turned 69 years young this year and yes i would love to give real acid dyes a proper go. No no not turning pro lol. Thanks fo all the answers. Congrats on your baby. 1). Read the description below the video, I have the dye recipe listed. It's my own personal formula that yields super saturated colors with no bleed.
2). No fucking idea why dyers name their bases. Most dyers in the U.S. buy from wool2dye4 or Ashland Bay. The manufacturers of this yarn have named them (like, "sheila's sparkle" after the owner Sheila Trunzo, or Wilamette, which is a place in the state Ashland Bay is). But why, specifically, do dyers take already named bases and christen them something new? Couldn't tell you, I don't do it because it's always struck me as a cheap marketing gimmick. I think I'm not that romantic or whimsical of a dyer, I dislike even having to give my colorways names.
3). I don't keep records of my colorways. I don't do regular shop updates nor do I have colorways I repeatedly offer for sale, I'm more focused on teaching. Besides, after 11 years, I can look at a skein and know exactly what colors were used in what application style.
